Does it work? What is it supposed to do exactly? Do you really need to use a separate eye cream to your regular moisturiser? Which eye cream is the best? Where and when should you apply eye cream?!
So many questions…and I’m hoping many of you can pitch in with your thoughts and experiences. I am personally a big eye cream advocate, I say cream really I should say product – there are a wide variety of lotions, serums and balms available too. As I suffer from very dry skin I have used a specific eye moisturiser since I was 19, yes I know…A LONG TIME. But my concealer/make-up always goes on much better, lasts longer and I would say my lines are not terribly apparent. Whether that’s down to the dedication of years applying “preventative” measures, luck of the gene pool or a combination of both I guess I’ll never know.
I began my teenage adventures in peeper maintenance with an amazing super light product from Origins, it had some kind of magic mushroom extra in it supposedly. Regardless of the radical claims of the ingredient list it was perfect, and then a few years later they discontinued it. Ruddy typical.
Since then I’ve tried all manner of pots and pumps and it’s only fairly recently that I’ve discovered what I believe might be a best friend for life. The main issues I’ve had with eye creams is that they either react and cause unsightly redness or flare ups, they actually make my skin drier (I notice this with anything “anti-aging” in particular) or they are so goopy, anything you put on top creases or slides off.
My husband once treated me to a consultation with a very highly regarded dermatologist around about the time I turned thirty – I wanted a kind of skincare regime overhaul/recommendations for exactly what I should be using as my collagen supplies allegedly took a run for the hills and all manner of wrinkles and pigmentation issues were banging on the proverbial door.
The dermatologist’s thoughts were that all that was really needed was… vaseline. Yep you read that right. VASELINE. She said you essentially just need a little ahem, lubrication. Dab some on sparingly before you catch some Z’s and voila apparently. This is all good and well and cheap, but personally, I need something I can use in the mornings before my Estee Lauder Double Wear Brush On Glow BB concealer pen gets a thorough swiping over dark shadows. And petroleum jelly is just going to create a full on shiny/smudgy situation isn’t it?
For the last few years I have been a fan of Bobbi Brown Extra Eye Repair Cream (currently 10% off at John Lewis) and in the colder months it’s a life saver – particularly over night when the central heating is turning your epidermis into the Sahara. But it is potent – a little goes a long way. You need considerable sinking-in time if you are to apply any kind of cosmetics on top. And if like me you simply can’t afford the luxury of lounging around waiting (small people will do that to you) then you may want to give it a miss for the AM.
I read a review for Vichy Aqualia Awakening Eye Balm in some magazine or other whilst waiting for a prescription at the Doctors. It sounded ideal – velvety in texture, quickly absorbed and very hydrating. Not to mention the fact it’s free from parabens and perfume.
It’s certainly lived up to it’s claims for me, I love it. £15 for 15ml isn’t exactly a bargain but significantly less than luxe brands and Boots often have 3 for 2 on various skincare ranges, I notice Vichy is usually in the mix. The noticeable results have been improved hydration (which I believe makes everything more youthful looking in itself) a definite “brightening” effect and an increase in the longevity of my concealer.
In terms of application I pat/tap a teeny amount along the orbital bone from the inner corner to the outer corner towards the hairline, I’ve always heard you shouldn’t rub/drag as the skin is so thin and delicate. Too near your eye ball and well…it’s going to be rather uncomfortable. I don’t make a habit of applying it to my eyelids as when I’ve done so in the past, they have gone a little puffy. There is a great application technique GIF on The Cut if what I have tried to explain doesn’t quite make sense.
When the area around my eyes is having a real flaky day (happens) then I reach for my wonder salve – Lansinoh HPA Lanolin Cream and apply a minute amount to any rough patches with a cotton bud. Only over night of course – but it really works.
There are so many eye creams on the market, making all sorts of radical claims. Promising to diminish fine lines, completely eradicate bags, lift (!) and give you 8 hours sleep in a bottle….I would love to know if any of you have witnessed these kinds of effects.
Do you use an eye cream? Do you use your regular moisturiser as an eye cream? (I tried this but as mentioned before, it seems a little heavy and makes me slightly swollen, my Aveeno is ok but takes a while to sink in ) have you ever had a serious reaction/wasted your hard earned cash for a pot of posh that was completely useless?
Do you just use vaseline?!

Oh man! I was hopeless at finding an eye cream that worked until Christmas of last year… Now I am SOLD on Kiehl’s Creamy Eye Treatment With Avocado.
I get a dry under eye area too (along with cheeks but oily tzone *eyeroll*) and I apply sparingly at night to have plump, dewy, smoothed out, non-eyebag eyes the next day. It’s also great slathered on during a long haul flight.
In fact, Gavin’s now a convert too. That teamed with Kiehls Midnight Recovery Oil is my evening skincare prep.
Although… Vaseline does sound significantly more kind to my bank card.
Naomi I have heard great things about Kiehls Avocado cream, and it’s great Gavin uses it too – James has really great skin (so unfair!) but that doesn’t mean he shouldn’t use something, yet he uses nothing….not even a light moisturiser. Think I might put one in his stocking!
My eyes tend to go puffy rather than dry, though the rest of my face is starting its usual winter flake off about now! I periodically use the Clarin Eye Contour Gel when I’m feeling flush! I keep it in the fridge so it feels extra soothing when applied. It does help reduce puffiness and feels really lovely on. The lady at the Clarins counter once told me you should use your ring finger to pat in eye creams and gels as it has a lighter touch than your other fingers. It seems to work though!
Sophie my Mum is currently using a Clarins eye cream – not sure which one but she really rates it. I think my Vichy would work well in the fridge, might have to give it a whirl!
I’ve also been using eye creams since I was quite young but I read in the fantastic Sali Hughes book, Pretty Honest, that you don’t really need it at all. She says it’s just a tiny pot of moisturiser that’s more expensive. I’m still using eye cream at the moment though, for years I used Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair Serum but I’ve recently started with Kiehls Midnight Recovery Eye Cream. I can’t say if any of them really work, it’s hard to know what you’d look like if you hadn’t been using them isn’t it? I still like to dab something round my eyes every night but it’s probably just habit!
Krysia that’s what I think! Because I’ve used it for so long how do I know if it’s worked or not?! Would my skin still be relatively line free if I’d used nothing or just vaseline?!
What I like about my latest find is it’s also brightening, I feel as though I have to use less concealer and I’ve not experienced that before x
I’m with Naomi with Kiehl’s Creamy Eye Treatment With Avocado, best eye cream I have ever used! I used to use the Liz Earle one in a tiny tube but it’s never available anymore and I’ve heard rumours it’s being discontinued. So after lots of trial and error, I settled on the Kiehl’s beauty, a firm staple in my beauty routine!
Discontinuing is the bain of my life. If they ever get rid of my Estee Lauder concealer I will march to their HQ and throw a full on tantrum outside.
I’ve been using 100% coconut oil as my eye make up remover for the last year or so. It has definitely made a difference and no I don’t feel like I need an under eye cream at all. I fact I use coconut oil for everything – cuticle oil, on dry knees/elbows, sometimes an over night deep treatment for my face or hair. Interestingly I suffer from acne and coconut oil definitely doesn’t make it worse! Plus it’s uber great value for money – mine was £3.25 for a jar which I’m only half way through using!!!!
Sarah this is really interesting. Don’t you find it gets all over your lashes and makes them…oily? Or do you rinse with water? I used an oil based eye make-up remover once and my mascara smudged everywhere because the oil was still clinging on to lashes (well, I assume)
It does sound like super value x
Sarah I take my make up off every night with Coconut Oil too! It’s the best thing at removing waterproof mascara. And my skin has been great since.
I slather it on, Charlotte, then use a hot, wet (but wringed out) flannel to remove it. If you take it off properly, you shouldn’t find it oily afterwards.
My mum swears by Vaseline. She always has a pot with her. I really must nip out and get some before the winter months and I’ll certainly be trying it on my eyes. My favourite cream is the Olay Total Effects eye cream although will admit to being a bit hit and miss with using it. xx
I’ve always been quite regimented about my skincare because of problem skin as a teen so am quite keen on eye creams. I have really sensitive eyes though so even putting stuff NEAR them tends to set them off. One that I find very effective is Elemis Pro Collagen Advanced Eye Treatment which is super spendy but I absolutely love it, it’s really smooth and good for sensitive skin. Every now and then I try to go for something cheaper but tend to go back to this one (also – you use so little that it lasts bloomin’ AGES).
Elemis have re-launched their pro collagen range haven’t they? I used their night cream (as a day cream!) for a year or so, loved it. But spendy…..it’s all about value though and if a little goes a long way then price per ml might be less than some seemingly cheaper options x
Yes I think so! I do think the range is very good (I use the day and night cream also) – and haven’t found anything that really rivals it. I usually try to wait for some sort of discount where possible to make it a little less painful!
Another Elemis user here! Except I use Absolute Eye Serum – it comes in a little pipette and says to apply 2 drops to each eye but I find one on each is plenty. It absorbs quite quickly and when I’m not using it I quickly notice the difference. Got mine for Xmas last year and still got LOADS left so although its probably a spendy one it does last.
Kitty is it wrong that I want to try this because of the pipette? Totes hygienic.
Honestly, I have never quite found an eye cream/ face cream that really suits for day time make up wear. At the age of 21 I think I have plenty of time, but I do once a week sleep (yes I know icky pillows) in a full face of vaseline including on my eyes. It honestly works wonders and keeps my skin ezcema free.
Amelia, my Nana used to do this – and even when she passed away at 93, she had the skin of someone decades younger, hardly any lines at all. I am tempted to try it as you’ve mentioned the eczema-free results x
I’m one of those annoying people with zero allergies, intolerances etc.
The only exception are my peepers on which pretty much every potion and lotion (even sensitive-special) feel like acid.
Many years ago I “borrowed” some of my housemates Clinique all about eyes and it was perfection. It’s quite a gel/serum consistentcy and perfect for day wear. I’ve been through countless pots since and will buy it as long as they keep making it.
Loving the idea of coconut oil /Vaseline as evening treat!
I have exactly the same problem Sarah and use Clinique all about eyes. It’s lush! Really struggle to find make up removers that don’t bring my eyes out in a eczema-ey rash though!
Lush indeed! I use dermalogica pre cleanse which is a basically an oil but it dissolves everything (even my waterproof mascara/eyeliner) and is really gentle. If you have any dermalogica places near you, ask for a sample!x
I also use lansinoh on dry skin but (God knows why now I try to think back…) tried sudocream as an eye cream and it’s brilliant. It’s more fluid than lanolin so it goes on better on delicate skin. Obviously it looks a bit odd so is best applied at night but it really makes a difference to me. Something about the colour of it also seems to have a brightening effect by morning (in a natural looking way – not just two big white circles round my eyes!). I’ve got one of those travel size tubes just for this purpose – not a good idea to use the children’s pot!! When my skin is really dry I do sometimes put it all over my face at bedtime. Again, not a good look but worth it by morning!
I like a mix of cheap and cheerful and pricey posh stuff! I didn’t realise how spendy the latter was until just now as I always am given it, but I adore Pinks Boutique anti ageing serum, it has done wonders for my skin. I lather it on at night and after showers and its magic, make up goes on perfectly after letting it soak in for a few mins.
My alternative to Vaseline is Waitrose Baby Bottom Butter! It’s magic stuff, and so cheap you can smear it all over. It’s just hydrogenated olive oil with vanilla essence so all natural and no nasties, and I love the sweet smell. Great for overnight soothing.
Waitrose baby bottom butter is excellent! Dirt cheap and great for an overnight treat. Fab on elbows/heels/hands etc. They also do a solid coconut massage oil which is great on dry skin overnight. I have just invested in the Origins Dr Weil mega mushrooms range – I’ve got an 8 week old baby and pregnancy has left my once clear and lovely skin in a big rosacea/acne mess. The Origins is great for combating the redness and dryness – any tips on the acne gratefully received though!
[…] I was reading Charlotte’s post on eye creams and saw loads of reader recommendations for coconut oil and thought I’d give it a whirl. […]
