Behold, my new trainers! Despite having owned them for less than a fortnight they already feel like old friends because, well, they are exactly the same as a pair of trainers I recently retired…
Let me explain. After two years of solid service I had to finally face facts that my Nike Dunk Sky Hi Essential Leather trainers (v1) were no longer wearable in polite society (they were a bit, erm, smelly, we’ll leave it there). But I loved those trainers. With their hidden wedge they gave me at least a couple of inches of extra height (which is very important when you’re not quite 5’4”), making my legs look longer without the discomfort that comes ooh, about ten minutes after I put on a pair of heels these days.
I wasn’t prepared to live without a pair of Nike Dunk Sky Hi Essential Leather trainers in my life (I mean they’re even called Essential trainers, right?!). Cue a lengthy and increasingly frantic search to find another pair in my size, which eventually resulted in success at ASOS. Hurrah! Crisis averted.
Funny thing is Nike Dunk Sky Hi Essential Leather trainers are far from the only item of clothing I’ve bought more than once. It’s true. When it comes to buying the same thing over and over again I’m a repeat offender, guilty as charged…
I’ve lost count of the number of pairs of Havaianas flip flops I’ve bought over the years. No other flip flops come close for comfort, looks and longevity. And, while I’ve flirted with coloured and patterned versions, I always go back to black. It’s a similar but different story with Converse. I nearly always have a pair of low tops on the go. Plain white ones were always my preference, but the last two pairs I’ve owned have been animal print, like these. Well, animal prints are basically a neutral these days.
Footwear isn’t the only area of clothing where I display such an astonishing lack of originality and sense of adventure. Having discovered Topshop’s Leigh skinny jeans last year I now own three pairs, one blue, one black and one grey. Every now and again I try to break out of my self imposed clothing rut. A couple of weeks ago I tried on a pair of flared jeans in Topshop. Despite having been well into flares in my twenties pulling on a pair now felt weird. Like I was in costume. Just not me. So I bought a black pair of Leighs instead.
It seems that the older I get the increasingly risk averse I’m becoming. Perhaps it’s because I don’t buy as much new stuff as I used to and so I’m less prepared to take a punt on something that might not work out? Maybe I just have a clearer idea of what suits me and so I’m less inclined to be won over by the latest whatever it is? It is weird as someone who, for a long time, has been partial to a print, the idea of a uniform – albeit a very casual uniform in shades of black, grey, white and blue denim – is starting to appeal? What’s happening to me?! Does it even matter?! I’m not sure!
Anyone else buy the same thing over and over again? What’s your stuck on repeat buy? Moved, or at least would like to move, to a simpler aesthetic lately? As ever, do share below!
And here I was thinking I was the only one! Definitely a repeat offender, but I feel like i’ve made enough clothing mistakes in the past (looks great but uncomfortable/doesn’t fit with the rest of my wardrobe/love but just don’t wear for some unfathomable reason) that when I find something that works I stick to it. Hence the five pairs of Topship Jaimie jeans I own, the several pairs of French Sole silver loafers, Everlane t-shirts in every colour…
I like to have a fairly minimal wardrobe but I do feel like I get stuck in a rut sometimes – I wish I could be one of those people that wears something unusual and fabulous on a regular basis. But I always find myself reaching for my trusty jeans, t-shirt and jumper…
Hi Anna,
Hope you don’t mind me asking, i’ve been looking at Everyone t-shirts for a while but unsure about sizing. How do they size up? Many thanks from a French sole fanatic!!
Hi, no problem at all. I’d say their clothing is very true to size. I’m roughly a size 8 (though sometimes 6) / 32B and their “small” size t-shirts fit me great, lose but fitted. I could probably do the XS if I wanted a tight fit. Same with their jumpers. And my boyfriend wears their t-shirts and jumpers too and again finds them very true to size.
And on a side note I have one of their rucksacks and it’s a total lifesaver – fits so much, really comfy and still looks good after 18 months of heavy use. On that basis I’d recommend their non-clothing goods as well as they seem to be just as good quality!
Yay, I’m not the only one! I love the Everlane aesthetic, dream work/life uniform scenario!
I know, I just wish Everlane would sell in the UK, I have to stock up whenever I go to the states which has only been every 2 years or so. Now I’m eloping to New York this spring I’m trying to convince the boy that we should take the opportunity to mass order from them as a little wedding gift to ourselves!
I have never heard of Everlane?! Clearly a brand I need to investigate x
Yes, you definitely should Anna!
Is a US brand Charlotte with a pared back but cool aesthetic, doesn’t ship to the UK but does mention a company on the site that does ship to the UK. Like Clare I wasn’t sure of the sizing so haven’t ordered anything, but with Anna’s explanation I just might give it a whirl now! x
Repeat offender here too. I have the same style of jeans in four different colours. The same Boden Breton top in two. I’m also well know for buying ballet pumps in several different colours at the same time. I used to wear loads of different things in my late teens/early twenties, but now I feel I know what I like and what suits me and I’m sticking with it. I think I now have the mindset of if it ain’t broke don’t fix it (I also have far less disposable income now, so less to risk on disastrous fashion choices!).
Totally agree with the if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it mindset Alex!
Guilty! I’m the same with Leigh Jeans (in black/Blue/ripped/acid wash) and my converse are an essential! I have also had 4 pairs of the same pale pink Topshop ballet pumps…they go with everything and are so comfy it’s like an acceptable outdoor slipper!
Last summer I bought a pair of Birkenstocks in white – I can see those becoming a repeat purchase too!
If it ‘aint broke….!
Love me a pair of Birkenstocks too Amy! Can’t decide whether to get a white or black double strap pair for this summer…
Guilty! I bought my first pair of French Sole flats over ten years ago and will forever be a fan!
French Sole flats are fab Clare!
Same here Miranda. I also only buy haviana flip flops and have several prs of the Leigh Topshop jeans. They just fit! Also just replaced my Dune leopard print ballet shoes with another pair almost exactly the same. It makes sense when you get a bit older and you know what you like.
It sounds like we’re practically clothes twins Krysia!
Guilty! I buy these http://www.dunelondon.com/malmo-bow-trim-round-toe-ballerina-0075507510063488/ Dune animal print ballet flats every year! They only last a year (the fur wears off at the toe annoyingly) but I love them and can’t find any that come near to competing. They go with everything!
On a side note, slightly tempted by your animal print converse Miranda!
ooh Maddy I like those. Bet they go with everything! x
I love my animal print Converse Maddy, I’m on my third pair (all different prints, but still, there’s a linking theme!)
I have the same skinny twill cotton trousers in navy from Zara as I can wear them to work without them looking to jeans-like! Plus I have a massive weakness for striped tops, I have the same one in two colorways from H&M -white stripes on blue and blue stripes on white! they go with everything and can be dressed up or down!
Guilty as charged! In fact just on Tuesday I bought four of the exact same Gap t-shirt in different colours (and even three of those were alarmingly similar!). If you know what you like and what looks good, stick with it I say!
Haha, yep, I’m with you Claire, we’re not boring, we just know what works!
Guilty. 5 colours of the same skinny jeans, a new colour of the same cashmere boyfriend cardi every autumn, birkenstocks most summers since about 2004, embarrassing numbers of breton shirts and converse.
Love the sound of your uniform Rachel, it’s not dissimilar to mine tbh!
Miranda I’m so with you on the Havianas, I have a weird thing where I can’t wear thongs because the thought of anything between my toes makes me quease. The only flip flops I can even deal with are Havs.
Right this moment, the fact that I can’t find my gold tropical print pair that I bought six years ago in Croatia is currently sending me into an absolute meltdown. xx
Gold tropical print pair sound amaze Karen, I’m not surprised not being able to find them is causing you a meltdown! xx
‘It if ain’t broke don’t fix it’ comes to mind! I have bought the same item in several colours so many times when I have found something I like and it fits well, but I think I’m more brand loyal than tied to particular products now. After downsizing my wardrobe storage a few months ago I now have to be sensible when treating myself to new clothes and shoes etc. The hubby and I both live in Converse at the weekend so have to avoid having the same colours, matching his and hers isn’t the most attractive look ha ha. But I am so glad his grey Converse have finally fallen apart as I have wanted a grey pair for ages, although the leopard print ones you pointed out are very tempting..!
Haha, yes, you can be too matchy matchy Claire!
I think I am the complete opposite in this respect. I buy something once, think its great but then wonder if there is something even better out there. The upshot is there usually isn’t and therefore I wish I just bough the original item again in the first place! I’ve made countless mistakes with make up/skincare purchases and having read this article i’m now sticking to what I know. If it aint broke and all that! xxxxx
I do recommend it Hannah, the only thing is that although you’ve bought something new, it’s not exactly the same as buying something you haven’t owned before! xx
I, too, was a huge fan of Leigh and Jamie Topshop jeans but I’ve found even betters ones. These are great – lots of stretch, sooooo comfortable.

Ooh, will be giving those a try next time I’m in H&M Siobhan, thanks for the tip off!
