Before I begin I just want to point out that actually, I often apply make-up using my fingers. I simply don’t have the time to whip out 57 brushes every morning and apply my maquillage like a pro. However, if I do want precision and certainly more long-lasting results I absolutely make the effort to use the proper tools.
Over the years I’ve invested in more brushes that I care to mention (although I reckon 57 wouldn’t be far off) but there are only five or so that I use on a semi-regular basis so thought I would review. Interestingly I recently realised my recommended few are all at the budget end of the market. Who knew? Especially considering I distinctly remember once spending forty five quid on a “blusher applicator”. I don’t have the first clue where this piece of unnecessary equipment even is.
Note to self: in 2015 stop impulse buying crap.
Ecotools
(first and last in row above)
I read about this brand in some magazine or other, it was given MAJOR raves due to the softness of the bristles, the lack of shedding and the bargain price point. The Kabuki is as good as any other far more spendy versions I’ve tried yet was only £9.99 from Boots. I use it to blend/apply my fancy balls, bronzer or plain old loose powder, it doesn’t pick up too much product and isn’t in any way scratchy.
The small angle brush was part of a an eye-enhancing duo, £6.99 also at Boots. I do use the other one in the set, just not as much. I use the pointy angled end to add a swoosh of gold shadow underneath my peepers when I’m looking tired (that will be most of the time then) and the fluffy bit for blending shadow on the lid.
Real Techniques
(second and forth in row above)
I love these. I bought a discounted set AGES ago which I may have in fact mentioned on here. The multi-tasking domed brush is excellent for applying mineral powder foundation (I like Elizabeth Arden) and making it look flawless and not to “done”. I whoosh the brush around, tap of the excess and “buff” it into my skin, taking extra care around my nose and other reddish areas for extra coverage. At present I can only see it available in the Travel Essentials kit on Lookfantastic.com however, I’ve heard the that the Expert Face brush is very similar.
The “small setting brush” is an odd one in that I use it to apply blush. Perhaps it’s my random moony face shape but I find “big” blush brushes difficult to control and I end up having large splodges of pink all across my cheeks rather than specifically the apples. This is perfect for precision – either enhancing aforementioned apples or creating a more chiseled/look-at-my-AMAZING-cheekbones look.
It’s £7.99 and worth every penny.

The concealer brush is super, I use it to blend my Estee Lauder BB brush on glow Glow underneath my eyes, in the inner corners and anywhere else I need some lightening and lifting. It’s very gentle and apparently has built in anti-bacterial properties. It is also only £3.95.
So folks, what brushes do YOU use?
Any that you couldn’t live without?
Any you use for a different purpose to what they are intended as per yours truly and the setting brush for blush?
This is probably going to be an odd question! I have a really nice set of brushes but I barely use them as I keep thinking i’ll have to wash them after every use if I’m not using the same colours each time (I do like to mix it up!). What does everyone else do? Also how often do you wash your brushes? Thanks!
Hi Nicola, a little tip for you here – http://rockmystyle.co.uk/how-to-deep-clean-your-make-up-brushes/ x
Mmm, I am the complete opposite. Thanks to my wedding last April I have a pretty good stash of fancy make up brushes now.. I thought it was worth the investment instead of paying someone to do my make up!
I use Mac brushes for my face and eyes – I use this brush for my foundation http://www.maccosmetics.co.uk/product/146/26843/Products/Brushes/Face/187SH-Duo-Fibre-Face-Brush/index.tmpl It’s one of those with sparse longer bristles which I find good for applying a light coverage of my foundation (Estée Lauder double wear light) and then blending it in gently. I also use these two brushes for eye make up the 239 eye shader brush http://www.maccosmetics.co.uk/product/145/383/Products/Brushes/Eye/239-Eye-Shader-Brush/index.tmpl which is brilliant for quick eye shadow application and this soft pencil brush http://www.maccosmetics.co.uk/product/145/386/Products/Brushes/Eye/219-Pencil-Brush/index.tmpl which is great for under the eyes and applying definition in the crease and sides to create a smokey eye – which was my wedding day shadow of choice and my go to for a night out.
I also have some Bobbi Brown brushes. I have the blush brush http://www.bobbibrown.co.uk/products/2280/Brushes-etc/Brushes-and-Tools/Cheeks/index.tmpl which did cost me £35 and in hindsight I probably could have found a cheaper one elsewhere but it was for the wedding.. And their concealer blending brush – http://www.bobbibrown.co.uk/product/2282/8209/Brushes-etc/Brushes-and-Tools/Face/Concealer-Blending-Brush/Award-Winner/index.tmpl which is a brilliant all rounder.. Oh, and I have the Bobbi Brown eye liner brush for their gel eyeliners and that too is pretty awesome.
That’s not to say I wouldn’t try cheaper brands for brushes though so these recommendations are great. But I can highly recommend all of the brushes above. I’ve used them pretty much every day for the last year and they’re all still in perfect condition.
I love make up. I’m coming towards the end of my pregnancy which means I no longer take pleasure in shopping for clothes and heels. Make up and skin care seems to be my only outlet at the moment. Other than baby grows and grobabgs. But my husband has said I’m not allowed to buy any more of them..
Thanks for the recommendations Jennifer! You sound like quite the brush professional! I can never get the hang of the gel liner on myself (others yes but not my own eyes!) and I had a graphite ink BB one for Christmas so I need to start practising! x
I have steel ink! I taught myself by watching this video from Lisa Eldridge – http://www.lisaeldridge.com/video/1744/signature-kitten-flick-eyeliner/#.VK0NhV7RaoJ.mailto Xx
Love her!!! Did you see she just got appointed Creative Director at Lancome? x
Thanks both!
Oh MM Gee – that is like a DREAM JOB.
(except blogging of course….) x
I mainly use mac brushes. I have a foundation brush and eye liner brush, an eye shadow brush and a blending brush. I lost my blusher/powder brush and couldn’t stomach buying another mac brush so panic bought one of the eco brushes from boots and I am SOLD. Softest brush I’ve ever used and keeps its shape really well. Thumbs up from me!!
I also like the handles on ecotools – which I appreciate has NOTHING to do with their performance but…
I was just thinking how nice the handles looked. Easily distracted….
YES THE HANDLES. They’re lovely arent they! Are we strange??
Real Techniques have also just brought out a fancy schmnacy high end set of brushes which are moe expensive that i’m keen to get my paws on!!
Nicola, I have not seen these?! although I really MUST NOT buy them.
*Off to have a butchers though*
They are weighted and all that stuff. Aimed at Makeup Artists and people like me who go ‘oooooo, I really am skint but must have a new blending brush that costs £30!’. x
I vote Ecotools too – although I only have a foundation brush it is really good and was a bargain in TK Maxx. Having said that, I do have Bobbi Brown blusher and bronzer brushes which I have had for years, literally, and they are great. I am bad at washing them but they last forever. I have some cheapies from Boots for concealer and a Bodyshop and No7 one for eyeshadow. I think Bodyshop brushes are usually good value. I always use brushes as seems to make the slap last longer.
I love my bare minerals concealer brush although use it for Benefit Boing concealer, and have a MAC blusher brush which is kind of contoured; I bought it more years ago than I care to remember but it keeps going and I’d be lost without it!
Don’t know if anyone else uses Bare Minerals but I think the foundation brush that comes with the powder stuff is rubbish – I have to buy a new brush pretty much every time I buy a new powder as all the bristles keep falling out, definitely not worth the money.
Kim try the Ecotools Kabuki!
I love Zoeva brushes, and also use the Ecotools ones
Oooh not heard of these Ali.
So glad to hear good recommendations for Ecotools – I’m shifting all my make-up to vegan, and had my eye on these but was wondering if I shouldn’t invest more. After hearing how good they are I think I’ll start with these and see how I go! I tend to go bare faced except for a bit of cream blusher, lipstick and mascara but I want to try to get into using a bronzer and eyeshadows a bit more, and have been avidly reading Sali Hughes’ book for tips, so will definitely need a couple of brushes at least.
Oooh not heard of these Ali.
Perfect timing. I just lost my blusher brush. How is that even possible?!
I’ve got a combo of real techniques, MAC and random cheapies but I’m definitely going to check out the ecotools ones
I love Ecotools. I mostly use my fingers to apply make up but bought this set ahead of my wedding http://m.boots.com/mt/www.boots.com/en/EcoTools-Bamboo-6-Piece-Brush-Set_1051154/ and found them really good value for money
The majority of my brushes are real techniques with the odd one from ecotools and lilylolo thrown in. I’m after another kabuki type brush and am definitely going to have a look at that ecotools brush after this post.
Super Sarah, glad we could help!
I have an enormous fluffy brush that I use for doing my powder that I bought from Sephora probably far too many years ago to still be using it – but I love it and they don’t make it any more!
Bryony Real Techniques do a big fluffy brush, might be worth a look x
I use MAC brushes, I’ve had most of them for years and they just keep going. They really have been good value. The only brush I bought and never really use is my foundation brush, I tend to be really lazy and use my fingers. I will have to have a look at Ecotools though!
That’s the thing Alex, if they last years and you use them often then actually, even the more expensive brushes can be excellent value. Foundation brushes fascinate me!
I’ve just been considering buying new make up brushes as I don’t love my Bare Minerals foundation brush so this is a very well timed post. Will definitely have a look at the Ecotools Kabuki.
I would like suggestions on good lip brushes. I wear a few bright lipsticks, the Clinique matte ones are lovely, but there are no corresponding coloured lip liners. This is fine whilst the lippies are new and still have a point, but now the point is rounding, I’m losing precision…
I love RT brushes, really want the new ones they have just brought out as I’m obsessed with rose gold at the moment and they would look very nice on my dressing table. They are actually made by the same company as Eco Tools.
I’ve never used any concealer brushs but I might have to take a look into them soon after this article.
