I’m the first to admit that I adore a metallic beauty product and by that I mean one that adds that gorgeous bit of glitter to the face, the softest sheen of iridescence or the glowy visage that the ABBA girls would be proud of. It’s no coincidence that my sisters call me sparkle; I’m a self-confessed veritable magpie (and it doesn’t stop at the beauty products either!)
I’m always on the hunt for the next hot glitzy, shimmery, shiny beauty buy so in the spirit of what’s mine is yours I’m sharing my favourite metallic beauty products in the hope that you might let me into some of your secrets too…Sharing, after all, is caring isn’t it.
The Glitter Stick
I’m a huge HUGE fan of Laura Mercier’s caviar eye stick range. There are eight beautiful shades which have been designed to help enhance the smokey eye look and my absolute favourite is Sugar Frost which I use to highlight the inner eye and underneath my lower lash line. Sugar Frost is not so much glittery as iridescent and helps this mama look a darn sight more glowy than she would if the product didn’t exist.
If I was to describe the texture then I’d say it was creamy; application is super easy (the stick is just thick enough to apply generously without descending into a bleary mess but not so thin that it hurts to layer it onto the more delicate areas of your eye). The colour glides and blends effortlessly without compromising on intensity so it’s not as if you need to apply layers and layers to get a solid colour. I’ll have probably have bought all of the other shades by the time the year is up…
The Eyeshadow
I’m currently on my third pot of NARS’ dual intensity in Dione after my mum half-inched my previous purchase after casually asking what it was I was wearing on my eyelids. Honestly, mothers these days!
Dione is my go-to everyday eyeshadow though I can appreciate that it might be a bit too shimmery for some. Using just my fingertips I apply the product ‘dry’ for a sheer smattering of colour but it can be applied wet for more of a high shine finish. Dione has the slightest hint of bronze to it whereas Callisto (also in the range) is a bit more pinky. I’ve got my eye on Himalia too…All colours are metallic with high intensity pigmentations.
The Highlighter
Why have you included a highlighter I hear you ask…? It’s not exactly metallic is it? Well I beg to differ because Tom Ford’s highlighter pen in Citrine is like spreading silvery moonlight across your face. Lush.
Ok so it’s not cheap…at £42.00, it’s not something you’ll be dabbing on your mush just to pop to the local corner shop but has the most incredible longevity. I know from experience that it will be the one remaining product that won’t have slipped off my face after a long day at work so it’s definitely value for money. I use it to highlight my brow line and my cheek bones as well as my cupid’s bow from time to time. Plus it smells nice too.
The Blusher
It was actually Mrs O’Shea that introduced me to Nars’ Super Orgasm blusher four years ago when she included it in my super cute ‘honeymoon box’ that she and Adam crafted for me to open on the morning of my wedding day. I know talk about the best bosses! I was already a huge fan of their standard Orgasm product but the Super Orgasm goes above and beyond with teeny tiny particles of glitter in the blush itself which gives you just the right amount of shimmer without it looking like you’ve been dunked head first into the local primary school’s crafting box. I love it so much that I’ve invested time and time again.
The Lip Gloss
If you’re someone like me that loves the idea of lip gloss but can’t stand all the sticky nonsense that comes with it then Yves Saint Laurent’s gloss volupte lip gloss might be your next beauty buy. I love the gold shade, which I wear over some of my more neutral lipsticks for the perfect day to night summer transition (when I’m not in mum mode). The shine is high so bear this in mind if you’re after a more subtle look.
The Dream Product
Or is it? I’ve heard mixed reviews about Guerlain’s L`Or Radiance Concentrate with reviewers either raving about the product or slating it completely. I’m not sure who to believe.
The science states that the product – a gel make-up base incorporating 24-carat gold flakes – evens out fine lines and adds a glow to the face when worn under foundation. Some claim that it’s the best thing they’ve ever bought – their skin is supple and glowy and their makeup lasts perfectly when worn in combination with the concentrate. Others state that it’s an utter waste of money leaving them with a gloopy complexion and lumps of gold flakes splattered unevenly across their face. I’m all of a dither…have any of you purchased it? Would you recommend?
So that’s my round up of metallic beauty buys. Do any of you own them already? Have you got any suggestions of products I need to have in my makeup bag right NOW. After all it’s payday this week and you know we all love a bit of dirty enabling….
I love metallic make up as I tend to go for a dewy look. One of my favourite products is Maybelline Dream Touch cream blusher in Berry. Although the colour looks quite dark in the pot (I am fair skinned), just a dab on each cheek gives me a lovely a subtle, rosey glow which has a slight sheen to it.
Ohhh I’m loving the sound of this Claire and I’m a big fan of cream blushers so I may have to give this a try – thanks for the tip!
I love metallic, shimmer products too, love my Benefit High Beam shimmery liquid highlighter. Some really lovely product suggestions here too. However after browsing various beauty blogs this weekend I came across an article by a Bobbi Brown consultant, who said that shimmer products ‘cling to tired, dehydrated skin’, making you look even more tired, so to avoid them :-(. I did then follow said bloggers make-up tutorial, avoiding using my beloved Benefit High Beam and I have to confess, I looked very bright & dewy. Arghhh, I don’t get makeup, think I need a proper makeup tutorial (at the grand old age of 37, I really should know how to do it by now!)
Do you know Nicola – High Beam is one of the few products I can’t seem to get on with. I first spotted one of my close friends using it about a year ago and it looked amazing on her cheekbones and brows but on me it looked like I was a member of the lost boys with greasepaint smeared across my face. Not so hot.
Re the shimmery thing…I do kind of get where you’re coming from. On my off days i.e. when I haven’t moisturised regularly/properly and when I haven’t been eating and drinking healthily then glittery products can make me look a bit grey. If I’ve been a ‘good’ girl then the self-same products actually make me look even better than I would do if I hadn’t had worn them. I guess the moral is to make sure we look after ourselves properly from all angles…
I LOVE SHIMMER! Total magpie over here. I never really used a primer, but I have found it’s the best way to get that lit-from-the-inside out look, and now I used Laura Mercier’s Radiance every single day and it makes a huge difference.
After some RMS dirty enabling, I also bought the RMS highlighter which is awesome for cheekbones, brow lines, etc!
I do love the LM caviar eyeshadows – was introduced to them in a Space NK trial one day but haven’t splashed out yet because my Body Shop ones are still going strong…but my resolve may be weakening!!
