Earlier in the year I decided to give my dining room a bit of a spruce-up on a £200 budget. I’ve lost the shabby chic look and instead have some form of scandinavian-meets-rustic-slightly-industrial thing going on instead.
I have to be honest, I ‘borrowed’ a lot of bits from other rooms for this makeover, however I actually spent less than £200. So what have we been up to?
The walls were painted with three coats of Dulux Timeless Emulsion costing about 30 quid. I’ve used this shade in lots of rooms now as it seems to absorb the colours around it making it suitable for every room and extremely versatile.
The best £16 I’ve ever spent was on a tin of Valspar ‘Charcoal Sketch Eggshell’. I bought our large white cabinet about two years ago and always intended to paint the inside a darker shade. However I really felt the room would benefit from a standout piece of furniture and so my Dad very kindly spent a day painting the outside of the cupboard. I absolutely love it. Even though Adam thought it was from Ikea… James also used the same paint to add a few coats to the old mirror we hang above the fireplace.
I meant to replace the bulbs in the light fittings for something more snazzier but couldn’t find any bulbs which would provide adequate light so the standard ones remain. I also had no luck finding a new table lamp for the room. I originally had my eye on this one from BHS but decided it looked far better in my living room.
The very simple tripod base for the floor lamp was only £22 from B&Q. It does twist slightly but I think it adds to the styling! I found the white shade in their end-of-line discount section for a tenner.
I love my DIY Lightbox from the This Modern Life. Unfortunately the light isn’t working in mine at the moment and I didn’t get around to replacing it (though the lovely folks at This Modern Life were very obliging). For £30 you get the box and a load of film letters to create you own quotes and messages. Total cost for lighting came in at £62. The festoon lights were purchased earlier this year from Next.
The dining table was left untouched but at some point I do intend to strip off the varnish and wax. I would have loved mismatched chairs but for the moment I’m storing my tolix style stools from the garden in the dining room instead to add to the eclectic style. I already had one of Ikea’s faux sheepskins so I bought another one for a tenner to top and tail two of the chairs. It makes for a much cosier, scandi style look.
I splashed out about £60 to have my David Ehrenstråhle prints framed. The New York and Paris prints were birthday presents so I wanted to give them the treatment they deserved. Sadly the paper has begin to pucker so I need to sort this out ASAP.
I bought a few cacti and pots from Ikea for about a tenner and as my budget doesn’t stretch to Fired Earth tiles for my bathroom I just bought one single patisserie tile to use as a centrepiece. Here I corralled a H&M vase by mum bought me last Christmas and an Anthro candle James gave me for my birthday.
Finally James sprayed a multi aperture frame I’d bought from Laura Ashley about five years ago to a matt black finish to hang on the wall. All the other items were previously owned however I’ve tried to link as many of them as possible (or at least a few things in a similar style in the widget below).
The room isn’t radically different but it’s surprising how refreshing a lick of paint and some new accessories can be! Anyone else planning a room makeover?

Love, love, love! The whole room looks great, and I especially love the dark cabinet. I have to admit that I haven’t always been a monochrome fan but the balance in your room is spot on and I think the wooden table helps to keep the warmth.
I started to give my dining room a bit of makeover by painting it all a creamy colour and instead of rushing in I have been waiting to get a feel of what is going to work. The room does feel lighter but with it being so dark the cream looks almost yellow when the lights are on. I suppose it’s an excuse to extend my obsession with Annie Sloan to her wall paints and try one of the whites. I am also hoping to expose the brick on the fireplace too as the room really feels like it needs a real feature.
Love taking the slower approach Claire. It’s a much better idea in the long run.
I’m a huge fan of an exposed brick fireplace x
Hi, I love the dark cabinet! Did you get the Paris and New York prints from the ‘My Guide to’ website? My husband ordered me a New York one for my birthday and we haven’t received it, can’t get hold of anyone either! Just wondered if it took a long time for it to be delivered from ordering it?
Hi Kat, oh no, how rubbish it hasn’t arrived.
My mother-in-law’s husband very kindly picked the prints up when he was over in Sweden so I didn’t have to deal with delivery. Hope your New York one arrives very soon x
Aaah I do love a charcoal and copper combo. Lovely stuff Lauren!
But now I have a problem, I’ve been poised to buy a lightbox and copper mule mugs a couple of times but haven’t got round to it yet… now if I do it’ll be totally copying you. dammit. I’m still going to buy them. You are my interiors muse!
We included eau de nil with our grey & copper scheme in the living/dining rooms and it complements beautifully, although most of the walls are a soft white so I found this gorgeous Tom Pigeon print at my friends shop which set it all off perfectly: http://pencilmeinshop.bigcartel.com/product/anstruther-foil-print
Can any other readers hook me up with a link for a fairly wide & short copper terranium? I’ve shopped around but cant quite find the perfect one. Closest I’ve got is a brass and glass tray from Oliver Bonas so I might just go for that and plant it up.
xx
I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one with a Light Box and a Moscow mule cup so go for it!
The colours in the foil print are beautiful Karen. It’s going to be a gorgeous room.
I bought a copper terrarium for a friend from HomeSense. Have you tried there? x
One day we’ll finish it, just been waiting to have the flooring done for year!!
Ooh I haven’t tried Homesense. Apparently a new one just opened in Liverpool. On it now. Ta love x
Love the simplicity & it looks so cosy with the sheepskins. Can I ask where you got the rug from? It’s exactly what I am looking for in the kitchen!
Hi Fleur, it’s just a jute one from ikea x
Love the new look Lauren! The copper is gorgeous x
Gorgeous Lauren! Love your use of paint and copper! I’m currently banging my head looking for chandeliers – traditional style – any ideas???? Or any of the lovely RMS crew able to point in the right direction? I’ve looked in all the usual places and drawing blanks x
Ooooh I’ll have to have a little think. Hoping some of the readers have some suggestions too.
Have you tried any of those members shopping site? Like Achica? x
Love this update Lauren, just catching up on blog reading now so I missed it earlier in the week. Can I ask, did you need to sand the cabinet and mirror much to paint them or is the valspar paint like a chalk paint? I’ve got a big old dresser I want to paint for our new house and I can’t decide whether to go for chalk paint with minimal prep, or go the whole hog and strip it right back and paint it properly x
