Apparently, the average British woman will stay with her Hairdresser longer than her husband*.
I heard this on the radio the other day and wondered if this was true for you too? As I haven’t been married that long it’s understandable that I’ve been going to my Stylist for a longer period of time.
In my lifetime I have had more styles than you would have thought possible and usually have a full restyle every six months. Despite never having hair longer than my shoulders (I am so envious of those who can do a top knot), I’ve embraced a whole host of styles (including the asymmetric undercut…) and tried pretty much every colour, though many of them have been unintentional.
[ezcol_2third id=”” class=”” style=“”]My hairdresser is the lovely Paul and I’ve been a regular in his chair for the last five years or so. He came highly recommended by two friends and I decided to give his salon a whirl after the two hour trip to my Sheffield salon quite frankly became unmanageable.
Having hair of the shorter variety, I visit the salon every six to eight weeks and so probably see my Hairdresser more than most. The first man I saw on my wedding morning wasn’t my Dad, it was Paul. He’s the man I’ve had Board Room debriefs with rushing from important meetings to evening hair appointments, the man who probably knows more details of my marriage than my best friend and the man who always offers me the best chocolate biscuits. Paul loves the fact that I often tell him to do what he likes with the scissors and give him full creative control. Usually this goes to plan.
I realise though that not everyone shares such a love affair with their Stylist and I’ve had a few horror stories in my search for a hairdresser too. I’ve had scissors jammed in my neck, my scalp scorched by over zealous blow dryers and more lopsided fringes than I’d care to mention.
So, is this stat true for you too? How long have you been with your Hairdresser? How did you find them and do you have any hair horror stories to share?

* Research by NetVoucherCodes.co.uk in November 2013 revealed that while the average marriage lasts just 11 years and six months, most British women stay with their Stylist for 12.4 years.
Finding that perfect partnership can take time though as the average women spends 1.8 years looking for the right Hairdresser.

My hairdresser left my go-to salon and I ended up going to someone new and ended up with the worst haircut ever. Like a “Rachel” 3 years after it was cool and with terrible (and different thickness) layers on either side. I only went in for a trim. I cried for a week.
My long-term hairdresser now has a salon at home but does restricted hours and with my manic schedule I felt awful for constantly changing things/essentially messing her about at the last minute. I now go to a girl who she trained and is very good, and just about fit things in (plus I can change things and know someone else will take my place so I don’t feel so bad!)
I found colour more of an issue on a whole than cut (although I have boring cuts – so maybe that’s why it doesn’t matter who does it generally) – you wouldn’t think anyone could cock up bleach would you? well they…can!
I’ve also had stripes. And canary yellow roots with ashy blonde middle bits. Also after a recommendation for “caramel” (apparently it would break up the blonde) I had some sexy orange sections that made my skin look a weird shade of beige.
If my current hairdresser/colourist left I’m not sure what I would do!
I cried when I got my ‘Rachel’. My hairdresser at the time didn’t really get what I was asking for and so it was more like a ‘Racquel’….
I have had the same person cut my hair for 26 1/2 years (aside from my Mum no-one else has every cut my hair), and I am not married yet! So it would certainly take a long time for my marriage stat to over take my hairdressing stat…
I have deceptively thick hair and my hairdresser knows exactly how to take the weight out of it and style it how I like. That said I haven’t had many radical style changes (my choice entirely) so have never had any reason to move to another hairdresser. I even used to wait to be home from uni so I didn’t have to find someone else. Talk about stuck in my ways, huh xx
I’m with you there Emma, it takes so long for a hairdresser to understand your hair its a massive chore to change. Twenty-six years is very impressive 🙂 x
Charlotte your comments made me howl with laughter and nod my head in agreement! I too have had yellow roots with ashy mid lengths; I even had some rather fetching horizontal stripes appear 9 weeks before my wedding(!) when my hairdresser let the apprentice help, which was a particular highlight, if you’ll excuse the pun! My hairdresser has cut and coloured my hair for 9 years and he’s the only person I trust to do so. He’s seen me through uni, two serious boyfriends and a career change. I think I would cry and have a toddler style, foot-stomping meltdown if he ever left.
Congrats on the new website, it is fab and I love it just as much as I love RMW! Xx
Glad you like it pet 🙂
And um…9 weeks before your wedding?! I would’ve had a nervous breakdown. I actually have nightmares about having yellow hair, I hoard bottles of my purple shampoo in case they ever discontinue it one day.
If they did I might never leave the house.
My hairdresser has been cutting my hair since i was 2 years old as thats where my mum went, i am now 33. I wouldn’t trust anyone else to cut and colour my hair. i dread the day when she gives up! xx
Wow that must be a record, 31 years!!!!
I’ve moved around a fair bit but by far the absolutely worst thing about moving for me is finding a new hairdresser. I’ve only been going to my current salon for a few months but so far so good. Fingers crossed it continues!
Fingers crossed Sarah! I had to try a fair few before I found my current hairdresser.
Ugh, I am in between-stylists hells right now. My lovely girl that I used to go to selfishly decided not to come back from maternity leave so I got another woman at the same salon to cut it. I now have a Rachel and I HATE IT!! (aside – how can asking for a blunt bob and showing several pictures of blunt bobs be interpreted as a Rachel??!!)
Must now go through 6-12 months of triel and error 🙁
What is it with the “Rachel’s” anyway?! My hair was never EVER made for that cut!!!
Liking the blunt bob idea very much though 🙂
