I have never watched much television, in fact, unless you count Neighbours and Home and Away in my school years I have never even watched a soap. I mean I do watch some stuff – there is sometimes a decent 3 part drama on and I do love a good dose of Downton Abbey for pure escapism.
My husband sometimes highlights certain programmes that have received particularly glowing reviews so we’ll watch those together but generally if I have any spare relaxation time (!) then I’ll be reading a magazine or a book, catching up with friends or having a mooch for things to buy, see and do on my iPad.
Every so often however we’ll become totally absorbed in a box set, even more so now we have Mabel – I seem to need that “sit on the sofa and completely lose yourself in fiction” mentality to actually switch off from work 100%.
Whilst I was expecting we became obsessed with Breaking Bad – along with the rest of the world. And then a friend recommended The Good Wife….Oh my goodness. I LOVED IT. I now officially have a huge crush on Julianna Margulies who plays the leading lady Alicia Florrick (pictured above). For those of you that have seen it I can’t believe what happened happened in the last series?! I might have actually cried real tears… and now we’re stuck. Because I don’t really know what box set to watch next, nothing really appeals.
When I say “box set” I realise that’s pretty old skool these days, although I do miss the tangible DVDs purely from a nostalgia perspective. We’ve got Netflix and we’ve had a bash at “Orange Is The New Black”, it’s ok. I’m not sure I like any of the characters enough to really care what happens to them. Except maybe the strange French lady who seems to have been in unrequited love with some bloke called Bernard since she was twelve. James likes it even less than me.
We are both very much enjoying Ray Donovan at the moment, it’s not like anything I’ve ever seen before which makes it particularly addictive. Plus there is something shady/naughty/peculiar happening in every single episode, you literally never quite know what’s going to happen next. For those of you that have no clue what I’m on about, it’s an American crime drama set in L.A, Liev Schreiber plays “Ray” and Jon Voight plays his father. Both are excellent. Apparently the pilot broke records for viewership, I’d recommend you give it a go but there is quite a lot of violence so avoid if you are not a fan of guns and bloodshed. Unfortunately we’ve caught up with the first series and have to wait for a Tuesday evening for an episode of the second. Hence this post. I could really do with your box set/series/Netflix recommendations.
What has been your favourite ever series?
Is there anything you think we would enjoy? We’re not fussed on genre particularly.
We’ve seen the first ever episode of the West Wing recently but I’m not sure I can deal with the fact it’s so very…90’s. How very shallow of me. I’m tempted to watch another just to see if I can see past the bizarrely outdated fashions and technology.
Oh and my guilty pleasure? Got To Dance. Brilliant. My long-term bikini waxing ladies’ son was part of the duo that won the whole thing.
Ahem. Random fact of the day for you there folks!
*Added at 11.43 am, a reader has just reminded me – Top Of The Lake. You HAVE to see it. The acting, plot line and scenery/cinematography are out of this world. One of the best things I’ve seen in years. It’s a drama series set in New Zealand, I was hooked from the first five minutes. Elizabeth Moss (she plays Peggy Olsen in mad men) is bloody amazing.
Oh you have to give The West Wing another chance, some of the greatest writing and acting ever created for the small screen.
I think you’ll love Scandal, the beautiful Kerry Washington (and her perfect wardrobe) and team ‘fix’ the salacious goings on of Washington’s VIPs and there’s some sexy Oval Office action too. Season 3 has just started on Living but the previous two seasons were on More4 so I’m not sure where you can catch up, but do try.
Strictly is back this Sunday on BBC1 so that’s a nice Saturday night fix of sequins and tangos from now until Christmas.
And for some comedy I’m recommending to everyone The Mindy Project (season 2 is currently on E4) it seems to be going under the radar but Miss Kaling is my new hero, (she is the star and writer/producer). The situations are realitic and painfully funny as her and her doctor co-workers are flawed characters navigating New York, work and love but without being too trite like other sitcoms who just want to be like Friends. And it’s a rom com, there’s a subtle storyline between Mindy and her co-worker Danny that in Season 2 is building and the gorgeous Chris Messina (in the new Sam Smith video) is great as the sweet but often grumpy Danny. xx
I was about to recommend Scandal aswell – I’m completely obsessed! If you have Sky then it’s on the Catch up – TV Box Set section and then the new series is on at the moment.
I’ll be following this thread with interest given that we’re heading into Autumn, i.e. cosy nights in with a box of chocolates and a blanket!
Thanks Katie! I’ll have a look later this evening – yay! x
Oh Claire yes I’ve seen some trailers for the latest season of Scandal, looks fab, I will try and find out how we can catch up with it. Never heard of The Mindy project? will definitely look into it x
I really loved Orange Is The New Black but I can see that it’s not everybody’s cup of tea (and my god Piper is beyond irritating!)
My Netflix recommendation is House of Cards – another Netflix original. Kevin Spacey is just brilliant and the supporting cast are just as fantastic. Really good twists and turns and ridiculously addictive.
The Good Wife is on my Netflix to-watch list, as is the rest of Breaking Bad. Love Netflix as I’m really bad at watching series ‘live’. I’m always a few years behind lol.
We’ve got SkyGo as well so I’ve just started watching Veep (US version of The Thick Of It) and I’m loving it already.
Oh and The Newsroom – another Aaron Sorkin drama (same as West Wing). Another SkyGo one unfortunately – bloomin’ HBO and their broadcast rights!
My guilty pleasure? The Vampire Diaries. It’s totally cringe-worthy awful in places but the eye-candy makes up for it (Ian Somerhalder – ’nuff said).
Hi Jo! Piper bless her, she does go on doesn’t she? I love the actress – just not the character!
The Good Wife is my favourite, I preferred it to Breaking Bad actually, I think because I cared about the characters more and I do love a good law and politics drama!
James has watched The Newsroom – loves it, I couldn’t really get into it but at the time I was working in the evening hence him watching it on his tod. x
Breaking Bad pretty much finished off TV, just perfect in every way, the acting, the characters, the storylines! I’ve been trying to fill the void ever since!
We’re currently very much enjoying The Wire, just finished season 2 and it’s highly watchable. Like you I was a bit unsure at first due to it’s age, it goes back to 2002, faxes, pagers even typewriters are prevalent! But persevere past the first couple of episodes and you have a cracking series, again the characters come to life midway, they are all with faults and so as with BB you find yourself getting caught up with them. The police aren’t all goodies, the gangs aren’t all baddies, it’s very realistic for a cop drama. There are definite character similarities between this and BB, I’m sure the likes of Jesse, Saul and Gus were influenced by The Wires characters, similarly the direction and editing.
True Detective is also worth a watch and I presume you’ve done Homeland?
And I concur, there really is nothing on TV anymore! Xx
Hi Vicky! Yep done Homeland, I thought it was excellent, I also have a soft spot for Claire Danes ever since My So Called Life.
We tried to watch The Wire a few years ago but I just couldn’t understand what they were saying, I gave up far too quickly though – I should really persevere if it’s as good as folks say it is x
Ha ha that is me too, I actually put the subtitles on for season one but then again I am as deaf as a doorknob! It took us probably 3-4 episodes to get sucked in, I could have easily of given up but thought there must be more to it and there is, highly recommended xx
Morning! Modern Family is brilliant and definitely worth a watch. There are five seasons, the six season is coming out in a few months. The first two series are available on Netflix. Suits is worth a watch. It is pure escapism and some good characters, it’s based in a New York law firm and is also on Netflix. Did you watch the Returned on the BBC last year? It is a French supernatural drama and it is amazing!! Series two is coming up soon, yay! Final one, The Wire. It’s brilliant!
Hi Kate, never seen The Modern Family but heard a lot about it, SUITS is James’s favourite – I do enjoy it, I find the younger lawyer character annoying though. But I do love Harvey….
Watched the Returned! quite enjoyed it until the last episode, just not entirely sure what I thought about it after that. The more I say what I’ve watched the more I realise I do watch more television that I thought ha ha ha haha. x
Love Modern Family, so funny!
I’m almost afraid to say it – but for pure, toe-tapping entertainment, it has to be Nashville! The acting is somewhat cheesy, but the tunes catchy, it’s compulsive viewing. Definitely more light hearted than others, but worth a try.
Going back a few years – I binge watched Prisonbreak. Everyone said it was rubbish after the first series, but I stuck with it and fell in love with the characters.
Around the same time I also did Brothers and Sisters – coming from a big family, it had a feel good factor.
I also second Scandal – available on 4OD.
Finally, I too cried real tears when what happened happened at the end of season 2 of the Good Wife!
Good luck finding something you get stuck into – there’s nothing I love more than the “should I, shouldn’t I” watch another episode battle!
Ohh…. how could I forget the ultimate series – Grey’s Anatomy!
It’s a roller coaster of emotions and with 10 series, LOADS to catch up on, plus some serious eye candy to enjoy!
If you haven’t tried it, you must – it’s amazing!!
Hi Anna! We watched Prison Break years ago, I thought it was clever, can’t remember what happened in the end though (!)
You know what I really fancy Nashville, I’ve mentioned it to James a few times but I don’t think he’s keen, how can I persuade him?! I quite like a bit of County and Western music though (shhhh don’t tell anyone.)
Grey’s Anatomy – another one on my radar, 10 series would certainly take us right through the winter 🙂
I have to agree with Jo- House of Cards is great, I can’t wait for it to come back on. I was also a very big Prison Break fan.
How about a bit of Danish crime? It is complete escapism and completely switches me off work mode- I loved The Killing and we are now watching the Bridge. For crime without the subtitles Luther is on Netflix. Even if you don’t like it Idris Elba is the main character. And you can just watch him running around on mute…
Oh could I forget – Californication! Nothing complex going on but a great easy watch!
Loved the Killing and we’ve done season one of The Bridge. I’d really like to see The Tunnel (the UK/France version with Clemence Poesy) With the summer we’ve sort of abandoned any effort to watch TV series (especially as I travel for work about 50% of the time) and have instead been watching random episodes of stuff like “48 Hours” and not X-Factor (which I’m not so keen on but my fiance loves – and it’s better than having to sit through another “Judge Judy” which is his other guilty pleasure)
Nashville is awesome. I was very much in to One Tree Hill back in the day and I describe it as a slightly more grown up, musical version of that!
I’ve watched the first three seasons of the Good Wife so far, am saving season 4 as a treat for winter and then hopefully they’ll put season 5 on netflix pretty quickly.
I’ve also watched most of Sons of Anarchy about a California motorcylce club – Charlie Hunnam is in it – pretty hot – and it’s quite violent which I really don’t mind for some reason.
Californication is also really good and my husband and I both loved that. He begged me to give it a try because he’d heard such good reviews and at the end of the first episode I loved it too.
All of these are on Netflix. As is the original series of the Killing which is awesome too!
OH. The Trees (as we called it!) YES. What a blast from the past!! sigh. They don’t make them like that any more.
oh OTH was my life back in the day, how I miss Nathan and Haley and Brooke Davis will always be one of the best characters…Clothes over Bros y’all! xx
One Tree Hill!!!!! I was never a Dawsons Creek girl but I did love OTH. Also The OC, I wanted to actually be Summer Roberts.
Not heard of Californication so thanks for the recommendation, James is going to love all of these suggestions when I tell him later! x
I second the Nashville recommendation. Definitely my guilty pleasure!
My husband and I both loved The Wire. Each series takes a bit of time to get going, but each episode gets better and better. It’s just awesome! Recently we’ve loved Game of Thrones. We’ve not watched S4 yet as we don’t have Sky. Cannot wait for it to be out on DVD! Te characters are amazing and the storyline is always exciting. They’re not afraid to kill off main characters. It’s based on a series of books although I’ve not read them. Hope this helps 😉
Sarah my Mum LOVES game of thrones, she is always going on about the hair do’s and the clothes?! Talking of killing off main characters we had a shocker with Ray Donavan last night – they sort of did exactly that. keeps you on your toes though. x
Oh Anna A- a girl after my own heart. In love with Greys Antomy. I just like that the main character isn’t the normal peppy American blonde. Second Nashville – I just love love Deacon. Walking dead is AMAZING. Watch it now!
I must be the only person alive who didn’t like Breaking Bad, though I think since both my husband and I have Chemistry PhDs we were probably too focussed on the inaccuracies to enjoy the show. What a pair of geeks!
I love The Following with Kevin Bacon & James Purefoy – so much so I wish I hadn’t seen it & could watch it all from the start again (…what was I saying earlier about being a geek…?). The Walking Dead is also amazing, though I was a bit disappointed with the end of the last series. If you like TWD then The Strain is good – it’s directed by the chap who did Pan’s Labyrinth. Think it might be on SyFy but we just stream it online.
Finally, because I’m clearly a perpetual teenager, I also love The Vampire Diaries! Ian Somerhalder is just so beautiful, and the soundtrack is really good too. I’ve even managed to get the other half to half heartedly watch it 😉 Also like Grimm for some mind rot TV.
Ah another TVD fan – nothing wrong with being a teenager at heart 🙂
Lynsey I would love to watch the Vampire Diaries, James will consider Sci Fi but not as far as hot men with fangs unfortunately. My parents have recommended The Following, I have never liked Kevin Bacon though, unsure why, the EE adverts make me want to throw things at the screen. However that is a particularly glowing review, I will certainly have a butchers! x
Has to be Sopranos! Without a doubt, the BEST thing to have ever been on TV! There’s about 85 episodes so quite a commitment but definitely worth it!
I would warn you about the violence/bloodshed but if you’re ok with Ray Donovan then I think you can handle it!
We are also addicted to Ray at the moment. I’m already looking forward to getting home and catching up with it tonight…10pm on Tuesday’s is far too late for me!
Kate! It’s a really good episode!!!!! x
Ooh now I’m even more excited!!
I looooove The Good Wife but I’m still struggling to find anything that lives up to the best show ever – Friday Night Lights (not to be confused with the movie). It doesn’t look like anything you’d be interested to see (about high school football in a small Texas town) but once you get past that I’ve never met a single person who didn’t become absolutely obsessed. My fiance is from the deep south and loves American football so I begrudgingly agreed to watch the first few episodes fully expecting to hate it. Best. Decision. Ever. And unlike Grey’s Anatomy and Nashville (which I also love) it’s a show your husband is likely to enjoy too (which is important if, like my fiance, he sits and makes disbelieving snorting noises throughout any show he’s less-than-impressed by!)
Anna, never heard of Friday Night Lights? sounds different, and therefore interesting. James just falls asleep through anything he doesn’t like, I am yet to make him sit through a whole episode of Strictly 🙂
I love Modern Family Kate, we have the re-runs series linked and like to watch old episodes while we have our tea. I actually laboured to Modern Family so it holds fond memories(!) for that reason also – my waters went at midnight and I was sent home from hospital at 1 am to see how things progressed – for the next four hours I sat on my birthing ball with the TENS on and Modern Family on the TV. I knew it was definitely time to go back into hospital when I literally could not understand what was happening in one episode, the way I usually feel watching Sherlock. When we went back I was 9cm dilated. So it must be one hell of a funny show….
House of Cards on Netflix is just breathtakingly good, the first few episodes settle you into this world of political intrigue and Kevin Spacey is just so watchable and engaging, and then the stakes keep getting higher and higher and you’re left trying to work out exactly what was his plan all along…love it. I also recommend The Thick Of It which I’ve just started watching, also political but with themes you could translate to any workplace really. You need to watch just for the brilliance of Malcolm Tucker.
I’ve also been watching In The Club which is midweek BBC drama, very soapy and you can pick holes a mile wide in the plot and medical situations but lots of fun.
Seconding and thirding The Walking Dead and Grey’s Anatomy, great shows. Grimm is fun (albeit a teensy bit silly in parts).
For more ‘period’ drama, Masters of Sex is very good – it has Michael Sheen in it and is about the dr who carried out the first ever study into the physiology of sex, and how that was reacted to in mid-century America. We’re a couple of episodes into season 2.
And if you like cooking at all, Masterchef Australia is brilliant. And there’s LOADS of it. It’s so much better than UK Masterchef; you feel like the contestants actually learn something, the judges are just cuddly and lovely and there’s none of this ice-cream sabotage that you get on GBBO – everyone really seems to be rooting for each other.
Sara James LOVES Masterchef so I will definitely tell him about the Australian version, thanks so much for the tip x
Me and my husband have been having EXACTLY the same problem recently – there is nothing to watch! We have done all the classics – Sopranos, The Wire, Breaking Bad – and not enough time yet has passed to watch them again. We are eagerly awaiting the next series of Game of Thrones – if you haven’t watched this I urge you to give it a try. I took a lot of convincing to watch it as ‘fantasy’ would defiantly not normally be anywhere near my preferred viewing genres! But it is incredible! Like totally amazing! It’s so much more than it seems, being more about politics and power struggles than dragons and an undead army. The cast are pretty gorgeous too which doesn’t hurt! There is quite a lot of sex and violence though so may not be up everyone’s street.
Apart from that though we have been struggling – we have tried with Orange is the New Black but just lost interest. The same with Penny Dreadful and the TV series of Fargo. We only watched the pilot of Ray Donovan and couldn’t get on with that either.
I feel the same about the West Wing – I think it’s been too long, it’s too old and just really don’t have any interest in American Politics (I don’t really understand how it works!). My husband loved House of Cards on Netflix but I didn’t watch it with him for the reasons stated above.
There are some good series available on catch up – I loved Sherlock and Luther from the BBC if you haven’t seen them.
My sister raves about Hannibal so I think we are going to give that a try next. Hopefully it will keep us going until the next GOT!
Guilty pleasure are Don’t Tell The Bride – I feel it is a bit more staged than it used to be with grooms doing more extreme and ridiculous things – but I basically love all things wedding related so will continue to watch! Also Great British Bake Off (is this even classed as a guilty pleasure these days?). And for some real escapism I love a dose of Keeping up with the Kardashians (my husband HATES it, he he!)
Definitely give Hannibal a go – we thought it was AMAZING – very gorey though
It was only on a couple of weeks ago on BBC 2 but if you didn’t watch The Honest Woman, try and find a way of catching up with that. Maggie Gyllenhaal is just phenomenal.
The Honest Woman was good but a bit of a Homeland rip off style wise but worth watching.
If you’ve not seen Mad Men worth getting series 1 – 6 on boxset – I’ve just finished it and loved it.
Downton Abbey returns in nearly 2 weeks – yay!
Oh and how could I forget Mad Men – if you haven’t seen it at all it is incredible. Each episode cost a million dollars to make due to the detail but in to all the sets and costumes. We are currently waiting for the last half of the last ever series.
We tried watching Masters of Sex as it looked to be a similar genre of period acting however I did not care for it unfortunately.
I think we need to get on to The Killing – we watched the first episode of the Danish version ages ago and just left it but I think that due to all the good reviews it’s worth giving another try.
I know people rave about the Walking Dead too – my husband and I watched up to the second series and again just lost interest! I think we have a problem committing to things! But if something doesn’t keep my engaged then my evenings are too precious to waste on something I don’t like!
I meant to mention Mad Men in this post actually, we were quite late to the party (and I wasn’t sure after the first few episodes) but then we really got into it. I don’t get the attraction with Don Draper though, I find him slightly creepy. But I love Betty! x
I know it’s already been said a couple of times, but Nashville for me is a must see i just love all the country music & cowboy boots!
Kirsty, I have at least 5 pairs of cowboy boots….and I may have just ordered a suede jacket. With tassels x
I’m the same, I don’t watch much TV unless it’s a good series/box set. Loved Breaking Bad while I was pregnant and we also watched SUITS which is great and gets better and better (Lewis is very funny later on) and everyone (apart from Lewis) looks hot in it so it’s an easy watch 🙂
Mad Men is good too, great era for fashion and good settings. It’s not action packed, is quite slow at times but really good to watch old school advertising agency.
We started watching Sopranos when our baby arrived (I’ve seen most of it before). It’s brilliant. The characters are fab, it’s quite violent at times but there’s lots of story around it so you always want to watch the next episode. I’d definitely recommend it. We’ve only got one series left and I’m really going to miss it, so I’ll check out what else others have recommended.
X
Ha ha I should have mentioned Lewis in My Suits response above, he is one of my favourite characters of all time. It’s rare I laugh out loud at the television but he gets me every time. Genius. x
My husband & I have the same problem – we are trying to find something else to watch as we have just finished the last season of Mad Men on Sky catch up – OMG! You HAVE to watch it!!! At first it’s a bit hmmmmmmm, not sure but then the more of Don Draper you see the more you want to watch it! As much as you want to hate him, you can’t help but love him! And oh did I mention, Don Draper is drool worthy?!?!? 😉
Ha ha ha Jenna I responded to a comment above before I saw yours 🙂
We’ve now caught up with Mad Men (turns out we’ve seen more stuff than perhaps I realised) and although I really want to find out what happens at the end of the series I don’t care for DD that much?! Think I’m on my own there though – everyone loves him! x
You have got to watch Mad Men. I’ve flown through 6 series this summer. The styling, attention to detail, superb acting and hot stud main character, Don Draper, makes it one of my favourite series ever.
Also Game of Thrones.
Alison x
Think this has been mentioned but Mad Men all the way. It is fantastic and worked my way through it pretty quickly. Having worked in advertising for a long time I loved all the references and to be perfectly honest wished I had worked in the industry in the 60’s. So much more fun! Also am a secret fan of Nashvile (love how that seems to be everyone’s guilty pleasure!). Hubby has been watching House of cards and the original British version too which is pretty good. xx
You’ve got to try the Scandinavian dramas (all subtitled but really don’t let that put you off). Definitely The Killing, its gripping, all 3 series. The Bridge is along similar lines & then Borgen, Borgen is my favourite of the Scandinavian dramas & similar to The West Wing although don’t let that put you off. The lead role is a fabulous powerhouse of a woman who also has a family, love anything where working mothers (try to) manage it all.
We love Ray Donovan & are huge Sopranos fans, I find them similar.
House of Cards & The Good Wife on our list of what to watch next.
My husband loves Boardwalk Empire & Dexter but I found them both too gruesome (although gripping if I ever walked in whilst he was watching them).
Have tried Mad Men but there just seems too much to get through. You MUST keep going with The West Wing, it’s brilliant.
We’re also about to watch the last Honourable Woman which has been amazing.
Got to love a good Box set, it’s the way forward.
Hi Grainne, from what everyone has said I think we should give the Sopranos a go, especially if it’s similar to Ray.
Quite a few folks have mentioned The Honourable woman as well so I’ll give that a go too, it sounds like my kind of thing x
At the moment I am watching the second season of HART OF DIXIE. I always look forward to sitting on the couch in the evening and watching another episode. It is such a great way to escape the stress of the day. No big problems in BlueBell…
Another great series is REVENGE. I was amazed how addictive it was and I’m waiting now for the third season.
Sopranos is definitly worth watching. When starting the first season I had a little bit of a problem with it as it is that old, however, it was worth ignoring, that there were no mobile phones in the beginning and the cloths looked a little strange.
As so many people here recommend The Good Wife, I think I will try that next.
I love love love The good Wife and totally concur about the what happened happened point and yes there were tears! Though I managed to not finish off the series on more4 so need to have a binge when I locate that series.
Love my scandi noir so The Killing – all three seasons; The Bridge one and two. Also Spiral is a very good crime series set in Paris. I’m now fluent in french swearwords thanks to this show. These are all subtitled which means you do have to concentrate when watching. I have Borgen boxsets that I really must find time to binge on!
Top of the Lake was a really good series, as was The Honest Woman. Find THW a bit more believable than Homeland as the latter is just that bit 24. Agree House of Cards was a SUPER watch too! The Wire and the Sopranos are also first-class watches, albeit they are quite violent and bleak at times.
Christina you just reminded me! Top Of The Lake was the best thing I’ve seen in ages – just updated my post, can’t believe I forgot to include it!
I do love a bt of Scandi Noir, James isn’t as keen but he isn’t completely adverse to it either. x
Revenge is INCRED! You have to watch it Charlotte, it’s like Dallas for our generation and set in the Hamptons. It’s cheesy, ridiculous and utterly amazing.
Is the Good Wife on Netflix or can I catch up on Sky? I am needing a new box set in my life too.
Oh and the other obvious has to be Game of Thrones surely?! It’s mind blowing! (Ha, too much hyperbole?!) But seriously, it’s fantastic television.
Perfect timing Mrs O’Shea as we have come to the end of our box sets too.
Loved The Honourable Woman & Breaking Bad. Enjoy a good episode of Game of Thrones and dare I say it I enjoyed the most recent 24 too.
Fabulous suggestions everyone. I fear I won’t move from the sofa all autumn…
Oh my gosh I LOVE the good wife! I’d be a good wife to Alicia if only she’d take me. Major girl crush. I only saw THE episode of last season last week and I cried like a baby and went off my dinner. Crushed isn’t the word – and I don’t normally get sucked in with things like that!
Anyway, definitely agree Nashville is worth a watch, and as you’re using Netflix, I’d give Dexter a go if you haven’t already. It’s a bit of a strange concept to get your head around – liking a serial killer, but Oh it gets so good! Season 4 with John Lithgow is a treat!
Emma, even my husband was crushed! I had accidentally read about it on google and thought it must be a hoax (!) i.e. the thread was someone having a laugh…. so sad.
I have a few friends that have recommended Dexter but yes, the concept is rather odd! I’m sure he’s only killing baddies though right?
I LOVE a good box set. My recommendations would be 24 (BEST EVER, but you need to devote your life to it!), Homeland, True Blood and The Vampire Diaries.
I clearly have a thing for terrorists and vampires, hum…
I also just watched True Detective but it’s pretty damn dark… Nashville is AWESOME cheesy escapism too!
I have to throw in my 2p… definitely second the suggestions of: Scandal, Luther, The Following and The Sopranos – we have watched them all and they are all fantastic.
The other one you must try is The Shield – 7 seasons of corrupt police, good police and bad guys in LA – simply brilliant! You’ll love it, and I’m sure James will too!
Thanks Kate! sounds like The Shield would be right up James’s street 🙂
I can’t believe no-one has said Boardwalk Empire. It is amazeballs. Next Saturday, the last and final season will start, sniff, sniff. Set in 1930 Atlantic City, New York. You’ve got corrupt officials, gangsters, life during prohibition etc and a lot of amazing clothes. I would watch it just for the dresses alone. But the acting and dialogue and story lines are incredible. Steve Buscemi, Kelly MacDonald, and Stephen Graham from This is England fame, are a stellar cast to name just a few. Someone also mentioned the Wire, which I think is the best thing I have ever watched, in terms of eyeopening, heartbreaking realities. Does anyone like The Walking Dead? I’m quite obssessed with that too. We also have lined up True Detective with Matthew McConnaughy and Woody Harrelson to watch this autumn, which is supposed to be superb. I love Scandal too. The storylines are a bit weak BUT the love affair between Kerry Washington’s Olivia Pope and the Tony Goldwyn’s POTUS (President of the United States) is what has me hanging off of the edge of my seat, and I think anyone else who watches it. Season 4 starts this autumn, too. I’m glad that I just read someone’s comment about the Good Wife as I’m still on the first season and was thinking of ditching it, as I find it a bit boring, but maybe I will persevere. Okay, I’m going to stop now, as I’m starting to sound like the only thing I do is watch tv shows…well actually in the winter, it is!! Other must sees GoT and Curb Your Enthusiasm – hilarious! x Great post. It got everyone talking!
Ok… don’t laugh… but Neighbours is really good just now! (kind of joking. sort of)
Have loved reading through everyone else’s suggestions and mine are pretty similar. First and foremost is The Mindy Project! It is so funny – nothing serious or shocking, just good for a good giggle! I love the relationship between Mindy and Danny. Just brilliant.
I totally loved Prison Break and if I’m honest I have struggled to “get into” anything else since it ended (about 5 million years ago!). Hubby and I both loved Lost (also from back in the day) so if you didn’t try it first time round, definitely give it a go now and persevere!!
My parents randomly love Game of Thrones too and after I watched the first few episodes on their recommendation I was a tad uncomfortable with all the raunchiness!! Cant quite look them in the eye when they bring it up ha! Oh and peeps have mentioned Modern Family too – it is really, really funny!
Loved One Tree Hill (Brooke Davies – best character ever!!) and then got into the new 90210? Hubby managed to tolerate it more than I thought he would, but perhaps Naomi character helped!! 😉
Oh Maddy I’m so glad someone else shares my love of The Mindy Project – why is no one else watching it?!
When on occasion I catch Neighbours I’m always lost because everyone seems new (apart from Toadie, Karl and Susan of course) but next year I’m going to be on maternity leave and I’m hoping it can be my 25min guilty pleasure each day 🙂 xx
Yay to Mindy! I just lover her – I even have a Mindy pinterest board. She instagrams loads too. I am obsessed!!
A week of getting back into Neighbours you will know everyone and what they are about – Paul Robinson is even still in it!! And Karl just wrote a fifty shades style novel and there was a hilarious few episodes of everyone on the street guessing who wrote it. You just cant make this stuff up!
ps New Girl was BRILLIANT series 1 and 2 (Schmidt another totally original and hilarious character) but losing its sparkle third series in.
Oh my lord Karl Kennedy the dirty novelist, so wrong lol!
Yes I love Mindy’s instagram and if you haven’t read her book ‘Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And other concerns)’ you should check it out.
And totally agree about New Girl, I’m not sure if it’s because Nick and Jess are together but it’s definately lost something. Thank god Big Bang Theory is still about especially after the end of HIMYM xx
Definitely stick with The West Wing – it’s great. Thankfully my husband hasn’t seen it so it gives me the perfect excuse to watch it again. Other series I would recommend, and not mntioned above, are Castle (pure escapism), Criminal Minds (has seriously freaked me out at times) and Firefly (one for the sci fi geeks).
Completely forgot about Firefly – brilliant show. And Castle – only just started watching. Saw the first two series on Netflix, then started watching the rest on Sky box sets and then they took it off! Where am I going to get my Castle/Beckett fix now?!
I’ve been looking at this post and wondering when it’s appropriate to share my Castle addiction… I got into the show last year when I was home alone and didn’t know what to watch… ended up buying the rest of the series on DVD and then Apple TV! I seriously think my husband is dreading series 7 starting again soon… the goods news is that the DVDs are on amazon quite reasonably if you need a Castle/Beckett fix!
Aside from this, I also love Mindy – she’s hilarious. Plus, Revenge is so bad it goes full circle it is good again. SUITS is just amazing as well, the story lines are so smart. Recently, we’ve got into Episodes with Matt LeBlanc and Tamsin Greig and Stephen Mangan – it’s set in LA with Tamsin and Stephen as two British writers for a sitcom. It’s really funny and Matt LeBlanc is great in it!
I think I may end up repeating everyone elses recommendations but The Honorable Woman was amazing – plot line was great – v smart and made you think. Also sadly quite topical at the moment! You may have to wait for boxset as I don’t know if iPlayer will have all the episodes.
Grey’s Anatomy is great – if you’ve never seen it I recommend starting at the beginning as the first 2 seasons are cracking.
The Good Wife – my Mum got me into this and then I got my husband into it. Sad face at last season 🙁 I love Alan Cumming in this – I think he steals every scene and all the cameos are amazing!
We are loving Game of Thrones and trying to catch up on the last season.
I can’t recommend Borgen enough – it’s really amazing. The Killing was also fab and The Bridge! We need more Scandi drama in our lives…
Have you watched any of Luther? I think they are on Netflix – deffo worth a watch.
I haven’t seen any of 24 before but I watched the last season set in London and can recommend. I may go back and watch from the beginning – that is going to be a hell of a commitment but since winter is coming….
Am delighted Strictly is about to be back on the telly! Oh and Neighbours IS my guilty pleasure! What can I say I love Australia and I like the sillyness as well as silly storlines haha.
I’m going to write down some of the recommendations from peeps – great thread!
Oh and I forgot Girls – Charlotte I think this may be for you. It’s brilliantly written and totally different. Stick with the first couple of episodes as you get used to the er more graphic non sexy stuff!
Lynn I need to write everything down too! so many great recommendations 🙂
I’ve seen Girls advertised/mentioned all over the shop, it sounds super, would James like it?!
Yes – initially my hubbie was a bit hmmmm but we’re both watching the latest season and he thinks it’s brilliantly written and v funny! Some of the characters you hate in the first season you’ll love by the third! Give it a whirl!
Grey’s Anatomy all the way! its a really good story line and there are like 10 seasons to catch up on!
Totes forgot about Grey’s – I loved it! Was totally obsessed when we had Virgin, then we moved house and we’re stuck with council telly…boo 🙁 think I’m stuck way back in season 3 or 4????
I have HUGE love for Criminal Minds – fantastic if you’re not squeamish as its about a group of FBI profilers who chase and catch serial killers, and general crazies! Its BRILLIANT! Good plots throughout which are freshened up with plot twists for the main characters – why is Morgan so brooding? Will Emily stay or go? All will be reveled in the next episode!!! I am having CM withdrawal as we don’t have Sky/Virgin etc only Freeview so am stuck waiting on the next series coming out on DVD!
Also got into 24 as I missed it the first time round, borrowed my friends DVDs and fired through them…loves the Kiefer!
Also How I Met Your Mother – brilliant fun! Always a good laugh 🙂
Have to agree with a lot of other posters, The Sopranos is simply the best TV ever produced – in my opinion! Each episode is almost like a mini movie. Another series I loved was The Wire, takes a while to get into but stick with it. Also, what’s not to love about Idris Elba starring as an American bad boy gangster?!
I love greys! It gets a bit weaker towards the later seasons for me but the first six are good with gripping finales! We loved Dexter and still watch it from time to time it’s so addictive! Breaking bad David loved and I liked it but not as much as everyone else until the end. We have got house of cards to start and also fancy the good wife. We both loved Hannibal one and two and i have a bit of a thing for mr Claire Danes Hugh dancy! Other than good wife I thought scandal looked good. I love box sets when you get really into them as we don’t watch much tv either other than master chef and bake off though we both oddly love top models cos of the catty girls and competitive nature! Good luck with them! Ps I used to love ally McBeal and the OC! X
Ally McBeal!!!!! I LOVED that show.
Did I say I didn’t watch much television……?
We love Grey’s Anatomy. Bones and Arrow are good too. True Detective was amazing and I’ve heard lots of people recommend The Tunnel but not watched it yet.
I’m currently loving The Mindy Project. It’s hilarious and the thing I most look forward to watching at the moment. My sisters addicted to Once Upon a Time too.
Who is the French one on orange is the new black. I can’t for the life of me think who it is! Am I having a memory lapse?x
She was in the same room (dorm?) as Piper when she moved from the um…orange bit. There was rumour she murdered someone but as far as I watched, her story was never “revealed” as it were.
The older black lady?
Lol as a french woman i can tell you she is. NOT french !! …russian 😉 or at least she is playing a russian lady
I love Master’s of sex. It’s easy watching, but I love the style of it. The women are incredibly glamorous!
We tend to watch lots of American Dramas. At the moment we are into Under the dome (based on the Stephen King novel) and The 100, which is a post apocalyptic drama about a group of misfits that get sent back to Earth after living in space for a generation (I think it’s one of those things you have to watch to get it’s appeal).
We are also obsessed with Game of Thrones! We haven’t got Sky so have to wait for the DVD, but it’s brilliant!
I didn’t really like Breaking Bad all that much, but I am enjoying Orange is the new black.
I also love a good period drama, so can’t wait for the return of Downton. But we watched The Village and The Mill to fill the hole.
Trash wise I have to say (very quietly) that I am a bit partial to Made in Chelsea. I know it’s bad, but it’s brilliant in a truly awful way! My husband has to leave the room when it’s on.
Finally GBBO. I’m loving this series so far, bingate was brilliant, although I did feel a bit sorry for Diana. The editors really dropped her in it.
Ohhhhh totally forgot New Girl!! I have a total girl crush on Zooey Deschanel. That girl can do no wrong!
You know what? I have never seen a single episode of GBBO, which is odd as I like cakes. A lot.
It’s James who I catch watching the trash telly, even celebrity Big Brother….. x
I rewatch boxsets of greys anatomy constanty- I love it! I wish I had a meridith and Christina in my life!!
Breaking bad – amazing
Prison break – amazing
True detective – amazing
24 – amazing
Realise most of these are past shows but they are gripping and hubby will like them too!
I too am a huge fan of the good wife and love a boxset.
If you like Downton, BBCs The Paradise is probably better. The West Wing is excellent, stick with it and you’ll get hooked – brilliantly written. Others I like are House of Cards, Grey’s Anatomy, 24, House, and Modern Family.
You have all forgotton one -Friday Night Lights. It seams ye all love Connie Britton in Nashville but Friday Night Lights is where she comes into her own. Its the perfect series
You MUST watch True Detective with Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson. Amazing telly.
Oh and Game of Thrones!!!
What about Dexter? We have just started watching it and are addicted…. it’s like a Homeland/American Pyscho!!
I LOVE watching box sets – I rarely watch regular TV anymore. It took me a while to get into OITNB but I now really like it.
Also worth watching are Parks & Recreation (Amy Poehler is brilliant) and Once Upon a Time. I also love Modern Family and Nashville.
Next on my list is Scandal!
It HAS to be Luther… I wish I hadn’t eat he’d them so I could watch them again!
Just running out but before I go… Try
Boston Legal; William Shatner and James Spader. Legends.
<3
If you don’t mind subtitles then I would definitely recommend Borgen, I totally wasn’t expecting to like it as much as I did. Also not exactly a box set as such but another one I’ve just got around to watching which I recorded a while ago is Hinterland, kind of a Welsh take on the dark Scandinavian dramas. My guilty pleasure is Chicago Fire, what’s not to like about a group of firemen?!
Oh The Good Wife ….it´s my drug !!!!! I LOVE IT!!!!
I am also watching Scandal, Orange is the new black ( i understand your concerns but watch a bit more épisodes and it becomes better)
New Girl… Very funny.
House of cards ….really really good
Sherlock when it´s on ( only 3/4 show per season)
My husband likes Game of throne a lot but i fell asleep every.single.time lol
That’s it for the advice from a french lady living in Lisbon, Portugal 😉
I LOVE the good wife, been totally addicted since the first episode. I am also very like yourself and fizzle out of series or find myself reading a book instead of watching. I do however have two other major addictions. The west wing. Oh my god. My life is no longer the same all I want to do is keep watching to the point that I haven’t been out in three weekends in a row! Really cannot recommend it enough, seriously clever and witty writing with fantastic actors who have you hooked every minute. Also funny at totally unexpected moments – josh on a stag do have to say my favourite moment without giving too much away.
Also the newsroom, starting the second series this autumn also a very clever, witty and addictive series that I am ridiculously excited about now that it is coming back.
Seriously from someone who gets bored of tv so easy it infuriates everyone I know I cannot recommend these two enough!!!
Thinking of some more, definitely echo the recommendations of House of Cards, True Detective and The Mindy Project. All brilliant.
I watch a lot of US TV series!
If you love the Good Wife, you might LOVE Suits which is on Dave – more fun legal with great outfits and sexy lawyers! My other recommendations are Scandal and Greys Anatomy got me through the early days when my daughter was born. I made it through 4 series in very quick time – something to do with McDreamy and McSteamy ……… Hmmm……..
Enjoy xx
Oh it’s GOT to be The Sopranos. Yes there’s violence but it’s so much more than that and it’s addictive. Do it!
I lived The Wire and having to have sub titles didn’t ruin it for me. After season 1 things move location and outside the Towers you’ll need sub titles a lot less!
True Detective was excellent but very dark and creepy. I love Matthew McConaughey though.
I also second (cror third or fourth) Modern Fanily – best comedy since Friends! Also Parks and Recreation – SO FUNNY!! The US Office is also brilliant – if you can get over the first season copying the UK office season 1 then the rest is original and comedy gold.
This has been such a useful post!! I am expecting, due in 2 weeks and have just got Netflix! Have been watching Breaking Bad (very behind I know!) but starting to lose interest. Thanks for the other recommendations! I can now fill my maternity leave with box sets 🙂 x
We really enjoyed Brothers and Sisters and Ally McBeal last winter!
