Until a couple of years ago I was always more likely to wear a skirt than shorts come summer. I’m not sure exactly what happened but these days my summer wardrobe is all about shorts and I only have one summer skirt. It’s a good job you can wear shorts pretty much anywhere these days. Reader Emma requested a post on shorts-that-are-not-denim. So here you go Emma, eight pairs of shorts to cover everything you’ll do this summer and, as per your request it’s a denim-free zone.
{Work} Jacquard High Waist Shorts, £25.99, Zara
Whether or not you can or will wear shorts to the office will depend on your work’s dress code and your personal preference but, worn with a simple white top and long sleeveless jacket, these black and white check shorts with side pockets are about as smart as shorts come.

{Date} Longline Culotte, £42, ASOS
Are they a long short? Or a short trouser? For the purpose of this post I’m going long short. These just-below-knee-length smart culottes are totally going out appropriate when you add a denim shirt, biker jacket and high-as-you-dare heels.

{Holiday} Somedays Lovin Floral Shorts, £35, ASOS
These pretty, flippy floral print shorts are the perfect holiday multi-taskers. Wear them with a plain bikini on the beach, with a simple vest or tee for sightseeing, or with a white blouse, as shown, at the bar.

{Run} Running Shorts, £12.99, H&M
I’ve bought a couple of pieces from H&M’s sportswear line recently and, several classes and washes in, they’re doing good. These running shorts are made from fast-drying, breathable fabric, which is just what you need in summer and the short tights layer means there’s no chance of you accidentally showing the world your knickers.

{Wedding} Printed Culottes, £29.99, Zara
Again, whether or not you could/would wear these to a wedding very much depends on the wedding and your personal style. Worn with a pretty white top, white blazer and sandals at the very least you could wear them to most smart summer parties.

{Sleep} Shorts Set, £22, Next
This delicate floral print sleep set is so pretty I can totally see myself staying in it all day, not that I would of course, ahem, cough…

{Weekend} Linen Shorts, £28, Warehouse
Whether your weekend involves shopping, playing with the kids, a picnic in the park, a spot of gardening, catching rays in a pub garden or all of the aforementioned, these shorts, worn with a stripy tee, would be totally welcome.

{Yoga} Short Yoga Tights, £7.99, H&M
Long enough not to ride up during a flowing vinyasa class, short enough for a hot yoga class, these will be the hardest working shorts in your yoga-bunny workout kit.

Where do you stand on the shorts v skirts debate? Spotted or bought any great shorts recently? Do share below!
I love the printed culottes from Zara! I’ve got a wedding in June and I’m struggling to find anything I like, so might pop to Zara and see how these look on me.
I find shorts way more practical but always struggle to find them in a long enough length but that also fit around the waist.
I know what you mean Jo, the fit is often tricky with shorts. I hope the Zara shorts work out!
I adore those sleep shorts from Next – currently looking for a summer pyjama set and these look just the ticket. Plus I love the fact that you’ve included shorts as workwear as they always look so chic in my opinion.
Love the sleep shorts too, Next’s sleepwear is so good! Think shorts can look smarter than a skirt for work, depending on the shorts, of course!
I’m living for those Zara culottes! I can already think of a million uses, but mainly visualising my summer holiday pulling up to the harbour in Monte Carlo and stepping off the yacht into the glorious sunshine. These would be perfect for that… right? x
Karen are you off to Monte Carlo?! You lucky girl!
Basing ourselves in Nice but will be heading over for a day of window shopping with the mega-rich! It’s the most ridiculous place on earth, I love it. Obviously planning my outfits in advance so I dont look poor x
I’m so blinking jealous! Have a cocktail on a yacht for me!
Ooh, will be fab, you’ll have the best time! x
There will be plenty of cocktails ladies! Having missed out on a decent holiday last year because of the house, I am counting down the days til I’m back in the Cote D’Azur xx
(I will spend every moment between now and then planning outfits)
Good girl!
Oh my goodness yes Karen, you have to have the culottes! x
I am TOTES down the with whole culottes thing that is happening right now. I can foresee a pair going in my summer capsule wardrobe for work and play, actual shorts are a no in my office without tights 🙁
Oh Claire what a blinking shame! Before I joined Rock My Ltd I worked in the corporate sector but was lucky enough to be able to wear shorts…albeit with a nice blouse and some super smart pointy flats. Culottes are the best compromise though!
Me too Claire, it took me a while, but so into now. What a shame you can’t wear shorts to the office, you could get away with culottes though, right?
yeah its weird becasue i work for a charity and the dress code ranges from suits etc to pretty casual but shorts just don’t seem to have taken a hold. Maybe its the fact that I’m based in the fashion hinterland that is Banbury 🙂
the culottes are definitely in though
