About five years ago I was thumbing through my Christmas edition of Ideal Home and clapped my eyes on an absolutely gorgeous country farmhouse. The owners had a sumptuous velvet chesterfield and a huge island unit in the kitchen but personally I was blown away by the dove paper garland hanging over the bath. That’s right the homeowners had decked out the bathroom for Christmas.
When house-buying I’ve heard people say they realise they’ve fallen hook, line and sinker for a property when they decided where they’ll put their Christmas tree. When I viewed our cottage for the first time I wasn’t just working our where the Norwegian Spruce would go but also if the bathroom was worthy of a few of its own decorations. Thankfully it was.
So here you have it, my bathroom subtly made over for Christmas with a heap of honeycomb balls and paper snowflakes. It’s possibly the last time you’ll see the bath with a mint coat as a mini make-over is afoot in the new year. The majority of the balls are from eBay and Wilko but you can pick them up all over the place. I hang with fishing wire from a Command Mini Hook. The lanterns originally hung from the rafters of the barn in our wedding venue.
So this brings me on to ask you if there are any non-conventional areas in your own home that see a sprinkle of glitter, a festoon of fairly lights or a cheeky santa? Most of us decorate our living room and dining able but do you trim up your kitchen or bedrooms to celebrate the festive season?
I didn’t realise that the Christmas tree planning when buying a house was a thing, but that is precisely what I did just over a year ago when we viewed the house we now own! As soon as we walked in the living room I leant in to my husband and pointed out we could fit a massive tree in the window! This weekend, that is exactly what I intend on doing!
At the top of the stairs, on the landing we have a short section of balustrade, I have hung gold sleigh bells at different lengths between the spindles and put some rather fetching red/green/gold ribbon along the hand rail. The bathroom is not really somewhere I had considered for festive trim…until now!!
Have fun decorating this weekend Faye, and make you sure you add something festive to the bathroom too!
Love your bathroom Lauren! Don’t suppose you can remember where you got your shelving/hanging thingy from can you? We are just finishing our bathroom re-furb and want something like this but can’t find anything anywhere! xx
Thanks Jenny.
Would you believe it’s Ikea? I wanted a reclaimed train luggage rack type thing but they were all mega bucks. It’s not hugely sturdy but does the job x
What a lovely bathroom Lauren. Love the bath! My bathroom is still waiting for the extractor fan to be fitted…so I’m not sure paper decorations will last more than a shower but I do love making Christmas happen all over.
I have just had a box delivered this lunch time from the paper snowflake company so I’m currently filling the kitchen-diner with a snowstorm 😀 Thoroughly reccommend them for amazing snowflakes… dead easy to put up and the 50cm ones look amazing.
I think I need some 50cm ones in my life Amanda!
Honeycombs and Snowflakes are ace in the storage stakes too aren’t they – they take up hardly any room when they have to be taken down.
Hmm maybe I shall put some Christmas candles in the bathroom….. we don’t have a bath tub though just a big shower
So very excited about Christmas…! 🙂
Me too Lynn.
Candles in the bathroom sounds very festive.
Um, I now need to decorate my bathroom! We do have twinkly lights outside the bathroom window so you can lie in the tub, gaze out over the garden, and watch the pretty lights but I think it needs a smattering of honeycomb balls to complete the look. Don’t worry my window isn’t overlooked!!! Wilko is the best for paper decorations. Love it! x
Glad to hear it Charlotte!
Honeycombs on the window would be fabulous x
You are just the cutest. I can’t wait to get the tree up here but we’ll be cutting it fine! The place is still a bit of a building site and although swapping the tinsel for a tin of farrow & ball will be fun I’ve insisted on a tree, even if it gets trashed with paint and plaster! Maybe doing the bathroom isn’t such a bad idea after all! xx
Hope it’s going well my lovely. Trees covered in paint and plaster could catch on. They’ll be all the rage next year x
Love this Lauren! I’m my opinion, you can never have too many Christmas decorations. We moved into our new house 6 months ago and I’ve been dying to get the tree up in the bay window- we’re going to get it this weekend, so excited!! Xx
Trees in bay windows are immense Becky. Have a lovely time decorating x
I love the colour of your bath tub! So different! x
Thanks Steph, it’s Laura Ashley. I think it’s Eau de Nil x
