Foundation: It’s a beauty essential but picking the right type and shade can be an overwhelming task. Do you go for a powder, cream or liquid? Should you choose oil free, water free, luminizing, hydrating, mineral based…the choices are endless. I’ve snooped inside the make up bags of the lovely Lolly, Lauren and Charlotte to see which foundations they use and what their recommendations for a flawless complexion are.
Lolly
{Skin Type} Normal but can be dry in Winter
{Foundation Need} Sheer natural-looking coverage that can be ‘built up’ if desired. Product must also be moisturising and help to correct colour inconsistencies particularly redness in some areas.
For Day: Nars Sheer Glow Foundation in Deauville (19 shades available)
I’d heard good things about Nars Sheer Glow foundation whilst I was on the hunt for a dewy glowy skin product. I’d fallen out of love with my Clinique CC cream which felt a little clumpy and gunky and wanted something that offered me coverage whilst smoothing out various red patches on my face but had a finer consistency than my previous makeup favourites. ’Sheer’ is the keyword here. By chance I happened to pass by a NARS counter on a recent trip to town and tried the foundation out for myself and was sold. ‘Deauville’ is the closest match to my skin tone and I wear it pretty much everyday and without any negative effects on my visage so far. In fact I’d go as far as saying that the condition of my skin is significantly improved since I’ve started wearing it and friends and family have commented on how natural it looks. The only negative I’d say the product possesses is that there’s no pump dispenser on the bottle so it’s a question of pouring out the right amount of foundation on the back of your hand which can be a little bit messy at times. But a little goes a long way and I’ll definitely be making a repeat purchase.
For Night: Emporio Armani Luminous Silk in No 4 (21 shades available)
I actually purchased this foundation based on the recommendations of you lovely lot over on our Instagram account recently and have been bowled over by the results. So HUGE thanks and kisses for suggesting I invest. I wanted something that offered that little bit more coverage for evenings and special events whilst still making me look natural at the same time. Like the name suggests the foundation glides on like silk and feels weightless once on; there’s none of that stretched skin feeling nor the worry that your face will crack like the sahara desert if you even attempt to smile. It is possible to build up the layers should you so wish but I find that just the single application is more than adequate for excellent coverage. The foundation eliminates all colour inconsistencies smoothing out fine lines and small bumps so I’m almost back to my eighteen year old self. Perhaps my favourite feature of the product is that my skin still feels moisturised…perhaps even more so…when I’m wearing it so there’s absolutely no chance of it flaking off whilst I’m out.
Lauren
{Skin type} Combination skin
{Foundation need} Full coverage to cover acne scarring and conceal blemishes. Prone to high shine.
I moved away from Estee Lauder’s Double Wear as I found the finish too heavy and difficult to blend and for the last 18 months have been using YSL’s Fusion Ink. Overall I was happy with the long lasting coverage of YSL and found the thin fluid far easier to apply than Double Wear but my eye was distracted by the NARS counter and I decided to give this a whirl instead.
Promising to be a highly pigmented, long wearing, perfectly balanced foundation I can honestly say NARS All Day Luminous Weightless Foundation definitely delivers on the longevity front as well as significantly reducing shine. However it zaps every bit of moisture in my face and clings to any dry patches (which let’s face it are quite common at the moment thanks to the central heating and arctic temperatures). I’ve found ditching my usual primer helps as the formula seemed to cling to it accentuating my pores rather than concealing them. I will persevere though as the Mont Blanc shade is perfect for my cool, pale skin and the pump applicator makes for easier dispensing. My next plan is to use a sponge rather than my finger to get a less patchy coverage and if all fails I’ll be moving over to Double Wear Light.
Charlotte
As many of you who read my beauty features will know, I’m a slave to ALL kinds of products – I have drawers (literally!) full of lipstick, eyeliner, blusher…..eyeshadow. I’ve tried nearly every mascara on the planet, and I’ve only recently, after years and years of searching, found the concealer of my dreams. But when it comes to foundation I’m a novice. Completely clueless. I don’t wear it and I don’t like it. At all.
Apart from the magical Guerlain Meteorites Baby Glow Light-Revealing Sheer Make-up which I use sparingly and for special occasions, I have a tried and tested method of buffing on pressed powder (I rate Chanel) and using the aforementioned concealer on areas of redness and under-eye circles.
This does not mean I don’t need foundation, or that I wouldn’t benefit from it. I see some of my friends with their enhanced velvety flawless finishes and am often very VERY jealous. It’s just everything I’ve tried either goes patchy on my dry bits, looks too heavy because my skin is so fine or causes some kind of weird reaction. Essentially every foundation makes me look worse not better. And what’s the point of that? When we initially discussed this feature I was the first one to put my hand up and say “I’m not sure I can contribute?!” because obviously, I’m not going to recommend a product that doesn’t 100% deliver.
But then I discovered the Australian brand Nude by Nature which you can purchase in the UK at ASOS. I’d read about it numerous times, and as it’s essentially a powder foundation, appealed to me much more than a goopy liquid or cream. Unlike the majority of other mineral powder based make-up brands, Nude by Nature doesn’t use Bismuth oxychloride (a by product of lead and copper metal refining combined with chloride – read more HERE) so it is allegedly less likely to cause an adverse reaction to sensitive types.
Much like my every-day buffing of pressed powder, their “radiant loose powder foundation” (in the image above) is applied in much the same way. The formulation also includes an SPF 15 and is “enriched with Jojoba and Kakadu Plum” – fancy. I found it was indeed very radiance boosting, it didn’t stick to dry patches and unlike my regular powder does on occasion, doesn’t settle into fine lines either. You can apparently build it up to “medium” coverage, I would say that’s pushing it a bit – light to medium is more like it BUT the uniformity and luminosity that it creates on your skin does give an undeniably soft focus/very even toned finish.
I wouldn’t recommend it for oily complexions, as the day wears on there is a very definite glow – but I personally quite like this effect, and a shiny T-zone is easily fixed with some blotting paper or a quick swipe of a more traditional powder compact. Colour wise I went for their shade “Ivory” pale yet with warm/yellow undertones.
This is the first ever “foundation” that I’ve used almost every day since purchasing, I’m so impressed I’m considering trying other products from the range too……
And now it’s over to you. Have you got any recommendations that the RMS team need to know about? Please do share!

I’m still loving Antipodes mineral foundation in pale pink. It’s buildable, gives good glow and generally makes my skin just look better.
I’m such a fan of Alpha H skincare that I’ve recently ordered their Multi Perfecting Skin Tint. It’s essentially a tinted moisturiser but has a colour-match concealer in the lid to deal with problem areas. Im yet to try it but I’ll be sure to report back!
I’m on the hunt for a new foundation at the mo – long lasting and a bit of glow are on my wish list. Double wear light does the job on the longevity but not 100% sold. Love the finish of the new YSL Touche Eclat foundation but it doesn’t quite last a 13 hour shift. The search continues.
Charlotte do tell more about the concealer of your dreams…..
Rachel do let me know which one you go for next. In the last year my skin has changed so much and I’m beginning to think I don’t need such a heavy foundation. Sounds like our wish lists are the same…
I’m sampled up with some Bobbi brown and Chanel and going to try Laura Marcier silk crepe after reading the recs on here
I use By Terry Cover Expert, which I like because it gives fairly good (mediumish) coverage without being heavy. Sometimes I think I’d like a bit more luminosity though, so now I’m tempted to check out the Nars Sheer Glow. This would be far from the first time that Lolly is responsible for the depletion of my bank account! 🙂
Having said that, I should probably just bite the bullet and buy the Meteorites pearls, cause I’ve meant to ever since Charlotte first posted about them. Nude by Nature looks like it could be worth a go too, though I really hate buying make up online – it just feels like a lottery. That’s the reason I don’t own any Charlotte Tilbury, which is another brand I NEED to check out. Actually, maybe it’s just as well I don’t like online cosmetics shopping…
Hi Tracey, I know what you mean with the cosmetics on line thing. I would say the ASOS chart is quite true to colour for Nude by Nature, and you can send stuff back to ASOS if it’s not as it appears on screen…I’ve sent make-up back before I’ve opened x
Ive been faithful to Estée Lauder Double Wear, with some redness and blemishes, this foundation has given me a lot of confidence. I have however, fallen out of love with it since suffering from post pregnancy skin, it just doesn’t quite give me the smooth coverage it used to.
I’m keen to try the NARS All Day Luminous Weightless Foundation, sounds like it has been working well for you Lauren.
Has anyone tried Charlotte Tilbury Magic foundation? Ive just bought the CT Air Brush Flawless powder as I heard it was a good companion to the Double Wear. I haven’t tried iy yet buy have high hopes
I’ve got the Magic foundation by Charlotte Tilbury – it’s lovely but quite heavy- i mix it with their ‘Wonder Glow’ for a bit of a sheen. I recently bought the ‘Light Wonder’ foundation and much prefer it- plus you can just keep adding layers to get the coverage you want.
If you order through their website they send you three samples so you can send the unopened product back if its the wrong shade. Genius.
Good luck not buying every product though- the packaging is amazing! X
I think I may need to investigate Nars sheer glow!! Seems like the perfect ‘casual’ face product for when I want to look nice but not too fancy!
Lauren I’ve used the Nars luminous one before and found I had to work on small areas at a time when putting it on and sort of pat/blend it!
And Charlotte what is the concealer of your dreams!!
I am constantly on the look out for the perfect foundation!
Hi Vicky
It’s the Estee Lauder BB double wear glow pen, I use it everywhere! it’s natural but really buildable. For nights of little sleep I use 3 layers (!) x
Oh I need this! Why now Felix is 6months old and sleeping quite well do I look like the walking dead! I have the worst skin I’ve had in about 10yrs!
Thanks Vicky, will try patting from now on!
I ‘Think’ I saw a Nars make up artist on the Internet doing it that way when it was first released! Something to do with the warmth of your fingers helping it blend….. Also the lovely Salu Hughes recommends that technique and then a quick buff with a brush as it sets so quick!
I’m totally with you Charlotte, I really dislike the feeling of foundation. However I recently discovered Laura Mercier tinted moisturiser which is amazing! Feels like moisturiser and looks like my skin only better. I still just stick with bare skin and double wear highlighter for day plus touche eclat blur for the shiny bits of my face (amazing stuff – found via RMS you dirty enablers you!).
I wouldn’t mind finding a foundation though and the Nars sheer glow sounds lovely. I tried bare minerals but made my skin itch so not sure powder foundations are for me!
PS welcome to RMS Lisa! ?
Thanks Fran!
*listening intently to all these recommendations*
Fran the itch from Bareminerals might be the ingredient I mention above, Nude by Nature doesn’t have it in x
I am also a BIG Laura Mercier fan! I actually live in Aus, so have tried Nude By Nature, and I find the LM mineral foundation (much) better. It’s really light and buildable, doesn’t feel like you’re wearing anything at all. I have combination skin/oily Tzone, and I do find my nose is quite shiny by lunchtime, but to be fair that happens with literally every single foundation I’ve ever bought. LM’s radiance primer is delightful everywhere else but I need something more heavy duty for the old szhnozz. The search continues…!
So I have combination/oily skin and need foundation that will cope with a 12 hour day, including three hours of commuting time (think windswept platforms and bus/tube…). It’s a lot for foundation to cope with.
Anyway, was looking for something to replace my Bobbi Brown foundation with last month as it was no longer lasting through the day. I now have two:
– Illmasque Skin Base foundation – quite a matt finish but lasts all day and has buildable coverage (and if you can find a counter they do great samples!)
– Chanel Les Beiges foundation – a more glowy matt, again lasts brilliantly on my skin.
I also use Illmasque Matt Veil primer underneath both.
I NEEDED THIS FEATURE!! As a non-foundation wearer I need to buy a foundation for my wedding in 5 weeks so I look like a better version of me! I have tried Estee Lauder Double Wear and it is quite good but not 100% convinced.
Lolly the Armani sounds incredible – good for a wedding do you think? x
Definitely Milly! Lots of makeup artists use Luminous Silk for weddings because it’s beautiful on – giving coverage without looking like you’re caked in slap. I found that popping in on a Monday morning (if you’re able to) to have a trial session with a makeup artist at one of their counters helped. I didn’t book and I was in and out in ten minutes but it’s been worth every penny!
Fab, thank you Lolly! I will try and a) find somewhere that stocks it and b) get a quick trial session! xx
Milky, both of Lolly’s foundations are recommended by Lisa Eldridge god wedding make up!

Blinkin auto correct sorry MILLY!!!
I have normal skin and hate the heavy gunky feeling of foundation so I stick to tinted moisturisers. When I bought my wedding make up I was introduced to Jane Iredale’s tinted moisturiser and it has worked really well for me. During the day I only need a pea sized amount (which I apply with my fingers) and for a night out it is great to build up. I find it has great staying power. I tend to do a very light dusting of powder to seal the moisturiser over my t-zone but leave the rest of my face for a dewy look with just the moisturiser.
I prefer using cream blushers – do you have any recommendations of products to try?
Claire if you want to splurge the Laura Mercier and Kevyn Aucoin (Space NK) are great, a good budget alternative is the Maybelline one in a pot….I’ve also heard the new Bourjois Aqua liquid blushes are excellent but haven’t tried one myself x
Thanks I will take a look (after pay day – your ‘enabling’ can be dangerous)
My current favourite is Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua. I’ve never used a foundation that has such a natural texture on the skin and it feels gorgeous going on. My skin is prone to redness and very mild acne and this covers what I need to. My skin easily tilts from slightly dry into slightly oily, so occasionally I need to check for shine or spray on something hydrating to keep it looking good. I don’t think it’s terribly long wearing, I tend to top up with concealer. I also use Eve Lom powder foundation which sounds like Charlotte’s in that it is really glow-giving and smoothing. I’ve never known powder could be like this! It’s great, and worth a try.
Kate I didn’t know Eve Lom did a powder foundation! I will have to investigate x
It’s really good! And the shades go very pale. It is about twice the price of the one you recommended though so you might be on to a winner there!
In the spirit of general enabling, I’ve just found out that escentual.com have 20% off all make up at the moment…buying myself some Givenchy Teint couture balm (a Sali Hughes recommendation). I seem to have some kind of base-addiction…
Melissa the Charlotte Tilbury magic foundation is lovely. It feels really nourishing and very easy to blend. It is a bit of a gamble to buy it online, unless you’re happy mixing shades to get the right colour, but I think I found a website somewhere that matched the colours to shades of other foundations and the one I ordered was spot on.
Having said that I’m also a Nars Sheer Glow fan and have just switched back this week to my Deauville (in the midst of building work and the house is upsidedown. I do my makeup in the kitchen and get dressed in the hallway so changing foundation for a few days is as close I get to pampering) Lolly did you know you can get pumps from Nars counters? They always seem to be out of stock online, but that seems to be because someone buys them all and sells them on ebay for £10 (grrrr) but at your friendly Nars counter they’re just £3 and well worth it when you cost up the foundation you can waste dripping down your arm on a slightly rushed morning 🙂
Only one I’ve tried and really didn’t get on with was the Bobbi Brown lasting foundation. I have really oily skin and this just turned into matt patches of foundation seperated by oil – Basically a really gross face. I didn’t keep that one.
Thanks Amanda! I never thought of researching matching foundations, I’ll look that up. Good luck with the building work!
Amanda you’re a lifesaver – I’m definitely investing in a pump! I feel a bit of a prat now having tried to function without one!
I’m also a Nars Sheer glow user – i got a sample passing by the counter in selfridges years ago and then bought some for my wedding. I do think it doesn’t provide a lot of cover, but it lasts ages and I use it everyday.
Lolly – you can buy a pump to use with it from the Nars counter – £3
I’m also looking out for some good concealer – particularly for dark circles. My Mum recently commented that if one of her staff had dark circles like mine, she would be calling them in for a meeting to check they were ok?!! She bought me some clinique pep start under eye cream, but i cant say i’ve noticed a difference.
Claire how did I not know this?? Thanks for the tip! I’ll be investing this weekend xx
I have the same problem and use Mac pro-longwear concealer to cover my dark circles 🙂
Claire, try the BB glow double wear pen b Estee Lauder seriously! it’s AMAZING! I have literally purple under eye circles when I have an allergic reaction (at least once every two weeks) and it covers that. I actually go a shade lighter than I should (they say not to do this but it works for me!) x
I am desperate to fall in love with a foundation again.
Since YSL culled their Perfect Touch foundation I’ve been flitting between brands and still not found the one. I migrated to the YSL Touche Éclat Foundation but wasn’t 100% convinced, so I think I’m going to pop to the counters and try the magical Guerlain Meteorites Baby Glow foundation next time and will also give the Guerlain Météorites Base a go too. xxx
The YSL has been reformulated and re-released, might be worth another go
Ohh has it, thanks Rachel. Looks like I’ll be back at their counter too xxx
I have very reactive sensitive skin, often dry and sometimes a little red in places. Couple this with the fact that my skin is also very pale and you have a foundation nightmare.
Like Charlotte, I have tended to stick to concealer where it’s needed and buff powder on instead. I’d heard good things about the new Chanel Les Beiges foundation, but was hesitant as a lot of their products are frangranced, which is usually a big no-no for my pretty delicate and temperamental skin.
I decided to investigate further and after talking to the girls on the counter, took home a few samples to try – I always ask for samples to try at home and have never been refused; I feel you never really know if a product works for you until you’ve tried applying it (and removing it) yourself a couple of times.
A week in, I have to say this foundation hasn’t produced a bad reaction from my skin. It smells like freshly washed hair (which I find a little odd) but it goes on evenly with a brush, doesn’t dry out my skin and gives a light to medium luminous finish that is enhanced further by a sweep of Guerlain’s Meteorites. You don’t need a lot to get good coverage and it lasts a good 6-8 hours depending on how much I touch my face during the day. Highly recommend!
Sarah I think we have exactly the same skin….I might ask for a sample of les beiges next time I’m at a Chanel counter then, I do find I don’t react to their products – ever actually. Which is odd, because as you say, they are quite fragranced a lot of the time x
I am loving the les beiges foundation!! I have super dry skin and normally really fail with foundations and powders alike so struggle a lot! I might give the nude powder a try to see if it avoids sitting on my dry patches! X
I got a sample of Les Beiges but it oxidised horribly on my skin. Pop into debenhams today and came away with samples of Bobbi brown serum foundation, Chanel Vitalumier Aqua and Estee Double Wear BB!!
Yes, I think we do Charlotte! I hope you get to try Les Beiges – the tones are much more pale skin friendly than some of their other foundations too. Always keen to swap success stories about super sensitive skin friendly cosmetics – and well, any cosmetics really… especially if they come in a black and white gift bag with interlocking C’s on the front… x
I’ve got Bobbi Brown Skin Foundation on the go for day to day wear, and Chanel’s Perfection Lumiere for a heavier coverage on an evening. The Chanel one gives a lovely flawless coverage, but I know those with more sensitive skin types might struggle with it.
My current hunt is for a new primer, I’ve got too many options I don’t know what to go for!
I’m also very tempted by the Balls!
I’ve literally done no work this morning, first Becky’s belter of a post on RMF and now the joy of foundation over here!
I’m a fan of YSL too, but where their foundation didn’t suit me, I completely swear by their Touche Eclat Blur Primer. It goes on like silk and has a gorgeous little glow of a sparkle. But anyway, Foundation-wise:
Daytime – I have been hawking round a giant bottle of Estee Lauder Individualist for YEARS (I know you shouldn’t keep it for that long, but my pal works for Estee so when I say the bottle is giant, it’s huge… and now it’s discontinued, so what can a girl do). Lighter than Doublewear but gives great natural coverage, i’m going to be lost when it finally runs out. Good to see some tips for possible replacements! ^^
Evening – I like a more luminous, studio finish for evening and found Diorskin Star is perfect. It’s light, without being too reflective and goes on beautifully.
Application-wise, It was actually Charlotte who turned me onto Real Techniques and I really like their foundation brush from the Core Collection. It’s a bit on the small side so I use it alongside their Miracle Complexion Sponge, which is just fab for blending.
Fab first post Lisa 🙂 xx
Hee hee thank you…however it was Lauren, Lolly and Charlotte that did all the hard work 😛 x
I’m not much of a foundation wearer but I use it sometimes when I look particularly pale and dead (and currently to cover the odd pregnancy spot..). I’ve always loved Bobby Browns Skin foundation SPF, in Porcelain. Doesn’t make me feel or look caked in, works well with my (very) pale skin and lasts all day 🙂
Another thumbs up for NARS sheer glow! Having shelled out to see a very spendy dermatologist last year regarding my acne, she recommended NARS products as they’re non-comedogenic. I find it’s great for everyday, as is their concealer.
This post could not have come at a better time for me! I’m about to throw a whole new spanner into the equation…sorry ladies! I have been using Estée Lauder Double Wear Light since my wedding nearly three years ago and still love it BUT I’ve recently found out the brand is testing on animals so I’m looking for an alternative now my current tube is coming to an end. I think I tried the Nars when I was wedding hunting and didn’t like it… Does anyone have similar alternatives to the Double Wear Light?
I mean to read this on Friday… do love a good make up post 🙂
I have combination skin – prone to the odd spot and redness in areas. I am what they call in Scotland “peely waly” but sometimes if a base is so light it doesn’t do me any favours – I need a warm tone to bring me to life!
I was using Clinique Even Better up until last summer which I really liked but I was starting to get dry bits on my cheeks. I won a John Lewis voucher from work and decided to head to the beauty counters and came away with Bobbi Brown Intensive Skin Serum Foundation. My other half said I looked like I was in HD (in a good way) and it felt really good on my skin however I felt like the shade me look even paler and my biggest bug bear was the packaging. It is a pump dispenser but you end up with loads of wasted product spilling down the sides. Not good at that price. And because of that it ran out much quicker than my Clinique ever would have.
Back to the beauty counters a few months ago and bought YSL Touche Eclat foundation which I really like although it feels a bit on the heavy side sometimes. I had a sample of Chanel La Beige Healthy Glow foundation recently which I loved.
Oh and also as I wanted something light for day I decided to try Bourjois Radiance foundation last week as I kept reading good things about it. It’s the first time I’ve bought a high street foundation in ages. So far so good but I think you can feel the difference with more pricey ones.
If anyone is interested in saving a bit of dosh, I have re-bought no.7 Stay Perfect Superlight foundation. I used to wear the heavier one and on my combination skin with acne and redness it was buildable. I then was lured onto the Mac counter and used one of theirs for the winter, but since the start of spring I wanted something lighter. I keep my Mac for the evening. Also their CC cream has light coverage but does tackle un-even skin tone quite well and looks dewy.
