As I mentioned in my Spring purchases feature I kind of always do a capsule wardrobe of sorts. A couple of classic “investment” pieces every season mixed in with various current high street favourites.
I am slowly regaining my fashion mojo after over 18 months of wardrobe boredom, lack of confidence and requiring more “practical” items after the birth of my daughter. The first thing I did when I had that initial light bulb moment of “Seriously, stop over thinking everything and just buy yourself something you really really want” was a ridiculously expensive pair of over-the-knee boots…
I need clothes that will work hard – literally, mix and match easy-throw-on garments that are suitable for client meetings, jumping on and off tubes and more often than not, take you from work day straight to bar/and or restaurant. Adam and I are in London increasingly frequently these days and in industries where there is a hell of a lot of chic, I don’t want to be worrying about what I’m going to wear – a few outfits in a carry on hold all and zero time to think about it once I reach my destination is just how it is. Much goes for at home too, I would rather spend any spare time I have with Mabel rather than throwing a full on “I have NOTHING TO WEAR!” wobbler in front of my closet (happens.)
The items I’m wearing in the slider above and listed below are easily mixed/worn with all of my Spring purchases in one way or another. I finally feel as though I’m making progress with figuring out my personal style….although there’s no denying I can’t resist having a peek at what’s “new” every few days or so online.
The Over-The-Knee Boots: Stuart Weitzman Highland £595
Thought I’d throw it in at the beginning that yes, I spent nearly six hundred quid on a pair of suede boots. This is the most I have ever spent on any single clothing item ever. And after not being able to part with as much cash even for a designer bag, came as a surprise to me too.
They are super SUPER comfy. I wear them a LOT. Over skinny jeans, over tights with shorts, to dress up a swishy summer dress instead of throwing on some flip-flops…..and I look after them well. Price per wear these are already less than some of my £80 ish high heel mistakes I used to make fairly often.
I actually bought these boots last Autumn but have added them in to the list as I didn’t for one minute consider I might wear them in the warmer months. But I do, and they are very much still available, they even now do them in a rather lovely charcoal grey…..*sigh*
If you are looking for a HUGE treat to yourself then head on over to Russell & Bromley to purchase yourself a pair.
The Flared Jeans: Zara £39.99
I wear a flared jean whether they happen to be in vogue or not – they are the most flattering shape (particularly when paired with a half decent heel) for my short legs. At the moment flares are very much on trend (anyone else cannot help saying this in the voice of Gok Wan?) which means they are readily available. Winner.
Not all flares as it turns out are created equal, however, after trying all sorts of brands my favourites are from Zara. Which is a good thing as they are reasonably priced, and I need to make some savings somewhere after spending so much on the ruddy boots.
Zara calls them a “low-rise skinny bootcut” I haven’t a clue why, they are as flared as any others I’ve tried. The denim is soft and stretchy and they keep their shape – I have this design in the blue wash too.
The Swishy Dress: Reformation $78 – $218 approx
I wear floral frocks in winter as well as summer, they are my snippet of feminine in an otherwise fairly masculine wardrobe. My favourite brand right now is Reformation, based in L.A and discovered by me on instagram. I fell head over heels for their “Damsel” dress and have bought several designs since. In the photographs I’m wearing a bluebell print which is very pretty and was a bargainous $60 in the sale a few months ago.
I sign up for their newsletter which is witty and notifies you of discounts and price reductions. The Mckendrie is currently on my wishlist.
The Casual Trouser: J Brand Tavi £250.00
About 4 years ago I invested in the J Brand “Flight Pant” in grey, not a million miles away from this “Tavi” design and a similar price point. They were worth every penny – I wear them weekly (if not more often) all summer and they work with trainers, flat sandals and a killer heel depending on the look you favour. I had always wanted a black pair and these are available in both black and a khaki green at Selfridges.
For casual I wear them with a loose vest and slouchy cardi with my much recommended trainers and to dress them up I whip on the strappy platforms (the coral pair I’m wearing with the flared jeans are a very recent purchase from H&M and only £24.99) and a camisole tucked in at the waist.
The Satchel: Topshop £30 approx
Sorry sorry….another item no longer available. I am a new found fan of the satchel (yes I know, possibly about 2 years behind everyone else) but I think they look smart and are surprisingly roomy. Perfect for an iPad, iPhone, make-up, small purse, notebook and pen.
This 70’s leather version is lush though.
I haven’t listed every item I’m wearing as this feature would be way too long but please do feel free to ask about anything in the comments box below and I’ll do my very best to advise (any excuse to talk about clothes ha!)
Please do let me know about any working Mum clothing recommendations you have up your stylish sleeves, I’m actually on the hunt for a couple of cute maxi dresses as I seem to be struggling this year (or maybe just looking in the wrong places?)
Oh I love those boots!!!!!! I’m in a similar situation a la “I have nothing to wear” wardrobe wobblies! I gave birth to our first child, Florence Scarlett, 7 weeks ago and as I am breastfeeding it’s really difficult to find things that are stylish and practical. It turns out a lot of my pre-preggo wardrobe is high necked. Who knew?! So now I feel as though I’m living in the same old stretchy vest tops and huge (dignity saving) scarf. I don’t want to but too many things as won’t be BF for ever but nevertheless feel stuck in a huge style rut where my current clothes don’t feel like me. I think I need to invest in a small post pregnancy/pre child eating solids capsule wardrobe for the summer months. Thanks for the inspiration. X
PS I’ve just bought this maxi from next. They had quite a good selection http://www.next.co.uk/g4d28s2#941035g30
Lovely! Thanks for the tip 🙂 my other comment just did something weird and went to the bottom of the page but I did respond to your first note too x
When I was breastfeedibg I bought some plain black boob tubes from Primark to wear under normal tops. Then I could just take my arm out of my top and pull the boob tube down. Not as practical as other breaatfeeding contraptions but it meant I could wear some of my old clothes which made me feel better!
I can’t believe I’ve failed to spell breastfeeding correctly twice in that tiny post..
Excellent tip Jennifer!
Oh that’s a good idea! It would be nice to be able to wear clothes I actually own and like! Thanks for the tip! X
Hi Suzie! I must admit, I found clothes for BF difficult. I was lucky as it was March and cold so bought a few nice but fairly loose fitting jumpers from Boohoo.com.
Have you had a butchers at a patterned kimono? They are quite on trend now to wear with jeans etc and would look pretty over a vest, easy to undo as well x
Silly but I’d not even thought about kimonos! Even though I’m living in the same cardigan and the purpose of both items would be the same. Also I’d seen a lovely kimono jacket in River Island that I how have the perfect excuse (will use the word ‘reason’ if hubby enquires about me needing more clothes!) to purchase! X
I *love* the highland boots! My husband bought them for Christmas & I wore them loads when it was cooler but this post has given me inspiration to wear them with summery outfits!
High Five to the Highland Emma! I find they really work for this kind of sunny but not-that-warm weather, particularly in the evenings x
In terms of summer capsules I have slowly been updating my wardrobe but on a much more conservative scale since I am on maternity leave! I’ve bought 3 new pairs of skinny jeans from Asos. Surprisingly good petite range! And a selection of tops and tshirts from Gap and Zara. Next stop is summer dresses where I think I might look at Boohoo.. And I really have my heart set on a couple of midi skirts but can’t seem to find any so the search continues! My husband did buy me a Marc Jacobs bag for our anniversary so my accessories are in a different level to my wardobe – which I quite like to be honest!
Loving the non tshirt and the Bardot dress. My thighs would not allow those boots to work, but they are pretty awesome!
I actually found that cute accessories made me feel better Jennifer – especially as I was wearing a LOT of black! I’ve not tried ASOS petite (I am just shy of 5″ 4 so on the cusp but “regular” clothes are often cut too big/tall) so will check it out. Have you had a look at Mango recently? They do some lovely pieces and very reasonable too x
I am rubbish at accessorising!! I wear the same silver bangle and my wedding and engagement ring every day and nothing else! Oh, apart from scarves, I have a pretty good collection of those.
This post has inspired me though and I’ve just bought a green daisy print sundress and a nude midi skirt from Asos.. Who are having 20% off if you purchase through your app..
And I do love Mango. Bought a coat and leopard print jumper for my autumn winter wardrobe from there a couple of weeks ago! Xx
Oh no. Discovering reformation is going to be very dangerous. I love a pretty floral dress a little bit too much! And those boots….
This has definitely encouraged me to have a bit of a wardrobe overhaul and go for more of a capsule approach. More economical on the wallet and my tiny wardrobe space! xx
Hi Emma! I am currently organising my closet so stuff is easier to see/find too – makes life so much easier and more efficient!
I would LOVE a giant walk in wardrobe one day……x
This is such a timely post. I had my little girl 8 days ago and went to look for clothes to BF in yesterday with no real success. Didn’t want to spend much as still don’t know how the feeding is going to go as we’re having some weight gain issues, but love the kimono idea with a vest top and the boob tube idea.
Also love the boots but think things like that may need to wait until the return to work!
Hi SD! There are some pretty Kinomos on Mango, ASOS and Oasis – have a butchers. For boob tubes I like H&M, super cheap but wash fairly well.
I bought my boots 7 months after having Mabel – they were a luxury gift to myself, we all deserve one I think xx
Ohmygawd, those boots are crazy hot on you, Charlotte! As much as I wish I could pull that off, I’m not sure I could! I totally love all the Stuart Weitzmann shoes in Russell & Bromley, they’re so gorgeous but also really comfy – such a shame they’re also really expensive! 😉
I bought this Almari dress a while ago (http://www.closetlondon.com/almari-blue-cap-sleeve-godet-dress.html) and had three compliments on it from girls looking for similar dresses when I wore it last week! It also comes in hot pink which I’m tempted to get – the blue is great as it’s pretty but also good for work as it’s a nice length etc.
I’ve been all over Mango recently, they’ve got some lovely trousers although the zip on one of the pairs is a bit rubbish so may need to take them back. They’ve got some lovely tops and quite a bit on sale at the mo. I’m also a total sucker for Banana Republic – they sometimes have things on sale that are worth looking at and their clothes *last*.
LOVE that shape of dress Kate, my Damsel by Reformation dress is very very similar – I like that it’s kind of a bit prim (?!) but also flirty at the same time ha!
Also Closet London?! Why have I not heard of this before?! x
Prim but flirty – that’s exactly it, haha!
I haven’t actually bought anything from Closet but it looks pretty good – I bought that Almari dress at John Lewis but it’s been priced back up at £58 there whereas it’s under £30 on Closet.
I’m so ready to switch up my summer wardrobe. I’ve been doing the 37 piece capsule (just started this spring) and have loved it but am feeling ready to change to summer, astonishingly not because I’m bored, but because the weather is actually getting too warm for the pieces I have. Gosh that seems so grown up and sensible?!
Flares are top of my wish list. I agree, they are the most flattering shape on most legs. I have some indigo topshop ones I love but have put them aside for autumn as they’re that thick-not-very-summery denim and am on the look out for a nice light pair of faded denim ones. I’ve not done Zara jeans before but what are they like length wise? These are sitting in my basket http://www.zara.com/uk/en/woman/jeans/flared/bootcut-denim-jeans-c401001p2687013.html I’m only just over 5’6 but must have odd proportions as I have to get tall jeans… and slightly short flares are the reason it’s been far easier to live in skinnies. Are yours altered or are they right for you at 5’4?
Is that a cardy with leather sleeves?? I love that. Tell me more about it!
Love those J Brand trousers too – I have some similar from French Conection sitting in my capsule wardrobe that have only had 2 outings despite being 1 of only 37 things. You’ve inspired me to get them out a little more.
The boots though are amazing. Over knee boots with skinny jeans is one of my very fave looks ever… I’m so stuck in a slouchy comfy rut at the moment and my over-knee boots have not been out of the storage box in the loft for a long time 🙁
Ahh I love summer clothes shopping!
Hi Amanda! The good news is the Zara jeans are LONG, mine are way to long for me – even with a 6inch shoe, I need to get them altered, they will be absolutely fine for you.
The cardi is from H&M, I wear it all the time – I also bought it for two friends recently as they commented on it (both working Mums) and it’s such a useful piece! I think it was about £12.99 (!) x
Amazing thank you – and oh yes, just seen the model wearing them is way taller than me and they are still down to the floor on her.
Ahh I can’t see the cardy anywhere 🙁 I think it might be all sold out but think there is a similar jumper… just in time for my errrr… summer capsule.
Oh God, since losing the weight, I’ve become a shopping ANIMAL. I never noticed until a few weeks ago, but I lost the love… it’s back with avengence now thank god, so I’m going to be all over those Reformation frocks.
Anyone in the market for a decent satchel should have a look at a scouse fave – The Leather Satchel Company. They’re based just up the road from my house, which is always a bonus (shop local & all that) and their bags are they greatest thing ever… http://www.leathersatchel.com/
xx
Karen the reformation frocks are lush. I love a bit of swish. I think I might have to have a look at those satchels….although with this capsule thing in mind really I should only have the one. Ahem. x
Charlotte – great post. I had a baby a few weeks ago and am dreading a summer feeling wobbley, with nothing that fits!! So in light of the fact I don’t want to buy any spendy clothes just now, please can I ask where your necklaces are from? And can you engrave the bar one? Thanks!
Hi Lisa! The diamond one is Monica Vinader and was a Christmas gift from my husband, the bar one is Orelia at John Lewis – about a tenner, I have a triangle shape for layering too. They do lots of lovely designs x
Such a hottie… Ps Thank you for sharing Reformation. I’m off to drain my bank account now.
You were MADE for a reformation frock.
Hi Charl – saw Sarah a few weeks, she was wearing THAT cardigan, so I had to order it ! It arrived the other day & I love it – so thank you for the tip ! x
Hi Ashu! *waves* ha ha! I bought one for Sarah and one for Netty!
I think H&M should pay me commission 🙂 xx
Those reformation dresses are gorgeous! How do they size up though? I find American sizes confusing! I’m generally a size 8 in topshop and petite, but it can be quite tricky guessing what size I’ll be in some places!
Hi Fran! I am a UK 6 and wear a Reformation 2 (or XS). Having said that Topshop is the one tricky place of me, sometimes a 6 is fine, other times it is too small (and I buy an 8) and occasionally it has been too big and I have bought a 4…….I think we should write a feature on sizing! it is very confusing!
The good thing is reformation size wise seems quite consistent (all my size 2’s fit perfectly and I’ve not needed any alterations) – they also have quite a good sizing guide on line, good luck! xx
Sorry if you’ve already said and I completely missed it, but where is your slouchy cardi from?!
Hi Nicky! it is from H&M 🙂 I’ll see if I can find it and post a link x
Thank you… That would be super appreciated! x
Nicky so sorry, they have sold out 🙁 This is the same shape though but without the leather and only £9 in the sale:
http://www.hm.com/gb/product/47057?article=47057-C&cm_vc=SEARCH#article=47057-C
I know – too sad they’ve all gone (have you bought out the entire stock Charlotte?!) but I’ve chanced it on this similar one in jumper form Nicky http://www.hm.com/gb/product/25857?article=25857-N#article=25857-F but only XS left. Charlotte you really should be on commission!
Amanda and Nicky, just to let you know – they had a whole rack of the cardigans in the Knightsbridge H&M store, it might be worth popping into a shop near you in case they have some left x
Thank you Charlotte and Amanda! Might just have to get both! (And squeeze myself into an XS!!)
You look hot, Charlotte! And those boots are incredible! I would never have dreamed of pairing boots like these with that summer dress, but you look absolutely stunning!
Bless you, thanks Anja 🙂 I have to get my wear out of them! x
I need those boots and all the clothes on that reformation website in my life, do you know when they usually do sales?
Hi Emma, I sign up to their email newsletter doo dah (it’s actually quite witty and non annoying) which tells me about sales, discounts and whatnot x
