My friend Ellie got engaged on Christmas Day and the big day is set for late November. Earlier this year I was delighted when she asked me to join some of my other close friends as her ‘something blue’.
I have to admit the concept wasn’t one I was familiar with, however essentially we are joining Ellie’s Bridal Brigade; helping out with a few jobs (I get to use blackboard paint – hooray!) and get to lend a hand whenever she needs one.
It’s an ace role and I am so honoured to be a part of Eleanor & Mike’s big day, however the impending nuptials have got me in clothing predicament.
Obviously I need to wear ‘something blue’ which in principle is quite straight forward but I haven’t found anything I’ve fallen in love with yet. Two of my friends already have navy lace frocks of some variety so I don’t want to deviate too much and look like I didn’t get the memo.
Here a a few pieces I’ve considered but I would literally be overjoyed if you could share any dresses you’ve seen on the High Street that may be suitable.
Little Mistress Embroidered Mesh Prom Dress with Necklace Detail, £65.00, Asos
I’m a big fan of the subdued colour, the embroidery and slightly swooshy skirt on this Little Mistress Prom Dress
Ionia Dress, £125, Coast
The first choice of many a wedding guest, Coast always does occasion wear well. The pretty cap sleeves on this chiffon dress are really feminine as is the cinched waist.
Lace Dress, £69.99, Zara
This is the usual kind of shape I go for as it’s a flattering cut for me. However I’m not convinced the simple Zara Lace Dress is fancy enough for such a special occasion?
Metallic Gown, £79.99, Mango
Ellie’s candlelit ceremony is taking place at dusk in an epic bomb-blitzed chapel. It’s going to be massively atmospheric but the bride has warned it may be a bit chilly. This long sleeved metallic gown would be great to keep chills at bay but I think the jerseyesque style bottom may be a bit too casual.
Sheer Floral Lace Dress, £249, Ted Baker
The fit-and-flare shape of this Ted Baker Lace Dress is elegant. Love how the brighter cobalt blue adds a twist to a classic however it’s just a bit too expensive for me.
One Shoulder Cut Off Jumpsuit, £50, Asos
So this is a bit of a wildcard. I normally wouldn’t hesitate about buying a jumpsuit for a wedding but is a navy all-in-one a bit too edgy for a ‘something blue’?
Please, please, please send through any suggestions you have for blue occasion wear. I need help!

Jump Suit Jump Suit Jump Suit Jump Suit Jump Suit
I think I like the jump suit best?
Knew that would be your favourite 😉 x
I concur! The jumpsuit is fab! And definitely wedding appropriate
I really love the Asos one, so elegant and different. I’d be hesitant about wearing something from Coast, because, like you said, it’s a favourite shop with wedding guests, so chances are someone else might be wearing it. Not sure about the jumpsuit at all! I think they look great for a night out, but I personally wouldn’t wear one to a wedding, and definitely not if I was part of the bridal party. But then I’m not very fashion forward, so that could just be me being a scaredy cat about standing out! x
Hi M-J, I love Coast dresses but I’ve never bought one precisely for that reason. One of my best friends ended up the same dress as one of our other guests at our wedding and she wasn’t impressed! x
Definitely the jump suit – i love it! My S-I-L wore a blue jumpsuit to my wedding in July and looked ace 🙂 i think it would look fab on the group photos – something abit different xx
Another vote for the jumpsuit – thanks Jenny! Glad to hear your sister-in-law rocked one x
Oh I flipping LOVE that jumpsuit! I’d go for it – well, depending on the general wedding style of course – if everyone is wearing pretty dresses and its quite formal, poss not (but get it anyway as its GORGE)
I love this something blue idea – is it in addition to bridesmaids? What a nice way to get all your have girls involved! Saying that however, blue is really not my colour of choice. If it were me Id go for something that is not completely blue. I love this dress from French connection:

Its glam and feminine without being too girly/frilly. Would look divine with this coat too:

Good luck!
Wow, love both of these choices Georgina! I also admire your advice to buy a coat AS WELL, Lauren I think you need both of these, for Christmas parties if not for the wedding.
And the jumpsuit too. Obviously.
OMG the dress is amazeballs.
Yep, feel very lucky that it’s in addition to her bridesmaids (who all look amazing in black gowns). So nice to feel involved in such a special day 🙂 x
How about either of these?

I especially like the second.
Have you tried using Polyvore to find something appropriate? It’s how I found most of my bridesmaid dresses (they are all wearing very different dresses). Pop in the details you want then choose a colour.
Oh Jemma all the links have gone squiffy 🙁
Do you know I’ve never used polyvore. It might be time to start.
Oh how frustrating. Well, they were beautiful dresses 😉 You’ll get them on the Mango website- the one I thought was particularly lovely was the blue and white maxi.
I’m off to take a peek. Thanks Jemma x
Lipsy have a fantastic midnight blue jumpsuit at the moment with a sequined top. Would look great with some killer heels.

There’s also this version with a lace top.

Oooh yes, definitely need some killer heels now.
that lace toppped one is gorgeous!
Have you tried Monsoon?
I had a quick scoot Sarah but probably need to nip back and have a better look.
Blue is my favourite colour for dresses! Love all of these, especially the Ted Baker one…trying to convince myself I can now justify this for a February wedding next year (it is abroad and will be sunny so think this could work well). Why do I come on RMS on pay day?! Needs to stop! A similiar-ish one, which is more budget friendly is this one from asos…http://www.asos.com/ASOS/ASOS-Baroque-Embroidered-Shift-Dress/Prod/pgeproduct.aspx?iid=4099750&istCompanyId=6f061ed0-7427-4b6c-bb90-987c0bd08468&istItemId=ixmliiatl&istBid=tztx&gclid=CjwKEAjwhqShBRDS95LciqqaonISJADj1rgaUfNTlheiLEqS4pWe3scYALiwxUNaOGXhozqNH1euRxoCEKzw_wcB
The Asos one is a beaut Sian. Worried it might be a bit short as it’s not one to wear with thick opaques. As it’s payday I definitely think you should get the Ted Baker one 😉
I love the Little Mistress Embroidered Mesh Prom Dress
It’s cute isn’t it Katie?
Navy is the colour for my bridesmaids. I’m torn between the metallic gown or the jumpsuit. I’ve seen the ted baker dress and I don’t think it’s made well enough for the price.
Thanks for letting me know Sarah. That’s really disappointing for such a pricey dress.
Jumpsuit Jumpsuit! At a friend’s wedding there were a lot of guests in navy blue dresses (including me) – one girl wore a navy blue jumpsuit and she looked the height of style. Do it do it!
I think I’m just about convinced Kate!
Wow! All are beautiful but I love number one! Sounds like I’m on blind date…
Ha ha ha Rebecca! That reminds me, Cilla’s on tonight… x
Jumpsuit!!! You only live once!
I absolutely love the dress Sian posted, but would also be worried about it being too short… But that jumpsuit looks ace! And I am sure that it would suit you really really well. So stylish, so elegant, but with a twist! Anyone can wear a dress!
Thanks Ana and Anja, I think I’m going to order tonight x
For all those people advocating a jumpsuit… Do you have to be tall to pull one off? I’m 5’4 and a slim pear shape, but quite short legs and I worry I’d look too stumpy in one. Have a wedding coming up that I’d love to go a bit more chic and daring for but I just can’t seem to find anything!
Hi Anna, I’m 5ft 2 (3 on a good day) and I love a good jump suit. Mine have dainty patterns on or are very plain through as I think I’m too short to pull off a jazzy pattern. Hope this helps x
Oh thank you! Yes that’s very helpful. I might try some on. I’m also now thinking of a full skirt and jumper combo for my wedding guest outfit – after all, if it’s good enough for Olivia P on her wedding day I think I should be allowed!
Oh absolutely Anna. Awesome combo x
I bought a navy jumpsuit last year for a wedding and wore it again this year for my sister in law’s wedding. I was the only female there who wore something other than a dress. I took this as a good thing! 🙂 Jumpsuit all the way!
