Earlier in the year in the comments section to a workwear round-up of clothes that were appropriate for a casual office (here if you missed it) several of you asked for a smarter edit.
And so for Lynsey, Ann-Marie, Jo, Sian, Emma, Clare and all of you who can’t get away with jeans for the office, here’s a selection of smarter buys. As requested I’ve looked for dresses and skirts with hems that are close to the knee as opposed to just covering the bum and there’s a pair of trousers to keep you warm until spring has sprung. I hope you like them!
Pinstripe jacket £85, dress, £70, trousers, £48 & pencil skirt £45, all Warehouse
Any one of these blue pinstripe pieces would sharpen up your work wardrobe. Buy all four and you’ve instantly got six work outfits that would cover most work scenarios from meetings with VIPs (dress on its own or dress + jacket), desk based days (pencil skirt + jacket + top or pencil skirt + top or trousers + jacket + top) or dress down Fridays (trousers + top).
Buy the jacket here, the dress here, the trousers here and the pencil skirt here.
Dress, £49.99, Mango
This dress would look great paired with a black or white tailored jacket or a fine knit cardigan for work, and equally good with a leather biker jacket on a night out or on the weekend. When the weather gets warmer (assuming you don’t work in one of those offices where the air con is turned up to arctic) ditch the jacket and wear it with smart sandals.
You can buy it here
Flat shoes, £22, heeled courts, £35, both Oasis
If your work wardrobe consists mostly of black, grey and white pieces (guilty) why not add a pop of colour with your shoes? Oasis has you covered whether you prefer flats (the Imie Flat Point) or heels (the Cassie Court) both of which have a suede-like finish and come a variety of colours.
You can buy the flats here and the courts here.
Sleeveless jackets, £45, Topshop & £39.99 Mango
A surprisingly versatile addition to your wardrobe, I’ve spotted people around the office wearing sleeveless jackets on top of either a slim fit fine knit jumper or a sharp shirt, with tailored trousers. For an evening look you could wear it on its own with wide tuxedo trousers, and for the weekend it would work with a pretty Victorian blouse and blue jeans. Buy the Topshop one here and the Mango one here.
Jacket, £69.99, Zara
Lighten up all the black and dark grey pieces in your work wardrobe just in time for spring with this off-white jacket. If such a pale jacket isn’t practical for your job Zara has are lots of options that are darker in colour, but just as covetable.
You can buy it here.

I bought a sleeveless jacket / waistcoat thing about two years ago from Marks and Spencer’s Limited Edition range – it’s brilliant over my silky work shirts on a fat day!
You were so ahead of the trend Pamela!
Thanks Miranda! Would have never thought of a sleeveless jacket – v clever! I’m currently on an update-my-work-wardrobe spree (withy the intention of making it my potential interview wardrobe…). Bought a lovely wee dress from the M&S petite section this weekend, but it’s too small (damn my normal sized torso & hobbit legs!) So I’ll definitely check these lovelies out!
It’s a look I’m really loving when I see it around the office Lynsey! How annoying that the M&S dress didn’t work. Hope you find some things that do work (and good luck with the interviews!)
Ooh. 😀 I love and want all of the Warehouse stuff and the Mango dress!
If I’m splashing out on a nice work dress for the important meetings and interviews, I love the stuff from Hobbs. I bought a similar dress to this one recently, which I love and is now on sale! http://www.hobbs.co.uk/product/display?productID=0214-5035-3821L00&productvarid=0214-5035-3821L00-IVORY%20BLACK-8&refpage=dresses
That dress is very sophis Kate and the whole dress-that-looks-like-a-top-and-skirt is something I’m seeing more and more. Happy you liked the Mango dress and Warehouse pieces. I’m definitely going to try the Warehouse trousers next time I pass a store! The other pieces are a bit smarter than I need right now.
Ohhh I like the sleeveless jacket / waistcoat. Lots of great things here. I’m currently updating my work wardrobe….I work from home but needing to be in the office a little more at the moment and I can’t keep ‘recycling’ the same outfits as I used to!
I am liking the sleeveless jacket/waistcoat thing more and more Rach, I might have to invest!
These are great ideas! Love the Mango dress, and I love a Zara jacket. Wouldn’t have thought of a sleeveless jacket but I like the look!
Thanks Fran, glad you like!
thank you! love the warehouse pieces! not typical boring black either.
Pleasure Clare! Loving the blue too, I’m so guilty of defaulting to black for work.
Love all these, as a teacher I have to keep pretty smart but practical enough to move around in… My eternal search is for the perfect pair of trousers. At 5 foot and currently curvier than I would like to be its really difficult. Any help would be appreciated!
I had hoped to include more trousers Chloe but wasn’t loving what I was seeing. I often end up buying cropped trousers which usually work out at the right length for me. Or else I have to get them shortened which, as you will know, doesn’t work for every trouser shape. So annoying. Will keep and eye out for trousers and if I spot enough for a post put one together for you.
Thanks, I waste so much money on this search, I actually find shopping for the dreaded work trouser quite upsetting! I also find cropped trousers a good option… Finding a pair in the winter months can be challenge!
