I have lots of dresses. LOTS. I find them so easy to wear, my winter uniform is basically a floral frock, opaque tights and ankle boots. If you were to peek into my closet right now you will also find various pairs of tailored shorts and black skinny jeans. With these items I have a kind of mix “n” match “capsule” approach of sorts going on, a grey, white or black vest/T-shirt with some kind of slouchy fine knit cardigan over the top.
If I’m feeling really fancy I might even throw some delicate layering necklaces into the ensemble. I know, the diversity! Seriously though, it’s so much easier knowing what suits you and what you feel comfortable in and not having to rummage around your wardrobe early in the morning when all you want to do is crawl back under the duvet.
What you won’t find hanging on my rails is many skirts. Not counting long swishy summer maxis (currently gathering dust in the loft) I have three. And none which have been purchased in the last year. I find them difficult to say the least. Not only is style and length an issue (short legs, long body, just shy of 5′ 4″ – anything just below the knee or midi looks ruddy awful) but I only seem to be able to make them look dressy/overly “smart”. I have a spendy black AllSaints leather number my Mum treated me to a couple of Christmas’s ago (zippy, quilted, rather short) that I only ever wear to parties or on rare date nights, a neoprene grey A-line from Alexander Wang (was reduced from something ridiculous like £300 to fifty quid on The Outnet) and a flippy pleated patterned navy blue. The latter two I only ever wear to client meetings as thus far, I’ve felt as though I am unable to make them “casual” enough for everyday.
Recently however I think I’ve managed to make the transition (it’s taken me 30 odd years but you know, better late than never). And that’s by simply finding the right style and fit for my body type. The key for me was going higher waisted, it somehow alters my overall proportions and gives the illusion of longer pins. Also shorter in length but not necessarily mini or god forbid, tight and stretchy (I have boy hips with one on the wonk since I had Mabel so uber clingy is not flattering, I would also like to be able to walk). This vegan leather zip-to-it piece in burgundy from Free People is my latest favourite thing. I buy my usual size but it’s generous enough to tuck my regular T-shirts into without feeling as though I can’t breathe. Talking of regular T-shirts, the Ultimate Easy design by ASOS is the bomb. The perfect loose yet non tent-like cotton, I bought this two pack of black and white – only £18.
Having fallen in love with the burgundy pleather (there are loads of other lovely hues to choose from by the way), I went and treated myself to the denim version too. I wear this with my favourite Zara jumpers which unfortunately are no longer available but this round neck style is VERY similar, I’ve already bought the charcoal grey. Obviously.
As for the tassel ankle boots, I cannot lay claim to this fashion find, reader Lynsey did some rather sneaky enabling some months ago by mentioning them in the comments section of a specific footwear feature. They are the Tulsi boot by Free People and I have them in natural, saddle (light tan) and black. Obsessed.
Hmm, I’ve just noticed they now do them in a fetching rust shade…..tempting.
Do you “do” skirts? What’s your favourite style and why? And what do you wear with them? Ahem, sporting your toddler daughter’s gold glitter crown whilst wearing your new skirt is of course entirely optional.

I used to LOVE skirts, but being a Mum has kind of changed that. I only whip out the skirts if I know I’m going somewhere I won’t be expected to bend down, sit on the floor or pick up after my boy. Which in all honesty, is rare. I’m looking forward to the day I can wear thick opaques with my skirts to make that less of a problem.
Hi Naomi! Well I guess that’s why I’m ok at the potential bum baring thing – thick tights! Having said that I won’t wear them for a casual playdate – it’s trousers or trousers. As Mabel’s older I find I crawl along the floor less these days, but for home small person entertaining it’s my Sweaty Betty dance pants and a T-shirt.
I love skirts and thick black opaques but find it difficult at the moment because I have the opposite problem to you Charlotte – longer legs and short (stumpy) body so higher waisted looks silly. I suit a ‘hipster’ skirt far more but can’t find any! If any RMS readers have any recommendations I would LOVE to hear them – thank you 🙂 xxx
Aimee is there any way we can do a bit of an exchange? I have a bit of your legs in exchange for my excess torso?!
Zara do good hipster skirts, and ASOS have every style imaginable x
Love thick black tights. Love a-line skirts. Love those boots in rust!
I bought a leather a-line skirt from Warehouse last year. It literally goes with everything – boots, flats, heels, even converse / trainers.
I saw this yellow pleather skirt in Zara the other day:

Not a colour I would usually wear but i’m thinking with a striped t-shirt and black tights it could totally work.
Ooh oooh! I am really loving the light blue actually, nice shape too. You have to get it.
I am currently wearing the black version and am going to treat myself to either the blue or yellow too for spring/summer. It’s such a good style and reasonable on the old purse strings too. Winner x
Loving all the looks Charlotte….esp the gold glitter crown !
Can anybody please recommend a decent pair of opaque tights please, I usually go for 200 denier and am struggling a good quality pair
Ashu I have the same problem – I buy Falke, they are 100 denier but VERY opaque. I’ve had 200 denier before that seem a bit patchy. I’ve wasted so much money on tights that are just poor quality. Having said that Falke are spendy, they wash super well but still, I’d love to find a cheaper yet good for everyday wear alternative!
I always get mine from accesorize, really good quality and no show through. Not sure of the denure, I just get the highest ones. X
Ah! Love this! Charlotte – I am also of the long body, short legs, 5ft4(nearly!) tribe, and yes…skirts are not my friends! High-waisted, almost minis definitely the way forward… That Free People skirt is gorg! Might be finding its way into my pay day shopping basket next week!
Honestly Emily try it! Ahem, I’ve also seen they now do a corduroy version……. 🙂 x
One of my favourite things about winter is think, black, opaque tights so I can wear skirts and ankle boots. Casually I like skirts to be about 3 or 4 inches above my knee as I feels a ‘flirty’ length on me and mostly stick to an A-line. At work I usually wear pencil skirts that fall on the knee. I dread summer though as I hate being bare legged and find it difficult to get skirts that are the right length as I’m only 5’3”. It’s that awkward height wear petites are a bit short but regular tends to be a bit long.
I find that with petites too Claire, the proportions of petite ranges suit me much better than regular (i.e. length of jackets, sleeves, cut on shoulders etc) but I have the same dress length issue. I actually find Topshop can sometimes be ok for dresses in petites but it is a bit hit and miss. In summer fake tan on legs is my friend! Also last summer I discovered these 10 denier hold ups from John Lewis in a natural tan (?) type colour that didn’t really look/feel as though your were wearing anything x
I love a skirt but struggle with length being tall (5’11). Asos is my goto but even their skirt range is pretty limited. Any suggestions welcome…?
My other issue is finding opaque tights which are long enough. M&s extra large are perfect but the one near me almost never has them in. #tallgirlproblems
Primark, Sarah! (I feel like that might be a swear word here ?)
But seriously, I’m 6’2″ and their XL 200 denier are amazing. I’ve just branched out (much brave, so courageous ?) to the natural 20 denier and they’re ace too.
Thanks! No primark for me so I’ll have to wait until my next mainland shopping trip to stock up!
Your bravery is truly inspiring ?
I’m fond of a skirt but my recently post baby body is not letting me wear one yet! I want my waistline back! As for tights I personally think the best ones on the planet are M&S autograph 100denier velvet touch. They don’t snag/sag/ladder or anything and they wash really well. Plus they are super thick and opaque and go up to a size xl for those blessed with longer pins. I won’t buy tights unless they are sturdy enough to withstand a good yank up – none of those fancy lady tights for me!
Ooh Kerri thanks for the recommendation on the tights, are they matt?
Not sure if they’re matt finish, but not shiny like some. I think the velvet touch ones are as they are actually velvety looking.
Thanks Kerri! I’m due to order Mabel some new bits from M&S so a pair of the Autograph tights will be going in my basket as well! xx
Hi, I’m a long time reader but first time commenter!
Charlotte firstly may I congratulate you on having short legs but still being able to pull off the short shorts look. I have similar proportions with the long body and manage to look like I have two sausages hanging from my torso if I wear shorts – not quite the look I was going for. And don’t even get me started on over the knee boots…love them but they don’t love me! Damn you little legs…
Anyway, top tip on thick black opaque tights – Primark! I don’t buy much from there (I’m not a snob but I do like clothes to last more than three washes, plus the fit is usually just so bad!) but they have aced it with their tights. Both the 200 and the 100 denier are really thick and hold their shape, plus they’re about £7 for a pack of 2. I promise you’ll be pleasantly surprised! x
Lois I’ve heard v. good things about Primark tights – good to be reminded! xxx
Lois thanks for the tights tip! And I know every trick in the book for longer looking legs (I think!) an ankle boot with a dip at the front is a must – as is a pair of nude heels with a bare foot/leg for maximum elongation. Are the primary tights matt? I am funny about any sign of shine (!) x
Totally agree with your shoe/boot tips – nude dips all the way! (errr that sounds wrong…) But yes the Primark tights are indeed matt, I’m not a fan of shiny black tights either, they just add to the sausage effect xx
Ahhhh just seen the Primark love! Thank goodness! *sigh of relief*
Ahhhh Charlotte this is so badly timed with my last full pay before SMP kicks in!! I want all the pleather ones!! I too have long body, short legs, 5’4 syndrome but alas my legs are a tad on the chunky side… I am not fat by any neans, just years and years of horse riding has given me a good solid chunky leg! So whilst black skinnies are my staple (actually I wear only black skinnies and FYI Sainsbury’s Gok range skinny jeans are amaze!) I am so tempted to try these skirts. The shape looks just gorge on you and I would love a bit of a change from my skinnies staple. I am also a fan of m&s black tights too (lived in their maternity ones until at least 4 months post delivery!)
*off to justify skirt purchase to hubby*
Maddy my legs are decidedly less chunky since I stopped running a few years ago, even less again now I’ve stopped doing any kind of long duration cardio (I do short bursts of dance training and pilates type moves instead). Basically working out is the enemy of short naturally muscular legs, that’s my excuse for spending more time sat on my bum anyway 🙂
You need a dip at the front boot for maximum leg lengthening Maddy – to wear with your skirt! Sorry, I think I just tried to make you buy the skirt AND the boots…..x
Ha ha I’ve just been googling “ankle boots with a dip” (and tassels of course!!) as not sure I could justify both skirt and boot purchase! Love them though. You’re right abput the running though Charlotte – I remember a past personal trainer telling me AFTER a six week session that whilst the work out was getting me super fit, I’d struggle to get my calves into a knee length boot!! Pilates all the way 🙂

Everybodies wardrobe should include short skirts and opaque tights. In Spring, Autumn and Winter they come into their own. 300 denier tights can even be worn like leggings, especially the fleecy ones.
This is a really good look for you.
