I love October. Autumn is one of my favourite seasons and October sees it get well and truly going. All crunchy leaves and steaming hot chocolates and conkers and thick luxurious knits. Plus there’s a tonne of things happening this month that I’m really very much looking forward to.
- Firstly Hector turns two this month. TWO! I can scarcely believe it myself; it seems like he’s been with us forever yet the last twenty four months have passed in the blink of an eye. We’re not entirely sure what we’ll be doing on the day itself but both Ste and I will be taking some time out with Hector to either visit Thomasland or see the monkeys at Trentham. I also intend to make him a birthday cake complete with Happy Birthday bunting.
- It’s also my wedding anniversary in a few weeks which you’ll already be aware of if you read my post yesterday asking for your recommendations on what to do whilst we’re away in London. Ste and I are very much looking forward to a night away celebrating four years of marriage. That said I know we’ll spend half the night talking about Hector.
- October also marks the start of real progress at the house; cue long squeal of excitement from me. We have electricians, plumbers, window fitters, carpenters and hard landscapers all booked in to start work from the middle of the month. Granted I know there might be a delay of perhaps a week or so if the weather is bad or if they overrun on a previous job but it’s so good to know that some real changes are going to be made at some point in the next few weeks.
- Halloween is almost upon us! I love Halloween and I’m tempted to get Heccy dressed up this year to go trick or treating (albeit it just to those houses of people we know). I have a feeling that he’s just that little bit too young though. He’d make an awesome pumpkin though…speaking of which I can’t wait to carve this year’s gourd. It’s a bit of a family tradition to come up with weird and wonderful designs and I’m hoping to keep my crown of ‘Master Carver’.
- I’ve had a really thrilling year in the garden growing lots of vegetables successfully for the first time. I can’t wait to sit down later this month and really take stock of what vision I want to create at our new house and what plants I want to grow. I’ll be nurturing some plants over the winter in the greenhouse so that we have a headstart come Spring but I’ll be taking the opportunity this month to place some big seed orders. Honestly I’m like a kid at Christmas!!
What have you lovely lot got planned for October? Are you excited for Autumn, for Halloween and for the upcoming Fireworks night? Why not share what you’re up to in the comments below…
Hi lolly
I absolutely love October too… Autumn is just the best!
Could you perhaps share your thoughts on how to prepare the garden for Spring/ what you’ll be ordering? Would love to get a head start but have no idea where to begin!! Thank you!!
Hi Nicky
Leave it with me and I’ll talk to the team about scheduling a post in covering just this for you xx
Ooh Lolly, I’d also love a garden post, with perhaps a quick roundup of which veggies worked for you this year? We’ve made a vegetable bed for the first time this year and I’d love some tips on what worked/didn’t work for you! xxx
Seconding the garden prep for Spring request!
And me, I’m determined 2017 will become the year I master gardening!
Optimistic bulb plantings, bright morning sunlight, even raking leaves off the lawn. The first nip of frost. The last blackberries. Waving off the swallows. Lighting candles. Prepping a Mexican feast for Dia de los Muertos. Listening to Van Morrison’s Moondance by firelight.
And no longer relying on the sodding immersion and getting the central heating back! Builders…
Ooh I would also love a gardening post! We moved into a house with a garden last year after 9 years in a garden-less flat! We have absolutely no idea what we are doing with regards to plants so a Spring ‘What to plant’ post would be great! So far we have some herbs in pots which look lovely and some Acer plants which are being savaged by slugs.
Moving onto Halloween – I can’t wait! Noah is 2 and I was also thinking about taking him trick or treating but only to his little friends houses round the corner. When looking round the Haloween section in the supermarkets however, he looks totally terrified at all the ghastly decorations and masks! I have to quickly zoom over to the outfits and distract him which cute pumpkin costumes. Perhaps he’s too young still?! K X
I am loving the smell of autumn! Leaves are starting to fall, there’s a chill in the air, the boots are already out from under my bed (and have been worn). I am beyond excited. The changing of the season is the best. I can ‘t wait to get out all my chunky knits and scarves. I would also love a planting post. Hubby to be and I are hoping to buy a house with a big garden soon and have we have big plans on growing veg and all sorts, but have never done it before. Also, I can now say I’m getting married this month! Woo hoo! After twelve and a half years being together, five of those engaged, it is finally happening 🙂
Amy xx
