Today’s Reader Request comes from the lovely Beth who is looking for advice on what to wear for her upcoming engagement shoot.
Like me she’s a big fan of black, faux fur and a dash of leopard print so I’m happy to get stuck in and suggest a few ideas. Over to the bride-to-be…
I was wondering whether the style gurus at Rock My Style can help me. Me and my lovely husband-to-be are having our engagement shoot imminently and despite protests from myself it is happening in a muddy woodland in Bucks. My other half is convinced there will be no other member of the public there and therefore is not as embarrassed by the entire thing. However, I have no idea what to wear, my hopes of looking retro and chic in London have vanished. I am very good at dog walking attire but don’t quite want to look back on it in the years to come and wish I hadn’t worn my granddad’s old sweater. Wellies are a must and a bit of colour so any suggestions would be wonderful! Thanks x
I have to admit until I planned my own wedding I struggled to get my head round the idea of an engagement shoot. Now I think they’re a flipping marvellous idea. They are such a good opportunity to get to know your photographer, understand what poses do and don’t work for you and are a whole lot of fun. You’re going to have a fab time Beth.
Let’s be honest here, it’s unlikely to be more than ten degrees so a cute and flippy dress is out. I’m very inclined to suggest getting your hands on a stylish bright coat with a killer cut. The rather annoying thing about this time of year is it’s freezing but the shops stop selling winter wear. ASOS still have a good selection of coats available such as this Drop Collar Berry one which would look great paired with a leopard scarf to get an animal print kick.
If you’re not too fond of colour (it scares me too) then how about a neutral deviation away from the black with a camel or grey coat? Missguided have a waterfall style in a great shade of camel.
No-one rocks the neutral engagement look quite like our very own Lolly. With leathers, furs, muted tones and heaps of texture please have a quick gander in the deepest RMW archives to see her stunning shoot.
If you’d prefer to be more casual then a friend of mine wore a fab Barbour style jacket with a nipped in waist on her engagement shoot to show off her figure. I’ve also seen lots of shoots with the fiancée donning a quilted well-fitting bodywarmer or fur gilet paired with a muted shirt. Zara have a rather snazzy fitted number which has just come into stock.
Whatever coat you choose just make sure it pleasantly contrasts with your other half’s jacket so you complement each other rather than clash. If I were you I’d stay away from matching colours completely but each to their own! Down a similar line decide the style you’re both going to go for so one of you doesn’t look more overdressed than the other. Do you fancy ultra posh or smart casual, retro or modern?
I searched the internet high and low for a suitable image of his and hers wellies to use in the header but couldn’t find one. Obviously wellingtons are an absolute given for a park shoot. It may be muddy (or hopefully snowy) underfoot so it might not be possible to don your favourite shoes but do consider taking them along for a couple of shots.
Bring along a couple of accessories; your favourite hat and a selection of scarves so you can change your look half way through the shoot and add a bit of variety to your photos.
Speaking of adding variety then by the time you’ve relaxed and got into the swing of things you might feel inclined to whip off your coat to reveal another outfit underneath. Perhaps a cute plain jumper, a long sleeved dress or your favourite black skinnies. Best to avoid anything too busy as it can end up being quite distracting in the final images.
From a personal opinion I’d suggest going for a timeless style rather than anything mega fashionable and opt for well-fitting garments rather than oversized. Obviously go for something you feel really comfortable in and something that feels really ‘you’ so you can relax and enjoy the fun.
One thing I completely forgot to ask for on my own engagement shoot was a ring shot so don’t forget to mention to your photographer the images you’d really like to capture.
Enough from me, please feel free to chime in with your own suggestions and links for Beth’s winter engagement shoot. Have you seen winter wear on your shopping trips you think would be ideal? And advice you’d like to put forward from your own e-shoot experience?
I know Beth’s worries about this as I had the same for our engagement shoot last Spring. We had ours in the countryside and it was a bit rainy and therefore muddy but I was determined to still wear a dress as I rarely wear anything else. In the end I opted for a plain pale blue button through dress with a coral cardi and converse – I had intended on wearing proper shoes but because of the mud, had to make do with my cons. Wellies will be perfect – especially if they are colourful. In the end I threw on my battered mac too as it got cold.
Our photographer recommended that plain colours rather than pattern work better and having a colour which both of you are wearing links you together in the shot – so we chose blue.
Ultimately, your engagement shoot is a way of you and your photographer getting to know each other better resulting with beautiful photos of you and your husband-to-be being natural and just having a fun time. Try to keep to your regular style and in what you feel happy and comfortable in.
I believe a few of our shots can be seen on the homepage of our photographer here to give you an idea of how we organised ours in the countryside: http://www.166photography.co.uk
Just enjoy!
Hi Zoe, I think I spy you on the homepage – gorgeous shots!
Love you chose Converse x
I would say wear something that feels like you. You want to feel comfortable, relax and have fun. We had loads of fun on our engagement shoot. I wore a cute dress which looked amazing when I spun around, tights, my favourite pair of boots, a scarf, a cardi and a coat. That way I could layer up and layer down to get different shots. I would recommend that.
If you’re able to why not take a couple of outfits so you can change.

Aww Nikki you look so relaxed, definitely looks like you had a lot of fun.
Great point about having an outfit change halfway through x
This couldn’t be a more timely post! Paddy and I are in exactly the same quandary for our shoot tomorrow.
As always, RMW, you’re answering the questions we’re asking ourselves.
Beth, have an amazing time! Working for the charity I do we have wellies, but they’re bright yellow – not sure that it’s the kind of look I’m going for so my trusty Hunters will have to do!
x
Yellow Hunters are the best Debs! x
Wellies are brilliant for adding a splash of colour. I wore my bright red hunters for our (outdoors, in winter, countryside) engagement shoot plus a red hat and a dash of red lippy.
Plain colours are definitely better than patterns/prints. My jumper with a picture of a leopard on it (as opposed to a leopard print jumper!) didn’t work that well but it didn’t matter so much as I just had my body warmer over it.
Here are the two of mine that are on our photographers page (and FYI, he’s awesome, you should definitely book him)

Love you matched your lippy to you wellies. Great touch x
Great timing! I too am in a quandary about what to wear for my engagement shoot which is due to take place later this month. In complete contrast to our rustic, countryside wedding, our pre-wedding shoot is taking place in London where we are hoping to capture shop windows, neon signs ambient light etc. A bit of urban glam! Like Lauren, I too am a big fan of black, faux fur and leopard print, but my shoot will be taking place late afternoon / early evening to fit around work. I’m now beginning to doubt my initial plan of wearing black skinnies, heeled boots, monochrome stripe top and smart black jacket with a pop of red lippy – if it’s nighttime should I wear something more colourful to stand out?!
Hi Verity, oooh very sophisticated having an evening shoot. Might be best to have a chat with your Photographer but with neon lights black might be a good shout x
I had a wander around good old M&S on Monday and they had lot of spring bright coats in store. I fell in love a beautiful mint green one but it was only in plus sizes – I did seriously consider binge eating for a moment! I love a dress in winter, I think they look really cute layered up and with thick tights. But the most important think will be to feel comfortable so you can get natural shots.
Mint green is such a pretty colour Claire. I often wonder why companies choose to do different collections for petite, standard and plus size. It can be such a tease!
We had the same problem as our shoot was in February. I wore my favourite cosy jumper with a leather jacket, big furry scarf and skinny jeans. The scarf was good to take on and off to change the look. I’d recommend one accessory like that to make all the difference rather than dressing up too much and potentially not feeling as comfortable. It’s soooo important to feel comfortable as it shows more than anything in the pictures. You could add interest to a casual outfit with your red lippy and a decent blowdry, and don’t forget to wear a top that brings out your eye colour for those close ups!
Fab advice Carly x
Spotted this coat beauty in M&S – the blue is beautiful! Lovely with navy skinnies, wellies and a bright scarf?

Rachie xo
The striped lining is fab Rachie x
I spent sooooo long trying to decide my outfit(s) for our E-shoot.
One little suggestion – don’t clash your coat with your outfit! I love the coat I wore (my carpet coat!) and my outfit underneath was fairly cute, but the red shorts & burgundy coat clashed and the carpet coat didn’t do up (I have had it since I was 17!) so it’s not ideal!
Oh and one fab idea a friend gave me was to have your make-up trial on the day of your E-shoot – perfect photo friendly make up (and a great way to see how your make-up will look in photos!)

Lastly, enjoy! My other half was a bit apprehensive about it – didn’t really see the point, but in the end it was me who was super shy and him doing bear impressions!!!!!!! haha! xxx
Happy days Rebecca! That MAC red lip on you is smashing. x
Aww thanks Lauren! I did love that lippy, should really get some of my own!
Funny looking back at the shoot (and reading what I wrote again….cringe! haha!)
xx
Just picked up this gorgeous leopard print bag from Accessorise, that I thought would go lovely with that Berry Coat from ASOS

What a bargain too Lorna. Did you pick one up for me too?! x
A very similar berry coat is flying its way through cyber space to me to go with my favourite leopard print scarf.Thank you for all the advice, as spot on as ever. X
Glad to have helped Beth. Have fun x
