Last week I hopped on the Eurostar to Paris (taking advantage of the brilliant January sale, £29.50 each way – bargain!). I’ve been to Paris a few times and already ticked off all the major sights and museums, so this trip was about pottering around the city with no particular plan. Here’s my five favourite finds…
Merci Cinéma Café, Boulevard Beaumarchais
This bustleing cinema-themed retro-style café is a great lunch stop. A glass of soup (I know, a bit weird, tasted good though) and a plate of charcuterie, washed down with a glass of fresh juice kept me going until dinner. Don’t skip a trip to the toilet, which is covered in vintage movie posters and pages from old magazines. Instagram heaven!
Hotel Amour, 8 Rue De Navarin
Having pinned a picture of the pink neon Amour sign that hangs outside the hotel to the Rock My Style Pinterest board, this was a must-visit. I sipped a couple of glasses of (very good) red wine in the courtyard bar and did my best to avoid the attentions of a (very drunk) man on the table next door.
La Maison Mère, 4 Rue De Navarin
On the same street as the Hotel Amour, I stopped by this New York style bistro (think white tiles, vintage furniture and quirky touches, like bowler hat light shades) for dinner. I shared plates of cheese and meat and didn’t share the A-mazing cheesecake. Apparently the burgers are the best in Paris. Clearly I’ll have to go back.
Bob’s Juice Bar, 15 Rue Lucien
Having arrived in Paris with a stinking cold I was in serious need of some vitamins. I headed to this cute juice bar and downed a green smoothie. I have no idea what was in it that made it such an alarming shade of green, but I felt instantly better. Fruit and veg: 1. Evil cold: 0.
The Sunken Chip, 39 Rue Des Vinaigriers
I love how bonkers the very idea of this place is, a proper fish and chip shop in the heart of Paris. The Breton-sporting staff are ridiculously cute. The fish and chips are ridiculously good. And hearing the words “chip butty” and “mushy peas” in a French accent? Brilliant.
It was also my first time doing airbnb and I can’t recommend it highly enough. I stayed in a chic flat six floors up in Montmartre, which worked out much cheaper than staying in a similarly stylish boutique hotel. Every morning sitting at ‘my’ dining table and eating croissants and pain aux raisins bought from the nearby bakery, I felt as if I lived in Paris, if only for a couple of days.
I’m already planning my next trip (I’ve got to try the burgers at La Maison Mère, right?!). Where are you favourite spots in Paris? Have you done airbnb? Do share.
Yippppeeeee to this post! Were spending 3 nights in Paris after 10 in Nice for our honeymoon in July so hope lots of lovely people suggest lots of lovely places to go! this has got me all excited! xx
Jenny I am very jealous! I went to Paris in September, we had a super time, I loved just wandering around and discovering different cafes and quaint interior shops.
Merci Cinema cafe that Miranda mentioned is definitely worth a look – as is the massive Merci store, take your credit card!
What a lovely honeymoon plan Jenny. Yes, as Charlotte says, take your credit card, the shopping is so good! x
Miranda – I’m gutted that I missed out on checking out the toilets in Merci!
Oooh Jenny you lucky thing. My favourite area is Marais (where Merci is). The Rose Bakery, Le Marché des Enfants Rouges and L’As Du Fallafel are all eateries that are worth a look.
I’ve been to Paris seven or eight times and still haven’t gone up the Eiffel tower. A few years ago we ventured to the top of Montparnasse Tower instead – far less crowds and you get to take in the view of La Tour Eiffel as well as panoramic views of Paris. Also it’s not far from the Catacombs (if you’re in to that kind of thing). It’s eerie but fascinating too x
You’ll have to go back and check out the toilets! x
I attempted a trip up the tower and had to be carried back down due to the terrifying fear of heights. Tres embarrassment! Xx
Paris has been on my travel list forever and skyscanner very helpfully keep reminding me flights are only £68!
I love airbnb, with a 1 year old its not feasible to do city breaks staying in hotel rooms (unless we were to be totally silent after 7pm!) but we found fantastic apartments in Copenhagen and Barcelona over the past few months which have been a fraction of the cost of staying in a hotel – and far nicer!
Airbnb’s brilliant isn’t it? Will definitely be doing again.
I love Airbnb – I have stayed in Paris twice using it – once on a romantic trip for our 5th anniversary of being together (everyone thought he was going to propose but he made me wait another 6 months for that!) when we stayed in a gorgeous studio in montmartre and then the second time on my hen do with 12 girls – again in montmartre. We have also used Airbnb in LA, San Francisco, Monterrey, Marrakesh and Istanbul – we try and use it over a hotel now. It just gives you so much freedom and makes you feel like you live there.
This restaurant is amazing for chateaubriand, cheese and red wine – it’s very small and not touristy – 16 Tholoze.
I would recommend the free walking tours from discover walks too – they do all different ones which show you parts of Paris off the main tourist trail such as Marais which is really nice and give you a really good sense of the place. The local guides give great recommendations for food / bars etc too.
j’adore Paris!
Big fan of airbnb too! Ooh, thank you for the restaurant recommendation. The walking tours sound great too. Will sign up next time I’m in Paris!
