The one thing that my other half, Rich, said to me when I started working for Rock My Style three years ago was ‘don’t change’. Well don’t tell Rich, but I reckon I have changed. Not necessarily for the worse, and not necessarily because of the job, but I am definitely a slightly different person.
Three years ago, I didn’t know a thing about flowers. I didn’t know a rose from a ranunculus. And I wasn’t too fussed about them either. I was someone who would rather be given a box of Maltesers than a bunch of flowers. But now I’ve styled whole shoots for Rock My Wedding with wild and wonderful blooms, and what’s more, I’m asking Adam if I can please keep some of the flowers at the end of the shoot.
Three years ago, I didn’t know what an avatar was, nor a Pinterest handle, and I wasn’t on Instagram. (Editor Lauren must have wondered what on EARTH Charlotte was doing employing this social-media-unsavvy individual!). Three years on and I’m fully versed in all things Facebook, Insta and Pinterest, and have been responsible for creating content and posting to all of our social media channels.
Three years ago, if you’d have told me that there was going to be a backlash against some of that same technology I would never have believed you. But I’m increasingly hearing snippets which suggest that this will be the case. On The High Low a couple of weeks ago, Dolly Alderton talked about how she reckons that the tables are on the turn, and that our grandchildren’s generation will be one that seeks invisibility. In his recent How To Fail interview with Elizabeth Day, Mo Gawdat opined “we are at a juncture of our history where more technology might not actually be what we need”. And I can’t not mention Charlotte’s post about the future of online media, or the Ted Talk that she forwarded to Team Rock My recently in which Carole Cadwalladr asks for the likes of Mark Zuckerberg and Larry Page to be held to account for their role in Brexit, and in ‘breaking’ democracy. I don’t know what the future holds for technology, but it feels like a vulnerable one.
Three years ago, my dream was to get a job working in interiors. Working for a lifestyle blog has enabled me to do this to a certain extent: I’ve shown you around my home, and my little boy’s room has been featured in my all-time favourite interiors magazine because of this (Ideal Home. Ideal HOME! I’m still pinching myself), and I’ve started to do bits of interior design work for friends and family. I’ve been lucky enough to have had the chance to style products and create posts for brands such as Hobbycraft, Howdens, DFS and Marks and Spencer. These, and the Sydney one, have been my favourite posts by far.
Three years ago, I was a mum to my little girl, Lyra; but my little boy, Jenson, wasn’t even a twinkle in my eye.
I’m off to spend a bit of quality time with my littles, and concentrate on making my interior design dream a reality.
Thank you so much if you’ve read my posts here or on Instagram, especially if you’ve taken the time to leave a comment. The Rock My community is a bloody brilliant one and I’m going to miss it loads.
Hi Lisa,
Really sad to hear that you’re leaving the team as I’ve always loved your posts (especially as I love your home styling and the fact that we’re hair and skin twins so all your products work for me 😆). Completely understand your reasons and comments on the future of technology; I’m increasingly trying to simplify my life and sometimes it just seems to get in the way. More time with family is definitely the priority. All the best with the interior design venture!xx
Hey hair and skin twin! Thank you for your lovely comment. Yes to a simpler life 🙌🏼 Xx
Thank you for all the fantastic posts Lisa – I have loved reading your interiors, family and travel writing on rock my style and rock my family. Good luck for your next challenge, you will be missed.
It’s been a lot of fun! Thanks Sarah C x
Wishing you all the best Lisa, have always enjoyed reading your posts and hearing about your lovely family.
I am not surprised that you are leaving Rock My, your voice has been absent for a long time, as have the voices of many: Charlotte, Becky and Lauren (who I know is enjoying her time with her precious boy) to name a few and the content hasn’t been of the standard it used to be.
I do believe that the future of blogs is a vulnerable one as you say, but there is a present demand for online content and it’s a shame that Rock My Style hasn’t been delivering that (for me at least) recently. I miss the regular posts. I miss the beauty posts. I miss Charlotte’s voice coming through the blog. I miss Rock My Family. I’m sure there are reasons behind these changes, but I won’t be surprised if things just move back to Rock My Wedding.
Anyway, sorry for my long post but I want to say good luck again for whatever your next challenge is.
xx
Hi Marianne! We’ve got a poll going up on Instagram stories later today to determine what kind of posts our readers would like more of. It would be lovely to get your feedback over there with some specifics of what else you would like to see 😊
Thanks Naomi, I’ll check it out! x
Not to sound old-fashioned, but I also love/loved all the ‘Rock Mys…’ and would like to comment on content I would like to see, etc but can’t type on the Insta stories on my phone… any other way(s) of sharing?
Sure Danni! You can send me an email if you like? naomi@rockmystyle.co.uk. I’m always open to feedback 👍🏼
Thanks for your well wishes Marianne. I miss all those things too! So definitely have a look at the poll Naomi mentions. X
Lisa!!!! I’m still sad. Thank you for being such a wonderful colleague. Can’t wait to see what you get up to next. xo
It’s been lovely working with you Naomi xx
No-one will fill our Lisa shaped hole. I’ve loved your posts and I’ve loved working with you. I’m so excited to see your new career unfold. Go spend some time with those gorgeous babies of yours. Lots of love xxx
Becky, bless you! Would love to keep in touch. Xx
Ahh, Lisa what a lovely lady you are, I’m going to miss you lots. I wish you all the love, happiness and success in your new venture, I know you are going to smash it and look forward to following your journey! Big hugs and warmest wishes always xxx
Lorna you’re the loveliest and it’s been ace working with you. Please do keep in touch! X
Lisa! It’s been so wonderful to work with you for the last year. Let’s keep in touch and make sure we continue sharing podcast and book recommendations! Lots of love x
Yes please Alice! I’m reading three books at the moment – not sure how that happened. Elizabeth Day’s autobiography, A Sunday by the Pool in Kigali and What Red Was. All so different but all really good. X
Lisa it’s not goodbye from me – I’ll see you on Friday for NCT drinks 🙂
But I did want to say thanks so much for everything, you will be massively missed but I know you will go on to do AMAZING interior related projects. Can’ wait to see what you create next x
Thanks for giving this social-media-unsavvy-individual a shot Charlotte 😘 Yey to Friday 💃 x
Lisa- thoroughly enjoyed your posts and refreshingly down to earth outlook and lifestyle. Best of luck with the new ventures.
Is it possible to put the poll on the blog rather than insta? As a non insta user (already practicing the backlash against putting your life online) I’d love a chance to share my ideas for future posts.
Thank you Suzy T! 😘
Hi Suzy! You’re very welcome to send me an email with what you’d like to see on the blog. naomi@rockmystyle.co.uk. Would be lovely to hear any thoughts you have. xo
Lisa, I’m late to this post so I’m not sure you’ll see it… but over the years I’ve loved seeing what you’ve done with Rock My, and following your own story over on the gram. From the perfectly curated black watering can, to you inspiring me to paint rainbow raindrops on Emmy’s bedroom walls, to our shared love of Pullman and of course your beautiful children.
I’d be lying if I said I read RMS anywhere near as much as I did back in the day. Two jobs and a four year old have seen to that, but I just wanted to chip in with some love and well wishes for the future.
Karen xx
Karen this warmed the cockles of my heart! All the love to you and your little girl. Xx
Awww Lisa – I am going to miss your voice! Enjoy your time with the family – and look forward to seeing you pop up as interior inspiration at some point – because I know you will! 🙂 x
Aw Janey, what a lovely thing to say 💕 Thank you. Xx
Dear Lisa,
I will miss you and your writing and style on here. I totally understand your reasons and wish you all the best! I’ll just keep looking out for your posts on IG.
Thanks Anja. I’m really going to miss the interaction on the blog with you lovely readers. (Did I mention the Rock My community is the best?)! Take care x
Good luck Lisa, the interior design world will have a lot to gain if that’s your next adventure! You’ll definitely be missed on RockMyStyle xxx
Ahhh sorry to hear you are leaving Lisa but best of luck for the future! Enjoy the time with your family too xx
I’ve only just seen this…will miss your voice, your words always resonated the most with my own family.
Best of luck with new adventures, I love hearing of people simplifying their lives…i’ve learnt many things in the last year but mostly that the little things are so often underrated! Xx
Somehow I missed this post but just wanted to say I always loved your posts Lisa, funny, interesting and with some beaut pics. Think there were a couple written by your sister in law which were fab too. Best of luck for the future!
