Even this casual-to-the-core Sagittarian likes to smarten herself up now and again. Recent perusals of my favourite online shopping sites have led me to the conclusion that there is a wide-legged-trouser-shaped hole in my wardrobe for occasions when jeans just won’t do and a dress feels, well, too dressy. Here’s five of the contenders to plug the gap…
High Waist Trousers, £69.99, Zara
It’s crept up on me slowly but this season Zara has replaced Topshop as my first port of call when I’m looking for an outfit for, well, pretty much any occasion. I should probably start having half my salary transferred to Zara every month, it would save time queuing up at the till. These trousers are perfect, they’ve got pockets, are high of waist for a leg-lengthening effect (very important for those of us not blessed with Gisele-like proportions) and are just the right shade of grey.

Wide Suit Trousers, £34.99, H&M
I’m a big fan of these slouchy suit trousers, from the wide waistband to the huge turn-ups, although I fear these would work better on someone with longer legs than mine. At half the price of the Zara ones they’re a good option if you’re not completely committed to this look.

Wool Blend Crop Trousers, £55, & Other Stories
These aren’t really very wide at all. In fact I would say they’re kind of an entry level trouser somewhere between skinny and wide. They’re the ones to go for if you’ve been wearing skinny jeans and trousers for as long as you can remember. The first step on your way to embracing the wider leg.

Wide Leg Trousers, £45, Warehouse
These are the most classic of the five styles I’ve picked but you could give them an edge by throwing on a leather jacket instead of the knitted waistcoat and adding simple black Nikes instead of the court shoes.

Palazzo Wool Blend Trousers, £59.99, Mango Premium
I love this entire outfit. Also the model’s, “Yeah? Whatever.” attitude. Apparently the trousers are navy, although they look a kind of blue grey in the image. I haven’t seen them in the flesh yet as, sadly, there isn’t a Mango in Westfield Stratford and I haven’t been into town for a while. To be honest it’s probably a good thing there isn’t a Mango there, what with my Zara habit…

Anyone else loving the wide trouser look? Seen any other styles I should add to my list of possibilities? Any downsides to the look? I’m thinking soggy hems on a rainy day because the style looks best just grazing the floor. Do share below!
Ooo, I love a good wide-leg trouser. I really struggle to get them because I’m tall, I know I’m lucky to have long legs but it doesn’t feel like it when i’m shopping 🙂 Love the H&M ones, would they work as crops, do you think?
Anyway, New Look have some good ones sometimes (and are super-cheap), Next are okay, and Long Tall Sally are good (mainly for smarter trousers, though there are some diamond-print palazzo trousers that I LOVE. Are they too wide? Can your trousers BE too wide??!)
Does anyone else know anywhere for long trousers? xx
Ann-Marie the H&M would definitely work as a crop – tres chic!
I have the opposite problem and my trousers always drag on the floor (!) I do know River Island do a long leg actually – I remember seeing them when I was after the extra short 🙂 x
I don’t think trousers can be too wide Ann-Marie, no! Will ask my longer legged friends where they shop for trousers and report back. x
Have you tried Great Plains? They aren’t cheap but they are long.
The H&M ones are lovely! I always struggle with a trouser length. I’m 5’6 and a bit- which isnt very tall but must be in odd proportions because normal trousers are always too short. Topshops tall range are good and my newer trick is to find things on asos because when you watch the videos you can see how the clothes hang and normally it tells you how tall the model is. If she is 5’10 and they look long enough for her then I know I can get them.
Great tip Amanda! I often buy trousers that would be cropped on taller people, but are the perfect length on me (5’4″).
Hey Miranda, I’m the same height but have real problems finding wide trousers that don’t make me look super-short and/or make my hips look really wide! Put it this way, last time I tried on wide leg trousers my boyfriend dissolved onto a fit of hysterics gasping “oh my god, no!” Sooo… any tips?! I thought maybe ones that are more fitted around the thigh then widen, but then I’m veering into 70’s flares territory.
My favourite pair of wide trousers were slim at the waist and fitted over the hips with straight wide legs Anna (they were from Benetton). I always have mine altered so that they graze the ground for a leg lengthening look but that does mean you have to decide whether you’re going to wear them with flats or heels or they’ll either drag on the ground, or a flap around your ankles. Neither of which is a good look!
Seriously tempted by those trousers from Mango, especially with free delivery and returns.
The Mango ones look great – plan to pop into town for a trying on sesh when I’m back in London!
