Last weekend I had my first lolly of the season. Well I suppose it was more of an ice cream but it did have a stick in it. Despite my best efforts to keep away from naughty foods the lure of the ice cream van tune and a freezer of Magnums was just too much.
Magnums are my absolute favourite. I love how every so often the chocolate lifts itself from the clutches of the ice cream and you get a really satisfying crunchy bite. Delicious.
Sadly the thin layer of chocolate had other plans and as I was gutted when, one by one, the three sides of chocolatey goodness fell from the ice cream on to the floor leaving me seriously tempted to throw a toddler tantrum. Clearly I’m out of practice and need to improve my technique by adding a multipack of Magnums to my trolley next time I’m in Sainsbury’s.
Sadly it may be raining where you are today but hopefully we have many long sunny days ahead, perfect for getting our chops round a frozen delicacy.
I’m quite tempted to whip up a batch of my own lollies, though need to get hold of some moulds first. Both Lakeland and Amazon have lots to choose from and then perhaps I’ll try out these banana and peanut creations from Hedi Hearts.
What’s your favourite frozen treat? Do you like to feast on ice cream or prefer to lick a lolly? Or are you more of a gelato or sorbet kind of girl?
Have a great weekend folks. Let’s hope the sun shines and if it doesn’t be sure to pop back on both Saturday AND Sunday as we’ll have new posts going up every day.
I do love a magnum too and appreciate the devastation the loss of the chocolate can cause! We were given these moulds http://www.zokuhome.com/products/fish-pop-molds as a Christmas present and have just used them for the first time. We kept it to a very tame orange flavour for our first attempt but I was at a festival last Sunday where there was a cocktail-lolly van so I think I quite fancy attempting a gin and tonic lolly yum. Oh and I found out yesterday an ice lolly is called a lolly ice in Liverpool!
Oooh fish shaped – they’re loads of fun!
Loving the gin and tonic idea x
Wow those peanut butter banana lollies look amazing! Thanks for the recipe. I make a similar ice cream with frozen banana then blend it with peanut butter and cocoa powder! It’s seriously good and can be enjoyed without the guilt!
I’m much more of an ice cream girl than lolly.
Your recipe sounds delicious Carly. I am obsessed with peanut butter at the moment!
White chocolate Magnums are the ultimate naughty treat! I’ll defos be putting a box or two in the trolley this weekend. One of my faves is a Twister as it’s the best of both; lolly and ice cream. Who says you can’t have your cake (or lolly) and eat it?!
Oooh yes, I forgot about a twister. Good choice 🙂
OMG those banana and peanut butter lollies look like the best thing since sliced bread. It’s not even sunny here and I’m tempted to head to the shops and buy all the ingredients RIGHT NOW!
Also, I used to live in the States and there ice cream selection was so much better. I still cry a little at the memory of Haagen Dazs Peppermint Bark and Cinnamon Buns Ben and Jerrys… and Chubby Hubby Ben and Jerrys. And, Trader Joes green tea mochi ice cream. Oh how I miss you all!
Amazing Mel. All those flavours are heavenly!
I love a good old fashioned Fab….quite low on the cals front too, so it’s a win win. My favourite is a Nobbly Bobbly – not so low on the calories, but life would be pretty pants without ice cream in the sun…
Nobbly Bobbly! The best name for an ice cream ever.
I’m also a fan of Magnums and twisters, as well as being partial to a mint feast (hard to come by these days!), mint Cornetto, tub of ice-cream (preferably salted caramel, coconut or pistachio) and mango sorbet… However, if I could only pick one I’d opt for a Solero – tropical tangy lolly and ice-cream in one! x
Mint Feasts are so hard to find. The ice cream van always claims to have ‘just sold the last one’.
Salted caramel has to be the best ice cream flavour ever.
It’s still sunny here in Scotland hurrah (not for much longer though boo to weekend weather forecast). I like a Twister ice cream and if I’m going to an ice cream shop (preferably a proper gelato one in Italy) I like 1 scoop chocolate and have it with a raspberry or strawberry sorbet – ohhhh it works so well together 🙂 Throw on some hot choco sauce and we’re good to go!
Mixing it up Lynn. I like it! 🙂
Cocktail lolly’s are on my to-do-list for the weekend. I’m thinking G&T, Mojito and Pina Colada. I don’t have any molds, but I do have sticks so i’m going to try putting it into plastic cups and popping the stick in… they may be slightly wonky, but after a couple I don’t think I’ll mind!
I’m also going to try freezing the wild strawberries that are growing in my garden into ice cubes, and maybe some edible flowers and herbs too. You know, just to make Pimms that bit more interesting…
What a gorgeous idea Kate. I may have to steal x
Oooh Kate I had a similar idea last week and froze fresh mint and blueberries into my ice cubes. They were amaze dropped into a glass of something.. shall we say.. alcoholic! x
Darn it, no mint in my herb garden. I don’t think parsley would have the same effect….
Borage flowers in an ice cube look soooo pretty. And it keeps them for when you need them as they don’t last long on the plant. (ps don’t eat borage if you’re preggers though). I froze some mint in ice cubes last night to glam up soft drinks mostly. Although also looks great in a G&T / Pimms. Totally off topic but a friend of mine swears by frozen sticks of cucumber for teething babies.
Good idea to pop in your Hendricks too 😉 x
Chocolate falling off a magnum is literally one of the most upsetting small things in life. It’s the way it seems to do it in slow motion… I think I’m getting teary! xx
Three times it happened! It was utterly devastating. To make matters worse it was my birthday and my husband didn’t even offer me any of the chocolate off his. Can you believe it?!
How odd that you post this today on the very day my new lolly mould has just arrived!
We love – actually make that a LOVE the zoku. My sister in law got us one from lakeland and it does unbelievably make perfect lollies in just 10 mins. Its prefect for an emergency pudding… I normally wizz up a smoothie and that goes in then comes out way more exciting. Although with birthday party season about to kick off in our house I just bought one from amazon that allows you to use wooden sticks – so I was thinking they’d be better for guests than having to chase down your plastic sticks to make the next batch.
I don’t know how they’ll turn out until tomorrow but I’m trying a pretty pinterest idea and have slices of strawberries, kiwis and peaches freezing away in coconut water with a bit of elderflower so that they’re clear and show off the fruit. They look so pretty on pinterest and I might cry if mine are not so perfect.
Awww for the sorry magnum 🙁 It was my birthday yesterday and I used that for an excuse for the praline tub of icecream that’s got a bit too much missing in the freezer. Back on the healthy lolly train from tomorrow thanks to my new delivery and lolly sticks!
Happy Birthday!
I love the look of the lollies when you can see the fruit. Such a good idea. x
Hello Lauren,
thank you so much for mentioning my peanut butter ice lollies. I got inspired when I saw the new release of peanut butter cornetto, but being vegan , well healthy vegan, I had to have a go at trying my own version. If you make them do let me know what you think, I personally absolutely love these lollies
Wishing you a lovely day and once again thanks for the mention, means a lot from a blogger like you
Lots of love
