I am the not-so-proud owner of combination skin. This usually means by 2pm my make-up has either completely slid off my face or congealed into unattractive dry patches on my cheeks. Lovely.
Here are a few of my tried and tested products that I’m using to attempt to keep my face on past lunchtime.
Estee Lauder Double Wear Foundation | Boots | £27.50
Recently I decided to bite the bullet and splash out on Estee Lauder’s Double Wear Foundation as I had heard so many people rave about it.
The almost powdery formulation is a completely different texture to my previous Clinique Super Balance and so takes much longer to apply. (I prefer to use my fingers to apply rather than a brush or sponge). I’ve had to make sure that my skin is highly moisturised before applying so that the foundation doesn’t cling to my dryer areas.
Boasting an impressive 15 hour staying power, I am pleased to report that this foundation lasts and lasts and lasts. You need a serious amount of make-up remover to eradicate this bad boy from your face. I’ve just switched back to my Liz Earle regime to ensure that every last scrap is removed after I had a few breakouts in my first week.
I’ve heard that the formula is now much runnier than it used to be and I think I speak for a few when I say that the product would benefit from a packaging redesign. A pump dispenser would mean less impromptu movements trying to stop the foundation dripping off the back of your hand.
Bobbi Brown Eyeliner | John Lewis | £17.50
My friend introduced me to this product about four years ago and the Black Ink version has become a staple in my Make-up Bag.
You’ll need a fine brush to apply but the formulation allows quick, precise and smooth application. Providing the brush is scrupulously clean then you can easily achieve a sharp winged look, or you can smudge for a smokey eyed look.
It’s long lasting and water resistant too, but thankfully is easily removed at the end of the day. If you do splash out on the brush it can be a pricey investment but it will last you an age. Pick yours up from John Lewis.
NARS Velvet Lip Pencil | Selfridges | £18
My first purchase of this pencil was a bold and bright fuscia shade which doesn’t seem to be available any more. I was amazed that even after a full day of eating, drinking, gossiping and the like, the colour remained on my lips. I don’t think I’d ever needed to use make-up remover for a lip product before!
This pencil is a jumbo-sized crayon and so putting it on is a doddle. It has a completely matt, yet creamy finish that doesn’t dry out your lips. My newer ‘Pink Cantaloupe‘ shade doesn’t seem to stay around quite as long as it’s fuscia counterpart but still beats other lip products for staying power.
What products do you recommend for their longevity? Any gems that stay put no matter what stresses you’re under? I’d particularly love to hear if you have any budget long lasting make-up staples?
Oooh love a make-up post! I’ve had just today restocked my Bobbi Brown make up collection – a small fortune but worth it. Their long wear range is amazing – particularly the cream eyeshadows that come in a little pot – such nice colours and lasts for ages on your eyes – no creasing dripping or melting down the face at all and lasts for ages in quantity – a little goes a long way. I used Lancome Teint Idole foundation and it is brilliant. Not too cakey. I did a lot of research before getting married and BB long wear and this foundation lasted the whole day in 30 degree heat and lots of dancing so a good test!
Ooooh I am looking for a cream eyeshadow as a “base” – I have never even seen the BB versions, will have to take a peek!
Charlotte they are amazing! Shore is a nice nudey base colour and good for every day. Stays on even when I go swimming (and I splash A LOT!)
Thanks Victoria. I’m going to give the Bobbi Brown cream eyeshadow a whirl. I adore the shade of their normal eyeshadows but find they crease even if I use MAC primer.
This post could not have come at a better time!! I am currently doing hours of research (I have a very boring job!!) on foundation as I too am the lucky owner of combination skin – normal cheeks, spots go really dry but my t-zone resembles an oil slick by lunch time!! I have tried a few – No.7, Revlon, Max Factor and find that they are too orange for me as I have yellow-ish tones so I bit the bullet and went for a consulation at my local Space Nk. I was kitted out with the Nars Sheer Glow, it stayed on my face all day and I was so impressed I treated myself to a bottle. However, it doesn’t matter how I apply, if or what primer I use it still goes shiny 🙁 So off to Bobbi Brown in John Lewis I went, Long Wear was prescribed and it’s doing an ok job but not great either. I’m still shiny (and not in a healthy glow kinda way) and to be honest it’s all starting to get me down!!! I really want to do my own make up for my wedding in July but can see that’s not going to happen any time soon. I have been looking into the Estee Lauder Double Wear and it really does have some fab reviews, off to House of Fraser I go…
Try the Lancome one – couldnt recommend it enough. If you go to their counter they normally give you a trial pot to last a week or so. I use a BB pressed powder over the top then bronzer and it stays put. Good luck!
Thanks Victoria! Which Lancome one is it you would recommend?
Its called Teint Idole.
I’m going to give this a go!
It’s definitely worth a try Jenna. I feel a little bit like I have a mask on with Estee Lauder until about 10am and then it softens!
Have you tried the Estee Lauder Double Wear Light? Thats meant to be really good too so I was going to see if I can get a sample! Also I need a good concealer, I have inherited dark circles under my eyes (thanks Mum!!) and any concealers either are not good enough coverage, are orange or crease so I look like I’m old and wrinkly before my time!! Any suggestions?! 🙂
Oooh no Jenna I didn’t realise there was a Light version. The woman on the counter didn’t fancy being very helpful on my visit.
YSL Touche Eclat is always by go-to for covering dark circles
Double wear light is what you need for a wedding. No SPF means no flash back.
I used it over a mac primer with a tiny bit of my normal number seven foundation mixed in to ‘soften’ it a bit. Stayed put all day, no shine at all even after some ‘enthusiastic’ dancing 🙂
The EL ladies at my local debenhams were really nice, they gave me a massive sample as a tester.
Jenna, I have exactly the same problem with Nars Sheer Glow and have just found the answer. It’s expensive enough to make you cry, but Chanel Perfection lumiere is a total win!
I am a huge fan of primer to help foundation last. Laura mercier is the SHIZ for this.
I also highly recommend the Bobbi B gel eyeliners.
Also amazing for staying power are the marvellous Charlotte Tilbury eyeshadow pencils. A er, friend of mine, forgot to take hers off post-New Years Eve after an extra sniff of gin. Still almost perfect when she emerged at 10am (alright, midday) the next day.
Katie, It’s the only way to truly make sure your make-up lasts 😉
I too am v shiny but No 7 shine-free primer copes admirably (think it’s called “beautifully matte” now) and it’s reasonable (especially if you have a £5 off No 7 voucher, which I get every time I buy my lunch). Worked brilliantly for my wedding day – if you would like to do your own make up then I thoroughly recommend it, saves you a fortune and means you can look like you on your wedding day. Just don’t misplace your lip balm just as the car’s arrived to pick you up…
