Those of you that follow me on instagram will know that I’ve been having a bit of a crisis of confidence of late, specifically in the summer style department.
I’ve always preferred winter and autumnal dressing to the warmer months, I just find it easier – and more comfortable. It’s a case of throwing on a cute tea dress with opaque tights or a black skinny jean with a slouchy cardigan. In summer I can’t seem to find a middle ground, I always feel that fashion is too skimpy and I end up veering towards looking as though I’m dressed for December, or for a fancy wedding. I can’t seem to do casual cool. It’s always a bit casual…”haven’t made an effort” at all.
I had some success with a couple of maxi dresses you will have seen in my Summer Staples feature a month or so ago – I swear I have LIVED in that flutter sleeve number (now only £38 in the sale!). And there lies the problem. Up until the last fortnight or so, I’ve lived in about four different items. It wasn’t so much ‘capsule” as really bloody boring.
Hilariously one of the first things I bought was another floral ASOS maxi dress that Lisa has already recommended in her “top five picks of the sales” feature on Sunday (we didn’t cross reference, we just have very similar tastes in clothes, our daughters basically have the same wardrobe). Long flowery gowns are clearly my “style” so I need to embrace it. Rather than worrying I’m potentially wearing similar pieces all the time.
With my colder season skinny-jeans-and-slouchy-knitwear favourite combination in mind, I decided to see how I could switch it up for when the sun puts his hat on. So I actually went shopping. And I mean in real life. Not just armed with my keyboard and a virtual basket.
I went for the whole day to London with my friend perfect Kelly (Pocahontas, skin the colour of caramel, one of the loveliest people on earth) and do you know what? we had a smashing experience. We took time to browse the rails and try things on at an unprecedented relaxed pace. There were several glasses of fizz throughout the trip (you know, to assist with decision making) and we both came home with quite a few bags full of beauteous bargains.
Have you checked out Oasis recently? I hadn’t. Not for years. I bought two of their long-line rib trim cardigans – one in “Coral” (more like a peachy apricot) and one in “pale grey” (a heather grey, rather than a true grey) and they are lush, a true fine knit which is ideal for rising temperatures whilst keeping you warm as the evenings draw in, and only £26 each. Oasis also have a wide range of bardot style tops which I’m loving at the moment.
I have been pairing my cardis with pretty camisoles from New Look, every time I’ve worn this white floral print button front design I’ve been asked where it’s from, and have been met with a raised eyebrow and an “oh really?” when I’ve revealed my source. I also have this lace trimmed mid-pink version and am tempted to purchase other colours. Camisoles from New Look are £15.99 each.
As well as a lack of regular daytime garments, I had also completely given up all hope of finding suitable stuff to wear to bed. Anything sexy simply isn’t appropriate for 5am wake up calls and warming bottles of milk in a cold kitchen. Yet wearing my usual nightshirts seemed well…..a bit frumpy and far too cosy for humid nights if I’m honest. I’ve recently discovered the brand Undiz via ASOS and their blush pyjama top and matching blush pyjama shorts are the comfiest items ever. They also come in black, which I’ve recently invested in too.
Motherhood brings with it many challenges, and although they are undoubtedly outweighed by joy, losing my sense of self still seems to be a daily battle. “What to wear” may seem frivolous in the grand scheme of things but feeling confident when I leave the house has a positive effect on my outlook which in turn has a positive effect on Mabel too. On a good day I feel as though I’m slowly but surely getting my style mojo back.
Alternatively on a bad day when I’m covered in my daughter’s petit filous, not had time to wash my hair and feel exhausted and beaten I just think “f*ck it”, and eat a bag of crisps whilst buying completely impractical yet lovely things like the lace dress in the slider above. The Outnet is a dangerous place to peruse but my goodness it’s addictive. Alexander Wang at 80% off anyone?
Have you discovered anything “casual yet cool” recently? Do you too prefer dressing for winter? And if anyone can recommend an excellent strapless bra then I will love you forever (I’ve tried the wonderbra ones that everyone raves about and unfortunately they just don’t seem to work for me.)
I feel exactly the same. I feel like I’ve completely lost my style since becoming a mother, and it’s rare I leave the house feeling happy and confident. I live in skinny jeans and a tee, which is fine, but everything seems to be a bit.. Tatty (that’s what the snot/food/dribble combo does for you). I’ve also lost buckets of weight (which I know many would see as a good thing but constantly been told I’m skinny doesn’t help with the confidence) and so my clothes hang off me, making me feel like a child. I think that im going to follow your example and book a baby free day of shopping and really treat myself!
Anna it is so worth it – we went on a Thursday and it was quite quiet. I got to the stage where I would simply have “Mabel” clothes and then keep a few “nice” things just for me – only to wear out and such. H&M is good for T-shirts that fit well but are also “throw away”. Do let me know what you end up purchasing! x
Even sans children, I’ve definitely lost my summer style mojo. I think one of the things that’s making it trickier is dressing for this flipping weather – you need all sorts of paraphernalia if you’re leaving the house for a full day as it’s warm sunshine one minute and heavy showers another.
It’s not helped by retailers decision to embrace fringing, midis and teeny shorts which all quite frankly look ridiculous on me. Not wanting to wish my life away but Autumn is so much easier to dress for!
Love all your outfits Mrs O’Shea x
Ha ha isn’t it Lauren! As soon as September arrives the tights come out! 🙂
There are a lot of VERY small clothes out at the moment, I literally sound like my mother “Oh my goodness! I wouldn’t let Mabel go out in THAT!” ?
I think it’s hard when you reach the age when things start to feel a bit too young for you. I’m 33 so in no way ancient but I don’t go in for trends at all anymore.
I love a skinny jean and camisole top so am definitely checking new look out this week before I go to Barcelona on Monday! And I can second Oasis. I went in there for the first time in years the other day and was really impressed. I even treated myself to a new navy tshirt. Very adventurous I know!
I have found summer dressing for the office the most challenging. I am not a fan of bare legs at work and the minute it gets warm I don’t know what to wear because all of my dresses and skirts are a little short to be worn workout the 40 denier tights. Does anyone else feel the tights are basically like wearing trousers so it’s ok to go shorter than you would normally? I digress. This summer I invested in some skinny trousers and a selection of loose blouse style tips from Asos and so far am finding summer in the office a little easier..
I feel EXACTLY the same Jennifer. It’s almost as if there is a gap for suitable clothes from late 20’s to late 30’s but lots for the very young. Hmm. Maybe we need to bring out our own fashion label.
With you on the tights thing – not to mention my naked legs are milk bottle white and often covered in eczema and Mabel-induced bruises. I prefer to keep them covered 🙂 xx
Jennifer you are describing my life!! Also going to check out the New Look camisoles… so pretty x
You have to go shopping for summer cloths in Barcelona, while you are there. On every corner there is a Mango or Zara. When I was there last April, I was “Zara-Hopping”. The prices are a little cheaper then here and I found 2 tops and a skirt and could have bought even more.
During the last House of Fraser Brand Event I bought some Oasis pieces: black skinny jeans, a floaty top with palm leaves and a black and white striped top. I love their flowery dresses at the moment and I hope they will also go into the sale 🙂 At the moment, I am a big Oasis fan 🙂
Mia loving the sound of the palm leaf print! xx
I have been struggling too! I’m normally in mini dresses/shorts with black opaques, but feel really uncomfortable without tights. And my collection of grey tees look a bit miserable in the summer. Loved your flutter maxi but on me it was 2 foot too long and the v neck went almost to my belly button! Really struggling with summer style at the mo.
However I recently found an amazing strapless bra. I hate strapless bras but this one is actually comfy and gives a great shape http://m.bouxavenue.com/boux-lace-strapless-plunge-bra-neutral-mix/107006-10nx thinking about getting it in black too!
Oh boo, so sorry it was so long Fran (I wear it with heeled boots as with flats is too long on me too). The floral one I’ve linked to today is much smaller in proportions and length, I’m 5′ 4″ and it just touches the floor.
Thanks for the bra recommendation! looks lovely, will definitely check it out xx
Hi Charlotte, like you post baby- ok so now she’s nearly two and a toddler, I can’t quite figure out my summer wardrobe or clothing in general. My old style of pretty dresses just isn’t practical for picking up, climbing and running around after a toddler! I’ve recently just discovered the triumph strapless bra called magic wire http://uk.triumph.com/magic-wire-bra-with-detachable-straps/body-make-up-magic-wire/10147915.html?cgid=1293000#!color%3D6106_Smooth_Skin%26size%3D075_A looks weird in pictures but I’ve to say in the shop tried it on and very comfy and gives good shape. Hope you find some more pieces you like across the summer.
Ooh thanks Serena! Will take a look. I’ve literally been searching for a decent strapless bra for over a year (!) I never thought to check out Triumph.
I think folks without kids think you exaggerate when you explain how much your clothes get ruined – I have literally worn trousers and jeans through on the knees and had to simply throw them away 🙁 x
I never enjoy shopping for summer clothes as everything often feels either way too skimpy or impractical for English weather. Having recently lost some weight and realising I haven’t had any new clothes for a very long time I did a similar thing. Weekday shopping trip with my bad for the purse sister in law, which was great and I managed to buy things that when I got he were actually different from my existing wardrobe. I am a big oasis fan, but did have the same conversation that we feel too old for some shops, yet too young for others!
I think Oasis must have new buyers/designers – the quality is much better than I remember. I’m thinking I might make the effort to “go” shopping every 3 months or so (childless obviously!), it definitely installed my confidence a bit x
I have recently moved house and have not a penny for clothes and hate all my wardrobe! Summer clothes this year are things I have worn for the last few years sadly with the occasional update from primark! ?
In terms of the strapless bra, my sister who is much better off in the department than me swears by the wonderbra with the hands but I am much better off in a Calvin Klein that I picked up in Bicester a few years back, it’s brilliant.
You always look lovely anyway, and style ruts happen to us all sometimes! ? xxx
Hi Beckie! I tried that hands one – it made my chest weirdly flat. And you’ve reminded me, I really should take a trip to Bicester! I haven’t been for ages, well over a year. There isn’t a Primark near me, I picked up some lovely summer bargains in there a few years ago xx
I feel your pain Charlotte. It’s so hard to achieve a summery look that is polished, edgy and not super skimpy. I don’t like any of my pre-baby clothes any more and most of them are too big now anyway. I should have done more about my wardrobe by now as Zoe is 18 months, but life has got in the way. I think I’ll have to take a leaf out of your book and do a baby free IRL shopping day!
I am small but with boobs, and the covering up issue is a struggle for me. A lot of things show far too much cleavage, even if they’re not meant to, because my small frame makes a lot of things a bit hangy and straps are often too long. This is not helped by the fact that carrying a small person around tends to drag at my clothes and expose more flesh than I would like.
Which brings me to bras. I actually dropped a cup size after having Zoe, and to be honest I would be happy to lose a couple more! I need a whole new bra wardrobe as I currently only have 2 that fit. Underwear shopping is by no means pleasurable when there are very few nice things, nowhere stocks your size and anything that fits is super spendy. Apparently you can’t have a cup size larger than DD if you have a rib cage under size 32… 🙁
Anyway, I did succeed in finding a great strapless bra for my wedding day (pre-baby and boob changes). It was this one: http://www.figleaves.com/uk/product/PA-005130/Panache-Porcelain-Elan-Moulded-Strapless-Bra/?size=&colour=Nude&c=ppc&src=gguk_feed&gclid=CP3Lo_ufys0CFcZAGwodnKIKgA&gclsrc=aw.ds, which probably doesn’t come in your size but might help any fellow boobalicious ladies who are looking for a strapless bra!
Oh Tracy I bet you look fab with your amazing cleavage! But I do know what you mean. I was a 32D before Mabel – now a 32C and I do find it easier to dress. Although the other way around – some of my pre-baby low cut tops now look a bit crap, if I’m honest. And the whole bra thing has been a nightmare.
My sister is a 30E, she shops at Freya but has also found a few nice bras in Victoria Secret. I’ll check out this strapless number by Panache! xx
Ha Charlotte, my cleavage probably wasn’t bad before baby, but now it is a good bit lower down than it used to be! I can hoik it up with a decent bra but swimwear options are now even more limited than they used to be. Miss Mandalay is my go-to for bikinis, but at £80ish a pop, I can’t exactly throw them out after every holiday.
I’m the same size as your sister and a Freya fan too, especially as they go down to a 28 band, which I sometimes have to wear. Will definitely check out Victoria’s Secret – don’t know why, but I always assumed they wouldn’t stock my size. At lunchtime today I’m off to find a nude tshirt bra so wish me luck! x
Hi Tracy – have you tried Panache Envy bra? It goes down to a 28 and in four colours including nude. I have the nude (and the ivory and pink) and they are SO comfy and wear and wash super well. http://www.bravissimo.com/products/lingerie/sensational-sets/envy-bra/hot-pink/pn116hpk/?brand=panache
Thanks Milly – loving that hot pink one! I always feel like I restrict myself even further with bras, as for everyday wear I try to get a smooth cup – I hate that sort of lumpy look under clothes that some lace bras give. What’s this style like for that? Can you see it underneath light tshirts etc? I’m heading to Bravissimo at lunchtime so hopefully they’ll have it in stock and I can try for myself. 🙂
I totally know what you mean – especially when the bra has ribbons etc on! But I don’t think this one creates a lumpy look at all, I wear them all the time (in fact just have these three on rotate) under all sorts of clothes and never creates a problem. Nude is best for under light coloured clothes. Hopefully it’ll be a winner!! x
This thread made me laugh – I feel exactly the same! All of these lace/detailed bras look really pretty on their own/in an instagram flat lay (!) but underneath clothes don’t half make your chest a funny lumpy shape sometimes!!! xx
There are so many that come under the ‘Just for the bedroom’ category!! x
Such a perfectly timed post, I had a meltdown yesterday at my complete lack of appropriate clothes for summer. This time last year I was pregnant and I am a different shape to what I was the year before that so my summer wardrobe is pretty useless/outdated and yet with a little one, browsing the shops is not what it used to be! Thanks for sharing your finds.
Emily Oasis also do some excellent long-line camisoles which look as good untucked as they do tucked it. Worth a look. xx
I so agree with all the posts here – seems like we’re all in a style rut this season. I’m a little opposite than the rest of you, in that I’m mid 40’s and the years are catching up with me a little – have put on weight recently and just feel like a total ugly frump. I miss being a size 8 (now 12), and have literally no clue where to start. Maybe time to clear a day and get me to some shops. Thanks for the post, though – always such lovely ideas here!
Denise you do not look like an ugly frump! Definitely worth just clearing a day and going shopping. There are some excellent sales on at the moment too. Are you on instagram? I follow @doesmybumlook40 – I’m not her age but she wears some LOVELY clothes. xx
Thanks so much for that, Charlotte! I’m not on Instagram, but on that blog recommendation, I might have to sign up!
Always find great inspiration from instagram, current faves include chloelovestoshop, teeclutter and mrsmeldrum. Terrible for the bank balance but all fans of primary/ hm/ boohoo etc so options for all budgets
Post having children I have completely lost my style mojo.
Even though I’ve been back to my prep regnant weight twice, and actually better toned than before babies, thanks to Crossfit, I have no idea what to wear.
Everything pretty feels too young or too revealing or not practical.
I bought two of the same dress from oasis as I love it, and have pretty much worn it all holiday!
I’ve booked a day off work an I’m going shopping. A full day to wander and try on all manner of things I would not usually try. I cannot wait!
Love the new look camisole, may need to copy that one!
I’m with you on the too revealing thing Lora. I just mentioned to Emily above that Oasis also have some lovely long-line camis, I have the coral which is such a flattering colour and easily dresses up a pair of jeans. xx
http://rstyle.me/~8xqWr
Yes Oasis is excellent at the minute Charlotte as is Warehouse!
I’m struggling a bit adjusting to working part time and looking after my 10month old and the flipping weather doesn’t help!
Tomorrow I am sorting my wardrobe out (basically emptying it all out and starting again!). I have so much stuff and no idea what fits/goes together or even suits me anymore.
I’ve just looked at the cardi from Oasis online and think it’s what I need to replace a French Connection one we ruined by machine washing and tumble drying (when I say we I mean my lovely well meaning husband!)
This is the cami:
http://rstyle.me/~8xqWr
I love the cardigans so much I’m tempted to buy back ups!!! xx
Vicky I need to do exactly the same. I have quite a few boxes still in the loft (I gave literally bags of clothes away to charity last year) that need sorting. I simply don’t/won’t wear 90% of the stuff again. I’m hoping moving house will give me the kick up the arse I need! xx
Completely with you and I’m still breastfeeding (DD is 10 weeks) and losing the baby weight so it’s doubly tricky as I can’t wear my usual summer dresses. Honestly I feel like chucking away my entire wardrobe as barely any of it fits !! I can’t remember the last time I went shopping in real life yet I peruse online everyday!! Yesterday 2 pairs of shorts went into my basket from h&m that will hopefully fit! Fingers crossed! There is definitely a gap in the market for mid priced late 20’s-30s wear. I buy quite a bit from monsoon but you have to pick carefully as it can be frumpy but the quality is good. Going to look in oasis! X
Same here Rachie! I’m online every day! Good luck in Oasis – let me know if you buy anything 🙂 xx
This post really resonates with me. I’ve just had my second daughter, hot on the heels of my first. So I have BFing to factor into my summer wardrobe as well – groan. This means dresses are (mostly) out, although I did purchase a bf-friendly long red maxi from Asos. But even though it’s cotton & casual, its still a bit much for Jo Jingles! I am living in vests & longline grey cardies (will defo be purchasing that Oasis coral one to inject a bit of colour – thanks, Charlotte). But what to wear on the bottom half? I’ve been living in my skinny blue jeans but I do love a coloured jean at this time of year – anyone got any recommendations? Or indeed any other ideas? Ta muchly, x
Nikki, you should check out the Tommy Hilfiger khaki trousers from Lisa’s post the other day. All Saints have some lovely jeans in their sale – not ‘coloured’ per se, but there’s khaki, light grey and a lovely dusty pink. Also, I was in Zara the other day and there are loads of coloured jeans in the sale there. Happy shopping! x
PS My theory on the summer style rut we all find ourselves in is that one tends to hold on to summer clothes for longer & therefore our summer wardrobes are rarely as current & on trend as our winter ones. I have summer pieces that date back YEARS but can’t bring myself to chuck them out because I’ve only worn most of them a handful of times – usually on holiday (just don’t get the weather for them in Scotland!).
You’ve hit the nail on the head I think Nikki! I’m not a big fan of colour but I’m almost always persuaded by the skinny jeans / chinos in GAP. Usually a great price too if you wait for a 30% off email or sale.
Thanks, Lynsey! I just purchased a lovely grey longline cardie from Gap. Will pop back in to check out their trews.
Absolutely right Nikki, I have a bunch of maxi dresses which I don’t feel comfortable in at all yet I can’t bring myself to bin them, some I only wore for a week whilst on holiday in Mallorca (!) such a bad investment. I’ve never tried chinos….I wonder I wonder if they suit short legs?!
I know I’ve talked about this before but after my little one was born I literally threw out all of my clothes (with the exception of about 15 pieces). I chucked all my underwear too. I was a completely different shape post baby so there was no point in hanging on to it.
Don’t get me wrong, it was a VERY drastic thing to do (possibly fuelled by raging hormones) but it has made my life soooo much easier. I almost have a kind of uniform for daily wear and most things are interchangeable so I have a fair few outfit options. Then I have a couple of showstopper pieces that I throw on for nights out etc.
It’s also wasnt as spendy as you might think. I simply bought a few pieces each month to minimise the impact on my bank account.
Having less stuff means I can actually SEE my clothes when I open the wardrobe so it stops all of the I-have-nothing-to-wear meltdowns.
For a while I was fooled into buying bright clothes just because it was Summer (I’m in Scotland so I use that term loosely ?). Thing is, I don’t actually like a lot of colour in my wardrobe and once I stopped buying random pieces of colourful attire I found my whole wardrobe was more cohesive. You can still dress appropriately for the season even if you stick to a neutral colour palette!
Lynsey I’m totally taking a leaf out of your fashion book and am going to attempt to do a drastic cull in the next few months. I’m going to take a few weeks off work and do all sorts of small yet important jobs, wish me luck! xx
The dress from the Outnet dress is sunning Charlotte. I haven’t even been on that site since I was pregnant and safely knew I couldn’t fit anything so wouldn’t be tempted. Must. Not. Even. Think. Of. Looking.
Maxi’s are a great summer staple aren’t they. I love this orchid one you’ve got. I think I’m drawn to them as they look dressy but really you’re covered up (white leg issue sorted) in fact you’re pretty much covered from all angles/toddler proof. I’ve been looking online for a nice one for a wedding but have filled about 7 baskets with numerous casual daytime maxis so I can tell its my safe go-to type.
Following for everyones bra recommendations. I don’t have a good strapless at all so end up having to layer all my interesting necklines to cover up standard bra straps. I’m rubbish at investing in the basics though. I’m like a magpie to the impractical frills!
“I’m like a magpie to the impractical frills!” ha ha me too Amanda. You look fab in all your insta pics…..maybe you should have a little sneaky peek at The Outnet this evening? with a glass of wine? and a bag of crisps? 😉
Oh this is so me. Without the small human to look after! I really want to overhaul my wardrobe, but I have no idea how to shop. I love Oasis and it’s always been a staple for me. I’ve got that cardigan too Charlotte, but it’s safely tucked away for my honeymoon wardrobe, I need it now!
Genuine question…How do you shop on ASOS? People always seem to have such nice stuff from there, so I always go on there thinking ‘right I’m going to do this, I’m going to sort my life out and get new clothes’ and then 25 minutes later I’m endlessly clicking through 200 pages and don’t know what I’m doing. Help!
x
Haha Sian, thats so funny. I’d love to know if there is a better way to shop on asos. Unless I know exactly what i’m looking for- then the filters are pretty good, I do end up in an asos black hole for hours on end just INCASE I MISS SOMETHING and have to get to the end like an addict!
Then I buy everything I’ve liked and send most of it back.
Hi Sian! I do tend to go on ASOS with the intention of looking for something in particular and use the appropriate filters. I really rate their own brand – I know my regular size fits really well and if anything is a little bit generous, which is never a bad thing.
However it’s got to the stage I am on there so often I just click on “New in” and have a good old browse at pretty much everything. It’s hit and miss like most online shopping but their T-shirts and maxi dresses are generally great xxx
I hate trying to put outfits together in summer. I’m find it hard to find good fitting bottoms so end up ruling out separates. I don’t have trouble finding summery dresses but I get bored of feeling like I’m wearing the same thing everyday. I would love to skip through summer in boho blouses and denim shorts but it’s hard work trawling the shops for the perfect fit – a girl definitely needs fizz breaks!
My legs are too white and rash-y for shorts without tights. I’m actually tempted by all this body make-up that’s around but not sure I could deal with the faff, and would be worried it would rub off on seats!!!
Fizz breaks are an absolute must whilst shopping! 😉 x
Charlotte, can I just say that anyone who looks that fab in that lovely lace dress, especially one who has had a baby, should not be worrying about their mojo!! Seriously though, I’m amazed any of us have any summer clothes mojo at all with the weather as it is. It’s hard to know what season you’re dressing for in the mornings! I have so many lovely summer clothes and shoes in my wardrobe that I just never seem to get a chance to wear at all – thank goodness for jeans, they seem to fit any climate, boring though they are.
Bless you – thanks Kate. I’m ok in things like a well-fitting lace dress but that’s the problem, there is hardly anywhere I could wear it!!! And you are right about the weather, I feel as though I need to invest in a light weight anorak?! Mabel has a lovely one from Zara but they only go up to age 5…….
The Jacket…oh dear god where is that jacket from? (first pic with your boyf) 🙂
Also, I’ve tried many many many strapless bras, my fave is from primark, fits well, low plunge and boosts you up!
Oh Catrin that sounds amazing! the jacket is Topshop but a zillion years ago, so sorry 🙁
The Autumn is good for sequin jackets in shops though – Mango often has some pretty ones so worth a butchers xx
Okay so this is fab! Firstly, girl you are a stone cold fox. I wish I could look that cute in a cami pyjama set!
I thought to myself ‘oh i’ll have a quick scan and see what everyones strapless bra recommendations are’… LOADS. So thank you Fran/Serena/Tracy/Milly et al – I’m going to have a little shop around.
My boobs are a bit too small and a bit sad looking, so I need lift and oomph without being lumpy… i’ve picked up a hot pink bardot top from Coast for my sister-in-law’s wedding and there’s no way I can go braless. not in a million years. This post has saved my life (and possibly my cleavage)
xx
also, does anyone else find that strapless bras slide down a bit so the underwire ends up making it look like you have really long, old lady boobs? (probs just me)
Ha hahahahahaha, I think the suggestions have saved my life too, I was considering going braless as the bras I’ve tried so far have been crap. I LOVE the bardot trend that’s in at the moment, shoulders are so sexy! xx
You could totally get away with going braless Charlotte! Every now and again I throw caution to the wind, but I guess it all comes down to what you’re wearing.
Back in my late teens we used to use gaffer tape! It was that long ago I doubt they’d managed to invent a decent strapless bra, so we’d get creative… I tell you what – it works better than any bra I’ve bought since. Although from what I remember, getting it off again was no fun at all x
I completely feel the same having lost some weight recently and my boobs have finally got back down 2 sizes to a more reasonable size of 34f I’m finally getting my mojo back and I’m actually quite excited about my wardrobe for my holiday in 2 weeks! I love my little 2 year old man to bits but if I feel good in what I am wearing then I feel much more confident in myself! Fitting in pre – baby clothes is helping too. I think u always look great x
Yay! so glad to hear others are getting their mojo back too 🙂 jealous of your holiday, I’m thinking we need to book another one ASAP! x
Oh Charlotte what have you done!!
I want at least 50% of the links you’ve posted… pay day just 2 days away…!
I got a similar cardi to the Oasis one from TK Maxx which has never been off the last month or so!
Strapless bras – try Debenhams.
I love summer but dressing for it is slightly trickier although I do just love maxi dresses. Dressing for work in summer is what I hate – not a fan of a 10 denier tan tight but feels unprofessional to not wear em! I did discover Sainsburys ones recently – cheap, good fit (I need to get LARGE for my long legs) and the right shade of “natural” tan.
Lynn…it’s what we’re here for #dirtyenabling 🙂
Good tip on the Sainsburys tights, we do our food shop online with them so will absolutely check them out. Usually I find “natural tan” not tan enough – or similar to the one’s I wore for dance contests in the late 1990’s i.e. ORANGE. Neither are a good look.
x
I am TOTALLY down with buying different versions of the same things and wearing the same kinds of stuff all the time. I’ve got multiple repeat items in my wardrobe and I’d be the first to say that I have a definite ‘style’. The joy of being thirty *cough* eight is that its soooo much easier to ignore all that tat that’s in the shops 🙂
Some places I’ve been recently that have some more (ahem) age appropriate stuff – M&S (actually killing it right now with basics like this top http://www.marksandspencer.com/v-neck-vest-top/p/p22443047?image=SD_01_T43_2007R_KH_X_EC_90&color=KHAKI&prevPage=plp&pdpredirect and this leather skirt which I am sooo tempted by http://www.marksandspencer.com/leather-belted-a-line-wrap-skirt/p/p22452780?image=SD_01_T59_8344_JR_X_EC_90&color=OLIVE&prevPage=plp)
Phase Eight (yeah, I had the same thought ‘Really??’), went in the other day, had a *ton* of nice stuff (and some frumpy things but hey!), I bought this awesome eighties style number http://www.phase-eight.com/fcp/product/phase-eight/dresses/beth-ombre-tunic-dress/203655408
Jigsaw and Whistles – both had some really nice classy but cool items and Karen Millen had some nice bits in the sale
Claire I just bought a Karen Millen maxi skirt I have been eyeing up – it’s now half price in the sale! Bargain! x
I nearly cried because the sales assistant said the shoes I tried were in the sale and then they actually weren’t :'(
I feel the same! I actually need help! I’ve got a 3 month old and am struggling for summer wear. I have an obscene amount of dresses but nothing is suitable for breastfeeding. I ended up wearing the same dress 3 times in 1 week on a trip to Venice (the apartment had a washing machine, thank god) as most of my nursing clothes are long sleeved. I was melting! We are away to Portugal next month and I’m finding it very hard to find light summery dresses that have breastfeeding access. I refused to buy a lot when I was pregnant as it was such a waste of money. I’m about 5kg away from my post baby weight so I also don’t want to buy too much or items that are too expensive. I am also struggling to find a breastfeeding friendly dress for a family wedding in August. Not that it should matter, but it’s a wedding full of models as well! I feel that most nursing outfits look like work or casual weekend wear. Breastfeeding mums want to look nice in the summer too!
Have you joined the group Can I Breastfeed in it?’ On Facebook, great for inspiration and sharing finds, lots of wedding outfits on there recently too.
Hi Gemma
I recently discovered https://www.motherslovefashion.com/
which has a small but lovely collection of dresses/jumpsuits designed specifically for breastfeeding. I just purchased the red polka dot tea dress for a wedding in August. It arrived today and I’m really pleased with the quality and fit.
Claire x
Totally with you all in the Summer Style rut and also with the gap in the market for clothes for the no longer in teens, not quite my mother age. I am 26 and have suddenly found that everything is either too teenage or too old 🙁 Add into in the mix being a petite 5ft nothing and you have seriously limited clothing options! Any tips on great petite ranges that I am missing?
Aimee at 26 I don’t think much is too young for you peach 🙂 But I do know what you mean – there are a lot of crop tops and teeny skirts around! I rate ASOS (I’m not on commission promise!) for their petite range xx
I’ve bought that maxi dress as recommend by Lisa too, although I’m pre-empting having to send it back for not fitting as I just can’t get a dress to fit me at the moment. Too tight on the hips and too big on the top 🙁
I much prefer winter and autumn dressing too. I love jeans and jumpers too much. I quite like wearing shorts and tshirts in summer or pretty camis but it’s really not been short weather. Today I am wearing leggings, a denim mini skirt, a NASA tshirt and a hoodie for crying out loud! x
PS I forgot to add, you are absolutely rocking those PJs – pfft not sexy, they definitely are when worn like that!
And Oasis is my favourite shop at the moment, so many lovely things, gorgeous florals and colours and I really rate their sizing 🙂 x
Ha ha thanks Kitty. They were supposed to be “pretty” rather than sexy (and so comfortable) but they are a hit with James. Obviously if he likes them that much he can buy me another set….
The dress is quite stretchy, I was pleasantly surprised by how it skims your bits and bobs rather than clinging to everything xx
Charlotte you’ve hit the nail on the head. It is so hard to find summery yet age appropriate and flattering clothes! A shopping trip with fizz is definitely in order.
Definitely going to check out all these recommendations for a strapless bra and have also added chloelovestoshop, teeclutter and mrsrmeldrum on insta for some fashion inspiration as per Lucy’s suggestion! X
Me too Lisa! I have a few days off next week so am going to check out all of these bras! x
As I read this I begin nodding my head. I feel I have lost my style mojo too…. Only I don’t have any kids, so for me at least, it can’t be that. The more I’ve thought about it, the more I think in my case, it’s down to two things:
1) age – not far off forty I feel paranoid about looking like mutton, but that perhaps I am also playing it a bit too safe and dressing beyond my years sometimes – I don’t want to prematurely age myself with what I wear thank you very much, my growing crows feet are doing a nice job of that already. I think that as an age group, we are totally under-represented in the shops, and that most of the outfits I like in the glossies are beyond my budget at £325 for a skirt and such like. Is wanting to be dressed comfortably, stylishly and age appropriately (and I haven’t even mentioned practicality yet!) whilst also maintaining a bank balance in the black so unreasonable?;
2) social media – I am the first to sing the virtues of the way technology and social media in particular has opened up so many new lines of sight for us all, but I do think that somewhere in all the outfit inspiration we are bombarded with these days, and the mind blowing amount of choice we now have, that it’s no wonder I struggle to remember what it is that *I* like and what *my* style identity is, rather than what’s fashionable or what I’m being told I should like. I’m not sure I know what I am naturally drawn to anymore. Perhaps a detox is in order so I can remember how to stay true to myself in the sartorial department. Then though, the struggle will be to not get stuck in a rut!
Nirvana is out there I know it, I suspect the answer though, as it so often is, is in something that we all struggle with in some form or another and that’s balance. Keeping an open mind, whilst also staying true to ones self. Sounds easy doesn’t it! If only!
Oh, almost forgot. I have a great strapless bra from Marie Jo which I bought at Rigby and Peller. Pricey, but worth it for a decent strapless (with straps you can use multiple ways if you like) that you’re not hoiking up all day, and it’s lovely and comfy too.
