This summer’s most unlikely style icon is Magnum P.I., a moustache-sporting, Ferrari-driving, Hawaiian-shirt-wearing TV detective from the 1980s, who was played by Tom Selleck.*
His style icon status is not for his bushy moustache, or a his flash car, but for the attention-grabbing tropical prints that were his signature style as he solved crimes on the island of Hawaii. I’m pretty partial to a print myself, so it’s no great surprise that I’m a big fan of this trend. Here’s five of my favourite tropical high street finds.
*Who you might be more familiar as Richard, the older doctor who dated Monica in Season 2 of Friends.
Tropical Print Blazer, ASOS, £55
Probably not for you if you’re a newbie when it comes to wearing prints, this ASOS blazer is unashamedly loud, but looks surprisingly smart thrown over a tee and jeans.
High Waisted Printed Shorts, Zara, £29.99
I’m a little bit in love with these shorts from Zara, which would be perfect worn with a plain tee, a pair of flip-flops and a tan. If dresses are more your style Zara have turned the same print into a short-sleeved shift.
Palm Print Shift Dress, Oasis at ASOS, £55
Who’d have thought a palm tree print could look so chic? I would wear this black and white Oasis dress with a pair of white Birkenstocks. Totally trying the prettily-plaited hairstyle on my next night out too.
Tropical Playsuit, Superdry at ASOS, £34.99
One to buy now and save for your summer holidays, this Superdry playsuit has got beach to beach bar written all over it.
Tropical Print Shirt, Pull & Bear, £19.99
At the more subtle end of the tropical trend, this shirt from Pull & Bear looks cute buttoned up, but would look equally good worn as a casual open jacket over a white vest.
Ooh I love a good print especially in the summer! Trying to be good but I think I will have to pop into Zara to get that amazing jacket, you can never have too many printed jackets right?!
Absolutely, printed jackets rule!
