With a promised heatwave this weekend (hooray!) there’s no better time to get hold of a new dress for the summer season. If like me, you indulge in a bit of capsule wardrobe dressing then you’ll be a big fan of a frock as it’s a full outfit in just one item. If you don’t like to flash your pins then we’ve thrown in a few maxis too. Enjoy.

Sight Seeing

For those of us who favour a dress for nipping about the city and seeing the sights, then take a look at the Sandra dress from Boden. With a flattering fitted shape, removable straps and a knee length this dress has a very sweet retro design. I’m thinking fifties European chic breezing about the streets of Rome with a dashing young man on a scooter.

Festival Chic

Seventies inspired fashion is bigger than ever this year and the gorgeous Summer of Love collection from Topshop doesn’t disappoint. Amongst the fringed suede, Victoriana maxis and pretty printed jumpsuits you’ll find this lacy swing dress. The bare shoulders and tie details are a perfect nod to the Woodstock era but if you’d prefer a more practical colour way for your festival frolics then there’s a similar striped version too.

Summer Nights

I adore the on-trend blue print on this Oversized Shift Dress from Missguided. I’m imagining sipping cocktails at sunset in this ensemble perhaps dressed down with some flat sandals.

Cloudy Mornings

As we all know the summer months can be unpredictable so sometimes you need a longer sleeve to cover-up.
The M&S Shirt Dress is a perfect partner to a cooler day and could even team with some skinnies if it was feeling particularly chilly. If the sun does shine then this palm print dress is particularly versatile and would work well over a bikini with a straw hat. I like a frock that multi-tasks.

Event

If you’ve been invited to a posh event this summer then you’ll be the belle of the ball in this floor length pleated number from Goddiva. The Lupita style frock comes in a variety of colours but I have a soft spot for the zingy lime which would look gorgeous with a tan.

Beach Casual

A pom-pom trim gets me every single time. This adorable drawstring sundress from Boohoo would be great layered over a bikini or perhaps with a casual denim jacket for a bit of boho glam.

Wedding

I’ve just been to my one and only nuptials of the year but I appreciate the wedding season is in full swing. I wore this pearl encrusted bold pink dress from Monsoon with metallic heels for the occasion and think I’ll whip out the same frock for my Mum’s retirement party later in the summer. I was considering wearing the same attire for a christening this weekend but as it’s a similar crowd I decided against it. Do let me know if you’ve seen anything you think would be suitable for church on Sunday. I find christenings notoriously difficult to dress for.

Barbecue

I love to don a maxi in summer and feel this tile print long dress from New Look would end up being a summer staple. If ethnic style prints are your kind of thing then be sure to check out the rest of their New Look festival collection. So many things for your summer wish list!
