The news that Clueless turned 20 last week, (yes, 20, no I can’t believe it either) and reading all the nostalgic posts about it got me thinking about the films I loved growing up. The films I watched with friends at sleepovers or alone when I was babysitting, and that I bought on video and took to university and watched over and over, when I probably should have been writing an essay or, I don’t know, going out, or something.
Without further ado and in no particular order here are my top five #flashbackfriday films.
I wasn’t really a big fan of scary movies growing up but I made an exception for The Lost Boys, which isn’t really very scary at all. It featured my 80s crush Corey Haim (see also License To Drive). In the film Corey’s character’s older brother, who was played by Jason Patric (and who eventually replaced Corey in my affections) gets in with the local group of vampires, led by Kiefer Sutherland, which is obviously a Very Bad Idea. Road tripping round California a couple of years ago I stopped off in Santa Cruz to see the bridge from the film. You could say I’m still a fan.
Way before he became McDreamy Patrick Dempsey starred in Can’t Buy Me Love, as Ronald, a nerdy highschooler who gets the chance to elevate his social status when he comes to the rescue of a popular cheerleader, giving her $1000 to replace the white suede suit (which I totally wanted, remember, it was the 80s!!!) that she’d borrowed from her mother without asking and subsequently ruined. In exchange she agrees to pretend to be his girlfriend in order to make him popular. The plan works. She starts to like him. He turns into a massive jerk. And, well, I won’t spoil the ending but important life lessons are learned.
Reality Bites is the film that launched my ongoing crush on Ethan Hawke. I probably watched this about once a week during my final year at university and subsequently can quote huge chunks of dialogue, which basically is of no use whatsoever. I wasn’t very happy at university so I’m not really sure why I loved this film, in which the character’s lives don’t get any better after university, quite so much. It was probably mostly down to Ethan Hawke tbh.
Although Dirty Dancing and Ghost were probably more popular sleepover selections Point Break is hands down my favourite Patrick Swayze starring film. But then what’s not to like about a movie in which Patrick Swayze heads up a gang of surfers who commit audacious crimes and Keanu Reeves plays a cop who goes undercover and learns to surf in order to take them down? A remake has recently been made and is scheduled for a Christmas release (er, why mess with perfection Hollywood people?). I just watched the trailer for the remake (research!). I can reveal that as well as surfing there seems to be snowboarding and rock climbing (I know, right, seriously, what?!) as well as stunts that make the Fast and Furious franchise look like a reality TV series. Without Keanu I’m not on board.
Karate Kid didn’t make it into my original top five but then I watched the You’re The Best soundtracked montage fight scene on YouTube and, well, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off had to go. Karate Kid is a classic underdog story in which Daniel, played by Ralph Macchio (who was well into his twenties during filming fact fans) is a bullied teenager who, through karate and, erm, car cleaning, eventually gets his own back on his tormentors.
On another day and in a different mood my top five might have included Cocktail or Top Gun (that beach volleyball scene!) both starring Tom Cruise of course. I have a soft spot for the body swap movie genre so Big nearly made the cut (side note but if I was asked to compile a list of my favourite body swap movies Freaky Friday and 13 Going On 30 would definitely be in there too). I’m also very fond of The Goonies and I’m still wondering if I should have included Back To The Future. But then what would I have lost…?! #thestruggleisreal
That’s me. Over to you. What films would make your list? Do share below!
Stand By Me!
I didn’t watch Stand By Me until I was an adult Laura, so didn’t include!
We seem to have similar tastes in crushes! I too loved Ethan hawke reality bites was a fav but really loved before sunrise. Licence to drive was constantly on my video player had a massive thing for Corey haim. Stand by me was a top one I am embarrassed to say that I was a member with my friends of our little club called the ” brat pack lovers” and watched all the films like pretty in pink, st Elmos fire, the breakfast club. Grease was probably my first obsessive film and like many I can quote the entire film and sing all the songs…….
Oh my goodness, we’re crush twins Stacey! Love that you had a Brat Pack Lovers club! I was a St Elmo’s Fire fan, but didn’t watch the others until I was much older.
“stunts that make the Fast and Furious franchise look like a reality TV series” pahahaha!
You mean the Rock didn’t actually burst a cast off his broken arm solely with the power of his muscles and then stand smack in the middle of a road firing a minigun at a helicopter that was inexplicably unable to hit him?
Or the cars didn’t really parachute out of a jet and straight onto the road?
*illusions shattered*
Some excellent choices, and you remind me to watch some 90s films I missed out on at the time (Ben Stiller was in Reality Bites? This is news to me!)
Well, you know, he might have done, I fully believe the Rock could probably do anything he set his mind to! Yes, Ben Stiller, was totally in Reality Bites, also Steve Zahn and Janeane Garofolo, such a good cast!
Janeane Garofalo, she was ace! I wonder where she is now…
OMG, Janeane Garofalo is now 50. I’m not sure why it’s always a surprise that time passes, but it really is!
(same Kate as the above comments, by the way…there are so many of us Kates about!)
No way, she is forever the just-left-uni age she is in Reality Bites for me!
Wild hearts can’t be broken. One of my all time favourites….
I’ve never heard of it Kate. Just read the synopsis. Going on the must watch list!
Has anyone watched License to Drive as a grown up? I did once, not as good as I remembered! Karate Kid, now that has stood the test of time (in my opinion anyway!). I love that film. I refuse to watch the remake with the obnoxious offspring of Will Smith. It’s Ralph all the way for me.
Haha, no, I haven’t watched License To Drive as a grown up, I watched it so many times growing up, probably don’t need to watch it again! Urgh, no, I do not acknowledge the Karate Kid remake.
Does anyone else remember the film ‘now and then’?? I loved it!!! The music and clothes were amazing! Also, ‘the craft’ was about as scary as it got for me! Obviously ‘grease’ and ‘dirty dancing’ would make the top 5 too! Last choice would have yo be… Cruel intentions (Ryan Philippe was sooooo hot!)
I loved ‘Now and Then’ Michelle!
Mine is actually Clueless – I can hand on heart quote that film from beginning to end (yet some days can’t remember my PIN number!), still love Paul Rudd and would give anything to be Cher Horowitz for a day! I LOVE IT! I remember the day I went to watch it aged 12 and the l-o-n-g, l-o-n-g wait for it to come out on video, finally to get it in my stocking on Christmas day 1995 to put in on IMMEDIATELY! (I also still remember my poor Grandad nearly chocking on his tea at ‘You’re just a virgin who can’t drive’ line)!
I also love Parenthood with Steve Martin which my sister and I spent many a rainy Sunday watching. 10 Things I Hate About You holds a special place in my heart with the lovely Heath Ledger. Labyrinth is still as good today was it ever was – the power of puppets over GCI. It’s a film that has so many adult jokes in it too…. and David Bowie in tights and amazing eye shadow! And I am a total Plastic obsessive watching and quoting Mean Girls far more than I should for a 32 year old! So Fetch! (Regina George is kicking a*s in True Detective!).
I also agree with Point Break – I went to see ‘Point Break Live’ the stage show in a bar when I was in LA which I would wholly recommend! And we went to ride the Lost Boys roller-coaster at Santa Cruz!
Yay! I was waiting for someone else to say Clueless. I still love laugh when her dad tells her she can’t go out wearing next to nothing so she puts on that sheer teeny cardigan. Ahh tartan skirts and little patent backpacks, those were the days!
Here are my top 5 (and it is really difficult, as I am a huge movie fan)
– Dirty Dancing (I never get bored watching it)
– Pretty Woman
– Ghost
– Cruel Intention (the movie AND the soundtrack were very important to me, during my time at university)
– The money pit (I could always laught sooo much, when Tom Hanks is stuck in the floor and nobody home to help him)
I also enjoyed The lost Boys, but the movies above I saw tens of times and I still like them.
Oh, and I forgot When Harry met Sally….
Such a feel-good movie.
Ah, Cruel Intentions is so good. I’ve never seen The Money Pit, but consistently enjoy Tom Hanks movies, so I’m sure I would enjoy!
• The Commitments (I know this one word-for-word)
• The Craft
• Clueless
• Cruel Intentions
and to prove I got further than the ‘C’ aisle in Blockbusters…
• Romeo & Juliet (Baz Luhrmann)
Great films with brilliant soundtracks.
I haven’t seen The Commitments, but I like the rest of your choices so much I’m sure I would Kim! Leo in R&J, sigh…
Clueless, the Craft, Cruel Intentions, Dirty Dancing and Ghost for me too! How hot was Patrick Swayze back in the day?! I think it was probably late teens for me but I also really loved Jack and Sarah. I need to rewatch some of these films again!
Patrick Swizzle (I believe that’s what Just 17 and/or Smash Hits called him!) was the best!
Looks like we all have pretty similar movie choices! For me I loved a good soundtrack and a but of romance. I was Dirty Dancing, Karate Kid and Grease then Cruel Intentions. I once watched Dirty Dancing non stop for a whole day. Rewinding the video always felt like such a waste of time! xx
A whole day?! Best. Day. Ever!
Ah I agree with so many of the above… Clueless, Reality Bites, Karate Kid, Lost Boys, Labyrinth…
Some others I love/loved were… House Party (if you haven’t seen this you are missing out on some spectacular hairstyles..), Coming to America (Eddie Murphy – STILL makes me LOL), Pump up the Volume (in my head it’s similar smarty pants stuff like Reality Bites – Christian Slater is ace in it however I’d like to add I haven’t watched it in years so …!!).
Makes me want to do a movie marathon this chat 🙂
Oh my goodness I totally forgot Pump Up The Volume Lynn, loved that movie and love Christian Slater!
Pump Up the Volume!
Heathers!
So many memories…
Heathers, yes! Another great Winona film…
Robin Hood Prince of Thieves – over and over again!
How could I forget Robin Hood! I will admit to loving it but being rather scared at the same time. You can tell I wasn’t one for horror films (I only managed 5 mins watching Chucky at a sleepover!) xx
Urgh, I hated the Child’s Play films…
Totes agree with Laura about Stand By Me. I still turn away at the dead body bit. My annoying older brother used to mute the sound, pause the video and then tell me it was over when it definitely wasn’t. Used to get me every time.
A film I used to watch on repeat was Swallows and Amazons. Aside from the fact the names were hilarious (who would call their child Titty?!), it was one of those films that made me wish I was in it. Even though I can’t sail and hate camping!
There’s a Swallow’s and Amazong film?! I adored the book. Made me want to sail too. Shame I get seasick!
OMG I LOVE this post, literally been laughing out loud to some of the comments and nodding like the Churchill Dog agreeing with everyones choices.
Still LOVE watching Back To The Future and Karate Kid now with my boys….and I often used quotes from Clueless “OMG I LOVe Josh”
Some others I used to watch tirelessly were Advenutres in Babysitting, Weird Science and Shag The Movie starring Bridget Fonda, Phoebe Cates and Annabeth Gish who went to Murtle Beach to enter a dance contest, nothing at all to do with the you know…..
Lorna x
How could I forget Weird Science?!
Also, Weekend at Bernie’s and Drop Dead Fred.
I love that you watch Karate Kid and Back To The Future with your boys Lorna! Oh my goodness I loved Adventures in Babysitting. Another Elisabeth Shue movie! Didn’t watch Weird Science until I was older and never discovered Shag The Movie, I do love a film that involves some kind of dance competition though…! x
More singing & dancing movies I loved
Breakdance & Breakdance 2 Electricboogaloo!
Sister Act 2
and
Save The Last Dance
I’m sure I’ll be back when I think of more too, feeling very nostalgic & what to watch them all again….
I also watch The Goonies with the boys – I’ve heard recently there is going to be a Goonies 2…….
Lorna x
Massive love for Back to the Future. Obviously the Disney classics are up there for me… Mine were Mary Poppins and Bedknobs and Broomsticks. A bit later… The Goonies and Short Circuit. I think one of my all time faces is still Big Trouble in Little China Guilty pleasure now!
I love The Goonies, starting to think it should have been in my top five…
I’m curled up on the sofa with a cuppa watching Ghost right now. Rock and roll Friday night for me !
Perfect Friday night Claire!
Some kind of wonderful
Breakfast Club
Footloose (the original one)
Brilliant post!
The Craft, Lost Boys, Pretty in Pink, Breakfast Club, Weird Science, Top Gun, Drop Dead Fred, Indiana Jones (come on people, not a single mention of Harrison Ford!?!?), Back to the Future, Now and Then, Labyrinth, Thriller (ok, not a film as such but Michael Jackson was very big in my household!)…Star Wars!!
One of my most top 5 films is High Fidelity – the book it brilliant too! LOVE John Cusack!!!!
