The lovely Karen was one of the Rock My Wedding 2012/3 Real Brides and her combination of huge heart and wedding flair made her a hit with the whole RMW gang and readers alike.
Last week Karen and her husband Lee finally completed their purchase on a three-bed 1930’s pad in Liverpool. Over the next few months they will be making their new home their own and the first room under the spotlight will be the kitchen.
As with our usual Reader Request format, I’ll stick my oar in and put forward a few suggestions but I hope you’ll add in a few ideas too. As an added extra I was thinking we could try out a team Pinterest board too. More on that later, but first over to Karen.
{Karen’s Request}
It’s ridiculous but after spending 8 years in a two-up two-down, the one piece of furniture I aspire to own is a kitchen table!! I’m easily pleased! We do have room for a little one, which makes me very happy.
The kitchen is new, but not to our taste. As it’s new, it’d be daft to replace it right away, so we’re thinking of Annie Sloaning the cupboards (although they’re laminate I think it’d take), replacing the worktops and getting a new floor. There’s also space for a small dining table – it has really great potential to be the heart of the house and I’d love the décor to reflect that. Generally, we like natural colours – greys, stones, creams. Often with a little pop of candy or pastel tones.
Summing up what I like style-wise in a kitchen, I’d probably say ‘modern country’. So, lots of clean lines and bright, functional space, but keeping that homely natural feeling too.Other than that, I’d love a range cooker. but to get it in, would mean ripping out two cupboards, so we’re currently weighing up whether to do that (we probably will, but i’m worried about losing storage and what to replace the bottom corner unit with/how to replace it).
If you have any magic décor tips or styling advice to share that would be ace.
Modern Country Style
I suppose the best way to describe the ‘modern country’ look is a contemporary take on the traditional country style. This lends itself very well to a muted heritage palette but also allows for a hint of pastel and retro pattern to sneak in too.
Karen’s space has great proportions and will most definitely be the heart of the home. My own kitchen is dark so I’m hugely envious of the dual aspect windows letting lots of light in.
In my old house I acquired a dirty cream melamine kitchen so I painted all the doors with specialist cupboard paint and was thrilled with the makeover.
Many an RMS reader would also suggest using Annie Sloan paint too and it’s definitely a route to go down if you’re after more of a diverse palette. As Karen and Lee are fans of the natural shades, I’m tempted to suggest a colour such as ‘old white’ to keep the space light but not stark. Karen’s units are laminate to I know she’d be keen to hear about your experiences on painting a non-wooden surface.
Karen has a penchant for copper, so for a colour scheme I reckon off-white for the base, then accents of duck egg blue (for the pastel kick) and then a rich and sexy darker shade to offset some copper hints. Wouldn’t a couple of long copper light fittings (such as the Thor ones from Cox and Cox) look ace over the half island?
I like the mismatched approach of the main image in the mood board above so perhaps the unit and shelves around the fridge could be painted in a darker shade of grey or blue such as Annie Sloan’s Paris Grey.
One the other hand I also saw a really warm palette recently demonstrated in a copy of Ideal Home recently composed of dusky pink, pale grey and copper. I think a similar combination could work well in Karen’s kitchen too if the idea of dark blue doesn’t float your boat.
While we’re talking about paint I’d also suggest adding a few coats to the table or chair legs and also painting the interior of the window frames for a quintessential modern country look. Karen doesn’t necessarily have room for the rather large John Lewis table shown in the mood board above but there’s no reason not to steal the style.
Worktops & Flooring
I appreciate a good marble top (I’m also still a lover of concrete worktops too but they are proving to be a right pain in the bum round at my house) so I’d say for a modern country style it has to be a wooden counter top.
From a flooring perspective, slate or stone is also perfect for a more contemporary take on farmhouse style but can be cold on the tooties. An engineered wood floor (to withstand the sweeping and mopping) could work well in either a traditional wood finish or a lighter, limed finish.
Final elements
A deep butlers sink, simple tiling and open shelves stacked with crockery are all components of the modern country style, as are pots of herbs and a collection of rustic chopping boards.
Now it’s your turn! Any ideas you can share with Karen on how to decorate the space? How would you deal with the stove scenario? Any great suppliers you’d like to share for elements to get the new look? I’ve set up a Modern Country Pinterest board. If you fancy adding a few pins yourself then please drop me a link to your pinterest profile and I’ll ping along an invite. (You need to follow the board first for the invite to come through). Hopefully we can share a whole heap of collaborative ideas with the new homeowners.
I have two suggestions…
1) Whatever you do, do NOT have natural wood worktops – nightmare! I have some which we Osmo limed which look amazing but you get through a tonne of kitchen roll mopping every 3 seconds and a drop of red wine is a killer as is a glass left for half a day with the slightest soggy bottom.
2) Autentico paints are essentially the same as Annie Sloan, same price but a much wider range of colours & finishes so I’d suggest take a look at theirs. They also do an exterior paint which I gather they are rebranding for kitchens/bathrooms as although a chalky finish repels moisture well.
Good point Victoria – I didn’t think about the natural wood problems. The one in my kitchen wasn’t in a great state when we bought the house so it’s very ‘rustic’ shall we say.
Must try Autentico paints x
Thanks Victoria – Autentico sound like a great shout, it’d be really interesting to see how the exterior paint would work out. My main worry is that I have a tendency to slam door and drop things a lot so I really want something that will take a bashing!
very good point about the natural wood – we’ll be on a little bit of a budget so I might shop around for something that gives the effect without looking too laminatey xx
Shame because I was coveting real wood tops, there are some really good lookalikes though xx
I’d second Victoria’s comment. The amazing country kitchen (complete with Aga, I die!) was the reason we bought our cottage but 9 months in the oak worktops are a nightmare to maintain and we’ve caused so many stains by leaving the odd pan out or putting a glass down. They do look amazing but they really aren’t very practical at all, unfortunately.
The other thing we did which made a huge difference to the overall ‘country kitchen’ vibe was invest in a retro cream fridge.. we wanted a Guranje (basically identical to a Smeg but half the price tag) but because they were used on Great British Bake Off they were out of stock for practically forever and one day I broke down because it was week 4 living out of a mini bar and just cancelled my order and bought a Smeg. I’ve never regretted it and I give it a quick cuddle daily – it’s really changed the look and feel of the space. Love the copper fixtures Lauren has spied, they would look amazing. Good luck with the decorating, hope we’ll get to see some after pics! x
I love that you cuddle your fridge Lynne. I’m off to give mine a hug now….
Now I REALLY want a Smeg to cuddle! Will definitely share the ‘after’ pics, I cant wait to get stuck in xx
Agreed about the wooden worktops. We took ours out, with the exception of an old butchers block, which looks all the better for it’s ‘lived in’ look. And a fellow Smeg hugger. Me too! I have mentioned it on these pages before. Bought when I was single and almost penniless about 15 years ago. (Shall I buy a sofa or a Smeg? Smeg won!). I used to drape myself over one corner of it whilst waiting for the microwave to ‘ping’. I know, the glamour!
oh Victoria really? I’d LOVE a natural wood worktop as I cant stand laminate :S
Clare in my old pad I had a mock effect wood worktop. It sounds awful but actually looked fab and most people thought it was real. Sadly it was from the now-defunct Focus but there must be some similar ones around x
Yeah its really annoying as they look so nice but even with a protective Osmo over the top its a real pain. You can of course just sand down the dodgy bits but in my house I wouldn’t be left with much of a worktop!!
Lauren you’re a complete angel – thank you for your lovely words and your advice so far.
Thanks everyone too for your comments and suggestions!
Weirdly, we’ve got our eye on the Thor light fittings for the dining room so we’re definitely on the same page. I’d never even considered them over the breakfast bar. Mismatched colours would also look great I think – Lauren, you mention that fridge cupboard and I was delighted when we arrived that our fridge is too big so that’s gone, you should see how it’s really opened the room up! xx
we have a cream gorenji – it is such a sexy fridge/freezer! We’re in love!
There’s something about these lovely fridges that makes me feel like eating a Knickerbocker Glory. Is it just me?!
I needed a big fridge and ummed and ahhed about a retro Smeg as they don’t actually have oodles of space so in the end went for a brushed stainless steel Smeg square number (for half the price) and I can fit soo much in. If space wasnt an issue I’d have bitten the bullet & gone for it coz they are so cute. However, I have a grey gloss kitchen and it works really well so I think you can make not white “white goods” work! Now a copper fridge… that would be fun!
While watching grease???
Annie Sloan will cover everything! I painted over a horrible marble fireplace in my lounge with it so pretty sure it will cover your cupboards! Loving this style Lauren, probably sort of what I was aiming for in my kitchen but now need those copper lights! Delonghi had a gorgeous copper kettle a while back that I was sure I needed but they also do a pretty duck egg blue one. I’ve got an old pine table which I painted the legs on, although want to redo them a nice grey now, and then teamed it with funky chairs which we got from Blue Sun Tree. Great place to get copycat styles at a much lower price. I am also coveting the lovely jelly wallpaper from Thornback and Peel but can’t quite figure out which wall it would actually work on. I shall keep planning. In regards to the range, do it! I moved a door and window just so I could fit my giant ringmaster in and haven’t looked back. Although you can get cute little 90cm ranges that take less space so that could be worth a look. Good luck with the renovation x
Very much liking the sound of the Delonghi kettle Charlotte.
Thanks for recommending Blue Sun Tree. I now want one of every chair 😉 x
Ha ha, sorry Lauren! They are great quality though from there which is good and means I keep wanting to change ours for different designs! x
Ooh they have those funky industrial bar stools too…
I always think Made looks quite good for chairs / stools and bits of furniture for a modern look. I’ve never bought from them but there are always discount offers in the Times etc.
Oh Charlotte – I think i’m going to spend all night on Blue Sun Tree!
We’ve bitten the bullet and ordered a range cooker… we’ve gone for the 900 on the assumption that we’ll just figure out the cupboard space afterwards 🙂 xx
We had a range cooker in our old house and absolutley loved it but we moved to a house which has a a sepaerate oven and hob, the hob is on the worksurface and the oven is high level in a cupboard (if that makes sense!). Both me and my husband were convinced we would want to get rid and go back to a range but its fantastic and means you can check on the oven without bending (lazy I know) and you can access the oven/grill easily whilst using the hob!
We got a lovely kitchen table from Ikea (£100 with 4 chairs) which you could easily paint/peronalise.
I also put new door knobs on as the old oneswere a bit ‘twiddly’/manky!
new knobs… defo!! x
(and I LOVE the thought of eye-level cake in the oven!)
The oven was a revelation especially for spying on cakes and yorkshires! the hob is a 5 ring one so feels like a range.
The knobs completely changed our kitchen, the cupboards were all painted cream and we haven’t chnaged them but I’d like to change the colour (other than scrubbing them!). I’d love to refit teh kitchen but after getting married last Nov and having to completly rewire the house we just can’t afford it. We are slowly redecoarting all the other rooms and ignoring the plaster patches from the rewiring!
I relined the shelves in all the cupbaords with sticky back plastic from Wilkos as they were as minging as the weird knobs and purple nets on the curtains!
We also have bronze painted cornicing in the hall and dining room!
This is so exciting Karen, congrats on the new house!
I DREAM about Plain English kitchens and would love something modern country more than anything. Our tiny Ikea kitchen remains until that lottery win materialises.
In the real world, if you’re after a Smeg a friend of mine got hers from a place in Cheshire and it was a bargain-it has a tiny scratch on the side (barely visible) and she got about £700 off. I’ll see if I can’t find the name of the company (she’s currently somewhere in rural China so can’t ask her currently!).
Thanks Faye, the kitchen was a big factor in choosing this house – it’s not huge but it’s a really great size.
Your friend needs to come home immediately and take me to this Cheshire treasure trove! Sounds amazing. xx
We painted our melamine cupboards with Annie Sloan ‘old white’ and they turned out great! It was so easy, done in a day. We took all the doors off, cleaned them with sugar soap then just did 2 coats of Annie Sloan. I would recommend coating them with the Lacquer rather than Soft Wax as it just gives a harder wearing more wipeable surface for a kitchen. Good luck! x
Sarah that’s great to know! It’s tips like this that are absolutely ideal. Luckily I work about two minutes from an AS stockist and I’m so tempted to drop in on my lunch break tomorrow. Must remember lacquer not wax… excellent tip!! xx
This is all so exciting, Karen!
Living in rented accommodation I dream of the day I can finally let my pinterest boards come to life.
I can’t wait to see the finished results!
xx
You will, and it’ll be amazing! x
Charles! There’s an Annie Sloan workshop opening at our venue this month. I’ll find out more for you if you’re interested?
Ooh ta Debs… they have one at Brimstage next to Clatters so I’m going to pop in. It might be a nice day out for us though! x
Thank you once again everyone – some really great new shopping obsessions for me and really useful practical tips. I’m going to go ahead with a little more confidence than before.
Thanks to everyone following the Pinterest board too – please start pinning your ideas, it’d be fabulous to see.
Too excited to start transforming the kitchen now xx
I bought my kitchen table from here http://www.ofspecialinterest.co.uk/index.html they are bespoke so made to exact size and paint finish you want and they do smaller ones in 3 feet sizes. The tables are amazing – we went for a 7 footer! The shop’s whole stock is ‘modern country kitchen’ I love it!
We had real wood workshops and put Danish oil on them once a year to seal them. It made them much more stain resistant.
We now have black granite in our new kitchen and I’m finding it a complete nightmare to keep clean. It always looks really streaky 🙁 Does anyone have any miracle cleaning solutions?????
TAR DAR http://www.lakeland.co.uk/22553/Daily-Granite-Cleaner
Oohh I have a great cleaner for my black granite worktop… It’s called work top wonder from Lakeland. It’s not cheap but I clean with normal kitchen cleaner first then just use thus after as a polish so it’s shiny!! Hope this helps!
Absolutely LOVE this style kitchen & I’m with Karen on always wanting a kitchen table (or the dream an island!) …. One day! Can’t wait to see the transformation! x
Oh Gill the absolute joy of an island! What happened to us eh? Times change xx
Hi Karen,
If you are a bit short on space but want a cooker that looks more like a stove then one I considered was this one:
http://www.stoves.co.uk/products/cooking/freestanding-cookers/richmond-mini-range-550dfw/444442895/
I was absolutely in love with the red version but budget when we re-did our kitchen meant that I had to settle for a less expensive one : (
Happy decorating!

Hi, I’ve recently had a new kitchen in the style on your mood board, (I’ve waited twenty years for my dream kitchen!) it’s a decent size, also has three tall larder units and a full height wide unit with pan drawers at the base and concertina doors with shelving behind above the drawers, I got the lot for just over three grand! They are very solid, with solid backs and bespoke sizes, so didn’t have to have filler sections put in. They come primed and my husband painted them in Farrow and Ball Elephants’s Breath. So when you want to renew yours, check out CJF Trading in Birmingham, I know he has made them for people in London, so I’m sure Liverpool wouldn’t be a problem.
Annie sloan does work on laminate cupboards I painted my own. Bit of advice after painting mine for the second time. If you have smooth doors with no in frame i.e. shaker style door. Put the paint on using a mini roller. I was also recommended to use the lacquer (which is normally for floors ) instead of the wax to seal it – again use a roller and it worked a charm! 2 coats of paint 2 coats of lacquer some new handles from Ikea and you have a new kitchen 🙂
