I’ve noticed that in the comments section of some beauty posts we often begin discussing prettifying bits and pieces from alternative brands that are not necessarily included in the feature. I love this about Rock My Style – the diversity means everyone gets to read about “real” recommendations and tried and tested products that actually work.
I thought I’d try out a new kind of make-up post this week, it’s where I pick out my favourite items from a well known brand and you folks can all tell me yours. Yes this may be a tad ahem selfish (is it obvious I’d really like to try some new stuff from my favourite cosmetics houses?!) but I hope between us we’ll be able to highlight and review some perhaps more long-standing “obvious” raves as well as some hidden gems.
Ever since I was 16 I’ve had a soft spot for MAC. My Mum went on a shopping trip to London (such a far away glamorous destination to a teenage girl from Warwickshire) and treated me to a lipstick in “Twig” an eyeshadow in “Brule” and a Studio Fix compact powder. I don’t use any of these products now but I was immediately wowed by the high level of pigment, smooth application and longevity of wear.
Ever since then I find it difficult to avoid purchasing at least one piece from every limited edition line (some which I fall in love with and immediately buy “back ups”) as the advertising campaigns and new product launches are just so damn clever. And unique. I have no clue how or who comes up with the concepts continually but they are genius.
Lipstick in Sunny Seoul £15.50
You would have heard me sing the praises of the shade “Flamingo” in my summer must-haves feature and I do have several other pretty shades that I wear from time to time, Sunny Seoul however is fast becoming my “go to” pick for every day wear. It’s kind of a light warm pink that’s almost…frosted? sounds terribly 80’s I know but it’s dead sexy. The colour really brightens up my sallow complexion and the creamsheen finish makes your lips all pouty and stuff.
Mineralize Skin Finish Natural £22.00
Usually I just apply a bit of concealer and Chanel pressed powder but if I’m in need of more coverage or to feel and look a little more “done” this is like magic in a compact. I use the shade “Medium Golden” which admittedly is a little more tan than what I would normally choose but I apply a light dusting to areas I would normally “catch the sun” and then blend over the rest of my face. It’s so sheer it’s difficult to get it wrong and wields a flattering glow rather than a typical flat matt finish.
Lots of popular beauty blogger types use it to set foundation as apparently it keeps a base in place without appearing cake-y.
Prep & Prime Lip £13.00
I only use primer on my face for special occasions/where it’s important for my make-up to stay on and look polished, this clever little stick however goes on nearly every day. My lips are super dry, I put balm on every morning and every night before bed and frequently exfoliate yet I still suffer from the flakes. This somehow keeps lipstick looking “fresh”, stops it from seeping into creases and prevents that weird smeary look I sometimes find myself partaking in quite by accident, particularly in warmer climes. The waxy formula also somehow glides over flakes and helps to make them less obvious.
If you want to wear a really bright shade this with the addition of lipliner makes your pout fade and smudge proof. Promise.
Powder Blusher Well Dressed £18.00
I honestly don’t know of a brand that harbours such a wide range of hues and textures as MAC, you can’t fail to find a blush that suits your complexion (in my humble opinion). I naturally have um…several shades but the one where I regularly hit pan is “Well Dressed”, it’s kind of a pale-ish pink with subtle shimmer and a slightly mauve undertone. It works with my general yellowish-ness to make me look less jaundice, it’s also super sheer so is difficult to over-do (I am a sucker for “healthy” cheeks though and can be known to apply it a tad heavy-handed….and end up looking sunburnt.)
I also rate “Pink Swoon” (clean bright pink) and “Pinch O’Peach (warm peach)
Extended Play Lash £14.50
I tend to use this on my bottom lashes only, it doesn’t smudge or flake when the rest of your make-up feels all melty, it’s a nice glossy black too. It makes lashes super long but isn’t “buildable” as such hence why I don’t use it on the top, however, if you are a one/two coat kind of gal then by all means give this a whirl. The brush is tapered and skinny which I like – it reaches those really awkward bits.
Apparently one of the Pixiwoo sisters also uses this on her bottom lash line which makes me feel very cool and in the know….sort of.
You can purchase MAC in loads of places but I tend to order mine from Selfridges as they always seem to have lots of stock, plus I can treat myself to several other nice things at the same time….
So then folks, what MAC products would you recommend?

MAC Skin mineralize power is an absolute, everyday must for me. I don’t like to wear heavy foundation instead opting for BB cream or tinted moisturiser but a brush of this power over the top leaves you looking and feeling covered and ‘done’ without being cakey. I always have to have 1 on the go and 1 in back up – the thought of ever being without it terrifies me!
I also use the singular MAC eye shadows every day. I gave up on buying eye shadow palettes / sets a while ago as even in the loveliest set there would always be a shade I wouldn’t use. Buying the individual eye shadows means I can choose exactly the shades I want and can mix them depending on my mood / occasion. I also like that you can choose between sparkly and matt shades. Being honest I do have a rather large collection of different variations of brown! Some of my fave shades are wedge, honesty, naked lunch and orb.
For special occasions I use something called something like ‘face setting spray’ – its basically hairspray for your face that keeps all your makeup in place. It’s great once I learnt to not screw my face up when I applied it.
I tried the mascara but just couldn’t get on with it. With me it seems to flake, smudge and produce a rather unattractive clumpy lash look. Lots of people I know rave about the MAC one but I’ll stick with Bareminerals Lash Domination.
A face hairspray? why do I not not about this?! this sounds amazing!
Urban decay, face setting spray, they do three types. Not sure if this is the same one but they do do it x
It’s called Fix+ finishing mist. It’s great
I love the eyeshadows too, my favourite is Nylon x
Ah genius post. I have recently bought mac cc cream, the one to reduce redness which in fairness I don’t really find does much. It’s my cheeks that tend to be redder than anywhere else. I also used to use their prep and prime but switched to illamasqua hydra veil after buying it following a post here yay! I do however have my eye on their luminous skin primer from mac, it comes in either a golden tone or pinky tone and feels like silk! (Next month it’s mine). I really like their blusher lovecloud which is a new purchase (from Paris eek) and it’s like for me a mix between pink swoon and well dressed! I loves it! I got the flamingo lippie but not sure it looks quite right on me so might check out this one you mention! They have a new mascara just out but can’t think of the name, meant to be very good though and smudge proof! I bought their eyeshadow in gleam too this month and really like it for a subtle shimmer. And more daringly and my fave buy is their lipstick in morange which is an orange shamed and looks fab!! I have never dared wear one before but my sister assured me it looked great so I got it for holidays! And Essie meet me at sunset matches it perfectly for nails! I tend to veer towards mac or Chanel on every shopping trip, Chanel healthy glow blush is also on my list (it had sold out in Paris how could they?!)! X
Lovecloud sounds super! I think I might need it 🙂
Gutted Flamingo doesn’t work for you, have you tried blotting/adding another layer? or mixing with liner? x
Will give it a go, it’s lovely I just think it’s a tad pink for me if that makes sense? I will mix it with others though it’s all good! Bikini pink is my fave at the mo as well as Kate moss n16 x
Keep the ideas coming ladies. I love what I read about their products, but have never invested. I am currently on a healthy eating push (ah spirali how I love thee) and have decided to set mini goals. For every 7lbs lost, I get a trip to the mac counter!
What an awesome idea Sara!
I absolutely LOVE MAC products, I swear I’ve got about 78 eyeshadows – they’re just so great.
Has anyone tried the MAC prep + prime transparent finishing powder? Have heard good things about setting foundation with this so any insight would be most welcome 🙂
I haven’t Emma although I’ve also heard good things, I do rate the mineralise though, it’s super sheer x
LOVE MAC!!! I love their mineralize liquid foundation. I find it’s light enough for everyday, but still gives a flawless finish. I also swear by the mineralize skin finish powder. I use their bronzer in Golden, in summer when I want a light glow. And I’m obsessed with their eyebrow pencil, I use Spiked. I’ve used their mascara in the past and never been that thrilled , but everything else I’ve tried I have loved!
Being honest, I’m not a big MAC fan but there are two things I buy on repeat:
Vanilla Pigment – I think I’ve mentioned this one, oh about a hundred times on here already but you can literally put this dust everywhere. Use it as a highlighter under brows, on cheeks and on your cupids bow or mix it with a bit of moisturiser and run it down your pins for legs like Beyonce (minus the oil slick).
Eyeshadow in Brun – Looks a bit blah in the pan but is a great filler for brows (I’m blonde and use it everyday), good for adding a bit of definition to a nude eye or for doing full on smokes.
I love mac!
Will be going to try all of these products this weekend. I just bought viva glam v lipstick and I love it as an everyday.
you are all horrible people. My MAC shopping list has just got massive. A kind chap in the bath store genuinely talked me out of buying products last week… I think I have a problem :S
Oooh I do adore these posts. Since following RMW & RMS I created a ‘To Try’ list on my phone which I add recommendations to. Must say there isn’t anything I haven’t loved. Apart from the impact on my bank balance of course. I’m a massive Mac fan. For eyeshadows I use Orb, Naked Lunch, Honesty & Shroom all the time. Blushers have to be Pinch O Peach & Style, which is currently complementing my sun freckles beautifully. New shades I’m trying (& are a big hit!) are Mocha & Cubic. I am slightly obsessed with their lippies. My everyday go to’s are Creme cup & Creme D Nude. Thanks to Charlotte, Flamingo is my fave when I need to up the colour. Costa Chic gives even more oomph as it’s brighter & a more intense coraly colour – beaut!
