Though winter is my least favourite time of year (the dark and the cold do not appeal) I absolutely adore Christmas. The rituals, the magic and the chaos of the season make it a holiday I look forward to every year.
I usually start gathering present ideas around mid September and by the end of October generally have a few pressies ticked off my rather large list.
The house is customarily decked from the 1st December and the tree follows soon after. With friends and family spread far and wide, the celebrations tend to span over a long period and to be honest from the minute the calendar flips over to December the goodwill and merriment begin.
I was feeling rather smug with myself last month as I bought my sister a present I know she will love. Invariably she’s always first on the list as she often receives a gift I really want for myself but don’t feel I can justify. When I showed my Mum she remarked it would make a great house-warming present instead so now I have precisely zero pressies purchased and no ideas what to buy anyone. This is a first for me and I feel a bit panicked. I realise there’s more to Christmas than giving and receiving but you wouldn’t think this was the case considering the large amount of brochures and catalogues dropping on my door mat this week.
I used to work in retail so I understand why Christmas related paraphernalia makes an appearance in August. However vital it is to the economy it did feel exceptionally early this year. Last week families were doing the annual pumpkin trail at a country house near me dressed in shorts. It was THAT warm. This unseasonably mild weather has completed flummoxed my plan for an organised Christmas and I am in complete denial that there are only two paydays before the big day.
Miranda’s birthday falls at the end of November and for her Christmas doesn’t kick in until December so I realise there’s no reason to feel pressured I’m running behind on my usual schedule. How long do you really need to do your Christmas shopping?
Speaking of schedule we do have lots of festive content planned for you over the next few weeks including DIY’s, recipes and gift guides so I’m hoping I’ll get in to the Christmas swing of things very soon. The fact I had to scrape my car window yesterday and spent most of the morning infatuated with #montythepenguin suggests I’m getting closer. We’ll be kicking off next week with a discussion post about how you decide where you’ll be eating your turkey dinner on the big day.
We would love to hear from you about your views on the start of Christmas period. Have you had your presents wrapped since the beginning of September or are you more of a last minute kind of gal? When do you usually deck the halls and put the tree up?
Also please feel free to drop us a comment if there’s any particular festive topics you would like to see covered over the next couple of months.
I’m feeling very under prepared this year! Having just got married in September, my wife and I have been enjoying married life and enjoying not saving money, only to find christmas sneaking up on us. Usually by now I’ve brought all the presents for the children on the list and for my bestie, organised the food shops and etc… So far I have one present… Eeeeek!!! This year could be a little bit of a rush…
Congratulations on getting married Gracie!
You have one more present than me so you’re far more prepared. x
I like to get on top of it during November if I can so that December is reserved for fun. my husband and I both have birthdays just before Christmas so I prefer to celebrate rather than spend weekends trailing round the shops. I know what I’m buying for a lot of my list but am just waiting for special offers to kick in such as the Boots extra Advantage points event. I also have stuff in my Amazon basket which I’ll order in December so it doesn’t clutter up the house for too long.
I am a bit indecisive over what to get my 2 year old, he loves vehicles but we have lots now so want to get him something different.
I also need to sort out my Christmas day outfit, think I will hang on for a discount day for that shopping trip.
finally I need ideas for my husband, I usually buy him clothes but it’s difficult as he is 6’4″ so needs extra long everything!
Kathryn, if you do get any ideas for hubby please share, paddy is 6’6” so I completely understand!
What tall men you both have 😉 x
My hubby although not as tall as yours (6′ 2 or 3” (can never remember!)) has long arms!!! So difficult to buy for too!
M&S Big & Tall does have some nice things if you pick through the dowdyness.
I like your style Kathryn, you’ve inspired me to blitz my shopping in one month.
Love the sound of all these vehicles your son has. I’ve got visions of MTV cribs but for kids! x
we have several fire engines, a bin lorry, aircraft hangar…I’m thinking expanding into construction vehicles next.
we do find that scandi brands like H&M offer best tall fit for my long other half.
I have to leave everything to the last minute because otherwise I get too excited and tell everyone what gifts they’re getting.
With A LOT going on this year I haven’t given it much thought yet but your reminder that there are only 2 paydays until Christmas is the kick I need to start!
I am so bloody excited about Christmas! We bought a new house this year and my very small family are coming to spend Christmas with us and I cannot wait!
So far, I have my eye on purchasing these festive Christmas toy sacks for everyone as a surprise – http://www.cathkidston.com/cath-kidston/christmas-house-placement-toy-sack-1012820?gclid=CPut-d-K6MECFQQIwwodsxIA3w
In our new house we have a lovely large hallway which I really want to decorate so tips on doing this would be very welcome! Decorations will be up at ours from 1 December and my husband has kindly said I can have one festive discussion with him a week before then..
You made me laugh when you said you’re allowed one festive discussion.
It’s so exciting hosting Christmas and those sacks look awesome. I bought my niece a really cute rustic one from the £1 shop last year (slightly less glamorous) and she loved it.
I love Christmas and am normally very organised. I always make my Christmas cake mid October and by Mid November I am usually half way through my present buying. There is always a last minute rush though. This year will be slightly different though. We are not making our usual long trip up North to spend the holiday with family. It will be just the two of us at home (for the first time ever!), I’m both excited and nervous (what if it is just like any other day!!!). We are then hosting a dinner for 6, a couple of days later (again, another first) so I am really planning around that.
Yey for new traditions Alex, your Christmas sounds lovely x
The first time I did that with my ex, he moaned the ENTIRE december that it was going to be the most boring christmas ever and it was actually super-fun. I love having a quiet christmas as long as I’ve got other stuff planned for the holiday, otherwise, you end up with cabin fever!!
I LOVEthis time of year, I’m such a winter girl, I like nothing more then wrapping up warm and walking the dog, and then come home to a warm, cosy house! Oh and let’s not forget hot chocolate! My husbands birthday is next week, so for us Christmas starts then. However, we do have a rule that we do not decorate until two weeks before the big day!
I would also like to see hallway ideas, except my hallway is very narrow and I wouldn’t want to spend too much, but would still like something chic!
P.S I cried at the new John Lewis advert…
I don’t think you were the only one to shed a tear Lizzie 😉
I’ll see what I can do on the hallway ideas x
Love this post! I am such a Christmas fan…I’ve already started to listen to christmas songs on my commute, read a Christmas book in bed last night and am starting the campaign to get my bf to watch a christmas film asap. As soon as the John Lewis advert arrives, it’s Christmas in my eyes. I love Monty! The 2011 advert will always be the best in my eyes though…the little boy who is so excited for Christmas, but it’s to give his presents not to receive. Still makes me well up! I would love a RMS Christmas gift guide for all the usual categories – parents, bf’s, husbands, in laws, brothers and sisters etc. I haven’t bought any yet and now I’m slightly panicking. Although my hampers are coming on a treat with all the ideas I’m getting from RMS (thank you!!). Other posts that would be great….one on wrapping paper?! (Seriously). I love wrapping christmas gifts – I spend an evening with a christmas film on and some mulled wine doing them all in one go. Ideas for great paper, and creative things to do would be great. Also, would love a discussion post on what people do on the day itself – I love hearing about people’s traditions…what they eat for breakfast on the day, when they have lunch, when they go for a walk etc. Christmas is the best. I think I need to calm down and start blabbering on now. x
Sian you’re making me feel very excited! Your enthusiasm is catching.
Thanks for all the good ideas for features – your wish is my command on the gift wrap front – I bought a few rolls last night for an upcoming post. x
Knew you would be all over the christmas wrapper paper Lauren! x
I love wrapping so much I offer to do other people’s for them. I like to think I’m the Jane Means of Shropshire!
Please can you do mine too Victoria? the novelty wears off after I’ve wrapped the first present x
God yes please! Send them over! Its really sad but I actually cannot wait to get wrapping. I have to restrain myself from doing it all too early
I order all my gift wrap and a few decoration things in the January sales and then label it all in a big box in the loft and leave a note of my purchases on my calendar so I dont forget what I bought and buy it all again.
I ADMIT to starting my shopping in October but I actually start it in July. Partly I love it and do get too excited… but also it spreads the cost and the stressy part of it. My children have 15 cousins… buying presents for babies through to teenagers of varying ages and who you only see maybe once or twice a year is just a bit overwhelming. My wardrobe is stuffed full of wrapped presents (I regret that bit) and I have actually done most of it… though I’ve a few lovely books on my list for a few people that I will leave until last minute just incase they end up ruined by being on the Tesco 2 for £10 best sellers section when I bought them months ago thinking it was a thoughtful unique and quirky find!
The storage is getting ridiculous though… I’ve made my mum some lovely Liberty print cushions, made some giant cloud cushions for my children and I’m mid sewing Niema a tipi… I may need to hire a storage unit :S
No matter how early I plan it all though I NEVER know what to get my dad. He is impossible. Any ideas for the man who buys everything according to which reviews from 14 different countries and have their DVDs catalogued with their own spreadsheet!!??
Blimey what a list Amanda, no wonder you have to be so organised!
And a tipi? Amazing! x
But I completely agree with all all the giddiness posted above and want you to do posts on EVERYTHING!!! And oh my goodness I alternated sobbing at both the John Lewis and Waitrose advert last night… and then at remembering spreadsheet man from last years Sainsburys one
I LOVE the spreadsheet man. Though the bit when the Dad returns from Afghanistan gets me every time.
I haven’t see the Waitrose one yet. I’m checking YouTube out now… x
Just had to watch the Afghanistan one again. Crying at my desk! Ah, Christmas….
I have a 10 year old girl obsessed with baking and an 8 year old boy who talks to his little grey rabbit all the time since his real pet rabbit died last year… he even looks like the boy on the adverts… its like they designed them just to break me!! The spreadsheet man is basically my dad too (except my mum has dinner with him)
Sian you are brilliant! If you are ever near Sheffield you are officially excited enough to join our Christmas planning club – involves lots of coffee and notebooks and only the most enthusiastic allowed 😀 Today is advent parcel day … 24 managable activities to put in the calendar and somehow wrapped in parcels. Eeek!!
This planning club sounds the best thing ever!! I wish I lived near Sheffield. Maybe I can start my own London based one, although I think some of my friends think I’m a little Christmas crazy. One of the activities could be paper cut outs for a gingerbread house? I made one last year and it was loads of fun…although I got overly competitive with nieces and nephews making it. Oops. BBC website has sample cut outs you can print! (I still haven’t calmed down…) x
Great idea thanks Sian… I’ve struggled for so many years to think up enough crafts but free printables are all over the internet more than I’ve ever seen before – or maybe its just that this year they seem like actual good ones!
Deffo start your own Christmas club – you will most certainly be labelled crazy but you filter out the half hearted and it draws in lots of like minded Christmas crazy people… then you get to spend November and December happy. 🙂 My friend Julia used to think we were a little crazy but was intregued and went with it. She now has Christmas bedding sets and everything.
I tend to be organised but this year, with 4 weeks to go until our wedding (eek!) Christmas is going to the bottom of the list! I have picked up some things for our nieces and nephew but everyone else will be getting a bottle of gin in duty free on the way back from Vietnam!
Fabulous idea Marianne and massive congrats on the upcoming nuptials.
I absolutely LOVE Christmas! All the parties, food, mulled wine, family and festiveness. Cant wait to get making mince pies.
Each year I beg my hubby for a bigger tree. We actually NEED it as I add to decorations each year. I find Sainos amazing for tree decs – last year got some gorgeous glass baubles with feathers in.
I have a christmas notebook to record all the presents I have and usually dig it out about now. I’ve already bought quite a bit but can’t remember (!) so I’m going to have to brave the very full cupboard and climb in for a root.
Men are always hard to buy for and I find most shopping websites just have the same boring old gift ideas – booze, socks, chocs, novelty tat. Which although some are useful lets face it are dull. So please RMS some gift buying posts would be amazing – thank you in advance 😉
I’m with you on Sainbury’s decorations. They have some super cute ones in there.
We will try our best to make the gift guides exciting. The pressure is on! x
Christmas this year should be lots of fun as Molly is old enough to understand Father Christmas and Alice will bumble around as usual. Mind you have a feeling Molly may be disappointed Xmas morning as she has said she is having a puppy (she’s not!) and doesn’t know whether to have a white or yellow one!!! We’ve got a lot of the girls presents to spread the cost and as its Mollys bday at the end of Nov plus copious days in Dec. Love a bit of late night shopping with a hot chocolate stop. I’ve got three brothers and sisters, all with other halves now, so we just pick one person and spend a larger sum on them rather than trying to get lots of bits and pieces. Then a nice experience for the parents. Think tea at the Ritz is on the list this year. Wrapping the presents is my favourite and I probably spend longer choosing the paper than the presents! I have to sit down and watch santa claus the movie (old school one) and wrap away. So any suggestions on the best papers and wrapping ideas would be much appreciated. Oh and Christmas table decorations for the big day please seen as I’m hosting! xxx
Christmas table decorations are on the shoot list for next week Mrs Manns! How many are you hosting for?
Buying for just one family member is such a good idea and far less stressful. x
Think there will be 12 of us plus the 2 munchkins! Did the same last year and it was fine as luckily I have a huge double oven plus my mum cooked one of the turkeys at hers and bought it over wrapped in tea towels! (don’t ask, hubby got carried away with a goose and ham!). Looking forward to these table decorations and may pinch some ideas! x
I’d love to see some Christmas gift guides please (does anybody else HATE trying to find something that isn’t naff for £10 and under secret santa pressies?) – and more decor posts than you can shake a (festive) stick at!
I’m relatively organised this year. I’ve bought most of the presents for my two girls (and ordered my turkey!) but haven’t started thinking about anybody else. Plenty of time though, Christmas definitely doesn’t begin until December and I don’t decorate the house until we’re a couple of weeks in.
Oh god the £10 price limit. I feel your pain! We’ll see what we can do x
Bloody hell! I love this community, 9.30am and already so many comments!
I am officially crap at being organised for Christmas. Every year I have the best intentions, see lovely wrapping paper, pretty crackers etc…..and then say ‘Oh I’ll get them next week”
Then I don’t.
This year with Mabel it’s going to be different. I’ve already bought her a few gifts and yesterday I ordered James a lovely jumper from Zara man. Feeling very pleased with myself indeed! x
I usualluy try and hold off until December, when I go ALL OUT, bigtime. Decorations, presents, food, wrapping. This year, we’re due a Christmas present of an entirely more human kind (I’m due between Xmas and New Year) and rather than stress and panic I’ve found myself unusually zen-like, perhaps because I have the perfect excuse to be a bit lax!
We’ll still go to town on the decorations though. A couple of years ago I invested in some timeless Toast and Cox & Cox decorations and every year at the start of December we visit the tree plantation up the road where the atmosphere is magical (aided by the homemade sloe gin on offer). Once the tree is in situ I spend an afternoon unwrapping all of my treasures and indulgently taking hours to position them. I like to wrap my presents once the tree is up; THAT’S when it feels like Christmas to me.
And TOP TIP, ‘A Very She and Him Christmas’ album is officially the most perfect soundtrack to these yuletide activities….
Not long to go now Philipa!
This tree plantation sound perfect. What aa lovely way to spend an afternoon x
My husband and his family are complete Christmas nuts – so much so they kick-off the Christmas season on 1st November each year with a day of Christmas films, cookies, beers and chilli con carne. As we live in the UK and his family are in America, we try to honour this tradition ourselves (which we are doing tomorrow all day) and although it is a bit cheesy, there is something nice about carrying on the tradition and getting into the festive spirit, even as a cynical Brit! Plus it gives me the excuse to watch “The Holiday”! That said, I’m in no bit prepared for gifts/food or anything practical until midway through December.
I’d love to see some ideas on the blog for decorating the home for the festive season; my decorations never quite turn out the way I’d like to so any DIY posts or just pretty shiny things would be fab! x
I love Kate Winslet’s cottage in The Holiday! You’ve made me want to watch too. Have a great day celebrating tomorrow. x
I bloody love Christmas! I always tell myself that I won’t think about Christmas until after Halloween, but that’s just a lie. I’m going to the States for Christmas and New Year and have been in a Christmassy mood ever since I booked the flights in June!
I’m generally sorted presents wise – although I haven’t bought them yet, my annual Christmas spreadsheet contains every.single.detail. On top of suitcase friendly presents, I’ve decided I must have a capsule wardrobe to take with me (obviously to make more room in my suitcase for presents and nothing at all to do with wanting lots of new clothes for Texan winter!) To make things complicated/harder my boyfriend isnt coming with me, so I have to make sure presents are packed up in a logical way and labeled clearly so he takes the right presents to the right people! He will also have a notebook listing each gift which he can have with him in Christmas Day so doesn’t look bewildered as he is thanked!
The thing I’m stressing about the most is wrapping! I cannot find wrapping paper I like this year! So any help on that front would be much appreciated! Cannot wait to sit on the floor with the fire on, mulled wine and a Christmas Classic on TV. The tree ritual usually happens on the 1st December, but I’m thinking that I can get away with putting it up early as I’m not going to see it for two weeks… That’s logical right?! As soon as the florist has one I’m buying it!
I’m definitely going to make mulled wine tonight.
Loving the level of organisation Kate! Your Christmas sounds like it’s going to be fabulous over in the US.
I have done so much shopping already, I work in a museum and my salary is pitiful so I normally start buying presents in September so it spreads the damage over a few pay cheques. I use ebay a lot and have bought some wonderful things thus far:
Grown your Own Grape Vine Kit for wine lovers

And I am making Nigella’s Chocolate Pistachio Fudge and putting it in these cute christmassy cellophane bags

Ooooh pistachio fudge. Delicious x
As much as I love Christmas when it actually gets to it, I really have great loathing for the build up…! I have already spotted two fully decorated trees in neighbours flats….
I’m a December baby and so is my Dad (8th & 21st respectively) and my mum was always very keen to keep our birthdays separate from Christmas, so the tree wouldn’t even go up until the 23rd. It’s become such a tradition, that I do the same! I think I enjoy it far more because I’m less likely to get bored of it!
In terms of gift buying I’m usually very organised and tend to blitz it in November. This year though, I haven’t even given it a thought! We’ve just moved flat and spent a fair bit on new furniture, so that is basically an early present to ourselves. We’re also not seeing family until after Christmas so Christmas Day itself will be just the two of us!
Christmas itself is not complete for me until I’ve been to Midnight Mass. And I also go all out on Christmas Eve with food (even just for the two of us) to celebrate Swedish Christmas (I’m half Swedish so not completely random!) My mum does it far better, but it’s again another tradition I like to continue. Plus, as a kid I got to open all my Swedish pressies on Christmas Eve – best thing ever!
Two fully decorated trees Jo? This is an outrage.
Love that you get to open pressies on Christmas Eve. I bet it feels dead naughty 😉
I’ve had my Christmas pudding made for 4 weeks and it’s currently wrapped up tightly at the bottom of our pantry!
I need serious gift ideas please, particularly reasonably priced in the £10 – £20 bracket that would be suitable to Grandparents.
We’re planning to have two trees this year and would like some ideas for a decor theme for the second tree. We have creamy gold and regal purple (handblown glass baubles) and would like something a bit different but still complimentary… I quite like the mercuried glass look and have seen some really nice copper effect/coloured decs too.
Also, Christmas cocktails or tips for hosting an easy to put together Christmas drinks, with nibbles etc. Man alive, I have a lot of ideas but I’ll leave it there, don’t want to inundate you.
Oh wait, a really important one – stylish table setting and centre pieces for the main event – Christmas lunch. I want our table to have wow factor and don’t have anything yet – need the lot: table linen, candle sticks, place mats etc etc
xxx
Frantically writing a list here Kitty, we will definitely try our best to help you out x
Sounds amazing to me already Kitty, can I be invited to your Christmas ?
We’ll see Marine, I had to ask my mum what size turkey I need to order, got no idea. It’s going to be manic, as my hubster’s birthday is on Christmas day so once Xmas lunch is all done and cleared away I’ve got to set up for Al’s birthday tea and get the birthday gear out!
hahaha it will be a military operation!
Last one, promise – anyone know where I can buy really pretty Christmas crackers that have a hat only, so I can put my own little gifts inside. I’m fed up of the random tat you get inside Christmas crackers so want to write my own notes and find personalised little treasures to put inside!
(It’s my first time hosting Christmas so am going a bit mad!)
Hi Kitty, Wilko often have ‘make your own’ cracker sets x
John Lewis also had them last year xx
Hi Kitty. I made my own crackers last year. They looked so pretty but perhaps didn’t have much ‘snap’. I got the kits from hobby craft and then used beautiful handmade paper and pretty ribbons, tiny baubles etc to decorate them. It was nice to choose individual pressies but did get a bit pricey! This year I am stealing Laurens animal jar idea but spraying the lids copper and gold and filling with homemade truffles and treats. xx
Ooh Charlotte I’m stealing that idea as well for Niemas birthday at Easter but doing a similar things with penguins and polar bears on the inside of jars to make snow globes for an advent craft! What a fab idea to use for Christmas favours though!
Kitty we’ve done the hobbycraft AND john lewis cracker kits and even some from Sainsburys, although those were a bit more ‘kiddy’ So easy though to make your own covers and add in the hats and snaps from the kits and then if you are putting gifts in you can make them a bit bigger if they need to be. Can’t believe you have to fit a birthday and a Christmas into just one day!!!
This year, with 10 billion other things going on, Christmas buying will take precisely two days. I’m going to do the whole lot in one go and then that will be that! This is not my usual tactic; normally beginning my shopping in November but like you said, how long do you actually need?! We are also on a very minimum spend budget this year having bought a dilapidated house so that also makes things slightly easier! You will be lucky to get a Satsuma Lauren 😉 xx
You’re not getting anything so far so you will be spoiling me with a satsuma x
I cannot wait for the discussion about where you’ll be eating your turkey dinner on the big day. This is my favourite topic! Such a controversial topic in so many families so any tip on how to handle it without creating a family drama will be great!
I would love to read about decoration ideas. My Christmas tree is THE BEST in the world every year, however I never know how to decorate the rest of the house without it to be too tacky…
Oooh Marine you’ll have to share a few pics of your Christmas tree.
I LOVE Christmas and look forward to lots of posts about it! I bought a few presents last month which is vg for me, bought another one yesterday but there’s still loads to buy.
I have asked twice now if it’s too early to start watching Christmas films, the consensus being yes it is.
I’ve realised I have loads of Christmas wrapping from last year as it’s about to topple from the top shelf of the walk in. I always buy new wrapping paper but surely nobody is going to turn round and say hang on a second you gave us a present wrapped in this very paper last year!
Surely it’s not too early now Lynn? The TV ads are on so it must be time for Elf?
As a result of this post I’ve got my husband to agree to sit down with me tonight to start making a present plan because I’m feeling disorganised after reading this post. Although my husband and I made a plan for what we are actually going to do on Christmas day, the first one on our own, in July!
Sorry Sarah, hopefully we’ve got you in a festive mood too x
Would anyone like me to share my Xmas pressie budget spreadsheet? It has conditional formatting which turns the row green when you’ve bought that person’s presents? ( I love spreadsheets, had loads for our wedding as well!)
This sounds exceptionally fancy Kitty 😉
It’s kicking in for me this week. I did the bulk of ordering present online this week and will start the wrapping when they arrive next week. I have only got to get my parents a couple of small pressies and buy for the husband (no idea what to get) after pay day. I get the shopping done early so I have more money to enjoy myself with over Christmas and in the sales of course
Well done Claire. Super envious that you’re almost done.
[…] Lauren mentioned in this post last week, with an end-of-November birthday I don’t tend to start thinking about Christmas […]
