Where I come from there’s a saying: “You don’t get owt for nowt.” For those of you not from the north of England it means that you don’t get something for nothing. Well, at least when it comes to fitness classes and running clubs these days, actually, you do.
Inspired by Charlotte’s post on frivolous spending and Lauren’s post on half year resolutions and, with a plan to turn my spare bedroom into an office like Charlotte, I’ve decided that for the month of July I’m going to cut back on all unnecessary spending. I still have to come up with a definitive list of what counts as necessary and what’s definitely not but, after a chat with my sister the other day about all the free fitness classes and clubs on offer, it’s clear that one expense I can cut is my yoga membership (currently costing me £95 a month).
Obviously I could simply replace going to yoga classes with self-practice in front of a DVD in my living room but, for me, going to a yoga class isn’t just about doing yoga. As someone who’s currently working mostly from home, the social contact is a big factor and, I don’t know about you, but I definitely work much harder when I’m in a group environment than when I’m working out alone.
I’m planning to keep up my usual exercise schedule of three to five workouts a week, mixing it up between in-store classes, outdoor classes and running and giving some, or all, of the following a try…
Lululemon
The yoga and running focussed fitness brand offers a free Saturday morning run club and Sunday morning yoga classes at their recently-opened Covent Garden store. Classes are offered on a first come, first served basis and are open to all levels.

Parkrun
I’ve mentioned it before but parkrun is so brilliant it’s worth another mention. Taking place up and down the country at 9am on Saturday mornings, parkrun is a free locally-organised 5k run that anyone can turn up and take part in (register online before your first one if you want to get a time) on condition that you volunteer a couple of times a year.

Sweatshop Running Community
Free all-levels running group at every store around the country. Timings and distances on offer vary from store to store. For example my local store offers Tuesday evening 5k and 10k runs, Thursday evening interval training and a Sunday morning 5k run. Register online to be eligible to receive incentives such as t-shirts as a reward for the more times you run.

Sweaty Betty
Every Sweaty Betty store around the country offers free clubs every week. Classes vary from store to store with everything from boxing and ballet, to Pilates and power yoga on offer. All you need to do is become a member and book your place.

This one is for central London peeps only, but the lovely ladies who run the blog Fashercise hold a running ‘meet up’ on Wednesday night’s. It’s an all ability 5k run around Regents park (meeting at The Volunteer pub between 6.30 – 7, running at 7) followed by a glass of prosecco! It’s brilliant fun and I have met some great people through going and it has actually got me enjoying running – my husband is astounded!
Hi Bryony, can anyone go along to this? x
That sounds brilliant Bryony. I can’t do this next Wednesday but will aim to be at the next one!
Nike Training Club sounds awesome, I’m signing up for some of their classes now – thanks Miranda! xx
Pleasure – I’ve signed up for two next week! x
I haven’t done one yet but if you visit http://www.goskyride.com there are loads of free, organised bike rides across the country that you can sign up for, different distances and terrains so there is something for everyone!
Ooh, I hadn’t even thought about organised cycling events – thanks Anna!
Hi – yes the Fashercise run is open to all! It really is a mix of abilities and a very inclusive, fun environment – I am not a fast runner and I love it (the prosecco at the end helps!)
I can’t go next week either as I’m at Glastonbury but will aim to be there the week after (if I have recovered!)
Have fun at Glastonbury Bryony and hopefully see you at a Fashercise run soon!
I had no idea you could do classes for free! I’ve just called Sweaty Betty in Nottingham and am all geared up to do a ballet bootcamp next Tuesday! They do yoga and pilates once a week each. For free!
All of the running ones sound great but I’ve just hung up my running trainers after battling with ridiculous calf tightness after even the shortest of runs for years! Instead I’ve joined a bootcamp for £20 a month and I can go as many times a week as I want. Which surprisingly I’ve decided to limit to 2.. But it’s very cheap and so much fun! I’m going to check out Nike now as well!
It’s brilliant isn’t Jennifer, especially when you consider that classes are anything upwards of £10 a go. Enjoy ballet bootcamp, sounds like a great class!
I love that you’re plugging parkrun – I am a huge fan and on Saturday I’ll be proudly running my 100th one! My favourite thing is the community emphasis – I’d very much recommend trying out your local ones 🙂
Congratulations on running your 100th parkrun Katie! I’ve run two locally, Hackney Marshes and Mile End. Absolutely plan to do more around London.
