I’m already more than a third of the way through my 100 days happy challenge (if you have no idea what I’m talking about you can read all about it here). Looking back over the past month there are definite themes emerging. Perhaps surprisingly, the things that have made me stop, smile and think, “This world’s pretty great really,” are mostly simple pleasures which cost nothing, or not very much at all. Here’s what’s been making me happy since I started the challenge…
Moving my body
Getting outdoors and moving my body whether I’m surfing, running, cycling, swimming or yoga-ing, can turn a bad mood around or make a good mood better. The feeling of standing up on my board and surfing all the way to the beach, running through the Olympic Park in the rain early one morning when no one else was there, and cycling along the canals and through the parks of East London on sunny mornings have all made me can’t-stop-smiling happy lately.
Drinking green juice
I developed a love for green juice on holiday in LA last year and I couldn’t be more happy that London has gone mad for the green stuff this spring, with new juice bars popping up all over the place. I love the health and happiness hit I get from chugging a bottle of some combination of nutrient-packed ingredients such as kale, spinach, romaine, celery, apple and ginger. The greenhouse juice combinations from Press – who had a pop up juice bar in Old Street last month, and are opening a shop in central London soon – are my favourites so far.
Eating. Full stop.
I think about what I’m going to eat for breakfast before I go to sleep. Soon after breakfast I’ve got lunch on my mind. And if I’m going out for dinner you can bet your life I’ll have read the menu online earlier that day. You get the picture. I like food. Some of my happiest meals recently include pizzas in the sun at Crate Brewery, pulled pork tacos from Breddo’s Tacos at Field Day, superfood scrambled eggs at pod, a tasty cheeseboard at Galvaniser’s Union and a burger and truffled fries last night at new Hackney Wick bar and eaterie Cygnet.
Getting organised
Whenever I’ve got a deadline (which is most of the time) my desk gets increasingly messy, taken over by teetering piles of papers, books, magazines, numerous glasses and mugs and various other paraphernalia that has no place on a desk at all. My to do list gets longer. Things get misplaced. And consequently my life starts to feel completely out of control. I’m determined to get on top of it all this summer. I’ve gotten into the habit of tidying my desk at the end of the day which makes me feel more in control. And I’ve bought some lovely folders and a pack of highlighter pens. Actual organisation? Starting tomorrow. Ahem.
Spotting street art
I’m not sure exactly why I love street art. Possibly because it brightens up otherwise grimy parts of a city. Maybe because it’s temporary and if you don’t take time to appreciate it the next time you walk past it might gone. Perhaps it’s because not everybody sees it as it’s often located in places that are a little off-the-beaten track. Whatever the reason, spotting a good looking piece of street art makes me happy and I can never resist taking a photograph and sharing it on Instagram.
When it comes down to it what makes you happy? Is it simple, low or no-cost pleasures like me? If you’re doing the 100 days happy challenge how are you getting on? Have you been surprised by what’s made you happy? As ever do share!

I’ve seen a few people doing this which kind of inspired a little project I undertook on my honeymoon recently where I instagrammed a picture a day for three weeks. And they generally fell in to two categories – food (obviously) and natural beauty and sights I just don’t see in my every day life. So I guess they’d be the things that make me happy.
Since the wedding (2 months ago today!!) I have also gained 8lbs through constant celebrating. So taking control of my diet again is also making me happy. I’m enjoying the food prep it takes to follow a sugar free lifestyle and coming up with inventive healthy meals. However, I’ve had an epiphany this week that I’m probably going to have to stop drinking prosecco like it’s water if I really want to see results and that’s something that’s making me less happy..!
Happy Thursday! Xx
Hi Jennifer! I’ve done a (worrying amount of) research into sugar and alcohol – I’m also trying to cut down on the sugar but love the bubbly stuff and the non bubbly stuff. Turns out wine is actually ok for the sugar content. A 200ml glass of dry white wine or red wine has approx 1/2 teaspoon of sugar in it, compared to SEVEN teaspoons in a banana! And also wine is fructose free, and fruit has a lot of fructose – which is the sugar that is the most addictive and causes fat storage. Red wine has the least amount of sugar, closely followed by dry white (must be white). Prosecco and champagne and other sparking things do retain more of the sugar (and some of it is fructose), but they’re still not that bad.
So basically, wine is better for you than banana’s….
Hi! Thanks for the tips. I had read that about wine (Sarah Wilson loves to mention in her books that wine is still allowed!) but my issue is the sheer volume of the stuff I drink sometimes. A friend of mine came round for dinner at the weekend and we drank 3 bottles of prosecco between us which is a crazy number of empty calories! So I’m trying to make the occasional swap to vodka. Not that I’m an actual alcoholic, contrary to what I’ve just written! I’m trying to now consider wine, especially pro (as my friends and I have helpfully abbreviated it) as something for a special occasion. Not something to be drunk by the gallon load on a Wednesday night when the rain has made us sack off bootcamp in favour of going to the pub..
Good luck on the sugar free journey. I’ve just discovered overnight oats and porridge whips which make an awesome breakfast!
Wine better for you than bananas? I love that!
Does this mean I should be having a glass of wine with my porridge instead of a banana on top of it?
Haha!
I think that would be best Charlotte. Health first!
I think I have just found one of things that are making me happy in June….Pinot Grigio for breakfast 🙂
Happy Thursday Jennifer! What a lovely idea to Instagram a picture a day on your honeymoon. Being somewhere new makes me happy too but with no trips planned at the moment I’m on a mission to go to new places and do new things in London this summer! x
These are very, very similiar to things that make me happy too. Food and general eating is my all time favourite for sure (Cygnet looks awesome, it’s on my list to check out now), closely followed by a run by myself (I am definitely not a social runner, I like the reflection time). I am a bit OCD in organisation and love my desk being organised. Walking around Paper chase is worringly one of my favourite things to do! Getting pampered also makes me very happy. Manicures, pedicures, facial, massages etc. They feel so decadent and a complete luxury. x
I loved Cygnet Sian, highly recommend for a sunny day/evening. Haha, I love a wander round Paperchase too, especially the Tottenham Court Road branch! Pedicures are one of my favourite treats, I rarely have facials or massages, but I always enjoy them when I do. Think it’s time I spoilt myself! x
I did the 100 happy days challenge in Jan-March and it was so much fun. I did it on instagram and basically all of my photos were of (1) food or (2) people. Oh, and at least two photos of my bed because getting into bed at the end of a looong day is one of the best feelings! 😉
It is fun isn’t Kate? I haven’t posted a picture of my bed yet but no doubt there will be one before the 100 days are up!
I agree with the street art – I just started snapping it when I saw it and now I think I am in a cycle where I notice it more so I snap it more so I notice it more etc. I especially like the traffic signs that have been altered with stickers and I love it when I find a new one! I have also discovered a street artist called Stewy who does stencil work that is really pretty. He is currently doing the A-Z of animals and I’m thrilled when I spot another letter! He also does famous British people. I have been know to jump off the bus to take a snap when I see a new piece.
I’ll be keeping my eye out for Stewy’s work now too Bryony! I’ve just discovered Pablo Delgado, he’s doing tiny pieces around Hackney Wick – I spotted a new one last night!
