I mentioned a couple of weeks ago how my summer capsule didn’t go to plan – too short, too small or generally poor quality. As the summer goes into wind down I join many other folks voicing Autumn clothing is by far my favourite.
In the last few weeks we’ve seen sweltering temperatures, tropical gusts and more rain than Manchester. Are you feeling you have nothing to wear? Well fear not for here’s a transitional fashion round-up with a few bits and pieces to invest in as we head into my best-loved season.
Layers
I have to confess I really look forward to buying my first jumper of the season and I love sporting a cosy knit sans jacket in September and October. Don’t feel you have to wear the traditional deeper shades of berry or burgundy, any shade goes. However with the weather still balmy it’s probably best to nab yourself a few thinner layers so you can bundle up when it gets colder. Zara’s very popular thin basic sweaters are great for wearing now but can also be layered under a jacket or jumper later on. Speaking of jackets, don’t forget to check out Lorna’s recent post on bombers and shackets which are perfect for this weather.
Ruffles and Statement Sleeves
On my brief peek around the online stores I saw lots of frills coming through and the lovely Lisa has a post coming up on this very soon. This beautiful ruffle sleeve jumper from Warehouse also capitalises on the statement sleeve trend too so you get a double whammy. Get you fashionista.
Leather Skirt
I’ve mentioned before about my love for the leather skirt. I’ve worn mine in summer with a loose shirt and cosy up in winter with thick knitwear. If you’re looking to invest in one our very own Lolly may have just purchased Jigsaw’s latest offering which is likely to last season after season.
Ballerina Flats
While it may be time to put the toes away for another year, there’s no need to don those heavy boots just yet. Jump (or rather pirouette) on to the ballerina trend and bag yourself a pair of ballet flats like these elegant Ankle Tie Pumps from Asos.
Velvet
Apparently we’re all going to be wearing velvet this year. At first I thought that meant rocking the velvet bootcut trousers I had from Tammy Girl back in the late nineties. Well no actually, it’s much more sophisticated this time. Look how elegant this Topshop Velvet Pleat Midi is. Coming very soon to online shopping baskets.
Thick Black Tights
Some of my more favourite summer pieces were a few skirts which I plan to carry on wearing when the weather gets chillier. A good pair of 100 denier opaques are what a girl needs to take her through. I actually quite like a primarni pair or a good old M&S bit of hosiery.
What are you buying to transition between the seasons? Anyone else have childhood or teenage memories of velvet?

A mustard yellow light yet cosy long cardi (silk and cashmere) to layer with and a gorgeous bottle green velvet sweatshirt are my fav new season purchases so far. I’m seriously tempted by a leather skirt, I had a suede one last winter which I wore tons but is sadly to big this year!
Love, love, love your purchases Rachel 🙂
Ooh I have been looking for a long yellow cardi, do you mind if I ask where it’s from Rachel? Lx
I used to have some stirrup pants which my friends used to call my ‘carpet trousers’ because they were a fetching orange/red/brown floral patterned velvet ?
Oh yes Lisa. Velvet ski pants were a thing to behold 😉
When I was a teenager I had a black velvet dress that I loved which had 3/4 sleeves and an A-line skirt. I wish I had one now. Who else had a floppy velvet hat in the 90s ??!
I so wanted a velvet hat Claire. All the cool kids had one!
I did I did. Though I was definitely not a cool kid!!
Just popped to M&S to raid the home offers and I have to say there were some rather lovely clothing items too. A nice black velvet pleated skirt with a bottle green jumper and a soft grey long cardy with velvet pockets. I may be making some purchases xx
Oooooh lovely xx
I have vague recollections of some purple velvet dungarees (with yellow, pink and blue confetti dots all over!!) in my childhood…
Goth teen years were all about the crushed velvet….tiered maxi skirts and dresses with swirly skirts
Zara is just a treasure cave right now… *warning*!!
