I am one. The feel of it, the scent of it. There are so many leather pieces I’m currently coveting I would need to take out a second mortgage and potentially sell my soul just to be able to afford half of them. It all started with a black Kooples biker jacket about 4 years ago, as soon as I saw it I knew it absolutely HAD to be mine.
It’s been a great investment piece, I’ve worn it every Autumn, Winter and Spring since. Rock My Style’s Lauren stroked it and remarked that it felt like “butter” which it very much does does, it’s a real pleasure to wear. The only ever-so-slight complaint is that (in usual biker jacket style) the zip sits at a diagonal across your chest and has always been a little on the tight side. I always feel that when it is undone it hangs in a not altogether favourable asymmetric fashion, am I making sense? With my post pregnancy bra size still larger than usual, I’m really feeling the pinch and I don’t fancy the idea of wearing it unzipped all season, not least because of the associated chill factor.
And so the search for a new leather jacket begins, although I don’t want a replacement as such (I’m still holding out for my old faithful fitting in the not too distant future). I’m thinking definitely a straight zip design and perhaps something in an alternative colour to avoid too much similarity. I’ve recently ordered the Helmut Lang number featured above from The Outnet, it certainly wasn’t cheap at £350 but it was a bit less than what I paid for my trusty favourite and it was reduced from £1000……an absolute ruddy bargain then.
As you read this I may already be in possession of it so I’ll let you know the outcome. Apart from the fact it might just look crap, it does have a canvas element – there is a white stripe around the sleeve area. The practical side of me wonders how realistic it is not to walk around with permanently grubby wrists.
Other leather pieces I’m loving are a sexy skirt my Mum treated me to which is just awaiting the right occasion to say Hi, and I’m also toying with the idea of purchasing some trousers. Everyone I know who has a pair says they were worth every penny, and so I should hope so, I’m yet to find any that come in under six hundred quid.
Are you a leather lover?
What has been your most worthwhile purchase?
Seen any amazing jackets or trousers that I quite clearly need?
Please do leave your thoughts and any associated links in the comments section below, they are as always, very much appreciated.
Desperate for a just above the knee leather skirt! A brown battered looking one that isnt shiny – but all the ones I’ve seen are a bit pvc looking!
I know what you mean about the PVC look thing Victoria, I have some leggings that are just borderline, you don’t want to get too close 🙂
Love the jacket in the pic! The Kooples sell ‘leather look’ jeans. They are still pricey but they look amazing and are probably a bit more wearable for everyday. I got a pair and am surprised how often I have worn them already cos they just go with everything but look more interesting than just black jeans (my usual wardrobe staple!).
Hi Caoimhe, I didn’t even know that – will definitely take a look. I do worry about leather trousers getting a bit hot on nights out (!) perhaps the jeans will be a good alternative x
I love leather too – I blame my mother who taught me to only buy leather handbags and shoes instead of the plastic alternatives. I also have a trusty leather biker jacket which I think I can get one more winter out of. It’s a classic shape and style and was from Oasis about 3 years ago purchased during one of their 25% off everything events. Price per wear it must be 0.00000001p or something! I also have a very similar one in grey which gets more wear in spring. I have just treated myself to a leather backpack – I really wanted one but had been looking for a particular style. The only one that came close was the one in Whistles but I just could not justify the spend as I am trying to be better with my money (encouraged by some of the posts on here!). However I then spotted a lovely smart boxy looking black leather backpack on ASOS for £55 and thought that was ok (much better than £285 in Whistles anyway!). I’m so glad I go it – I love it! It’s a great size – big enough for all my bits and bobs but small enough to still be a handbag style and not a normal backpack. I think it will look really cute with all my big winter coats!
Bryony that backpack sounds like a great buy, I was with the NCT girls recently and we were discussing how perhaps a backpack would be better for baby paraphernalia than a standard bag, hands free too.
Where did you get your grey leather jacket from? I’ve never been able to find one, there was an Oxblood and grey mix one in The Kooples last year that I forever regret not buying x
Is that your jacket in the picture?! Oh my – its incredibly stunning!! Love The Outnet – my lovely Anya Hindmarch is accompanying me out to dinner this evening thanks to a good bargain on there.
It’s the one I ordered yes, it’s gorgeous on too….but sadly, very white! I just can’t imagine it not being covered in baby sick/food after about 5 minutes 🙂
I am also a leather lover and I have to agree that the one in the pic is FAB! It is nice to see leather jackets that aren’t just biker style but they so always seem so costly!
I made a girly pink lamb nappa leather jacket in my final year at uni, it had a gathered sleeve head and a similar neckline to your lovely new one. It also had 3 little flounces just under the waist which gave a nice girly feel (if the pink wasn’t already enough!)
I am taking this post as a sign to get on and make myself one… I love the ones with the waterfall fronts! xx
Wow Vanessa, you can “make” a jacket?! Jeez, make sure you send is a picture, I would love to be able to do that! x
I have a leather biker jacket. It makes me look like Michael Jackson circa his ‘Thriller’ period. Not good.
I have faux leather shorts. I love them so much and am definitely contemplating purchasing a real leather pair. I’m still waiting for my third wedding anniversary gift so that might have to be it.
P.S. Any tips on how to look less MJ in the above mentioned jacket would be totally welcomed.
Why is Thriller not good? sounds pretty cool to me…..
I also have faux leather shorts but don’t love them, they look a bit cheap tbh. Where were yours from? x
I’d love a pair of leather trousers but when did they go and get so flippin’ expensive?! I remember considering buying a pair a few years ago that were about £300 but deciding that was too much. I wish I had now as that seems ‘cheap’! Anyhow, I think I might have to treat myself to a leather skirt instead. I’ve got my eye on one I’ve spotted on the Comptoir des Cottoniers website. I think I might just have to take a deep breath and part with the cash and tell myself it’s an investment!
Emma, I don’t go on the Comptoir Des Cottoniers website as I would be bankrupt. I went to a store in Paris and wanted to buy EVERYTHING.
However, it will definitely be an investment. Do it. And if they do some fabulous trousers let me know. x
