Indigo, dark blue, navy. Call it what you like. I love it. Strictly speaking indigo is a colour between blue and purple on the visual spectrum, while dark blue is, well, dark blue. However you know what I’m getting at here, I’m talking about the hue that’s everywhere at the moment; the inky, midnight, dark, moody and sober shade of blue.
In my own home I’ve slapped it on my front door, a chest of drawers and more recently on my china cupboard as part of my dining room makeover. I’m seriously tempted to paint my bath with Farrow and Ball Railings but so far haven’t got round to it. Truth be told I wrote abut this interiors trend back on my own blog a couple of years ago but it shows no sign of going away.
Walls
If, unlike me, you’re brave and would like to add to your walls then I’ve included a gallery of my favourite shades. Some are more grey, others distinctly more purple. All are delicious, sumptuous and oh so very elegant. If you hover over any of the images below you’ll find the brand and shade name.
Accents
For the shy, more retiring types, this little decor collection shows you can add a dark blue or blueish-black accent instead and still get maximum impact. Those stairs? Be still my beating heart. You can see a hint of copper in the image of the staircase too; gold, copper, brass looks stunning with these moody shades.
If painting or tiling is still a bit too much then hit the internet and grab yourself one or two of these beauties to add a splash of indigo to your abode. We even have a pinterest board dedicated to the blue colour scheme.
Have you added any moody blues to your home? What’s your favourite shade and how are you using it?

Ohhhh! I just love moody blues.
I studied ‘colour theory’ for two years in art college and some people can hear and taste colours, the closet I have come to that is with dark blue…it makes my mouth water. Apparently that’s to do with the perceived threat I feel from it! Amazing huh?
I’m starting my kitchen make over in September with dark blue cupboard doors (farrow and ball Hague blue).
My other favourite colours are dark grey, and apple green. (All over used in my house!) but I like that dark blue seems to have an extra dimension over dark grey.
I recently got an orangey tomato red chest from a thrift store and that’s becoming a firm favourite for accent colours.
Lovely links though! Thank you!
Oh wow Alice, your orangey tomato chest sounds fabulous. I bet it looks gorgeous.
Our living room is juniper ash don Little Greene. I love it, the colour changes so much with the light. We have coral pink ercol chairs and a stripy multi colour sofa to brighten it up and some touches of copper too
One of my absolute favourites Rachel. Very much liking the sounds of the coral combo x
We painted the lounge in our new house in Stiffkey Blue by Farrow and Ball. I was a little nervous that it might be overpowering in what is a cosy room, but it looks great!
Oh Kirsty, very envious. What a stunning colour!
Argh! I am so torn at the moment about whether to go for a fairly neutral mid grey kitchen or take the risk and go inky blue, brass fittings and all. I love the blue but am worried that it’s too on trend and I won’t feel the same way in 5 years but seriously, look… http://www.devolkitchens.co.uk/kitchens/shaker-kitchens/balham-kitchen/
That kitchen is AMAZING! The stuff of dreams. Can you go for wooden doors so you can always paint over in a couple of years?
Lauren – is that your doorknob? Please tell me where I can get one!
I mean door knocker!!
Hi Kate, that is indeed my knocker! I bought it from here – http://www.broughtons.com/store/product/84542/Small-Fox-Door-Knocker-Polished-Brass-Unlacquered/ x
Thanks so much! Love it! x
I love blues! We have just moved into our new house (after your very helpful home selling tips a few months back!) and have decorated our bedroom in grey walls with a blue feature wall at our headboard. We chose B&Q Colours in Nirvana! Now to steal some accessory ideas…
Oh Marianne, Happy New Home! So glad we helped you sell. Loving your blue and grey combo x
Lauren, what is the colour of your front door? I love it.x
Hello Gina!
It’s F&B Railings. One of my faves x
Thanks Lauren.x
