Things are progressing with the capsule wardrobe. Thanks for all the smashing suggestions on the black trousers. I have written a list of the recommended pairs and am stalking the retailers for any pre-christmas discounts.
I had originally planned to write this post about some of my new purchases for weekend wear however I haven’t really had much success so far with items and have sent back most of my online purchases. I don’t think my debit card knows what’s going on. Instead I thought we could talk shoes, more specifically those for the late autumn/winter period. Here are the styles I’m planning on adding to my capsule wardrobe.
Chelsea Boots
Depending on where I shop I’m a size four or five in shoes. I was after a timeless style to wear with skirts and dresses for the office but being in-between sizes I really struggle with court shoes as I cannot seem to find any that don’t ‘slob off’ my heels. Topshop came to the rescue with their basic black suede Chelsea boot. The low heel makes them great for the day and I think I’ll wear them for weekends as well as work.
Over-the-Knee Riding Boots
I bought my tall boots from Jones a couple of years ago in the January sale. I mostly wear them over black or denim skinny jeans, though I have also been known to wear them with dresses too. This style comes slightly past my knee (though not in a super sexy Stuart Weitzman kind of way), they are really comfortable and fit like a glove. There are loads of similar styles around at the moment. Dune have a particularly good selection.
Impractical Fancy Boots
Actually these aren’t that impractical. I bought these leopard print boots on a bit of a whim in the sales three years ago to wear on New Years Eve. I was quite shocked to find something quite so daring in M&S, but also delighted as I could get a size 4 and a half and also benefit from their fancy insolia technology. Basically there’s a very squishy cushion sole underfoot to stop you feeling like you’re going to teeter over. I like to wear these shoe-boots to turn a day outfit into an evening one if I’m pushed for time.
The Mid Heel Height Ankle Boot
Billed by Ash Footwear as a ‘go everywhere, wear anytime’ ankle boot, my new Jalouse Woodash boots are my favourites. The greyish, brown suede goes with anything and everything and I’ve been wearing with jeans and dresses. I must find some form of suede protector though to keep them looking pristine. I had read to size-down in these shoes so was delighted to find the very last pair of size fours on the Cloggs website for a reduced price. They fit perfectly once I have them on but I have to admit it’s a bit of struggle getting that far. I have to work quite hard to get my foot in!
Dancing Shoes
I am on the hunt for a new pair of heels for my friend’s upcoming wedding. After lots of approving comments on the navy blue jumpsuit I placed my order but unfortunately had to send it back. It turns out you have to be fairly busty to carry off said romper. I have ordered a plainish blue dress edged in black lace so I’m hoping to be able to find some dark heels to complement. In the meantime I’m allowing my trusty LK Bennett metallic heels into the capsule wardrobe. They’re now four years old and need replacing after they have seen a lot of dance floor action. Please feel free to make any suggestions for suitable replacements!
Flats
During autumn and spring I am often seen sporting a pair of pointy flats. If my feet need a rest from heels or time off from being bundled in boots then I pair my flats with a fishnet style pop-sock in winter. These red ones were from Zara many moons ago and help to add some pizazz to a dark outfit.
I haven’t featured my trusty Hunters as I couldn’t work out if wellies would be classed as part of the capsule wardrobe? I wear them mostly for long walks, gardening and obviously if there’s any snowfall. Also as workout wear shouldn’t sneak into the collection, my trainers are also staying out of the line-up.
Am I missing anything? What’s your essential footwear for the winter season? Any boots on your Christmas list? Please share any suggestions for party shoes too!
After missing out on those River Island boots that Fern mentioned on her post the other day I am still hunting for some mid heel black ankle boots… thinking the Ash ones if they do them in another colour might be good but are they very “baggy” round the ankle?!
Party shoes – always Russell & Bromley 🙂
They are definitely not tight Victoria and there is a rather large gap. I wouldn’t say they were baggy though 😉
Mmmm, I might pop into our local Cloggs and try on. I find ankle boots always too gapey round the ankle.
Meant to say, I second your chelsea boots choice – I bought a gorgeous grey pair from Jack Wills which are sooo comfy and can be smart too.
Everyone should have Impractical Fancy Boots in their wardrobe. Fact. I love these leopard print ones Lauren! M&S can be very unexpected sometimes. I bought some very Impractical Hot Pink Shoes for a hen party last weekend, and I’ve fallen a bit in love with them even though they do bring out my inner TOWIE. Think they’re going to get another outing this weekend (much to my bf’s disapproval). x
I think I know the ones you mean Sian. They are fabulous! He will learn to love them 😉 x
I love M&S shoes!! they are sneakily very cool behind that mumsy facade!!
I have to admit to owning several pairs Claire. The half size clinches the deal for me!
Clarks are the same, half sizes and some secretly cool shoes, have you seen the Orla Keily ones? I’m crushing hard on these http://www.clarks.co.uk/p/26104654
I got a pair of silver ballerina pumps from M&S as a slight panic buy. They are now one of the most useful pair of shoes in my wardrobe. As I’m on the lookout for more ankle boots after my favourite pair from M&S bit the dust I’m off to look there now.
Hope you find what you’re looking for Sarah.
Perfect timing I am still on the hunt for the perfect pair of perfect shoes!
I too have a pair of m&s heeled boots and they are fab! Never underestimate m&s.
I am however looking for flats as I now have to do lots of walking for my job and am on my feet a lot. So of all the brands which have the best comfort factor? Which are worth the money and beat for my wee feet?
Oooh Stef, I’m not too sure. I am always amazed by how many people have some really lush shoes from Clarks! Have you looked there? x
I recently discovered Hotter shoes and they are marketed as comfortable so you could try there. They also have a £10 off offer on at the moment with free UK delivery.
I love a good discount voucher Sarah.
I have the Ash boots in a tan colour and they are fab! Perfect heel height and so comfortable. I agree, they are definitely loose around the top but definitely not baggy. I think I’d like another pair in black/grey to wear with black jeans…. Love the gold shoes too, btw!
Love the tan version Emma.
The gold shoes were my excruciatingly painful wedding shoes. They are very pretty though and go with a lot of outfits x
I have the Ash boots in the same colour Lauren and have a struggle with getting them on too, it takes quite a bit of effort but once on they fit perfectly and they are so beautiful they are worth the effort! I’m hoping after some more wear they will be easier to get on, definitely not the pair to grab in you’re in a rush!
I’m glad I’m not the only one Anna! I actually have bruises on my feet from the first try. I love them when they’re on. Definitely worth it! x
I notice the Ash Jess boots are similar to the Jalouse but have a side zip. Might be worth it if you have high arches! I love lots of the Clarks Originals shoes, but I recently bought this lovely pair and they kill my feet! Honestly, pain and blood http://www.clarks.co.uk/p/20358006
Having said that, they have 20% off at the mo….I may be tempted again by a different style…
Pain and blood? No shoe is worth bleeding for. Well some maybe…..
Ahh those Stuart Weitzman boots! I *need* them in my life 😉 xx
Ha ha Sam, I felt they needed a mention after Saturday! Hope you’re well x
Hey, I loved the Ash boot so went online for a nosey & ended up buying these:

Can’t wait until they arrive now & what a bargain:-)
What a saving Jean. They will go with so many things too. x
Ah, shoes. I’m moving house soon and so started packing up my shoes last weekend. I kept thinking I had located them all, and then kept finding more! I had 11 pairs just in my porch. My trouble is, I’m drawn to interesting colours and so am still missing quite a lot of the basics, like a pair of smart, black, comfortable work shoes for when having to spend a lot of time on my feet or do a lot of walking. I, too, struggle to keep a shoe on unless it has a strap of some sort, which makes shoe-shopping harder. I’m taking all my shoes with me when we move but will give careful thought when I unpack as to whether they’re all for keeping (I couldn’t possibly rush into such an important decision now!).
PS Try Dune for party shoes. I have a lovely pair of sparkly silver ones from there from a couple of years ago 🙂
There’s nothing like a house move to help you streamline Laura. Hope the packing is going well x
Btw, I’ve just seen that there is currently 30% off Ash boots (and lots of other things) on the My Wardrobe website. X
Oooh thanks Emma x
