The latest item of clothing to join the list of things that I was highly suspicious of, but now I’m totally onboard with, and might even invest in if I wasn’t still operating a strict one-in-one-out policy with my wardrobe, is the cape. Yes, the cape. As in the outerwear garment of choice for superheroes (Batman, Superman) and super-villains (Darth Vader, witches) alike.
My cape conversion happened during one of my (far too) regular perusals of the Zara website. I was gathering together images for a Rock My Style fashion post when I was momentarily distracted by the cape above. Who wouldn’t be, quite frankly? It’s got a hood! And pockets! How cosy does it look?! Not to mention how swishy?!
Anyway, I got back to the task at hand, but I couldn’t stop thinking about the cape. I’ve never owned one but I love the idea of wearing one. The temptation to leave rooms by dramatically turning on my heel with my cape held up just below my eyes in the style of the Hooded Claw* would be immense. I am however very clumsy and would be more than likely to either take a whole load of glassware with me or get it trapped in a door on my way out. Less super-villain, more super-klutz.
Obviously the ultimate take on the cape is the Burberry blanket coat, monogrammed versions of which were worn by all the models in the Burberry AW14 show and have been spotted on Cara Delevingne, Olivia Palermo, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Suki Waterhouse and Sarah Jessica Parker amongst others IRL. I am aware that the blanket coat is not strictly speaking a cape (the clue being in its name, of course) but it’s definitely cape-esque in appearance. I would very much like one please Christopher Bailey, you can get in touch via the contacts form.
Anyway, the cape, I’m onboard, big time. Over to you. Would you wear one? Do you already own one? Do share in the comments section below.

You can buy the cape above here.
I love them I have three now, one from warehouse in soft grey shades, a Black and Tan one from linea and a stunning mulberry coloured moschino one which was a massive bargain from tkmax. They are just so useful to wear especially in our offices as the air con can get a bit nippy! They can look very sophisticated and best of all very snugly.
Your collection is giving me serious cape envy Stacey! Good point on keeping you warm in chilly offices, another reason to buy…
Oh I so want this cape. I love the length, but to me it is not a ‘full on’ cape. I had one of those when I was pregnant (one size fits all!). Then again, when pregnant I was also rather partial to my poncho. Hormones over style maybe?!
I know what you mean about it not being a full on cape Sara. I too have owned ponchos in the past. Oh dear, this is turning into a fashion confessional, my name is Miranda and I wear ponchos…
I have had a cape for years – I wheel it out every winter with skinny jeans and heels. It’s from Principles of all places – spotted it whilst trawling Outfit – and is black wool with a large collar and plain black buttons.
My only issue with it is that it can leave my hands a bit chilly!
This has made me want to dig my cape out now – especially as, at 21 weeks pregnant, I’m struggling to look stylish..
Ah yes, chilly hands, I didn’t think of that Jennifer…
Ooooh I do love a cape! It has been on my to purchase list since this time last year but I haven’t quite tracked down the right one. This Zara one looks very cosy, I may need to take a trip to the shops at the weekend! Any other suggestions of places to check out for a good cape?
Try Mango, Next, Zara and ASOS (they have LOADS right now) Lucy.
Miranda this is exactly why I love RMS I would never in a million years have considered a cape and now I want one!
Happy to have expanded your Autumn/Winter outerwear options Stacy!
[…] surprisingly given my love of capes and ponchos I’ve never really been a fan of fancy dress. However, chatting with my friend Alice over a glass […]
I have recently ventured into the wearing of a cape and get a lot of compliments on it – although I am 32 weeks pregnant and the cape is therefore quite flattering, perhaps people are subconsciously complementing me on looking less hippo like when drowned in said cape. Well anyway, regardless – it is comfy, flattering and quite sophisticated when your current wardrobe consists of mainly leggings and the hubby’s shirt. I feel I will be a fan of the cape now for many years. Mine is this one from Seraphine. Its maternity but could definitely be worn when not pregnant.

Very cool cape Georgina and brilliant budget-wise that you’re going to be able to wear post-pregancy too!
I know I’m a bit late to this post but people, I have spied this cape from my old faithful, my ‘i need a decent tee’ shop, my go-to-for-layering-pieces and now apparently my go to for capes!… H&M
