On Saturday morning, instead of my usual East London brunch that always involves eggs and sometimes involves a Bloody Mary, I headed into central London for brunch with Ella Woodward of Deliciously Ella, a hugely successful healthy eating blog (two million hits a month!) that’s packed with simple-to-make, totally delicious plant-based recipes that are free from dairy, gluten and refined sugar.
Proof that good things can come out of bad situations, Ella started the blog as a way of documenting her transition to a plant-based diet after being diagnosed with Postural Tachycardia Syndrome, which left her in chronic pain and suffering from unbearable stomach issues, constant headaches and heart palpitations. After researching holistic approaches to healing, she swapped a diet that consisted mostly of cereal, pasta, Ben & Jerry’s, Nutella and handfuls of Haribo, for one that was based around wholefoods and plants, and gave up meat, dairy, sugar, gluten, anything processed and all chemicals and additives. She’s since added an app to the growing Deliciously Ella empire.

Arriving at the Marylebone location we were greeted by Ella (just as friendly and glowing with health as you’d expect) who was putting the finishing touches to a table decorated with jam jars and milk bottles filled with fresh flowers and floral patterned straws, napkins strewn with hearts and prettily patterned bowls filled with fruit, granola and super foods.
Ella hosts regular cooking classes and started the brunches because she found that one of the things people loved most about the classes was talking to other people who are on a similar journey. At Ella’s request we introduced ourselves and explained what brought us here, a situation that usually gives me the fear, but the atmosphere was warm and supportive and it was interesting to hear everyone’s story (like me not everyone was vegan and no, we weren’t ejected on the spot).
We were joined by the founders of cold-pressed juice company Imbibery London and talk inevitably turned to juicing. I’ve always fancied doing a juice cleanse but worry about how I’d get through the day fuelled with nothing but, well, juice. Recently after a particularly busy period in her life Ella did a juice cleanse and saw it as a chance to reconnect with her body, slow down for three days, watch lots of Keeping Up With The Kardashians (her televisual weakness) and go to daily yoga classes. She said that at no point during the three days did she feel hungry and by the end she felt fully rejuvenated. I’m in!
When someone around the table said how expensive eating like Ella can be, she said that yes, if you were to bake every day it would be expensive but what she eats day-to-day is relatively inexpensive. Her go-to breakfast is a smoothie of berries, bananas and spinach, lunch is salad or roasted veggies (see the recipe section of Ella’s blog for loads of ideas) and one of her favourite dinners is brown rice cooked with black beans, tomato, tamari, wilted spinach and mashed avocado, which she makes in a batch on a Sunday.

Two hours passed quickly with conversation covering eating healthily at festivals (one brunchee was just back from Glastonbury and filled her rucksack with healthy snacks including bags of carrots), how friends can find your new lifestyle hard to deal with, sticking to your principles when you eat out (don’t be scared to ask how dishes have been prepared and if none of the main meals work put together your own meal with a selection of sides) and what’s coming up for Ella (look out for an update of the blog coming soon and a book next year). Ella’s enthusiasm for the way she eats is infectious and I headed home resolving to make more changes to what I eat. And to up my table decorating game. No more eating lunch in the kitchen while checking my favourite blogs for me. Oh no.
Have you tried any recipes from the Deliciously Ella blog or app? Which are your favourites? And have you ever done a juice cleanse? Which one? How did you feel? Would you do it again? Do share!
I follow Deliciously Ella’s instgram feed when I saw it recommended on RMS and love it. I’ve tried the Raw Brownies recipe on her website and they are AMAZING! Even my husband who is picky about eating dates loved them. Really simple to make (I think there are only 3 or 4 ingredients) and great as a sweet treat with a cuppa. Would highly recommend trying them out!
Ooh, I’m yet to try the Raw Brownies Mrs Norman, but I’ll definitely give them a go after your recommendation. Love a recipe that doesn’t come with a list of ingredients as long as your arm!
Breakfast got a whole lot better after downloading the app and people at work often ask about my gorgeous looking (and very tasty) rainbow salad, one of my fave recipes from Ella. It’s actually easy peasy to make and if you buy lots of raw ingredients in each week you can re-create lots of the dishes without breaking the bank.
I don’t think I would have the energy to do my job and enjoy a jam-packed weekend if I hadn’t found Deliciously Ella and bought a juicer.
The breakfast ideas have seriously improved my mornings too Emma! Which juicer do you have? I’m seriously considering a purchase, but can’t decide which one to go for!
I have the Phillips HR1863 which was about £70 I think. Not sure which ones are the best but this works for me, it’s not too big and is easy to clean too. You can put apples in whole along with spinach, kale and ginger and it comes out beautifully.
Good to hear Emma and not a bad price, it wouldn’t take long very long at all before I was in profit, the amount I pay for fancy juices when I’m out and about!
I am so pleased you introduced me to deliciously ella, I’ve just bought the Sarah wilson I quit sugar books and I ♥♥♥ its eye opening and a bit scary but in a good way
As for jucing, I have the Philips one mentioned above…my kids love a green juice lolly! I’ve always wanted to do a cleanse but i know for a fact that i wouldn’t survive!
Yes also loving Deliciously ella after seeing it recommended on here! I’ve just bought Sarah Wilson’s I quit sugar – amazing and terrifying (on a good way)
I have the same juicer as above and my kid’s love a green juice lolly 😉
I have always wanted to try a juice cleanse but I know I would never last!
Another vote for the Philips, thanks Gemma – I can feel a purchase coming on…!
Oh no, now I need this Philips Juicer! I have already bought the spiraliser that Miranda recommended. Those raw brownies sound amazing.
I’m also buying the spiraliser – I’m so easily led!
Ooh I LOVE her recipes, I’m really into smoothies and nut butters now because of her
I’m a big smoothie fan too Claire, and it’s not safe to leave an open jar of nut butter anywhere near me…!
I love the Deliciously Ella app!! We’ve made the kale chips and sweet potato wedges – gorgeous! The raw brownies and energy balls are delicious. We’re also loving having more juices and smoothies. The carrot, lentil and raisin salad is gorgeous and really satisfying, as is the squash and pine nut quinoa. I love trying new recipes from her app and think it’s helping with my awful sugar addiction! One final thing, apple wedges dipped into almond butter is my new favourite afternoon snack!
I must try making my own kale chips, I paid a ridiculous amount for a teeny bag from M&S yesterday. Yum, apple wedges dipped in almond butter sounds yummy Sarah!
Another Ella fan here! Discovered her blog a few weeks ago. Breakfast has been transformed in my household, the ultimate blueberry and banana breakfast smoothie is so delicious and filling. Just made the raw brownies tonight, only a few ingredients which a love! The warm spinach and butternut squash salad is delicious!
The warm salad sounds AMAZING Kim, definitely gonna give that one a try!
I did quite a lot of reading up a while ago and settled on the sage nutri-juicer which I can really recommend. Its a bit more pricey than the phillips one but gives you a bit more juice out of your veggies and fruit and is a more affordable type of the really pricey cold-press/ professional ones. It claims to keep 70% of the nutrients and lots of the cheaper ones lose so much, and has 2% of heat transfer so its basically a cold press one so well worth investing into to max the goodness you get. I love mine and was well worth every penny – I just need to lots of recipes to use the pulp up!
Thank you so much for the recommendation Amanda!
I am forever grateful for this post, I have spent the last 2 days watching all her videos and reading lots of her recipes. Going yummy food shopping at the weekend to try some of her dishes, they look fab. I’ve been seriously considering going veg/vegan and while I’m not ready to take the plunge – am going to start off with healthier breakfasts and lunches and see if I can make it routine to eat more raw food in the first part of the day.
I got the Sage Nutriplus 2 weeks ago with some wedding John Lewis vouchers and also love it. As long as you rinse it straight after and don’t let the pulp dry it is super easy to clean. xx
Healthier breakfasts and lunches sounds like a good place to start Nicola. I find that the healthier start I have to my day, the more likely it is that I make healthy choices for the rest of the day. Ooh another vote for the Sage. Good to hear. Although I’m torn now! x
