Since the last In My Bag feature I’ve downsized somewhat and in the last couple of weeks I’ve added in a few new essentials to get me through the winter months. Here’s what I’m carrying around with me right now…
When the lovely people at Zatchels got in touch to ask if the Rock My Style team would like to trial a bag from their collection saying yes was easy, choosing which one to trial, not so much. In the end I plumped for a Classic Black Leather Saddle Bag. It’s the perfect popping-to-the-shops size, big enough for all my essentials and with a long enough strap that I can wear it across my body leaving my hands free for shopping.
I finally started reading I Am Malala – the story of Malala, the teenage education campaigner from Pakistan who was targeted by the Taliban and shot in the head as she was returning home from school – on my recent trip to Iceland (it had been on my must-read list for AGES). An information-packed read, Malala’s courageous story and her continuing work to empower girls through education are truly inspirational. If you haven’t already, I urge you to read the book. You can find out more about the Malala fund here.
The busier I get the more likely it is that I’ll shove my hair up in a messy bun to keep it out of my way so I’m never without a handful of hair bobbles like these Scunci Black Elastics from Boots.
I hate getting ill and at this time of year I boost my immune system with a daily dose of Emergen-C Super Orange a vitamin packed orange flavoured fizzy drink.
Nakd Berry Delight bars keep my energy levels high when I’m running between meetings, yoga classes and nights out.
Even during party season I’m pretty low-maintenance, a slick of lipstick and a couple of extra coats of masacara and I’m ready. Recently I got caught in a particularly heavy storm on the way to yoga. After class I went to the bathroom and there was more mascara under my eyes than on my lashes (why didn’t anyone say something?!). I immediately researched waterproof mascaras and liked the sound of Eyeko’s Sport Waterproof Mascara. I’m happy to report that so far it has stayed put through everything I’ve thrown at it, including a sweaty hot yoga class.
Killing time before meeting Charlotte in London earlier this month I found myself in the beauty section at & Other Stories (I have no idea how that happened either…!). I was very restrained and came away with just one tube of Hand Cream in Punk Bouquet. To be honest I would probably have bought the hand cream based on its oil paint tube style packaging, classy black on white design and the name of the fragrance. Luckily it smells delicious, a girly mash up of vanilla and rose and leaves my hands baby soft. If you’re looking for a stocking filler or a Secret Santa gift (it’s only £4!) you could do worse than picking up a tube too.
After the mascara incident I decided I need to carry a hand mirror with me at all times. I picked this cute one up from the Rachel Gale pop up shop on Broadway Market which is packed with lovely things featuring Rachel’s whimsical illustrations. If you can’t get to the shop (and I’m not sure how long it’s popping up for) her Etsy shop is here.
I’ve said it before but I’m never not without a notebook, especially at this time of year when I have to do lists for work, Christmas shopping, Christmas cards and well, everything else that needs to get done. Annoyingly the notebook in the picture (a Mara Hoffman one from Anthropologie) has sold out. Apologies. I’ve got my eye on this world map notebook to add to my collection next.

Am SO going to be buying that book!! if you have any other book recommendations Miranda I am all ears!
The queue of books on my kindle is getting more and more outrageous by the day…
I hope you love it as much as I did Emma! Other non-fiction books I’ve loved of late include The Rule of Inheritance by Claire Bidwell Smith, a memoir of a woman whose parents are diagnosed with cancer when she was a teenager. I also loved Wild, which I wrote about in the In My Bag post that I link to in the post above. I read them both after my mum died and although at times they were hard to read, ultimately they were comforting, cathartic and inspiring, therapy through reading if you like! They’re both great reads regardless. Fiction-wise I recently read Tigers In Red Weather by Liza Klaussmann on my sister’s recommendation and got through it in one sitting so good!
