I literally spent the whole of last year on the hunt for a chest of drawers for the spare room. James and I were both dead set on having something similar to a merchants or apothecary chest which would complement the industrial inspired decor but didn’t want to have to remortgage to get the perfect piece.
The Search
Our problem was it couldn’t be too deep as it would be next to the door opening but needed to be functional and roomy enough to hold a rather large selection of menswear. Everything on eBay was too large, everything antique was too expensive. Then we found a gorgeous vintage piece which was slightly on the small side but then found we couldn’t transport it home without a costly courier fee.
The room has oak doors, skirting boards and floor so I had decided against a wooden chest though hadn’t ruled out the idea of finding a cheap second-hand one that I could paint up.
As we neared the end of the bedroom project I was at the end of my tether. In a last ditch-attempt I searched Google for the umpteenth time and ended up on the Pine Solutions website looking at their white oak range. I wished I could find a vintage version of their 4+3+2 chest of drawers.
The more I looked at it the more I realised it was the perfect size and price (with free delivery too!) but it just didn’t have the overall wow factor.
I’m not sure about you but the idea of buying a brand (like Mattress City) new piece of furniture and then covering it with paint wasn’t one I would usually consider. Most definitely it was old and needed a spruce up but not something that was straight out of the factory. It all seemed a bit wrong.
Paint
After a chat with James we decided that it would be daft not to order it. For an extra few quid and a bit of elbow grease we would get a truly customised piece that was just right for the room. We would just have to get over the fact that we were defacing a perfectly fine piece of furniture.
After the chest arrived James gave it a good sand and then applied a coat of primer, followed by two coats of Farrow and Ball’s Estate Eggshell in Down Pipe applied with a radiator roller to get an even crisp finish. All the recommendations for Annie Sloan came after the paint job but next time we plan to give it a try.
Handles
I then took to the pages of eBay to find some suitable replacement handles. I settled on the reproduction printing shop cup handles at less than a fiver each. Originally I was keen to get nine for each of the drawers but thought too many of them might lose impact so in the end snapped up four of them with a plan to track down some simple iron knobs for the other drawers. As an interim measure I painted the original wooden knobs with the same F&B paint and actually think we’ll stick with these ones as any other iron versions I’ve found cost an absolute fortune.
We are both really pleased with the final result and the original oak finish is just a distant memory!
So folks, have you ever bought a piece of furniture just to change it? Did it seem a bit crazy? Why is it that you can buy a brand new house and think nothing of painting over freshly painted magnolia but it’s a different story when it comes to furniture? Any tales to tell about the search for the perfect wardrobe, table, chairs etc?
{Edit: My husband James was reading this post a few days after it was published and pointed out that the chest is painted in F&B Railings, NOT Down Pipe. I am handing back my Interior Design qualification….}
It looks great! Love the interiors posts 🙂 I’ve never bought something new to paint / change it but I think it’s a great idea if it gets you what you want! I know what you mean though that it somehow feels a bit ‘wrong’ – not the same but when we moved into our house the master bedroom had pale wood effect melamine fitted wardrobes that really weren’t our taste but looked pretty much brand new and we couldn’t really afford to rip them out and start again (plus both sets of parents were horrified by the idea and kept telling us how expensive they would have been!) – we ummed and ahhed about customising them for over a year but it felt a bit wrong to start messing with perfectly good furniture like you say… Eventually we took the plunge a few weeks ago and they are now painted in Annie Sloan pure white and have new handles! Still not my total ideal wardrobes but much better than before and only cost about £30 to make them much more ‘us’. x
Thanks Sarah. Such a tricky one isn’t it when you move in to a house and know the previous owners have splashed out on new pieces that aren’t your taste. As we’re all moving away from the throw-away culture it feels wrong to rip things out that are still fit for purpose.
I bet the updated wardrobes look fab. I must try Annie Sloan! x
I really love the look of the drawers. We were given a set of pine drawers which were meant to do as a stop gap until we could afford to buy something a bit nicer but I’ve been thinking lately of having a go at sprucing them up myself. I’m not particularly crafty and so will definitely be googling step by step tutorials and hoping for the best! I’ve seen a lot about Annie Sloan paint – is the idea that you can paint directly on the wood or it is still advisable to do a bit of a sand down first?
Love those handles too – will definitely be bookmarking them!
Hi Laura you don’t need to do any prep with Annie Sloan other than make sure the surface is clean! If it was a rough surface it might be an idea to sand it but otherwise you don’t need to bother, the paint will stick to anything. I’ve used it on melamine kitchen cupboards, wardrobes and a wooden back door which had stain on and all I did was clean with sugar soap first. If you have a stockist near you the shop selling it usually have good advice about using it. Hope that helps 🙂
Wow, this looks AMAZING. I wish I had the courage to do this but I’m the most un-arty person literally in the world!
We just got an amazing sale deal for a bed and mattress for our spare room but the issue is the bed frame is brown leather and I literally cannot THINK of or find a chest of drawers to go with it. Let me see if I can pluck up the courage to (and convince the other half to let me!) have a go at something like this. Thanks for the inspiration, Lauren. 🙂
Good luck Kate, let us know how you get along with the convincing 😉 x
Thanks for the tips Sarah. Now just need to pluck up the courage to give it a go!
Lauren – I have recently discovered Fairly Light, and am enjoying looking back through the posts for interiors inspiration. Would be great if you could do a post on how you made your lovely ‘&’ lamp on RMS.
Laura
Thanks Laura,
I fully intended to do a DIY for the ampersand and took lots of pics along the way. The thing was it turned into such a palava! It required lots of messing about with wires so I decided against sharing it. I will look at how I can do an easier tutorial in the future.
LOVE this! the chest of drawers look great Lauren! We have a very, very narrow entrance hallway and are currently looking for some shoe storage and wouldn’t mind a project like this so if anyone has any suggestions on where to look for suitable furniture it would be greatly appreciated x
Thanks Emma! Did you see our post recently on entryways? Hopefully there might be some ideas for you there – http://rockmystyle.co.uk/making-an-entrance/ x
Blatantly ripped off Lauren’s cool printer handles for our new wardrobe 🙂
They look ace x
I’d call it ‘artful imitation’ my love x
This looks lovely – well done!
I have just purchased some Annie Sloan Paris Grey chalk paint to spruce up two pine bedside tables that we bought in a charity shop and they look a bit old fashioned! Hopefully paint and some new handles will do the trick.
We also have a pine desk given to us by my other half’s mum and this might get the paint treatment too if the tables are a success!x
Just checking out the Annie Sloan paint chart Marianne, Paris Grey is a beaut. The bedsides tables will look gorgeous x
We are looking to buy and then paint a wardrobe after finding it impossible to find the right thing. So very pleased to see this post!
Did you find eBay the best place to look for handles? I would love to know about any other places that you found with an interesting selection. I can’t get the handles from ohjoystudio out if my mind and can find anything similar!
Hi Kate, yey! Glad to hear I’m not alone in buying something new and painting it.
Do you mean those lovely gold hook type things she has in her studio? I think they are Anthropologie. I love Anthro for handles but find they are a bit pricey. Abodent do a good selection though and might be worth a look x
I’d looked at anthro before but just saw some different ones I like. Need to get cracking with the painting! Also a few good ones on Abodent, so thanks for the tip!
There’s some really lovely gold bamboo style ones that I have my eye on…
love everything about this and totally getting those handles!
Thanks Catherine x
Lauren you might just been my saviour! I’ve been hunting high and low for a chest of drawers for the nursery and I think this just might be it! I think a pot of the softest paint is in order so I’ll also be checking out Annie Sloan!
