It might surprise you to know I really haven’t bought many clothes in the last 18 months. I didn’t bother much whilst I was expecting and since becoming a Mum I have to admit to losing my fashion mojo somewhat. Expanding on that statement might be another post entirely.
In the last few months I have ordered what feels like an entire new wardrobe online only to send 99.9% of it back. I think it’s a combination of my lack of confidence to make the right bloody decision, the realisation what I purchase needs to be more practical than perhaps it did before, and that more than ever, I am looking for a flattering fit and good quality. “Quite nice” just won’t cut it anymore. And I don’t have the time or the inclination to spend a small fortune on alterations.
Without realising it I have always had a capsule-ish approach. I’ve invested in spendy “forever” staple basics and interspersed with more fashion-y cheaper items to mix things up a bit. My problem is I buy too many of the latter and don’t give enough thought to the former.
A few weeks ago I decided to REALLY sort out my closet. I took into consideration Lauren’s “But would you buy it if you saw it now?” wisdom and actually tried most things on to decipher if they were in fact worth keeping – it was a marathon session but well worth the effort. After I had removed what turned out to be a rather scary amount of stuff, I wrote myself a wee “wish” list of pieces I desired and with my birthday approaching, booked in the diary a whole day of actual real life shopping with my husband (I can’t pretend he looked enamoured with the idea to be honest but at least he was feeling generous).
These are the things I’ve actually bought thus far and do you know what? We actually had a really nice day shopping…..although there’s no denying the promise of pancakes for brunch certainly helped build James’s enthusiasm for the trip.
The Shirt – The Kooples £110
I have been after a denim one for a while but to no avail, I do love a shirt tucked into skinny jeans and this soft blue chambray is casual in style yet fits really well around my shoulders and arms (I often find this is the area they “bag” too much). This is very versatile and looks super smart underneath a blazer or jacket.
I was very tempted to buy the silk boyfriend design but as it is decidedly “No baby” I refrained. How sensible of me.
The Jeans – All Saints Button Mast £98
I am a fan of the Topshop “Leigh” as are many of you I’m sure, but mine are beginning to look a little shabby due to general wear and tear and I wanted something that was just that little bit smarter. I LOVE these Mast jeans. They fit so well, and the button fly make them different to many other varieties. They are especially flattering on your backside.
The Trainers – Nike Internationalist £66.99
I take no credit for the discovery of these sporty shoes, my friend Maria told me I HAD to get them after bemoaning my inability to work a flat (short leg syndrome – I feel naked without some sort of heel). I have them in Dove Grey , surprise! but they go with everything, are extremely comfortable and have acquired many a “Wow love your trainers, where did you get them?” compliment in the last few weeks. I bought them from Office and like to wear them with a faux leather legging. They are also much easier to run around after Mabel in than my much loved cowboy boots.
The Blazer – Zara £79.99
I hate it when this happens, as writing this they have sold out – really sorry. This design is quite similar though. I have had my beloved Whistles black blazer for years but much like my Leigh jeans, it’s beginning to look tired. Fine for mooching about in the daytime but I needed something fancier for evening. I liked the zip detail in particular and although Zara blazers are notoriously too roomy for me, this one is nicely nipped in at the waist and the shoulder pads (yes really!) give it a great shape.
The Dress – The Kooples £165
This was a lovely surprise, my husband chose and ordered this drape jersey number all by himself. No prompt from me at all. In fact I hadn’t mentioned I needed a dress and had I seen this in store on the hanger I’m not sure I would have even tried it on. Just goes to show sometimes you have to be a bit adventurous I guess. It’s a very “pull you in” design and even though it’s a little on the short side, the 3 quarter length sleeves make it elegant enough to warrant giving your pins a decent flash. I seem to have a thing for zips right now clearly.
Has your husband/partner ever bought you a surprise item of clothing that you loved?
What have been your Spring staples?
Do you wear trainers often (not in a gym/sport capacity) – what do you like to wear with them?
I’ve been having the same train-er of thoughts! (haha at my very funny joke there) I’ve got a similar pair in my asos basket (the vintage montreal grey nikes) and can’t get them just yet as I already impulse bought some other nike hightops this month. I’ve not worn trainers in real life for years and it feels like a guilty secret that I really want to again. I’ve been sneaking in wearing gym wear with trainers on days when I’m not really going to the gym and just pretending so I probably just need to embrace it and buy the nikes. Again.
The Kooples dress is stunning. Well chosen James!
Since I bought the Nikes Amanda I’ve seen many a cool lady wearing skinnies with trainers and some kind of T/sweater…often with a cool blazer or a duster coat. My husband loves Hightops and suggested I get some when we were shopping, the thing is they make my legs look even shorter and they hide my ankles (if that makes sense!) it’s as if I need a Hightop with a low front bit?! or something! x
Mmmmm… I do love that look… and extra happy points for being actually comfy too.
Haha if I see any high-tops that are also low-tops I will let you know!
I’m also a heels girl, but living in London and being 20 weeks pregnant, I decided to get some trainers as I’ve become uncomfortable tottering around for miles. I was inspired by the cool Danish look, so purchased some navy new balance ones which I largely wear with my skinny maternity jeans, blazer and tee. Being five foot 2 and brunette I’m not sure I look quite Danish hipster, but I’m very comfortable!
Anna! I’m sure you look very Danish hipster! The navy sound lovely – I also think wearing a blazer with trainers makes the whole look much more elegant/pulled together. My faux leather leggings are so comfy, really wish I’d had them whilst I was pregnant – I bought them for £20 from Bershka x
What a lovely collection and good choice James. I know exactly what you mean, I too have been having a major meltdown when it comes to my wardrobe. I just can’t seem to find anything I like, post baby. It is either too mummsy, too young or just not flattering. I order tonnes online but most goes back. I ordered 17 items from Zara the other day and kept a t-shirt! I am finding I am struggling with where to shop too, top shop feels too young and doesn’t suit me yet whistles is lovely but too pricey for the basics. My go to’s are usually Zara and H&M, but I am just not feeling inspired at the mo. I am glad to hear I am not the only one.
Thanks Louise! I feel I have a little bit more mojo (!) I am in exactly the same camp as you – and to be honest, I was even before I had Mabel, things just seemed either too Mumsy or too young. I love Zara but whether I have some kind of weird body, the clothes just don’t tend to fit my boyish shape with sticky out bum. Probably TMI but true.
There seems to be a good choice on ASOS but there is SO MUCH choice I don’t know where to start?! x
Ha ha I am pleased for you, you will look fab.
Yes I have the same prob, I love it in there but don’t buy loads. Might need to do some investment buying and have a good shopping trip to boot. X
Louise, Whistles have a 25% off atm with Grazia… if you need an excuse to stock up on lovely basics!
Oh No Amanda! Now I will need to buy Grazia and take a look at Whistles!
Ooh good spot, thanks
Enjoying all of this, particularly The Kooples dress!
My uniform has pretty much always been T/shirt, jeans and a statement trainer. I have a pair of black Nike Air Force One’s and a pair of chrome Nike Air Max. They are a bit Kanye but I love them! (Google Nike Air Max liquid silver)
My current issue is jeans. I’m 9 weeks post baby and have pretty much regained my pre pregnancy figure but my legs are a helluva lot slimmer than they used to be so i’m having trouble finding skinny jeans which fit on the waist but are actually skinny in the leg! Even my Topshop Leighs aren’t cutting it 🙁
Fav surprise buys from the husband include a pair of black patent Christian Louboutin Pigalles and a grey McQueen skull scarf. Neither of which are getting much wear at the moment!
Wow, your husband has excellent taste! Have you tried Paige denim? they are very slim on the leg – as are some of the Kooples styles. I also have some Frame denim which are VERY tight!
Loving the “bit Kanye” reference! x
Thanks for the recs, I’ll need to work myself up to a major jean trying on expedition!
Also, saw this and thought of you 😉

THAT is GENIUS!
I absolutely need it.
🙂 x
Ooo love the Kooples dress (well done James!) and the Zara Blazer. I’m totally with you Louise, I seem to have lost my style mojo now I’m a mummy! I’m more or less back to my pre pregnancy weight, with slimmer legs due to lots of walking, but lots of extra skin on my tummy and everything I seem to try on just highlights it! I’ve never carried weight here which means nothing in my current wardrobe works! I tend to head towards Zara for tops they are cut nice and I’ve decided maxi cardis and extra thick leggings are my go to. I too have just embraced the trainer trend, much easier for running around after a bubba. I love the supergra pumps, neat and light and still fairly stylish! Seriously in need of a confidence boost! Nice to read it’s not just me!!
Also how hard is it to find a longish cream T-Shirt?! I’d honesty pay £100 for one if I could find a nice one!!
Danielle have you tried J Crew? I have quite a few T’s from there as they are a lovely longer length, also “loose” without being binbag -esque. My stomach took a good 10 months to go back to half way normal and I feel I’m made quite an effort with exercise, it’s been 12 months since I feel I can wear a few of my old favourites. I too have some Supergra! I really need to wear those more – I think I bought them too “early” and was kind of a bit “everything looks crap!!” but I bet if I tried them now they would look much better.
Gosh, I buy too many clothes and shoes I don’t wear! x
I am not sporty in anyway shape or form but love a trainer-ish shoe in the form of pale pink Supergas. Being pregnant I’ve not bothered to buy any clothes apart from some H&M skinny maternity jeans but I am tempted by some silver Supergas I saw in White Company… Better not as the washing machine broke at the weekend and I need a new car… 🙁
Victoria, our washing machine also broke at the weekend, I have no idea where to start with finding a new one that is good…value? x
Bosch for washing machines, last time I looked John Lewis were doing cash back if they could take away your old one (sorry totally not the point of the post!)
I have bought a Hotpoint one from Currys for £260 (found a £10 discount voucher online) which I think is VERY cheap & Hotpoint usually good. I wanted an 8kg one, A+++ rated and with a handwash wool cycle & quickwash – this has all that & more including a silence overnight wash and a “baby cycle” which will come in handy – do you put the baby in too?!? Ha.
Thanks Ladies! RMS is so bloody useful! x
Oh I love ALL those clothes, my wardrobe colour scheme looks very similar to this, I love a bit of navy, black & grey! I never thought to wear trainers with faux leather leggings, that would be cool (& comfy) on the school run! I must check them out. I too lost my ‘fashion’ mojo after having kids – I put on too much weight & it took a while to lose, I also couldn’t find clothes I loved anymore. Your mojo comes back eventually and I definitely prefer the more ‘sophisticated, grown up’ look I’m going for now although I still shop in Topshop for basics, skinny jeans etc. I love Whistles and Zara have it spot on at the moment for fashionable grown up pieces, it’s my current favourite shop.
Now, I’m off to buy some faux leather leggings & maybe some trainers 😉
Grainne I love my faux leather leggings so much I am actually considering investing in real ones! so spendy though…might have to wait a while!
I’m aiming for “sophisticated and grown up” too, I really must have another look at Whistles x
This is a pretty perfect post for me at the moment. I am 9 days over my due date so surely about to have a baby any day now?! But I have been contemplating what my body might look like post baby and what I’ll wear when I am stuck behind a push chair all the time! I was a heels girl before and will obviously go back to this for work and evenings, but I can’t be that berk wearing my Gwenda’s whilst trying to power walk of my baby weight!
I digress. What I meant to say is that the trainer recommendation is perfect. Just the sort of thing I am looking for to still be smart but also practical. As is the recommendation to try everything on in my wardrobe and see what I will wear now. So much of it Ihavent touched for the last 6 months that I am interested to see what I still like. Obviously this will have to wait until some months post baby.. But it’s good to have a plan!
Also, I can’t shop at Zara because I am short and curvy but think almost everywhere else on the high street is too young for me. So Kooples and Whistles will be getting a look. But where else is good for cheaper basics??
Jennifer I find H&M good for T-shirts, hand wash them if you can though – they do have a tendency to go a bit dishrag if you put them in the machine! Also have you tried Bershka? There is a store at Westfield and they are online. Nice vests/tops etc, some “younger” stuff but the basics are very much suits all. Mango also have some nice “grown up” pieces I find.
Also – oh my goodness! not long now! x
I have also recently bought the Nike Internationalist, but I went for the burgundy ones, as I am so into the oxblood colour still! http://www.office.co.uk/view/product/office_catalog/5,20/1528161775
I haven’t been sure what to wear with them so have been ‘pinning’ like crazy, and I seem to pin skinny jeans (with and without a turn-up), a plain t-shirt and a leather jacket. So I guess that’s my look!
I’ve also been hunting for a denim shirt for ages – the Kooples one looks great, thanks!
Hi Jane! Oooh love the burgundy!
The shirt is actually chambray but has a soft denim-ish look to it x
I love those trainers! x
OO I have the ‘mid’ version of the internationalist and love them. I got them in the black as I have borderline boy sized feet (8 or 9 depending on the shop!!, but weirdly and 8 in Nike..) I have worn them so much since I got them at the beginning of the year. I fell love with the liberty print version but just couldn’t justify almost £100 on trainers (they looked sooo good on too).
I’m a bit obsessed with Hush at the minute, they do loads of lovely jersey pieces and ‘lounge wear’. and lobster print PJs!!!
I must check Hush out Vicky, Miranda loves the brand. Going to check out what the “mid” version means, I am so not down with the kids!
When my friend Maria said you have to buy “The Internationalist” I got very confused having just mentioned I needed new shoes….I thought she was harping on about a book (!) 🙂 x
LOL! re the misunderstanding the shoe book thing! Basically I think a ‘mid’ is a bit lower than a high top but higher than a normal trainer. If I wear them with shorter jeans (ankle grazers) you can just see my socks!
Hush also has some excellent pineapple accessories at the minute…
Lovely choices Charlotte! Your hubby did very well on that dress! I’ve never really looked at the Kooples before but have just checked out their website – totally in love with the skirt version of your dress!
Fran I LOVE The Kooples. They had a bit off a duff run of seasons (I think maybe two seasons ago) where everything was a bit OTT and I didn’t like/buy anything but this one is AMAZING. There are about 3 dresses I want! x
Can I ask Charlotte- so the All Saints jeans come up big or small- am between sizes 10-12 and am currently living in Australia- in just wondering if I should orders size up or down?! Ta!
