Ah Autumn, the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness, sweater weather, porridge for breakfast, the GBBO final, red wine, fruit crumbles and, erm, Netflix and/or boxset binges. Am I right?!
Now the nights are drawing in, once dinner’s out of the way, the dishes are done and the bags are packed for the next day, it feels perfectly acceptable to hunker down, fire up the iPad and watch an episode, or three, of whatever series is my current addiction. After a summer of watching very little television at all I have to start getting my money’s worth out of my Netflix subscription, it’s simple economics. That’s my story, and I’m sticking to it.
I’ve just finished watching Bloodline and quite frankly I’m feeling bereft. If you haven’t watched it yet and you like a high quality drama I highly recommend that you get on it. It’s a Netflix original drama from the people behind Damages, another highly addictive drama that’s also worth a watch. Anyway, back to Bloodline, which is set in the Florida Keys where it’s always hot, even when it’s chucking it down, and it always seems to be cocktail hour (my kinda place, apart from the rain).
The series focuses on the Rayburn family who, at least initially, appear to be fine upstanding members of their Florida community. There’s Robert and Sally who run a hotel in an idyllic setting right on the beach and their grown up children, policemen John who’s married with two kids, Kevin who runs a boatyard and is married to Belle and lawyer Meg (my current TV crush, played by the excellent Linda Cardellini) who’s living with Marco (fellow American police drama fans will recognise him as Danny from Without A Trace, he also plays a policeman in Bloodline, typecast much).
Life couldn’t be better until Danny the oldest sibling and the black sheep of the family, returns and long-buried family secrets start to emerge, loyalties are tested and every member of the seemingly perfect family is revealed as all kinds of dysfunctional.
The entire cast is excellent and it’s shot beautifully. As a viewer you know from the get go that the series is leading somewhere quite dark and, after a slowish start, the show picks up pace, ramps up the drama and hooks you in to the point where you’re calculating how little sleep you need to be able to function the next day and how late you can set your alarm and still make it to work on time.
Apparently there’s going to be a second season (how?!) but until then I need a new series to bridge the gap. What are you watching? What’s got you rushing home from work to watch Just. One. More. Episode? And then, oh go on then, another one? Any and all suggestions (very) gratefully received!
Friday Night Lights on Netflix is amazing! Having had no previous interest in American football whatsoever I was sceptical at first but the by end of the first episode I was on the edge of my seat!
Brilliant cast and great storylines – We’re feeling a bit lost without it now so will be following the comments closely for other recommendations… X
I second this – FNL is my favourite series of all time! I too have no interest in American Football, but it’s about so much more than that. Tim Riggins for the win 🙂
I love Tim Riggins! I’ve started giving myself Coach Taylor style “clear eyes, full hearts, can’t lose” pep talks during workouts, cringe…
Another one for FNL- Tim Riggins alone is reason to watch it!
FNL is so good! I would actually love to go and see an American Football game now, preferably in Texas! And well……Tim Riggins! I shall say no more! A must watch!
I’ve heard good things about FNL Rebecca and Kyle Chandler who plays John in Bloodline is also in FNL, which I’m taking as a sign I should get on board despite, like you, having no interest in or knowledge about American football! x
Connie Britton (from Nashville – another recommendation, can’t get enough of it!) is the female lead and she’s brilliant too! x
Fargo was just superb. Martin Freeman was fantastic in it and Billy bob Thornton was typically quirky, dark and intriguing! Also had a great female lead which is always a bonus.
Ooh, sounds like my kind of show Kathryn, thanks for the recommendation!
Not a Netflix wonder but I felt the topic of autumn telly wouldn’t be complete without mentioning the fact that Downton Abbey starts on Sunday!! Although I’m not sure how I’ll deal with the genuine sadness when the series finishes!!
I’m a lapsed Downton viewer Sarah, perhaps I should get back on board for the final season?!
I second Friday Nights Lights. It is brilliant!!
Also, Damages is well worth a watch.
Sounds like FNL for the Autumn TV win Kate! Damages is so good, loved that show!
Ooo, I’ll be watching this closely as im completely up to date with Pretty Little Liars following previous recommendations! I can recommend The Good Wife and Sons of Anarchy on Netflix. And PLL obvs.
I’m missing PLL Jennifer! I haven’t watched any episodes of The Good Wife, but I know Charlotte is a fan. Adding Sons of Anarchy to the list too!
I’m nearly finished PLL after Miranda told me how good it was. Love it! But still not sure how I have got through 5 series with the same plot line?! x
Haha, I know what you mean Lottie, it really is a mystery, even more so than the true identity of A!!! x
I’ve just started watching Narcos on Netflix which is great. Before that I was OBSESSED by The Good Wife, which is excellent, so I would recommend both.
I’ve heard good things about Narcos Kate and Netflix does keep on recommending it to me!
Narcos is brilliant and the new favourite boxset in our house.
Another vote for Narcos. I’m on it, thanks Kiara!
I don’t have netflix, but amazon prime. On amazon prime I found Ripper Street with Matthew Macfadyen. I love to watch this during the week to relaxe on a work day. The weekends are for Downton Abbey! Next I plan on watching the 3rd series of The Good Wife.
Ooh I haven’t heard much about Ripper Street Mia, will investigate!
Ripper Street is fantastic absolutely love it, 3 great lead characters.
I loved Bloodlines so will be checked out Damages, and The Good Wife and know hubby wants to watch Narcos. Oh and not to mention the 7 series of GoT I need to watch!!
Love Ripper Street!!!
A random recommendation here, but we’re in the middle of watching Last Tango in Halifax and it’s amazing!! Some of the best British drama acting I’ve ever seen! Full of twists, laughs and truly heart warming moments, it’s about an elderly couple who meet and get married in their twilight years and what ensues as their families join. Sarah Lancaster is incredible in it.
It’s only short, but well worth a watch. 🙂
I’ve never even heard of Last Tango In Halifax Naomi but what a fantastic name for a show! Sounds great, on it!
Oh… A note to remember… Last Tango in Halifax is a BBC drama, but weirdly it’s hosted only on the Canadian Netflix. Do you use unblock-us.com to get the full range of Netflix countries? If not, I highly recommend it. It’s only about £4 a month and we get to watch all the US, UK, Australia, Canada and anywhere-else-we-want Netflix shows. Netflix don’t seem to mind 🙂
I’m VERY behind so you’ve probably all ready watched it, but we are currently watching the last series of Breaking Bad on Netflix. I’m totally hooked now and will be totally at a loose end when it finishes! Sounds like I need to start watching Bloodline or Friday Night Lights though!
I’ve (kind of) done Breaking Bad Emma, I watched the first couple of seasons, then the last couple of episodes (I know, I know). Walter White just didn’t pull me in as a lead character in the way that Jed Bartlet, Tony Soprano, Avon Barksdale/Stringer Bell/Omar et al did. Bloodline is definitely a good one to line up after BB. Enjoy!
Wet Hot American Summer – First Day of Camp is laugh out loud hilarious. It’s the prequel to the film Wet Hot American Summer, which is set at a summer camp in the 1980s. The cast is brilliant; Paul Rudd, Amy Poehler, John Hamm, Bradley Cooper, Josh Charles (Will from the The Good Wife!), Kristen Wiig… I could go on. The new series was released on Netflix earlier this summer and I think I watched the whole thing in a weekend!
I love Paul Rudd Ashley! Sounds like a good show to save for a particularly rainy weekend when I don’t have to leave the house!
Justified, not sure if its still on Netflix. Worth a watch for the eye candy alone.
Ooh, sounds good Rachel, will track it down!
It’s completely ridonculous but I love Once Upon a Time which is on Netflix. It’s based on a scenario where the wicked witch of the west curses all fairytale characters to a small town in Maine, U.S. It’s about to start on the fifth season but the first two seasons were fab and escapist fun!
Id also HIGHLY recommend the BBC 1995 production of Pride and Prejudice for anyone who hasn’t seen it as it’s available on Netflix and is basically the best TV thing ever!
I’m super excited for Downton, Gogglebox and GoT starting soon, eek so excited. Hubby and I are also making our way through the third season of Homeland. I’ve got hyperemesis at the mo in my first pregnancy so Netflix is my lifeline at the mo (I’m going to start PLL after all these recs!).
Once Upon A Time sounds fab Kate, will check it out. Didn’t know that Pride and Prejudice was on Netflix, might have to have a rewatch. Oh my goodness, hyperemesis sounds horrid, my mum suffered with me (but not with my younger sisters). Lots of love. xx
AH I LOVED Bloodline! I had a massive crush on Meg, too.
At the moment, Ben and I are obsessed with Peaky Blinders. I think we are a bit behind with this though because it’s a few years old.. It’s rough and ready but it’s great. Although it’s mainly amazing because we both think Cillian Murphy is the prettiest man in the world.
First series is on Netflix then you’ll have to pay for the next ones but the next series does have Tom Hardy, so everyone’s a winner.
xx
Yay, crush twins! Cillian Murphy has the best eyes ever! Totally up for paying to watch Tom Hardy. Which reminds me, I really must go and see Legend. Two Tom Hardys? Amazing!
The first series of Prison Break is AMAZING!
Agree Katie! Did you hear that they’re planning another series, which given how it ended up I don’t really understand. Unless they use an ‘It was all dream’ type get out!
Although I was quite sceptical in the beginning, “The Americans” has turned out to be just brilliant. And of course, “Sons of Anarchy” remains an absolute favourite of mine.
The Americans is another show I haven’t heard of Sam, but it sounds intriguing. Lots to get me through Autumn and Winter!
House of cards all the way!!
I’ve watched the first two seasons of House of Cards Emma so three is on my must-watch list!
Definitely check out Madam Secretary- OBSESSED!
I haven’t heard about Madam Secretary Natasha, will investigate now!
Homeland is still my favourite boxset of all time. Season 5 starts in a few weeks! And orange is the new black is easy watching x
I watched Homeland until it got a bit silly but I heard things got better, I really must get back on it Rebecca. I have to confess to never having watched a single episode of OITNB, definitely sounds like a show I would enjoy though!
