Is there any item of clothing that screams summer holidays louder than a maxi dress? You just cannot beat the swishiness over your toes as you’re strolling along a beach, or weaving through a market on a hot and dusty city break. It’s also the classic day-to-night summer outfit. Wear over your bikini with flip flops during the day, and add a denim jacket and gold accessories for the night. Practical and comfy to travel in, and I reckon most of the picks below would be crease-proof enough to stuff inside a suitcase.
Totally Tropical
Sticking with the holiday vibe, there are SO many brightly-coloured floor-skimming frocks in the shops and online at the moment. Head over to Boohoo or Asos if you’re a fan of vibrant hues or a palm print. Our Editor Lauren wore a gorgeous tropical red maxi to the last Rock My meeting, which proves that maxis aren’t just for the beach.
Keep it simple
The maxi dresses that I’m currently wearing on repeat are this one and one I bought from Topshop years ago which is similar to this little number. I love the look of this hareem maxi but worry that I might look more MC Hammer than Persian princess. At £22 I should probably just give it a go. And I think this monochrome dress, which Lottie pointed out to me, is such a clever design. The horizontal stripes across the bust create curves whilst the vertical stripes at the bottom are leg-lengthening.
Pretty in Print
My all-time favourite maxi dress is a black and white tie dye one I picked up in Miami a few years ago. Don’t you just love it when you find a dress on holiday that no-one else back home will have? And my all-time favourite frock from my search for this post is this Hush shift dress with a subtle star print.
Floral frocks
As you can see from the header image above, Charlotte is not only Queen of Blogs but also Queen of The Floral Maxi Dress. You can buy similar here. I’m also loving the highly unpractical but oh-so-beautiful long white and floral dresses that seem to be everywhere, this Bershka one in particular.
Have you got any maxis in your wardrobe? Or is your wedding gown the only maxi dress you’ve donned?
I love a maxi. They are my summer staple, I tend to opt for plain/looser fitting styles for day/by the pool and pretty prints for evening.
Love this for day:

And this for evening (It’s a slightly shorter length than maxi but that means I can show of my shoes 🙂 )

Charlotte I saw that red tea dress and the only reason I didn’t include it was because I wasn’t sure if it was a true maxi! Also, don’t you think the Asos model looks like Kelly Brook? x
Gah, I love that red maxi. Will have a look later to see if they do it in talk (that version would be midi on me).
Shall we start a club? 💃🏼💃🏻💃🏼
I’m there Lynsey x
I love a maxi! However my favourite striped one was eaten by an escalator!! Shirt girl problems!!
OMG Rachel! This is my worst nightmare, did the escalator essentially rip the dress?! I always try to avoid wearing a maxi when I know I’m going to be using the tube a lot!
TOTAL nightmare! (You probably need to treat yourself to a new one 😛) x
When I was about six I got my shoelace stuck in the M&S escalator. Hands down the most terrifying experience of my life as I was convinced I was going to get sucked down it. The nice staff at M&S did give me a free Ribena from the food hall after which made up for it 😉
Oh little Lauren! There’s nothing a carton of Ribena can’t fix 😂
I have a maxi dress. I love to wear it. It is so stylish and cool. Perfect for every occasion.
Thanks for this post.
