Ellie Goulding doesn’t like the term girl crush. She said so on her Twitter feed: “Don’t like the term girl crush at all. It’s rubbish. Just come out with it. ‘I would’ that’s way better. Because I definitely would.”
My not-a-girl-crush on Ellie Goulding crept up on me unexpectedly. Until recently I knew who she was and that she’d performed at Kate and Will’s wedding (surely the gig of the century) but beyond that I knew little and cared less.
However this summer something shifted. Suddenly Ellie seemed to be everywhere. Rocking out on stage at Glastonbury. Owning social media. On the cover of numerous magazines. I fell a little bit in love. Here’s why…
Her Instagram feed is all kinds of awesome, filled with pictures of her onstage, backstage, on holiday, hanging out with famous friends, doing yoga and those up-in-the-air cloud shots no one can resist taking when they’re on a plane. She’s just on a plane more often than most people.
She’s a brilliant healthy role model. She’s a nearly vegan vegetarian and with a strong but sexy, fit not thin body which she maintains with a tired-just-thinking-about-it regime that includes running, boxing, gymnastics, martial arts, Barry’s Bootcamp classes, the Insanity DVD and yoga. On yoga she says, “I get the biggest high when I do yoga. People don’t realise there’s such an incredible drug in life that doesn’t involve any substances.” And anyone that’s into yoga gets a thumbs up from me.
Happily though she’s not a fun-avoiding, crazy-strict green juice supping health bore and likes a drink as much as the next person saying, “I don’t want to send out the message that I’m extremely strict and don’t allow myself any vices, because it’s not true. I drink, but if I have a big night out then I pay for it by doing some gruelling exercise the next day. You can party to a certain degree, but you have to keep your body fit to be able to deal with it.”
Style-wise she totally nails that sportswear-meets-pared-back-nineties-style that has been my go to look since, well, the nineties. Her collection of sports bras surpasses mine (50 apparently). Who wouldn’t have a wardrobe full of crop tops and sports bras when you have abs like hers, quite frankly?
And aside from all that she writes ridiculously catchy songs. Try playing Starry Eyed and not singing along. See? Impossible. Dancing around your living room is also very likely when the chorus kicks. Or perhaps that’s just me…
So yeah, that’s why, in a nutshell, Ellie Goulding, I definitely would. Would you? Who do you have a not-a-girl-crush on? Do share!

Ellie Goulding, i would too. My husband has been a fan for quite some time and i brought him tickets to see her at 02 Arena in April this year. She was AMAZING. One of the best concerts i’ve ever been to. She is a great role model to young girls, she doesn’t strip of to sell music, she’s just brilliant. My other non girl crush would have to be P!nk…..
Yay, another Ellie fan! Very jealous that you’ve seen her live Kirsty! Agree, she’s a great role model, hopefully she’s inspiring girls to get into running and all the other sports she does. Yeah, I’ve always like P!nk too…
My original ‘not-a-girl crush’ has to be Gwen Stefani! Especially from the old No Doubt days. Seriously love that girl.
More recently it has to be a certain queen of the fringe who goes by the name of Zooey! (Deschanel) THAT fringe, her big eyes & AMAZING wardrobe! Plus the fact, the can act, sing, dance, write…..! I mean, who wouldn’t?! 😉
xxx
*she (can act….)
Ooops!
Another Gwen Stefani fan here Rebecca. And, yes, the multitalented Zooey is definitely not-a-girl-crush worthy! x
Olivia Colman. I love her as an actress – her performances are beautiful, honest, heart-breaking – blow me away every time. And she seems quite down to earth in interviews and her award acceptance speeches are just adorably humble. Can’t fault. Totally would lol.
I would Jennifer Lawrence! The fact that she looks amazing in her long brown plait and with short blonde hair! And I adore her loud, full of live laugh – it is just so catching!
Gwen Stefani and Drew Barrymore easily
