Don’t they? certainly paired with a sexy smoky eye. As it happens I am always a bit confused by the term “nude”, I see a true nude nude as almost fleshy in tone, and to be perfectly honest that’s quite a difficult hue to pull off. I (rightly or wrongly) tend to say nude when I actually mean a “natural lip” or a “YLBB” (your lips but better) shade.
Here are my top five nude-y/natural/YLBB favourites (and believe me I have tried HUNDREDS) which are all under twelve quid. I’ll do my absolute best to describe each colour in detail because let’s face it, they do look rather similar in the tube.
Rimmel Kate Lasting Finish in 17 £5.49
For the money I think these Kate Moss branded lipsticks are excellent, a fancy finish that is genuinely long-lasting without drying out your lips. They actually remind me of Chanel, yes really. This is probably the most obvious pigmented colour from my top five, with definite mauve undertones.
For Spring number 16 is also worth a butchers – a gorgeous orange coral.
You can purchase Rimmel at Boots.
& Other Stories Pointelle Flesh £12.00
This is perhaps the most genuinely “nude” of my picks and certainly the glossiest. As the name would suggest it is a fleshy hue and looks lovely when paired with grey/and or metallics on the eye.
The packaging is super chic and it is very moisturising with a sheerer finish than the others, a good choice for those who rarely wear lipstick at all.
& other Stories has a beautifully designed on-line website and a HUGE store on Regent Street in London. You could spend a whole day in there I swear.
Sleek Lipstick Palette in Ballet £8.99
This is a BRILLIANT find. You get 4 colours, in various shades of beige, brown and pink with matt, gloss and satin finishes. You can then literally mix them up until your heart’s content (or until you create the perfect YLBB hue!)
I like to combine Swan Lake (a medium pink matt) with Plie (a fleshy gloss) on top.
I am yet to try other items from this brand but next time I’m at Superdrug I will definitely be investing, so impressed am I but the quality of the palette.
E.L.F Runway Pink £5.00
One of the more expensive options from this super budget brand, runway pink actually pulls more mauve/brown but does have a lovely very expensive satin feeling consistency. It is also one of the most long-lasting I have tried.
If I am particularly pale this can look a little drab but suits my Mum’s more olive toned skin beautifully.
E.L.F is only available on-line and believe me when I say you will spend a LONG TIME browsing.
“B” Doll’s House £7.99
This is probably my overall favourite, especially in terms of colour, a flattering peachy pink (excellent on blondes) it has a creamy almost opaque coverage and makes your lips look that little bit poutier.
I would recommend applying, blotting and re-applying so as to increase longevity as due to the nature of the texture it’s not exactly the most long-lasting. Smears on your teacup are a small price to pay for looking this fabulous.
“B.” is available exclusively at Superdrug
Do you love a nude? What is your go-to brand and colour of choice? Do tell.
I love ELF since I stocked up on a few freebies from your pretty naughty party they have been one of my go-to make up brands. They have recently opened their first UK store too in Cardiff and it really doesn’t dissapoint – defintley worth paying a visit when your next in Wales xx
Wow you lucky thing! I didn’t know they had opened up a store?! it would be so great to see the colours in “real life” x
Nude only applies to Caucasian skin?
Hi Jessie, no of course not, these are my personal top five favourites and I do have Caucasian skin. I did ask if readers would share so – what’s your favourite nude/natural lip colour?
WOW. WOW. HURRAH. I’ve *just* discovered RMS after being there right from the start of RMW (married three years+ with a little boy now).
Huge congratulations on your pregnancy – you will love being a Mum.
Thank you for this new blog for me to drool lovingly over 🙂
PS-I’d just ran out of mascara, i’m going to get the boots natural jobby this very day.
Stripey love. Anne.x
Hello there *waves* so glad you found us! – hope you love the mascara as much as me 🙂
Oooh, FYI i bought the mascara last week and it was on offer for ONE ENGLISH POUND!!
A pound?! bloody hell! BARGAIN.
I’ll be giving these a try. I’m much more inclined to try out new things when they’re reasonably priced… nearly all give you change from a tenner! Fab!
Hi Kim! I do love a luxe item as much as the next person but I find “drugstore” brands are really picking up the pace with quality etc x
I’m a recent nude convert. After trying various nudes and suffering from “corpse lips” (MAC Myth, I’m looking at you!), I caved and treated myself to Tom Ford Spanish Pink. More of a your-lips-but-better rather than a true nude but I love it.
God job of finding these purse friendly beauts O’Shea! A £40 lipstick habit is definitely something I DON’T need.
I love Tom Ford’s Blush Nude, Spanish Pink was orange-ish on me (because of my yellow skin I think!) but looked lush on the lady at the counter. Try the B one at Superdrug – I think you will like it!
I much prefer the YLBB term than ‘nude’ as a) on me (white skin), a true ‘nude’ lip looks awful anyway (even with a smoky eye) and b) it really is about time we came up with some better names that don’t exclude anyone who isn’t white!
I’m not having a go BTW because you’ve coined a new one and those terms are in everyday use and its not just makeup (eg plasters, tights etc etc!!)
Loving the makeup posts 🙂
If anyone out there could recommend a nude for olivey type skin and dark hair that would be great! I never seem able to find a shade that doesnt make me look totally washed out xx
I’ve got an olive skin-tone and dark hair and swear by Nars ‘Belle De Jour’… I wore it on my wedding day and it’s never left my make up bag since!
*Waves* – this is a cult favourite, and it looked FAB on you (Katie) for W-day, you should go into Space NK and have them put it on you Hannah!
I have the Kate one which I love but my true fave is a more pinky nude, MAC’s creme cup!
Hi Caroline! Creme Cup is my favourite MAC lipstick 🙂
Ooh great! I shall do just that! Thank you 🙂 xx
