After falling into the ‘must do better’ category for my summer capsule, I’m determined to get back on it for my autumn wardrobe. My Pinterest board is packed to the rafters with very elegant ladies sporting stylish grey knitwear. I hugely apologise if you’re after a bright and bold jumpers post but today it’s all about the neutral knit.
As you can see from the inspiration gallery below, I like to think a grey jumper is very versatile. I love the look of a thick chunky knit paired with a leather skirt or layered with some tailored trousers.
At the moment I have just one threadbare, very bobbly turtleneck from Zara which I’m not convinced will make it through another year. Let’s take a look at a few plain jumpers that have caught my eye.
Warehouse
Warehouse is having a bit of a moment with the arrival of Creative Director Emma Cook. Their reinvention means loads of gorgeous pieces (and some slightly off-the-wall ones too). The Pearlescent Jumper looks smashing paired with a skirt and the neckline is very in. £45. However if you prefer less embellishment the longer line Boxy Jumper is just the ticket to wear with straight leg jeans.
Uniqlo
Uniqlo is one of those stores I often forget about unless I’m in the Big Smoke, however everything I’ve bought from there washes well and is always good quality. Their Cable Cardigan is 5% cashmere so hand wash but the £29 price tag would make it a super soft addition to the wardrobe. Plus the sweater is only £14.90 on offer at the moment. Get it while you can.
Next
I usually end up with one or two new longline cardigans a year as they’re perfect to throw over thinner jumpers and bundle on as an extra layer. I’m particularly liking this Next Cosy Button Through Cardigan with turned up sleeves. Even higher in the snuggle stakes is their £34 Grey Pocket Cardigan which comes in blush too.
French Connection
It’s possibly too early for the thickest cable knit jumpers and sweaters with snuggly cowl necks but French Connection give it a go with their wool-blend knitted Roll Neck Jumper.
The White Company
One to put on your Christmas list as The White Company can be a bit spendy but every girl needs some cashmere in her life. I currently only own a pair of cashmere socks so maybe this could be my year? The Cashmere Exposed Seam Jumper could make a lot of sense on a cost per wear basis as it’s so versatile and can be dressed up and down, plus it’s hand wash too so you don’t have to make a trip to the dry cleaners. Winner.
Zara
Like your sweaters oversized? Then how about Zara’s Round Neck Sweater? Also at £29.99 is their Front Tie Jumper adding a bit of fancy detailing to a usually plain knit.
Asos
Asos is always great for a cardi or two. I have included Charlotte’s latest discovery (even though it’s not grey – big cheat), this Ribbed Cardigan which me and most of Mrs O’Shea’s friends have ordered. For more of the greyer variety check out their large selection of longline cardis.
Does anyone else favour a neutral knit? Where do you buy yours from and what do you have in your wardrobe?
Uniqlo cashmere cannot be beaten for price. I wash mine on wool in the machine and so far so good. I have the charcoal v neck sweater and round neck cardi. I feel
The need for a fuzzy mohair addition to my knitwear this year – HM have some I’m trying to decide between at the mo
Great to know Uniqlo is a good shout for cashmere Rachel.
On the mohair front I really wanted to include this Zara frilled number but sadly no stock 🙁
I LOVE a grey sweater, I have far too many of them but they are ridiculously practical. I also love Uniqlo, although I tend to buy the merino wool rather than cashmere versions as I find them excellent for our ridiculous British cold/not really cold weather and very good value indeed. I have so many of their jumpers and cardigans for work, brilliant basics in a few colours (generally black, grey and navy plus the occasional bright one for good measure). Plus ditto Rachel on putting them on the wool cycle in the washing machine, they come out brilliantly. In fact I am wearing one now. And the White Company ones are generally good quality, I have the exact one you pictured on my wish list – they always have discount codes circulating to make them a little more reasonable. Gap have also done some good jumpers for the past couple of years, including slightly boxy cashmere versions. I haven’t checked this year yet, but always worth a look. Thanks Lauren!!
Hi Annie, I worked for Gap many moons ago as a Saturday girl and always loved their knitwear.
I am off to peruse Uniqlo again for a few more basics x
I love any type of knitwear – I’ve been banned from buying more by my other half! & other stories have a gorgeous slightly oversized knit jumper with a high crew neck for only £35 – I’ve bought it in navy but they had it in grey too (and orange!!), I’d totally recommend if you want something a little slouchy! http://www.stories.com/gb/Ready-to-wear/Knitwear/Knit_Sweater/582940-123974881.1
Oh Katie – this is perfect. Have my eye on a pair of shoes from &OtherStories too. They have so many nice things in there at the moment x
This is the perfect post for me – I have a slight addiction to grey jumpers that is only marginally less than my addiction to striped sweaters! Am loving so many on your list, particularly that Next cardigan. My go-to shop for sweaters is normally Hush. Try these:

Hush are a bit spendy but the do know how to so ‘slouch’ well!
Love hush Kate, and isn’t their brochure always so dreamy? The styling makes me want one of everything!
Lovely choices there x
