There are some things in life that I firmly believe you should invest in. Actually, they’ll be a post coming up in the not too distant future on this very topic, however, I also have to admit to my guilty pleasure of bargain-basement shopping.
The 99p store, Wilko and Aldi are just a few or my favourites. I am incapable of passing one of these stores without nipping in to see what wares are available.
The lure of the cheapie shop started well before the recession as I have always loved a bargain. When someone compliments me on a recent clothing purchase I find myself compelled to respond with the price, “£10, Primark,” when it would be far more normal to just say, “Thank you”.
After spending an inordinate amount of time searching Etsy for a new kit bag to store all my ribbons, clips, scissors and excessive amount of mini pegs, I found myself in the 99p store. I now own a very smart, polka-dot number and still have change from a pound. Awesome.
Wilkinson’s stationery department has served me exceptionally well over the years. Where else would you pick up cute sticky notes and heart-shaped paper clips for pocket-money prices?
Then there’s Aldi and Lidl. You can’t move in my Mum’s local Aldi for Barbour-clad people who have parked in the Sainsbury’s opposite to do part of their weekly shop and then dashed across to Aldi for the bargains. Their trolleys are laden with budget Prosecco, anti-ageing cream and £3 floral bouquets, and I’m right behind them with my basket full of salmon en croute, antipasti delicacies and facial wipes.
The days of visiting Primark and loading up my basket with things I don’t need are firmly behind me. Too many times I went into a drawer and realised that I had a top that didn’t really fit that had been purchased because it was only a few quid. Now I just prefer to buy the things I need for the best price (and quality) that I can. Admittedly my job means I do need to have a cupboard stocked full of props, so I can justify the need to buy up the whole of Home Bargain’s party section.
I know I am not alone in my penchant for purse-pinching so please share your favourite shops to grab a bargain. What’s been your biggest saving and where do you proudly declare that your low-cost wares are from?
My husband works at an auction house so has ruined our perception of how much things should cost. We bought a beautiful Victorian side board for £50. Most of our “nice” furniture is from auction. Its about a third cheaper then retail!x
What a fab job Clare. He must find treasures every day x
yes Lauren mostly treasures…. sometimes a load of old crap sigh. Have to put up with the crap to get the gems haha
Don’t we all Clare 😉
I don’t want to start a big scary TK MAXX debate (maybe already too late) but… If you can “do” it… And by that I mean whenever I mention shopping in TK MAXX a large proportion of my friends simply state that they just can’t do it. Not in a snobby way but in a jumble sale clothes all over the floor can’t see the wood for the trees kind of way.
I, however, can do it 🙂
And I’m like you Lauren – I can’t help but announce my bargain. The latest being a Hardy Amies Suit that can be found on Mr Porter for nearly £800.00
I was at a wedding last week and had some nice compliments on the cut but I just couldn’t help myself… Instead being all “Yeah it’s a Hardy Amies of Saville Row don’t you know…” I was practically shouting at people TK MAXX, £160.00
So not cool.
I’m a big fan of charity shops especially the ones in fancy schmancy areas!! I am currently the proud owner of some lovely choos that cost £40 opposed to £400 and hadnt been worn after a recent rummage in a chiswick oxfam.
I dont know whats happened to cardiff tk maxx but its actually been quite orderley during my last few visits.
I totally am the same as you guys with not being able to refrain from sharing my bargains going to have to stop myself somehow as Ive started sharing the hubbies bargains with the world too ooops!!! xx
That has to be the best bargain ever Helen. Congrats on the Choos! x
I love bargains too! I can’t say that I’m an ardent car booster, but before Xmas Mr Galps and I packed up the car to get rid of some stuff before it was even close to sun rise on a Sunday morning (ouch)! We ended up coming back with a really nice nest of tables after looking around the shops for one for ages but not wanting to spend over £100 on some tiny tables?! The ones we found were just £15 and I love telling people when they comment on how pretty they are!
Fab bargain Kitty. It’s great when you manage to save loads on something you actually need x
I am exactly the same, I am the proud owner of a large (and rather thick) rug from Oxfam that cost £7. I could not believe my luck. I would not have gotten through my art degree without a budget stationers either. I love paperchase but I can’t bring myself to buy too much at once in there!
£7 for a thick rug? What a steal! I’ve been looking for a teeny weeny rug for my office and am struggling to find anything under £100! X
Have you tried urban outfitters Lauren? X
I’m so glad others feel the need to announce their bargains too! I just can’t stop doing it!
Me and my Hubby found our beautiful country style kingsize solid oak bed on a British Heart Foundation shop for £200, as opposed to paying out £800+ for a new one! I’m always scouting eBay for a bargain too 😛 xx
Wow! I’m definitely due another charity shop trawl x
Personally i’m more impressed if people manage to find bargains. I’d be more jealous if someone picked up an item for less than if they paid a fortune for it. I scoured ebay for the perfect table and was outbid a few weeks ago by a hidden bidder. The very next day I found the exact same table for half the price in British Heart Foundation. Plus you feel a bit better about yourself if your money is going to charity and you are upcycling. 🙂
Best bargain shops include Homesense, Wilkos, and George at Asda.
Great find Jo. Love that you found the perfect piece in the charity shop
