I’m pretty sure at some point that it will eventually stop raining but until then I’m going to have to attempt to create my own rays of sunshine by adding a bit of yellow to my life.
Now yellow isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, mine included. I haven’t used it my own home since I had lemon sponged bedroom walls in the nineties (with a rather fetching sunflower border). However, as it seems to have hit the high street I have decided to embrace all shades of the sun.
If, like me, you’re afraid to decorate with a full-on yellow palette, I’ve knocked up a couple of looks for you to consider. Both use this very cheerful accent and could work with your existing decor.
Bold & Bright
The first uses a bold graphic monochrome base with plenty of chevrons and stripes. I adore black and white decor as it has a timeless elegance. However it can be slightly clinical and so it’s nice to add an extra hue or two to liven it up. Here I’ve layered in a vivid yellow cushion or two to break up the black and white (the majority being from H&M), and piled up a few throws (from Amara and HomeSense).
Daffodils are the easiest way to add a splash of colour to a room. They are dirt cheap and they make a real colour pop here against our black metal stool (from Home Bargains!).
Finally the striking Eames Tray would look gorgeous either just on display or perched on the bed with your favourite cuppa and magazine.
Muted Mustard
The second scene embraces my love of the industrial decor that is so very popular right now. I have a grey and blue man cave in my own home and I’m quite taken by the masculine colour scheme, especially combined with galvanised steel and aged wood. Not going to lie though, it can be a little too moody sometimes so to cheer up this particular room I went for mustard and ochre tones.
Once again the majority of the cushions are from H&M, with a few others thrown in from Next and Orla Keily. I am seriously in love with the Bronte blanket as it’s super soft as well as adding a lot of texture to the room too.
On the Cox and Cox Zinc Tray Table sits a trusty Anglepoise Lamp. I’ve used the Mini slate grey version here which is less imposing than its bigger brother.
For an easy piece of art I downloaded vintage illustrations from the Graphics Fairy and after printing, secured them in place with Washi Tape. If you’re not familiar with the tape of the washi variety, it’s basically pretty masking tape originating from Japan. Although it’s sticky it can easily be removed so is perfect for using on your walls, especially as it comes in every colour you could possibly imagine.
The final touch was to add ‘Billy Balls’ yellow stems to our table adding a natural element that compliments the room perfectly.
Have you decorated any rooms in your home in this happy and optimistic hue? Are you feeling a bit inspired to add a splash of sun to a room in your house?
Ha! “Ochre Touches” IS my living room. Nice.
Where’s the glass press picture frame from in the far right image of the “washi tape” please? I’ve seen them on Anthro and Oliver Bonas but alas no more…… Thanks!
@Philippa – was just thinking how cute the frame is – think it’s NOTHS but, yup they are sold out! Darn it!

Good sleuthing gal – I remember now – they’re Nkuku – I’ve got a load of lovely enamelware from there before – that must be where I’ve seen them…

You can still get them at Cox and Cox x
Thanks a BUNCH Charlotte – I was planning to at least try and get some work done after spending all afternoon consuming RMS, what hope do I have now I’ve been reminded Cox & Cox’s spring collection is in need of perusal! 😀
p.s. Good shout. I have now bought more than I have space on the walls for!
Ooooooo I can still get some?!!!
Fabulous news! [sprints over to get some, quick sharp]
Have a feeling the hubby is not going to like my new favourite blog! 😉 x
Not a fan of yellow, I’m a grey girl. But… this is lovely. I have the tray after seeing it on RMW before now and love it!
I have a yellow, grey and white bedroom …. I’m not a fan of yellow normally but had to work with certain constraints imposed on me when we moved house, and actually I really like it. Its very restful!
Sounds gorgeous Shirley. I have to admit yellow is really growing on me x
Wow that is really rather gorgeous! I would never have thought of using yellow as décor, but it’s really beautiful!
Oooh we likey! Funnily enough this is my plan for our dining room/office – i got the idea from a massive Banksy print that was a Christmas gift from my lorry driver, black and white Travolta and Jackson in Pulp Fiction with bright yellow bananas where the guns should be. So the plan is black, off white and grey with little pops of yellow here and there. Just as soon as I finish with the living room…x
This made me actual laugh out loud…because I also had lemon sponged bedroom walls!! I think it was in the 90s. I like to think that means I was bang on trend (errrr).
I adore the hello mixed with black and white, very sunshine but still chic and stylish xx
Ha ha Emma! I’m pretty sure it was around the time that me and my Mum stencilled everything that stood still too! x
I’m not usually a fan of yellow but love these looks, especially the black, white and yellow. I might just have to get some yellow in my life!! x
I love this look. This has made me want to be more daring!! Just bought a new house and want every room to look immense so daily consumption of this blog is a must. I have to get the cox and cox tray!! Not sure where it will go but just have to get it anyway!!! Amazing blog. Love it!! Xxx
Wow love this colour scheme, so bold but also kind of strangely relaxing!
Lv these inspirational tips! We have just painted the lounge/dinning room a light olive which sets the wood burner off beautifully. We also have black sofa, curtains and light shades so need a splash of colour to liven it all up. Loving the mustard and yellow! Mmmmm what to do?!?! Any tips? Thanks x
Hi Claire,
I think a bit of mustard/ochre would look smashing with the olive xxx
hI gUYS,
I KNOW THIS IS A VERY OLD POST BUT CAN YOU REMEMBER WHERE THE PAINT SAMPLE COLOURS WERE FROM AS IT IS THE EXACT COLOUR I NEED FOR MY FRONT ROOM!
THANKS
