Over the years I have tried a myriad of fancy moisturisers, serums and supposed “miracle” treatments. For the most part I have been disappointed with the results, in fact, nothing made a “real” difference to the condition of my epidermis until I learnt how to cleanse it properly (I say properly, as with all these posts what I mean is a method that works for me.)
My method is simple – I always double cleanse, first with damp cotton pads soaked in my potion of choice and on the second go I use a warm flannel or muslin cloth for removal, this process sloughs away those pesky dead skin cells and gives you more glow than any wonder cream I’ve ever used. True story.
I have fair reactive skin, as I’ve gotten older it has not improved, in some respects my intolerance to products has increased. And although there are times when I simply can’t resist the latest skincare launch by a high profile brand (but it says it will make me line free in 4 weeks with the special plant derived photosynthsised molecules !…) I do endeavour to stick to what I know.
I actually rotate a variety of cleansers dependent on the weather, how much make-up I’ve been wearing and how my mug seems to be behaving on that particular day. I’m not suggesting you buy all five or anything but I’ve written a description of each that I hope is helpful, should you be on the look out to try something new to clean your lovely face.
Clinique Liquid Facial Soap Extra Mild £15.50
I know! actual soap! How dare I use the s-word. This is more like a creamy lotion in my humble opinion, and is more thorough than the others yet not at all astringent. I like to use it when I have been sporting sun cream or make-up primer which I feel requires something that little bit extra in terms of shifting-gunk ability.
The toners frighten me to death though, they smell like paint stripper.
Clinique is available at John Lewis.
Avene Gentle Milk Cleanser £9.75
I love this brand (I use their water spray frequently and their specific eye-makeup remover is the only one I allow near my peepers) and this is a VERY moisturising option. I use it when my skin is particularly dry (usually in winter months) and massage it in for a good few minutes before removal.
Avene is available at Boots.
A-Derma Sensifluid Cleansing Oil £8.18
Another awesome brand for reactive types, I steer well clear of oils usually (they bring me up in hives) but this one is lush – no weird scary flower extracts or things that makes you itchy.
I use this when I just feel I could do with a pampering “super” cleanse (usually once a week) and it’s really effective at removing flakes.
Boots stock a limited range but I head to the french website for this particular item www.leguidesante.co.uk (It’s addictive – you have been warned.)
Boots Simply Sensitive Lotion £1.39
This is my favourite. Yes folks, my most beloved skincare product is £1.39. It’s so gentle, and so darn cheap, it really doesn’t matter if you use a hefty amount to really shift that daily grime. It’s my regular go-to as it’s not too greasy, doesn’t smell of anything in particular and if I accidentally shove it in my eye (happens) there is absolutely no stinging sensation.
I tend to buy in bulk (they have 3 for 2 offers at Boots frequently) as the thought of running out makes me feel queasy.
Garnier Micellar Lotion £3.32
This is quite a new addition to my bathroom cabinet. I’ve tried a few of these “water” type cleansers before and have been left somewhat dehydrated, I therefore tend to give them a wide birth.
This Garnier version I like though, perfect for lazy days (yes ok ok sometimes I don’t feel like the whole flannel fandango and just want to crawl into bed) and when you just require something cooling/non oily.
Garnier is available at Superdrug.
So sensitive souls, what’s your cleanser of choice? and do you (like me) rotate more than one?
Since your brilliant £1.99 mascara recommendation (which is now my daily make up staple!) I will definitely be trying the Boot lotion.
I use the blue Simple face wash when I and scrub with a clean flannel for gentle exfoliation. I am also a lover of micellar water, the B. range for Superdrug is my favourite and often on offer. If I use it at night my skin feels lovely and moisturised the next day xxx
Francesca! so glad the £1.99 mascara worked out! I have never used he B. range by super drug skincare but I do love their Dolls House lipstick, it feels so expensive on x
I tried so many different products (including some pricey brands) that wouldn’t leave my skin feeling tight or leave my cheeks red after a nice reaction!! I swear by liz earle hot cloth cleanse and polish, its managed to stop my breakouts and I don’t get that tight/dry feeling after use. Plus the moisturiser doesn’t leave me with a shiny nose by the afternoon!!
Hi Nadine, so many folks recommend Liz Earle (including my Mum – in fact I think RMS’s Adam uses it?!) unfortunately I’m allergic to quite a few of the ingredients (rosemary and eucalyptus) but I do follow the whole exfoliation with the flannel/muslin.
Yay! I love avene products, I use their soothing hydrating cream when my face is resembling a flake bar in texture! Sleep in it and wake up soft as a peach!
I have been trying out a few new eye make up cleansers of late, I used Nivea double effects which is a lovely thing and melted my make up a treat but needed a lot of shaking to mix the oil formula to avoid just a face full of grease! I am now onto garniers version of it which is a bottle you shake to mix it and is much less oily and is kind to lashes and I have to say I love it! It just needs 30 secs on the lashes to soak up and a couple of wipes and make up has melted and I barely lose any lashes! I used a YSL equivalent to this and I would much rather the garniers one and save the pennies for lipstick!
I then use origins face milk cleanser at the minute which I would say is ok but probably not my favorite and I am going to give the boots one a whirl! I use muslin cloths too religiously! Tempted to try one of those face brushes things as boots own came out with good results and not too dear! Not sure if it will peel my sensitive mush like a veg peeler though!!
I tried a clarisonic and I’m just not sure, my face was quite red afterwards (I’ve tried a few times) and I haven’t used Origins in ages, they used to do an excellent eye cream that they discontinued (boo) so maybe I should give the brand a re-look!
Will have to give the Garnier make-up remover a go! x
It’s not cheap but I have a bit of a thing for the Pai Camelia & Rose Facial Cleanser. It’s my go to cleanser when my face is going crazy. It also comes with a muslin cloth which helps me to justify the cost.
I’ve not heard of Pai, is that a new range? x
Ive had real problems with my skin in the last year and my usual routine of chucking a bit of water on my face and using a £1.00 pack of budget wipes just wasnt cutting it anymore. I did make a trip to the clinique counter and i was given the three step anti blemish range (when i say given i mean i handed over my credit card) I have to agree with you Charlotte; the toner is unbelievably strong and pretty damm scary. However i have to say in just two weeks my skin has cleared up dramatically and it feels so clean. Im still using a more nourishing moisteriser from a different range at night and I do think this range is only meant to be used temporarily, but for now it seems to be doing the trick x
Hi Hannah, it must work for so many people – it is one of the best selling regimes on the market I think, plus it probably smells a lot worse than it actually is! I used to work with a girl who had the most beautiful skin and she used the number two toner followed by regular nivea cream on top?! amazing! I’m so glad it’s working for you and if it ain’t broke…..x
I’ve recently had a bit of an overhaul of my cleansing regime as my face was going MENTAL. Really did not expect at the age of 30 to be dealing with the same, if not worse, nasty blemishes I had as a teenager.
I watched some skincare videos on Lisa Eldridge’s website and she described her skin as the same delightful mix of blemish-prone and dehydrated as mine. I’ve now also adopted the double cleanse approach. I don’t know why this didn’t occur to me before?! So I use the Garnier water cleanser to take my make up off first, which I really like and don’t find too dehydrating as I was also worried about that being a problem. I then use my dermologica cleanser to really clean my skin and treat my problem areas.
Twice a week I use the Dermologica Gentle Cream Exfoliant as my face really can’t take any of the exfoliation scrubs at all. This, plus Paula’s Choice moisturiser which by some magic seems to be able to treat blemishes and be anti-aging at the same time, seems to be making a huge difference. It’s amazing how much having any kind of skin issue, be it blemishes, dry patches, redness etc can get you down. But fingers crossed this combo will continue to do the trick…
Hi Claire, your skin sounds like mine as a teen which then came back in my mid-twenties, it was flaky and covered in eczema but then I would get this weird greasy sheen and lumps underneath the flaky bits…lovely. I actually found that changing my contraceptive pill really helped and the less fancy products the better.
I don’t know why the double cleanse didn’t occur to me either – it works a treat!
After years of looking for something which helps my dry skin and also combats breakouts, I discovered Dr Hauschka about 5 years ago. Lovely products but £20 for cleanser just wasn’t working out for me! Its only in the past 12 months that I started using Olay essentials cleansing milk a bargain at £2.99 (also usually on offer half price at tesco or 2 for £3 at superdrug). My skin has never been better and now I’m using all their moisturiser and face scrub too, from the complete care range.
HI Claire, is that the pink bottle? I have used that one too, I really like the scent! I do wonder whether some of these £30 cleansers are possibly the same stuff just with much more expensive marketing!
Really interesting about the ‘double cleanse’, will be trying that one later. It’s really hard to find a good cleansing product and technique, at the moment I’m switching between a simple cleansing gel and a boots botanicals one, have tried lots of clinique products and my skin never takes to them I always end up with tight blotchy skin!
Caoimhe let me know how you get on with the double cleanse!
I’m a dermalogica fan, I use their ultra calm range (at least I think that’s what its called) and its great for my dry-yet-at-the-same-time-greasy skins (how? how??)
Its pricey but its good!
That is the skin I had (mentioned above) in my teens early/mid twenties with blotches of itchy eczema added in for the craic, so difficult to control – I feel your pain! I found exfoliation helped (and not using harsh products – its tempting because of the grease) x
I am a big fan of Simple products: I use their face wash to remove make up as it’s so mild it doesn’t hurt even if you accidentally cleanse your eye ball, and their day and night moisturisers to keep everything soft. And it’s cheap as chips!
Tallulah I think Simple is similar to the Boots own simply sensitive range (even the packaging is nearly identical, (wonder how they feel about that?!) have you tried any of their eye care at all? I haven’t but wonder if it works?
I use simple products as my skin is so sensitive and dry! I can’t get rid of red dry areas around my nose or middle of my chin. Their eye makeup remover is good, gets rid of everything, sometimes in the morning you have very slight panda eye but nothing major. If I put on too much on the cotton pad my eye may sting for a bit after. Their soap wash and exfoliater seem to work fine on me.
The problem I have is moisturiser! It’s a nightmare as can’t find anything that doesn’t clog my pores and stops my flakes. Currently using khiels and so far so good, fingers crossed it’s the one!
