Ahh the ‘January’ sales. The ones that actually start in November. Guaranteed to wipe the smug smile from an early Christmas shopper, there’s nothing quite like finding out all your shopping has now been massively reduced. I have been the victim of this many times and I’m sure you have too.
However there are bargains to be had both before and after Christmas. Last year I had an experience which left me feeling very pleased with myself. I’d bought my Oasis leopard coat online before Christmas but was undecided about the teddy boy style collar. At over £100 I made the decision to return it to the store. While my card was being refunded I asked if the coat had been reduced in the sales. The assistant checked for me and found it was now £35! I promptly bought it again. All thoughts on being a fifties throwback diminished for the sake of £80.
Other sale purchases don’t hold such happy memories. I have bought some serious tat in my time, swayed by big discounts even though it’s something I wouldn’t consider at all at full price. Some that spring to mind; wool trousers that itched so much I had to wear tights underneath, short sleeved jumpers leaving freezing arms exposed and all manner of things that didn’t really fit. I used to come home reeling off how much I had ‘saved’ to attempt to convince myself I would have bought the piece otherwise.
Due to my capsule wardrobe and a surprise blanket of snow in my hometown I haven’t ventured to the sales. Though I may have nipped online to stock up on a few accessories. I have also firmly planted my feet in the adult camp by searching for a good deal on a food processor. How times have changed.
What have you been buying in the sales? Any great purchases? What are your tips for making sure you secure the best deals? Anything from years gone by that you really wish you hadn’t bought?
Having saved all year in a ceramic teramundi (to beat the temptation of dipping in to it!) I treated myself to a new Mulberry on Boxing Day. At 50% off it was still VERY expensive but I definitely earned it and it will hopefully last a lifetime! X
Oooooooh very fancy Hannah. You most definitely earned it x
I cannot face the sales as like you Lauren I find I just buy things I didn’t actually want. Plus much prefer all the new clothes that are starting to appear!!! I’ll only buy it if it was something I already wanted as then I feel like it’s a genuine saving. One thing I do with internet shopping is add a few things to my basket that I want and then if they get reduced, amazing, and saves time browsing through all the sale pages. Not all websites keep things in your basket that long but JL and Boden do so managed to get a few things. Highlight was a new Ironing board cover!!! Tres boring! x
Anything that makes ironing more fun is a good buy Charlotte! x
Only real sales purchase has been a half price whistles wool coat which still wasn’t cheap but will be worn to death! I have been very conscious of not buying lots of junk this year but even with a Boxing Day trip to Liverpool One I couldn’t find anything to make me want to part with my money!
Do you think the sales have been a bit disappointing this year Bryony? Nothing really took my fancy at all when I was looking online.
My trick is to make a list of things needed for myself, the house etc and only buy sale items if they’re on the list. Works a treat…
Very good tip Annie x
I got very lucky at M&S on Boxing Day. 600 thread king size bed set half price from £160, plus using up the last of our wedding vouchers made them £11!! Yes, I do get excited about bedsheets!
£11?! Amazing!
I got some lovely underwear in the sales this year. I was astonished to find two matching silk sets. Yesterday i found out I had won a burlesque photoshoot so they will be coming in useful. I also got a couple of skirts for work. I have made some stupid purchases before usually clothing that didn’t fit properly. This year I felt like a grown up for making sensible purchases.
Oh hello burlesque shoot! Very difficult to get matching sets, you did very well there Claire x
I have been lusting after a leather biker from The Kooples that was waaaay too expensive at £625 but had a quick check after I got my bonus just before Christmas and it had gone down to £450 – still very expenny but I’m so chuffed with it!
A gorgeous leather jacket lasts forever Lauren. On a cost per wear basis it will work out in the long run.
Usually I go wild in the sales and buy hundreds of little bits from high street stores that I would never pay full price for and never actually wear anyway!
This year I changed my strategy and bought a Mulberry Bayswater at 40% followed by a beautiful pair of Gina shoes reduced from £450 to £135!! Very pleased with my bargains this year!
I’m not surprised you’re pleased Holly. Amazing bargains you’ve managed to get for yourself! x
This year I did my most extravagant sale shopping ever – I bought a new bathroom suite! It wasn’t cheap but I did get about £500 off it which very much helped. I also may have splashed out a little in The White Company on new towels for my as-yet unfitted bathroom…
I like a bit of DIY to keep you going through the winter Sara. You must let us know how the bathroom project progresses. x
I’ve gone a LITTLE crazy on wrapping paper for next year… over 280 metres should be plenty. (I honestly do not know what came over me and every shop I went into… and I knew I’d already got too much… but by the end some were 30p… AND lovely)!! But otherwise I do stick to the list of things I need. Mainly though I stock up on gifts for kids parties. Things like sparkly purses, bracelets and nail art things from accessorize and bits and pieces from paperchase are great to have in for when my children get invites and for people’s birthdays when I don’t really know them that well.
But other than a few bits and pieces for the children for next year I’ve found the sales a bit confusing. Everything I’ve had my eye on seems to be the same price in the sale as it was before Christmas…? The coffee machine I wanted is exactly the same amount except it now has a big red label over it saying SALE. How cheeky!
I bought some lovely floral wellies from Fat Face for £15, thinking ahead to Glastonbury! Hopefully I won’t need them as it will be gloriously sunny and dry, but if I don’t then it’s only £15 I’ve spent and I can use them for walking 🙂
Other than that I’ve not really bothered with sales this year, there isn’t anything I need or want particularly…
