I would happily sit in a bath of baked beans, or stay silent for a day, or push my body to extreme limits. However I’m not sure I would ever have the courage to shave off all my hair in the name of charity.
But that’s exactly what Rich’s mum is doing tomorrow. Moreover, she’s letting Lyra take the first few snips. Yes, she is letting her uber-excitable and excessively clumsy three-year-old grandchild loose with the scissors. For Lyra, whose only experience with scissors has been to help me cut washi tape for DIY Christmas cards, and whose favourite thing to do at the moment is play ‘hairdressers’, this is going to be a dream come true.
And from one awe-inspiring lady to our very own brilliant Becky. Becky’s getting those luscious locks of hers chopped off and will be donating them to The Little Princess Trust as part of the Chop to Your Chin campaign with ghd. If you’re not familiar with the Trust, it’s a downright heart-warming charity that creates real hair wigs for kids who have lost their hair through cancer treatments and other illnesses. The charity will accept any hair that’s seven inches or longer and if you book in at a participating salon to have the chop on 21 September then the haircut will be free.
There’s a lot of scary stuff going on in the world at the moment. A LOT. It makes me worry to think about what this strange little planet that we live on is going to be like when my kids are old enough to fend for themselves. But random acts of kindness and charities such as these restore my faith in humanity somewhat and give me a glimmer of hope that there are still a lot of decent souls out there.
What have you done in the name of greater good? Would you ever shave your head for charity?
Moira is raising money for Macmillan via their Brave the Shave campaign in memory of her dad. And Becky is going to be donating her tresses to the Little Princess Trust.
What a brilliant post and well done Moira and Becky.
I donated my hair to little princess trust when I got it cut off in January- it is so easy, you just whack it in a ziplock bag then envelope and off it goes! Would encourage anyone to do it.
I didn’t realise you could donate your hair this way too, thanks for pointing this out Lucy! Easy peasy x
Great post Lis and go moira go!! I bet Lyra can.not. contain herself! xx
It’s going to be interesting Aim! Xx
One of the twelve year old pupils at the school I work at shaved her head completely for the Little Princess Trust. She had previously worn her hair down to her waist so it was an unbelievable thing for her to do. I know how nervous she was going back to school and showing her peers but she was determined to do it. A total legend in my eyes xxx
That’s incredible Hannah. What a little star. X
I braved the shave last year in memory of mom. It’s the most incredible thing to do and so liberating. Well done Moira !!
This is lovely Julia. I bet your mom would have been so proud. Great that it was liberating too. X
Gosh! How amazing!!!!
Totes amazing Amy x
I’ve worked for a charity for almost a decade so have done a fair bit and the 15,000ft skydive was the biggest thing. I don’t think I would be brave enough to shave my hair though! What an incredible thing to do!
Good on you Tracey! I did a skydive a few years ago and I was so terrified that I cried. But absolutely loved it in the end. Not long now til Moira gets the chop 🙂
I donated 9 inches of hair to the little princess trust about 3 years ago. My husband chopped my hair before a trip to the hairdresser for a tidy up. I will never forget the sound the scissors made as they sheared through my hair but it felt really good giving what I could and hopefully my hair has helped make someone really happy in a dark time. I would shave my head for charity but at the moment it’s too short to be much use to anyone.
