When it comes to fancy dress I’ve always thought that you either loved it or hated it and that was you for life, you were either a fancy dress person or not and, rather like the football team you support, there was no switching sides down the line.
Perhaps surprisingly given my love of capes and ponchos I’ve never really been a fan of fancy dress. However, chatting with my friend Alice over a glass of wine earlier this week about her Halloween party fancy dress outfit dilemma (the theme is celebrities who died too young, Alice is keen not to to be one of many Marilyns or Amys), I started to feel a little envious that, because I’m going on holiday to Iceland next Thursday, I’m missing out on my one big opportunity to dress up this year. They don’t really do Halloween in Iceland, I just checked, however half of the population believe in elves so swings and roundabouts I guess.
Time was your only female Halloween fancy dress option in this country was a witch, or perhaps a cat, but since the trend for anything goes fancy dress came over from the States dressing up on 31 October has been taken to a whole new level. Obviously my first task when I was planning this feature was to trawl the internet for pictures of celebrities in Halloween fancy dress. I like to see a well-executed fancy dress couple and the world of celebrity does not disappoint on this front. After extensive research my three favourites are 1) Cindy Crawford and Rande Gerber as Slash and Axl Rose from Guns N’ Roses 2) Dermot O’Leary and wife Dee Kopanng as Karl Lagerfeld and and Karl’s cat Choupette 3) Kate Moss and Jamie Hince as Morticia and Gomez Adams.
If I was going to a Halloween fancy dress party with an open theme this year and I couldn’t find someone to be Slash to my Axl I would totally go as Nancy from The Craft (second from the left in the picture above if you’re not aware of this nineties classic teen movie). I love Nancy’s Clueless-gone-very-bad style and it wouldn’t be too hard, or expensive – both important considerations – to recreate.
Right, I’m off to watch The Craft in preparation for next year. How do you feel about fancy dress? Are you dressing up this year? What’s the best fancy dress theme you’ve ever heard? And your favourite ever fancy dress outfit? Any ideas for Alice? And any suggestions for a lipstick to recreate Nancy’s look?! Do share in the comments section below.
Hate fancy dress (boo hiss – what a miser) but LOVE The Craft. Definitely a high school sleepover classic!
I won’t be dressing up this year but will instead be channeling all my halloween efforts into dressing up my eldest, who is already ridicuously excited about it all. Oh to be 3 again!
Yay, another fan of The Craft! Have you decided on an outfit theme yet?
I totally love Fairuza Balk in this film…she is deliciously evil.
Black tulip by Rimmel for her lips (if they still make it) – I used to very much rock the goth look back in the day 🙂
It’s the Haworth Halloween weekend this one coming (Dragon parade Saturday) so I need to dress the almost-three-year-old and have a nod to something wicked myself. So far, I’ve bought an enormous pumpkin….(!)
Speaking of fancy dress, we’re having a pirate party for the 3rd birthday next month, now THAT is an easy costume I could happily wear any day. Lover of stripes as I am 🙂

Isn’t she brilliant?! Looks like Black Tulip is still available, as a lipliner, thank you for the tip. The dragon parade sounds such fun and a pirate party, brilliant! Oh to have the social life of a three year old! x
light as a feather stiff as a board. light as a feather stiff as a board. light as a feather stiff as a board.
LOVE The Craft.
So many great quotes!
Another fan of The Craft here.
There are a number of youtube videos of people recreating Nancy’s makeup look on youtube if you need more ideas re lipstick.
Ooh, will have to check them out, thanks Sarah!
Also LOVE the Craft! Watched it recently actually, had been thinking about it for a couple of days and then like magic it was randomly on TV…..spooky!!!
Did anyone else try the light as a feather thing during sleepovers?? Hopefully it wasn’t just me and my crazed friends???
Love a good dressing up – I’m attending a conference at the end of November which includes a Gala Dinner in which we are to dress in a 1940s styleee and I’m going the full shabang! Have myself a land girl outfit and have booked in for vintage hair and make up! Fingers crossed I wins a prize!!
That is so spooky! Dressing up all 1940s sounds so much fun – fingers crossed for a prize!
Uh, I have never watched the craft, feel like i am missing out – it’s going on my girly netflix list tonight.
Miranda, I’m taking my husband to Iceland for a surprise 30th birthday treat, i need to cross reference notes with you!! We are going 3rd – 10th Jan (hope he doesn’t secretly read RMS!) – i’ve got accom booked for the first 5 nights in a mix of air bnb and hotels but looking for somewhere for the last 2 nights… east coast preferably. i am looking forward to reading all about your trip and taking notes – have a great trip, hope you see the lights!!!
Jack and I are doing Mary Poppins and Bert this year. I can’t wait – one of my favourite films and actually reasonably low cost to pull together (although i do want to spend 30 quid on that parrot brolly from the Disney store!)
Thank you Nicola! I’ll definitely be doing a post about Iceland on my return. I’m staying at a hostel in Reykjavik that I read about in Condé Nast Traveller (my bible!) and then a couple of nights in a boutique hotel about 45 minutes outside of Reykjavik. Have you come across the I Heart Reykjavik blog? I’ve booked to do her walking tour on my first day there (inspired by Adam and the tours he did in Paris and Lisbon). There are lots of ideas for things to do and some places to stay outside of Reykjavik too. Love the Mary Poppins and Bert idea. The parrot brolly sounds like an excellent if pricey addition to your outfit!
Ooh fab, thanks for the recommendation will check that out. I’ve booked in to hotel ranga which is also about 45 mins from Reyk but have a cancellation option so will see what your report says 🙂 have fun!!! Xx
Please report back on Iceland. It is my husband’s 30th birthday next year and Iceland is on the list of possible places to go for it !
Absolutely Claire, expect a post at some point in November!
